SUMMARY:Film Screening:Dissonance: \"The Feeling of Being Watched\"
DESCRIPTION:Dissonance is proud to present free viewing of The Feeling of Being Watched from March 28 to April 7\, and on the afternoon of April 7 a discussion with film's director and Wallace House fellow Assia Boundaoui. Conversation will be facilitated by Wallace House Director Lynette Clemetson\, and will be joined by Roya Ensafi and Tanisha Afnan.\n\nAbout The Feeling of Being Watched \nIn the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where journalist and filmmaker Assia Boundaoui grew up\, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences\, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counter terrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11\, code named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access\, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community—including her own family—fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process\, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation\, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The History and Influence of Motown Music
DESCRIPTION:More than half a century ago\, the Motown sound had its roots in Detroit\, the “Motor City.” How did Motown music start and why? What defines Motown music? What are the major characteristics of Motown? What is its relationship to soul music? Professor Clague will discuss the rich history of Motown music and the impact it had on other music genres. Join Professor Clague for a trip down memory lane to hear What’s Going On?\n\nMark Clague is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs\; Director\, U-M Gershwin Initiative\; Co-Editor-In-Chief\, MUSA\; Associate Professor of Musicology and Entrepreneurship and Leadership at the University of Michigan. He researches music-making in the United States\, with recent projects focusing on the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the music of George and Ira Gershwin. His interests center on questions of how music forges and shapes social relationships in such subjects as American orchestras as institutions\, critical editing\, the art of sound as simultaneously a transcendent emotional expression and an everyday tool for living.\n\nThis is the fifth lecture of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Music in Detroit and Michigan: The Legend Continues. The next lecture in the series will take place April 7\, 2022. The title is Jazz in Post-WWII Detroit: The Performers and their Contributions. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Building Your Toolbox as an Anti-Racist Advocate in Higher Ed
DESCRIPTION:Higher Ed is a particular kind of work and learning space. While it shares characteristics with its primary and secondary counterparts\, it is decidedly different in its teaching\, student\, and administrative contexts. As a result\, anti-racist work in higher education settings must look different than it might in K-12 contexts and in other types of professional work settings (corporate\, non-profit\, etc.).\nLearning Objectives:\n\nCritically think and examine the nuances of racial in/justice and in/equity in higher education\nExamine how these nuances impact the frameworks and tools that are used as racial justice proponents\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact Rack-prof-dev@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/3k5XV.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Designing a Lab-Intensive Short Course for Underserved Populations
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: http://www.cew.umich.edu/events/designing-a-lab-intensive-short-course-for-underserved-populations\n\nPresented by: Eli Olson\, Hannah Schrader\, and Sarah Steiner representing Developing Future Biologists (DFB)\, CEW+ 2021 Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity & Social Change Award Winner\n\nIn the past two years\, DFB has received almost 100 applications/year for their short course. Due to logistical and financial constraints\, they are limited to only taking 25-35 students/year. The demand for more courses like this is high\, and as emphasized in their lightning talk (https://youtu.be/ipOEjJOT4aw)\, they believe having more specialty courses like this is a great way to engage students from underserved populations. This workshop will go over the logistics of financing\, developing\, and conducting a course like DFB\, with a particular focus on providing hands-on experience in a virtual environment. At the end of this workshop\, participants will have a better understanding of the needs of underserved populations\, and the necessary tools to begin to design a lab-intensive short course that caters to those needs. \n\nAdditionally\, an integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy\, social change\, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of well-being\, focus\, and interconnectedness. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.\n\nDeveloping Future Biologists (DFB) is an educational outreach organization led by graduate students and postdocs at the University of Michigan. Its mission is to ensure that the next generation of biologists\, regardless of race\, gender\, or socioeconomic status\, can learn the core concepts of developmental biology and are made aware of the vast opportunities that exist to pursue a career in the sciences.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Religion and Critical Theory: Muhammad Iqbal and Walter Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:In what ways can modern religious traditions come into constructive dialogue with critical theory? This Frankel Center lecture in collaboration with the Jewish-Muslim Research Network will seek to explore that question by looking at the concepts of time\, history\, and human agency in the thought of two 20th century thinkers\, one Muslim and one Jewish: Muhammad Iqbal and Walter Benjamin. Instead of focusing on questions of \"compatibility\,\" it will instead look to the generative ways in which creative (re)-interpretations of Muslim and Jewish themes and motifs can offer more capacious avenues for engaging religious traditions with critical theory in the pursuit of a better world.\n\nAdvanced registration is required: https://myumi.ch/Ek8AM\n\nAsad Dandia is a student\, teacher\, and organizer with an abiding interest in religious thought\, critical theory\, and radical politics. He is currently Community Program Coordinator at the Council on American-Islamic Relations\, New York (CAIR-NY)\, an urban studies student at CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU)\, and teaches at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research (BISR). He draws from his experience both as an academic and a community organizer to connect theory with praxis on a range of subjects. He graduated Columbia University with an MA in Islamic Studies with a thesis entitled\, “Rethinking Islamic Studies: Muhammad Iqbal’s Philosophy as Decolonial Critique.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Lifelong Collaborative Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nIt has long been a dream to improve human existence by integrating artificially intelligent robots into our society. We are now discovering that we not only desire\, but need\, such robots to help with current industrial and societal shortcomings\, most recently highlighted by the pandemic. For the vision of intelligent robots to materialize\, robots must autonomously operate over long periods of time. When robots team up with people\, e.g.\, in disaster relief and manufacturing\, most critical is the ability for them to adaptively work with other robots and engage in natural collaboration with humans. In this talk\, I will present my fundamental research on lifelong collaborative autonomy that enables the above capabilities for intelligent robots. First\, I will describe my work to address lifelong autonomy through representation learning and self-reflective adaptation for robots to build long-term environment representations and adjust their behaviors according to changes in not only the environment but also themselves. Next\, I will describe my research on peer-to-peer teaming with a focus on collaborative perception and adaptive teaming to enable robots and humans to work together side by side with an interaction style that robots implicitly infer team behaviors and adaptively offer proactive assistance. Finally\, I will broadly describe some of the most critical research gaps in creating intelligent robots before concluding with my long-term vision and plans to reimagine intelligence hierarchy for lifelong collaborative robots.\n\nBIO:\nDr. Hao Zhang is currently a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and the Robotics Graduate Program at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines). He joined Mines as an Assistant Professor in 2014 after receiving his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science\, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2020. As director of the Human-Centered Robotics Lab\, Dr. Zhang leads and conducts research on lifelong collaborative autonomy and robot intelligence. His research interests broadly lie in artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, and extended reality for robotics. Dr. Zhang is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award and a DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) that recognize his contributions on human-inspired and human-integrated robot adaptation. His research program is sponsored by funding from diversified sources\, such as NSF\, DARPA\, ARL\, ARO\, ONR\, DOE\, DOT\, USAFA\, and industry sponsors. Dr. Zhang regularly publishes at top robotics conferences and journals\, such as RSS\, ICRA\, CoRL\, IJRR\, and RA-L\, and has received multiple best paper nominations and awards.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Liberal Education Advances Democratic Engagement: New Findings from College and Beyond II
DESCRIPTION:Proponents of liberal education argue that it provides essential preparation for students to become skilled in the arts of democracy. Evaluating the case that liberal education prepares graduates for democratic engagement requires evidence-based findings that reveal how liberal education produces these salutary effects. In this session\, researchers will share new findings from the College and Beyond II research study at the University of Michigan that illuminate liberal education’s links to long-term political engagement. Michael Barr\, Dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, and Anne Curzan\, Dean of the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\, will discuss the implications of these findings and the ways that undergraduate education prepares students for participatory democracy.\n\nZoom – Registration Required:\nhttps://myumi.ch/EkrwM\n\nSpeakers:\n\nMichael Barr\, Joan and Sanford Weill Dean of Public Policy\; Frank Murphy Collegiate Professor of Public Policy\; Roy F. and Jean Humphrey Proffitt Professor of Law\; University of Michigan\n\nJennifer Brady\, Senior Research Specialist\, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)\, University of Michigan\n\nPaul Courant (moderator)\, Edward M. Gramlich Distinguished University Professor Emeritus and Provost Emeritus\, University of Michigan\n\nAnne Curzan\, Dean\, College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Geneva Smitherman Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature\, Linguistics\, and Education\; Arthur F. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:2022 Wallenberg Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Convened by U-M Public Design Corps\, \"Size Up\" is a full-day experimental symposium dedicated to exploring the multiplicity of activities and inquiries conceived to yield positive change across the design disciplines. Once set against the backdrop of social transition\, political reckoning\, and ecological crisis\, social practice progressively gained momentum among practitioners seeking a less client-dependent\, capital-intensive approach to work and production. More recently\, however\, a growing self-awareness around the contradictions of institutionally sanctioned\, solutionist rhetoric and the challenge of arriving at a common good has driven the category into a state of reflection\, if not crisis. This symposium brings together leading researchers\, practitioners\, and scholars to engage in dialogue around ways to meaningfully intervene. Assembling current and emergent strains of thinking in social practice\, participants will address and disentangle conundrums around communality\, universalism\, pluralism\, liberal democracy\, and social justice. Through a comparative lens\, the symposium will critically explore social design’s capacities to deliver transformative outcomes at a decisive scale. \n\nEqual parts scholarly gathering and action-based happening\, \"Size Up\" will directly examine the tools and processes to sponsor more flexible\, horizontal and engaging modes of collective participation through a series of concordant workshops. \"Size Up\" will feature Detroit artist/activist-led workshops\, live music\, and a moderated panel discussion between Taubman faculty and leading experts in Public Interest Design from around the globe. \n\nThis symposium continues the tradition of honoring the humanitarian work of Raoul Wallenberg\, a Taubman College alumnus distinguished for his courageous actions in German-occupied Hungary during World War II. \n\nSpeakers / Instigators\n\nThe Collectif Etc. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:899 Seminar Series: Karmel S. Shehadeh\, Lehigh University
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we present two distributionally robust optimization (DRO) models for a mobile facility (MF) fleet sizing\, routing\, and scheduling problem (MFRSP) with time-dependent and random demand\, as well as methodologies for solving these models. Specifically\, given a set of MFs\, a planning horizon\, and a service region\, our models aim to find the number of MFs to use (i.e.\, fleet size) within the planning horizon and a route and time schedule for each MF in the fleet. The objective is to minimize the fixed cost of establishing the MF fleet plus a risk measure (expectation or mean conditional value-at-risk) of the random operational costs over all demand distributions defined by an ambiguity set. In the first model\, we use an ambiguity set based on the demand’s mean\, support\, and mean absolute deviation. In the second model\, we use an ambiguity set that incorporates all distributions within a 1-Wasserstein distance from a reference (empirical) distribution. To solve these DRO models\, we propose a decomposition-based algorithm. In addition\, we derive valid lower bound inequalities that efficiently strengthen the master problem in the decomposition algorithm\, thus improving convergence. We also derive two families of symmetry-breaking constraints that improve the solvability of the proposed models. Finally\, we present extensive computational experiments comparing the operational and computational performance of the proposed models and a stochastic programming model\, demonstrating where significant performance improvements could be gained and derive insights into the MFRSP.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Karmel S. Shehadeh is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Systems and Engineering (ISE) at Lehigh University. She currently serves as one of the directors of the Operations Research Division at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Astronomy Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:Multiwavelength Characterization of Exoplanets and their Host Stars\n\n\nTransmission spectroscopy of transiting exoplanets provides our best opportunity to identify the makeup of planetary atmospheres in the coming decade. However\, stellar surface brightness inhomogeneities due to features such as star spots\, can impact these measurements and contaminate the observed spectra. I will present the Pandora SmallSat mission that is designed to disentangle star and planet signals in transmission spectra to reliably determine exoplanet atmosphere compositions. Pandora’s long-duration\, multiwavelength (visible and NIR) observations will provide constraints on star spot coverage and the impact of these active regions on exoplanetary transmission spectra. Selected for NASA’s inaugural Astrophysics Pioneers program\, Pandora will observe a wide range of star types (mid-K to late-M) and planet sizes (Earth- to Jupiter-size). Pandora’s legacy will be a data archive of long-duration\, simultaneous multiwavelength observations and a catalog of benchmark planets that will aid in target selection for James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and future exoplanet missions. I will also highlight some of my team’s ongoing research at NASA Goddard focused on detecting and characterizing exoplanets and their host stars using panchromatic data obtained concurrently with ground and space-based observatories.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dental care providers and patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds: Dental education and research observations from 1994 to 2022
DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry conducted a first cultural climate study. Writing a report about the results of focus groups with dental students\, staff and faculty members from LGBTQ+ backgrounds was the motivation to engage in ongoing educational and research efforts since then. Yearly surveys with first year dental students between 1997 and 2022 showed that a lack of interest in learning about treating patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds persisted over this time span and that an interest in learning about gender and women’s issues actually decreased over these 25 years. National surveys with dental students and dental and dental hygiene administrators showed a lack of education about treating patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds in these programs\, while analyses of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey provided empirical evidence concerning increased risk factors for poor oral health and lack of health care utilization of members of the adult LGBTQ+ community. National surveys with general dentists and pediatric dentists completed the picture concerning attitudes and professional behavior related to pediatric and adult patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds and pediatric patients on puberty blockers. Lessons learned from these research observations across a quarter century will be discussed.\n\nAbout Dr. Marita R. Inglehart:\n\nInglehart is a professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine\, an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology\, and a University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan. She received her education at the University of Mannheim in Germany where she was a faculty member until 1984 when she came to Ann Arbor as a visiting professor.\n\nDr. Inglehart studies the role of diversity and social justice in dental education and in oral health care settings. Her research has focused on how to educate future and current dental care providers to become culturally literate\, and on documenting how poor oral health of patients from underserved backgrounds affects their quality of life. Currently\, Dr. Inglehart's research focuses on how being a person who self identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community affects their oral health\, having risk factors related to poorer oral health\, and oral health care experiences.\n\nShe has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications\, five books and numerous book chapters.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Strategies for finding genes in time-dependent human phenotypes: The genetics of delta-t
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nEach person's physiology (phenotype) changes over their lives. While there are common patterns in these changes as we age\, there are also significant differences between individuals. Differences in phenotype are dependent on the interaction of the individual's environment and their unique genetic makeup (genotype). What are the genes -- and variants in these genes -- in the human population that impact the variation we see in time-dependent phenotypes? The talk will address the challenges of studying the complexity of human age- and time-dependent (longitudinal) phenotypes. TIme-dependent experimental strategies will require new types of reproducible\, non-invasive\, quantitative phenotype measurement tools. And\, to have a general impact\, human measurement technologies should be broadly accessible\, particularly to under-served populations. A low-cost\, quantitative system for measuring neurological status will be presented as an initial prototype for non-invasive longitudinal phenotype assessment.\nBio:\nDr. Burke is a Professor in the Department of Human Genetics\, University of Michigan Medical School. His research centers on developing experimental strategies and technologies for exploring complex\, multi-gene genetics in humans. Dr. Burke is interested in understanding the interaction of genetic variation and the environment with chronic\, late-life diseases. Before joining the University of Michigan in 1991\, he was a post-doctoral fellow in molecular genetics at Princeton University where he studied the laboratory mouse as a model genetic system. Dr. Burke obtained his PhD in the Department of Genetics at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he was working on the initial stages of the Human Genome Project. During his time at Michigan\, he has worked collaboratively with research groups in the UM College of Engineering\, primarily in the area of microfluidics.\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96508834308\n\nOrganized by:\nDr. Brendon Baker\,\nAssistant Professor\, Biomedical Engineering\n\nDr. David Nordsletten\,\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Cardiac Surgery

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:**POSTPONED** Brazil at a Crossroads: Environmental and Food Politics Under the Bolsonaro Regime. From Ecocatastrophe to zero deforestation and back again: A natural experiment in environmental governance
DESCRIPTION:*** This event is postponed due to COVID. More details posted on the website when we know them. ***\n\nThe Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, the School for Environment and Sustainability\, and the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative present:\n\nBrazil at a Crossroads: Environmental and Food Politics Under the Bolsonaro Regime\n\nWhen Jair Bolsonaro\, a right-wing populist\, was elected as Brazil's president in 2018\, people began wondering about the consequences of that election for the environment\, food systems\, and trade\, among many other social and ecological issues. In this lecture series\, Hannah Wittman\, Gustavo Oliveira\, and Susanna Hecht will explore the impacts of the Bolsonaro regime on food security and agroecology\, on the conservation of the Amazon forest\, and on international trade with China\, as well as bright spots of resistance and innovation towards sustainability.\n\nDr. Susanna Hecht | From Ecocatastrophe to zero deforestation and back again: A natural experiment in environmental governance\n\nFrom 2004 to 2012 Brazilian deforestation dropped by 80%. This involved several institutional\, political\, and market dynamics that structured “socioambientalism” as part of the development practice for Amazonia. While widely lauded\, several other “adverse forces” were at work\, and in any case\, the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) was falling under the tractors of massive soy and sugar expansion. With the rise of Micheal Temer\, and the election of Jair Bolsonaro\, the configuration and politics changed dramatically. The central question now is whether processes that support forests and forest livelihoods can be reactivated? For a number of reasons\, probably not.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Our Errors are Invisible to Us
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will be in person at Angell Hall G168. Please fill out the RSVP form as we have limited capacity for in-person meetings.\n\nOur Errors are Invisible to Us\nEvery judgment we make requires a second one--whether to be confident or hesitant about it. I discuss psychological research on the vagaries of reaching accurate confidence assessments of our judgments\, in particular the intrinsic problem of anticipating when we are wrong. Our errors are often invisible to us because they don't look like errors at the time. Other people\, however\, have a better chance at spotting those errors than we do.\n--\nDavid Dunning is Professor at the University of Michigan and a social psychologist focusing primarily on the psychology underlying human misbelief. His most cited work shows that people hold flattering opinions of their character and competence that cannot be justified from objective evidence\, work supported by the National Institute of Mental Health\, the National Science Foundation\, and the Templeton Foundation. An author of over 150 journal articles\, book chapters\, and general interest pieces\, he is half of the team responsible for describing the infamous Dunning-Kruger effect\, in which ignorance fails to recognize itself. He has served as president of both the Society of Experimental Social Psychology and the Society for the Science of Motivation. In 2016 he was awarded the Distinguished Lifetime Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity\, and has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences. He holds a BA from Michigan State University and a PhD from Stanford University\, both in psychology.\n \n\nCSC Speaker Event: Dr. Dave Dunning\nDate: Thursday (3/31) 6pm (ET)\nLocation: Angell Hall G168\nRSVP form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScsPqVJMYeLXuqxLQDvUWcqOxYzsOMOuCaixV046Dpin4MdjQ/viewform

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2022 Ferrando Lecture: Self-Interest and the Post-Individual
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 7:30pm on March 31st in the Palmer Commons Forum Hall for the 2022 Ferrando Lecture given by Yancey Strickler: \n\"Self-Interest and the Post-Individual\"\n\nSelf-interest and the post-individual\n\nOur definition of “self” has changed considerably in the past two decades. We are no longer defined as merely physical or even spiritual beings — we contain multitudes of selves — physical\, tribal\, digital\, virtual\, spiritual — that coexist inside us. This is producing a new human experience: the post-individual. The post-individual is a state of being in which liberated individuals carry multiple\, overlapping\, group-based identities that are extensions of their self\, that define who they are\, that are more theoretical in nature\, and that fill the space previous generations reserved for relationships with others. The post-individual isn't the end of the individual\, it's a new hero's journey brought on by technology and the threat of global catastrophe. Join the writer and entrepreneur Yancey Strickler\, founder of Kickstarter\, Bentoism\, The Creative Independent\, and Metalabel\, and the author of \"This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World\" as he explores the sweeping changes around and inside all of us.\n\nJoin from a PC\, Mac\, iPad\, iPhone or Android device:\n Please click this URL to join. https://umich.zoom.us/s/95481060279\n Passcode: 100268\n Description: for Philosophy Department\n\nOr One tap mobile:\n +13017158592\,\,95481060279# US (Washington DC)\n +13126266799\,\,95481060279# US (Chicago)\n\nOr join by phone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 900 6833\n Canada: +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 or +1 778 907 2071 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099\n Webinar ID: 954 8106 0279\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/adFoGGgvmK\n\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323:\n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Webinar ID: 954 8106 0279\n Passcode: 100268\n\n SIP: 95481060279@zoomcrc.com\n Passcode: 100268

SUMMARY:Performance:It steals into the night with the wind to nourish everything
DESCRIPTION:This concert includes the interdisciplinary thesis performance projects of Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidates Duoduo Wang and J'Sun Howard. \n\nDuoduo Wang’s work\, entitled \"A thread in blood\"\, investigates different orientation strategies of the Chinese diasporic identity and culture in the United States. The work carries lifelong memories and experiences of an old lady who immigrated 40 years ago to Manhattan's Chinatown. The cast of Asian American dancers contribute memories of their own cultural-identical strategies in different chapters of life (Birth\, Family\, Love\, Living\, and Death) and also explore the unique boundaries between performance and public spaces. Within a public performance\, Wang aims to create an open\, protected space in which everyone can express their identity\, ethnicity\, acculturation strategies\, and body statements through physical expression.\n\nJ’Sun Howard’s \"A Particular Embraced Affinity of Veering\" is an exploration in understanding how to embody Black Fugitivity\, which is radical ways in which Black people subvert time\, race\, gender\, and family history to refuse and flee what society puts on us to navigate systematic racism and injustice. By using movement strategies such as the hold/embrace\, circularity\, and the fragment\, \"A Particular Embraced Affinity of Veering\" captures the quiet urgency and complexity of deciding to refuse and flee.\n\nThis thesis concert is being held in partial fulfillment of the Department of Dance Master of Fine Arts degree requirements. The research for this event is funded in part by the University of Michigan Department of Dance\, and the Center for World Performance Studies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Sarah Harmer w/sg Charlotte Cornfield
DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nAre You Gone? – the first new album in a decade from Sarah Harmer – is a deeply personal and momentous collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life\, the urgency of climate crisis\, and the question of loss. The first song “New Low” is more than a return to music for the internationally celebrated singer-songwriter and activist: it is a definition of form\, a call-for-uprising in the face of global disaster\, at the most critical moment for Harmer to raise her voice – one of the most distinctive in Canadian music. The vitality of \"New Low\,\" its heedless pace\, sharp guitars and exclamatory horns\, bely the passage of time since Harmer’s last record\, Oh Little Fire (2010). Nearly twenty years from the release of her debut\, You Were Here (2000)\, Are You Gone brings a close to Harmer's period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement\, rich in detail and emotion\, from the heart and for the spirit. The multi-award-winning platinum-selling musician's long-anticipated sixth album will be released February 2020 on Arts & Crafts.

SUMMARY:Other:Call for Papers | Slavery and Its Aftermath
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Social Solutions is pleased to announce the launch of our 2022 paper competition focusing on issues within our Slavery and Its Aftermath research initiative. \n\nAlthough slavery is largely categorized by era—classical\, chattel\, and modern—the lasting and pervasive effects are still very much felt\; from the systemic oppression within our political and social constructions to the active transport and exploitation of vulnerable human beings around the world\, the economic\, legal\, and social institution of slavery in the American colonies laid the groundwork for many of today’s societal inequities\, both in the United States and abroad.\n\nIn thinking about this connection between past and present\, we encourage students to respond to one of two prompts exploring the topics of reparations and modern slavery\, respectively.\n\nLearn more: https://lsa.umich.edu/social-solutions/news-events/news/inside-the-center/project-announcements/2022-paper-competition--slavery-and-its-aftermath.html
