As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies \u2014 one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\r\n\r\nAbout the exhibit:\r\n\r\nIn the section titled \u201cA New Canon,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be, the \u201ctop 10\u201d book touted to have \u201cended colonialism.\" With the empty space, we acknowledge the book\u2019s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the \u201c(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli\u2019s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer, Charles E. Graves, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations, Jeffry Pondaag, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu\u2019s maps, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\r\n\r\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program\u2019s comparative approach to Dutch Studies, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mr\u00e1zek\u2019s comparative work on the \u201cmodel camps\u201d of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). Composed by William Grant Still (1895-1978) with a libretto by his wife, Verna Arvey (1910-1987), \u201cHighway 1\u201d received its premiere in 1963 and was rarely staged until it was produced by the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2021. This one-act opera by the \u201cDean of African-American Composers\u201d features a sweeping score that brilliantly blends elements of Romanticism, blues, and musical theatre with a classical musical structure. \n\n\u201cRise for Freedom: The John P. Parker Story\u201d receives its academic premiere with this production, its second ever. Composer Adolphus Hailstork (b. 1941) and librettist David Gonzalez (b. 1956) adapted this dramatic rendering of the life of John P. Parker, an enslaved person who earned enough money to buy his freedom. He went on to establish a foundry in Ripley, Ohio, and held three known patents as an inventor, all while working as an Underground Railroad conductor to ferry hundreds of people escaping from slavery across the Ohio River from Northern Kentucky. \u201cRise for Freedom\u201d was commissioned in 2007 by the Cincinnati Opera.\n\nHailstork received his Ph.D. in Composition from Michigan State University and is a professor of composition at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Librettist Gonzalez is a professional storyteller, poet, playwright, and musician who has been a Fellow of the Joseph Campbell Foundation and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. He earned his doctorate in Music Therapy from New York University.\n\nTogether, these different operas highlight voices that are underrepresented in the operatic canon.
