SUMMARY:Film Screening:Dissonance: \"The Feeling of Being Watched\"
DESCRIPTION:Dissonance is proud to present free viewing of The Feeling of Being Watched from March 28 to April 7\, and on the afternoon of April 7 a discussion with film's director and Wallace House fellow Assia Boundaoui. Conversation will be facilitated by Wallace House Director Lynette Clemetson\, and will be joined by Roya Ensafi and Tanisha Afnan.\n\nAbout The Feeling of Being Watched \nIn the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where journalist and filmmaker Assia Boundaoui grew up\, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences\, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counter terrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11\, code named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access\, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community—including her own family—fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process\, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation\, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:26th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners
DESCRIPTION:The 26th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan\, showcases the work of incarcerated artists living in Michigan prisons. The work is by men and women from all 26 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 25 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Networks and Identity Drive Geographical Properties of the Diffusion of Linguistic Innovation
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK\nLink: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99929959678\nPasscode: csaaw\n\nAbstract: \nAdoption of cultural innovation (e.g.\, music\, beliefs\, language) is often geographically correlated\, with adopters largely residing within the boundaries of relatively few well-studied\, socially significant areas. These cultural regions are often hypothesized to be the result of either (i) identity performance driving the adoption of cultural innovation\, or (ii) homophily in the networks underlying diffusion. While social scientists often treat either network or identity as the core social structure in modeling language change\, we show that key geographic properties of diffusion actually depend on both factors\, as each one influences different mechanisms of diffusion. Specifically\, we find that the network principally drives spread between urban counties via weak-tie diffusion\, while identity plays a disproportionate role in transmission between rural counties via strong-tie diffusion. Our work suggests that models must integrate network and identity in order to understand and reproduce the adoption of innovation.\n\nLink to Paper: \nhttps://arxiv.org/abs/2202.04842 \n\nSpeaker Bio: \nAparna is a third-year Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan's School of Information\, advised by Daniel Romero and David Jurgens. SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Savannah\n\nTitle:\nInvestigating the Roles and Applications of Moral Dimensions in Impression Formation\n\nAbstract:\nCurrent research on morality supports the idea that the moral landscape is comprised of several domains. However\, the extent to which these domains may be thought of as equivalent when used as the basis for forming impressions or making social judgments is not yet understood. Past literature suggests that there may be notable differences in the evolutionary and social development of different moral behaviors\, which raises questions about how actions based in different domains may be interpreted and judged by others. The current research explores possible differences in social judgment as a function of morality domain to inform the contemporary morality literature. This may set the stage for future studies to investigate the relationship between moral domains and social selection across contexts. \n\nTong\n\nTitle:\nIs Seeking Social Support Stressful\, Beneficial\, or Both? The Moderating Role of Culture.\n\nAbstract:\nBy seeking support from others\, one may potentially impose troubles on them. Though seeking support could be stressful\, as long as the support was sought\, it could be received and thus beneficial. We hypothesized that this dynamic is more pronounced in interdependent cultures (e.g.\, Japan) than in independent cultures (e.g.\, the U.S.). To examine this possibility\, we used matched surveys conducted in Japan (N = 301) and the U.S. (N = 931)\, with a focus on self-reported support seeking (assessed with the compensatory primary control) and biological health risk (BHR\, assessed with measures of inflammation and cardiovascular malfunctioning). BHR may reflect a downstream effect of social support received. For an exploratory purpose\, we also included self-reported perceived stress as a subjective and more up-stream correlate of support seeking. Among European Americans\, support seeking was associated with greater BHR. In contrast\, among Japanese\, support seeking was associated with lower BHR. Curiously\, support seeking was associated with lower perceived stress among European Americans\, but not among Japanese. Our findings suggest that culture may modulate the meaning of support seeking. In interdependent (vs. independent) cultural contexts\, support seeking may contribute to long-term biological health benefits even though it is relatively more stressful.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:**POSTPONED** Brazil at a Crossroads: Environmental and Food Politics Under the Bolsonaro Regime. From Ecocatastrophe to zero deforestation and back again: A natural experiment in environmental governance
DESCRIPTION:*** This event is postponed due to COVID. More details posted on the website when we know them. ***\n\nThe Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, the School for Environment and Sustainability\, and the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative present:\n\nBrazil at a Crossroads: Environmental and Food Politics Under the Bolsonaro Regime\n\nWhen Jair Bolsonaro\, a right-wing populist\, was elected as Brazil's president in 2018\, people began wondering about the consequences of that election for the environment\, food systems\, and trade\, among many other social and ecological issues. In this lecture series\, Hannah Wittman\, Gustavo Oliveira\, and Susanna Hecht will explore the impacts of the Bolsonaro regime on food security and agroecology\, on the conservation of the Amazon forest\, and on international trade with China\, as well as bright spots of resistance and innovation towards sustainability.\n\nDr. Susanna Hecht | From Ecocatastrophe to zero deforestation and back again: A natural experiment in environmental governance\n\nFrom 2004 to 2012 Brazilian deforestation dropped by 80%. This involved several institutional\, political\, and market dynamics that structured “socioambientalism” as part of the development practice for Amazonia. While widely lauded\, several other “adverse forces” were at work\, and in any case\, the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) was falling under the tractors of massive soy and sugar expansion. With the rise of Micheal Temer\, and the election of Jair Bolsonaro\, the configuration and politics changed dramatically. The central question now is whether processes that support forests and forest livelihoods can be reactivated? For a number of reasons\, probably not.

DESCRIPTION:The Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Program in the Department of American Culture presents\n\nNOBUKO MIYAMOTO\n- dance and theater artist - \n- Asian American Movement activist -\n- songwriter and author of\nNot Yo' Butterfly: \nMy Long Song of Relocation\, Race\, Love\, and Revolution \n\nin conversation with\nProf. Emily P. Lawsin\nASIANPAM/AMCULT 353/HISTORY 454: Asians in American Film and Television course\nin commemoration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month \n\nREGISTER for Zoom Link: tinyurl.com/NobukoWebinar\n\n \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nNot Yo' Butterfly \nMy Long Song of Relocation\, Race\, Love\, and Revolution \n\nBy NOBUKO MIYAMOTO\n(University of California Press\, 2021)\n\nwww.ucpress.edu/9780520380653\n\nA mold-breaking memoir of Asian American identity\, political activism\, community\, and purpose. \nNot Yo’ Butterfly is the intimate and unflinching life story of Nobuko Miyamoto—artist\, activist\, and mother. Beginning with the harrowing early years of her life as a Japanese American child navigating a fearful west coast during World War II\, Miyamoto leads readers into the landscapes that defined the experiences of twentieth-century America and also foregrounds the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories\, identities\, and power through activism and art. \nMiyamoto vividly describes her early life in the racialized atmosphere of Hollywood musicals and then her turn toward activism as an Asian American troubadour with the release of A Grain of Sand—considered to be the first Asian American folk album. Her narrative intersects with the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Grace Lee Boggs\, influential in both Asian and Black liberation movements. She tells how her experience of motherhood with an Afro-Asian son\, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities\, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 Rodney King riots—and how she used art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation. \nThrough it all\, Miyamoto has embraced her identity as an Asian American woman to create an antiracist body of work and a blueprint for empathy and praxis through community art. Her sometimes barbed\, often provocative\, and always steadfast story is now told. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nNobuko Miyamoto is a third-generation Japanese American songwriter\, dance and theater artist\, and activist\, and is the Artistic Director of Great Leap. Her work has explored ways to reclaim and decolonize our minds\, bodies\, histories\, and communities\, using the arts to create social change and solidarity across cultural borders. Two of Nobuko’s albums are part of the Smithsonian Folkways catalog: A Grain of Sand\, with Chris Iijima and Charlie Chin\, produced by Paredon Records in 1973\, and 120\,000 Stories\, released by Smithsonian Folkways in 2021. \n\nABOUT THE ALBUM:\n120\,000 Stories\nNobuko Miyamoto\nSmithsonian Folkways Recordings\, 2021.\nhttps://folkways.si.edu/nobuko-miyamoto/120000-stories?mc_cid=e752c698a4&mc_eid=4d22403658\n\nNobuko Miyamoto is an icon of Asian American music and activism. Since the early 1970s\, she has been exploring ways to reclaim and respirit our minds\, bodies\, histories\, and communities\, using the arts to create social change and forge solidarity. 120\,000 Stories collects powerful new songs\, reinterpretations of old ones\, and recordings from across her career\, including from the seminal 1973 album A Grain of Sand and the band Warriors of the Rainbow. These songs speak to past and present struggles—for self-determination\, Black Lives\, the environment. They chronicle difficult histories\, they celebrate resilient traditions\, and most of all\, they endeavor to connect communities.\nwww.nobukomiyamoto.org

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2022 Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series is among the most prestigious international platforms for the presentation of new work on Roman history and culture. The Jerome Lectures are presented at both the American Academy in Rome and the University of Michigan. In 2021\, the forty-eighth year of the lecture series\, Lynn Meskell (2015 Resident)\, Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Historic Preservation in the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania\, will discuss the ethics of global heritage and archaeology.\n\nThis series\, entitled The Ethics of Heritage and Archaeology in Global Perspective\, addresses the role of archaeology and heritage within international networks of social and political change from the legacies of colonialism\, to Cold War tensions\, to the era of neoliberalism. The lectures reveal how the discovery and salvage of sites worldwide has mobilized government\, military\, and corporate interests\, in what Meskell describes as a form of archaeological adventurism. Employing case studies from the Middle East\, India\, and Europe\, Meskell attempts to uncover the dense network of social\, political\, and economic agendas that are at play in preserving the past.\n\nThis series includes four lectures given on different dates. All events will be held at 4:00 p.m. in Palmer Commons\, Forum Hall.\n\nMonday\, March 28 - Engineering Internationalism: Colonialism\, the Cold War and UNESCO’s Victory in Nubia\n\nWednesday\, March 30 - Imperialism\, Internationalism and Archaeology in the Un/Making of the Middle East\n\nFriday\, April 1 - Saving the World? SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar presents Rehan Akbani\, PhD (Associate Professor\, University of Texas\, MD Anderson Cancer Center)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe TP53 tumor suppressor gene is frequently mutated in human cancers. We illustrate the “omics” landscape of the TP53 pathway across five data platforms in 10\,225 patient samples from 33 cancers reported by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). More than 91% of TP53-mutant cancers exhibit second allele loss by mutation\, chromosomal deletion\, or copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity. TP53 mutations are associated with enhanced chromosomal instability\, including increased amplification of oncogenes and deep deletion of tumor suppressor genes. Tumors with TP53 mutations differ from their non-mutated counterparts in RNA\, miRNA\, and protein expression patterns\, with mutant TP53 tumors displaying enhanced expression of cell cycle progression genes and proteins. A mutant TP53 RNA expression signature shows significant correlation with reduced survival in 11 cancer types. Pathway activity scores were computed for all the samples using mRNA expression levels of ten TP53 pathway member genes. Gynecologic cancers show high activity of the pathway. The pathway is correlated with immune infiltration and EMT\, and anti-correlated with RTK and RAS/MAPK pathways. In particular\, a strong correlation with immune infiltration is observed in breast cancer. ATAC-seq data also show high chromatin accessibility of the pathway genes in breast cancer. Thus\, the TP53 pathway has profound effects on tumor cell genomic structure\, expression\, and clinical outlook depending on tumor type.\n\nShort Bio\nDr. Rehan Akbani is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston\, Texas\, in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He has worked at MD Anderson since 2009. He has played many leadership roles in major enterprises\, including as PI on TCGA’s MD Anderson Genome Data Analysis Center (GDAC) grant. Within the TCGA consortium\, he led four of TCGA’s analysis working groups and he’s been a co-author on each one of TCGA’s 33 marker papers and 27 pan-cancer papers since 2009. His primary contributions have been leading the analysis of proteomics data\, and batch effects and quality control of omics data. He won the AACR “Team Science Award” in 2020 for his work in TCGA. He was conferred the “Highly Cited Researchers 2019” award by Web of Science for co-authoring the most highly cited papers in the past decade. He has over 87\,700 citations and an h-index of 78 on Google Scholar. In 2014\, he won the “Test of Time” award from the European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) for publishing the most highly cited paper in ECML a decade ago. Currently\, Dr. Akbani is the Co-Director of MD Anderson’s proteomics core and Co-Director of the metabolomics core\, where he’s led the development of software pipelines for normalizing raw data and generating customer reports semi-automatically. He’s also contributed proteomics data analysis for projects including the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and the MD Anderson Cell Line Project (MCLP).\n\nHost: Veera Baladandayuthapani\, Ph.D.\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Women In Tech: Closing the Gap
DESCRIPTION:Women in Tech: Closing the Gap \n\nWednesday March 30\, 4:00-5:30pm via Zoom.\n\nWomen are obtaining degrees in STEM but struggle joining and staying in the tech industry. Women make up 20% of engineering graduates\, yet only 11% of practicing engineers are women. Nearly 40% of women who earn engineering degrees quit or never enter the profession. The primary reasons women are underrepresented in technology are lack of mentors\; lack of female role models in the field\; gender bias in the workplace\; unequal growth opportunities compared to men\; and unequal pay for the same positions. In 2018\, 53% of women quit their STEM jobs because of these scenarios. Despite the obvious obstacles that women in technology face\, their contributions have been exemplary. Join our panel of innovative Women in Technology as they discuss the importance of closing the gender gap in STEM\; and the importance of increasing the female population in the field
