SUMMARY:Film Screening:Dissonance: \"The Feeling of Being Watched\"
DESCRIPTION:Dissonance is proud to present free viewing of The Feeling of Being Watched from March 28 to April 7\, and on the afternoon of April 7 a discussion with film's director and Wallace House fellow Assia Boundaoui. Conversation will be facilitated by Wallace House Director Lynette Clemetson\, and will be joined by Roya Ensafi and Tanisha Afnan.\n\nAbout The Feeling of Being Watched \nIn the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where journalist and filmmaker Assia Boundaoui grew up\, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences\, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counter terrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11\, code named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access\, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community—including her own family—fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process\, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation\, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Amygdala neuronal mechanisms of 'wanting what hurts'
DESCRIPTION:Incentive motivation that is dissociated from actual outcome value can lead to maladaptive attractions\, such as in the case of a rat that pursues a painful shock-delivering object. We have previously shown that optogenetic channelrhodopsin (ChR2) stimulation of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA)\, when paired with the presence of a painful shockrod\, causes laboratory rats to repeatedly self-inflict shocks. However\, the CeA is a heterogeneous structure and the contributions of its individual neuronal subpopulations in creating shockrod attraction is not known. Here\, in laboratory rats\, CeA neurons expressing D1\, adenosine 2a (A2a)\, or corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) receptors were optogenetically stimulated via ChR2 in the presence of a shockrod. In another group\, CeA neurons were targeted non-selectively with the hSyn promoter. Over multiple test days\, hSyn and D1 ChR2-stimulated rats displayed intense attraction for the shockrod\, repeatedly self-inflicting shocks and even overcoming an occluding barrier to do so. In a separate experiment\, we tested whether CeA ChR2 activation is capable of controlling preference for a laser-paired over a non-laser-paired reward in a choice test scenario. Here\, CeA ChR2 activation paired with remifentanil was preferred over sucrose alone\, and sucrose paired with CeA ChR2 activation was preferred over remifentanil alone. Together\, these results reveal that CeA ChR2 activation can make particular rewards ‘wanted’ over available alternative rewards\, and can even make harmful stimuli attractive and desirable. Our findings may have important implications for understanding the brain mechanisms of disorders in which individuals maladaptively pursue particular stimuli\, such as in addictions\, obsessive compulsion\, and self-harm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MAP Talk: Manon Garcia (Yale)
DESCRIPTION:MAP is excited to host Manon Garcia (Yale) for a Zoom talk next Tuesday (4/5) 12:30-2:30p. \n\nTitle: Submission\n\nAbstract: \"When analyzing unequal power relations\, philosophers tend to use mostly the concepts of “domination” and “oppression”. The concept of “submission” is rarely if ever used and when it is\, it is traditionally ben understood as autonomy abdication and therefore has been seen by moral and political philosophy as morally impermissible. Contrary to that view\, this paper argues that submission is not simply autonomy abdication and that the concept of submission is a useful and illuminating addition to the conceptual vocabulary of power analysis. The conceptual analysis of submission proceeds in the following way: after I advocate for a broad\, non-moralized understanding of the concept of submission\; second\, I develop a conceptual inquiry leading to a definition of the concept of submission\, notably showing that submission is not the correlative of domination\; and finally I demonstrate that the concept of submission enhances our understanding of power\, and\, in particular\, opens a path to a deeper understanding of the social structure of patriarchy.”\n\nManon is an assistant professor of philosophy at Yale University. Her primary research is in political philosophy\, feminist philosophy\, moral philosophy\, and philosophy of economics. Her two books are We Are Not Born Submissive: How Patriarchy Shapes Women's Lives and La Conversation des sexes: Philosophie du consentement (The Conversation of the Sexes: Philosophy of Consent). She also works on questions in 20th Century French philosophy\, critical theory\, philosophy of social sciences\, and phenomenology.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/s/96450539977

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Active Nematics in Three Dimensions
DESCRIPTION:Active nematics\, or self-driven liquid crystals\, are useful frameworks to model living matter. Two dimensional instances of these systems have been studied extensively over the past decade\, owing to their captivating life-like animation and rich phenomenology. Findings from these works suggest that motion in two dimensional active nematics result from hydrodynamic instabilities that generate motile topologically charged point disclinations\, and that the behavior of the resultant flows and defects can be controlled straightforwardly through confinement. \n\nIn this talk\, I will demonstrate that three dimensional active nematics are strikingly different from their two dimensional counterparts. The possibility of twist deformations in 3D alters the topology of the fundamental excitations : while the fundamental excitations in 2D active nematics are point disclinations with winding number +/- 1/2\, their counterparts in three dimensions are topologically neutral disclination loops. Further\, the emergent flows in a confined 3D active nematic couple the effects of confinement in different dimensions\, giving rise to a curious geometric criterion for self-pumping flows.\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Nam Center Colloquium Series | Film Roundtable: The Margins of Korean Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/DEpdn\n\nResponsiBLUE verification is required to attend the lecture in person: https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in\n\nModerator: Ungsan Kim\, Assistant Professor\, University of Michigan.\n\nWhat does it mean to speculate on the margins or periphery of Korean cinema when global respect for Korean cinema has never been higher? Margins are determined and demarcated by the distance from the center. Hence\, an account of margins is commonly given relative to the center. But what if we position the margin as a point of critical inquiry with which we problematize either the distance from or proximity to the center? In this roundtable\, three scholars of Korean cinema reflect on the pervasive optimism about popular mainstream cinema and discuss the potential and significance of “margins” of Korean cinema. Ranging from marginalized modes of production\, including women’s cinema\, cinema of the ethnic others\, and queer cinema\, to disciplinarily overlooked subjects\, including independent filmmaking and linguistic dimension of cinema\, the roundtable discussants will share their reflections on the marginal voices and practices in Korean cinema.\n\nKelly Jeong is associate professor of Korean studies and comparative literature at the University of California\, Riverside. Her research interests include modern and contemporary Korean literature\, culture\, and cinema. She published a book entitled “Modernity Arrives Again: Crisis of Gender\, Masculinity\, Nationhood in Modern Korean Literature and Cinema\,” with the Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. She has also published articles in The Journal of Korean Studies\, Hanguk Munhak Yongu (Study of Korean Literature)\, and ACTA Koreana. Professor Jeong’s courses include modern Korean literature\, Korean Culture and Society\, Introduction to Korean Film\, and Themes in Modern and Contemporary Korean Culture.\n\nJinsoo An is associate professor at the Dept. of East Asian Languages and Cultures of the University of California\, Berkeley. An completed a doctoral degree at critical studies program of Dept. of Film and TV of UCLA and subsequently taught at Hongik University in Korea before joining the faculty at UC Berkeley in 2012. His 2018 book\, \"Parameters of Disavowal\" reassess South Korea's cinematic rendition of the colonial past as a particular type of knowledge production integral to the historic-cultural logic of the Cold War system. His current project focuses on the South Korea cinema of the 1970s.\n\nUngsan Kim is assistant professor of Asian cinema in the Dept. of Asian Languages and Cultures and the Dept. of Film\, Television\, and Media at the University of Michigan. His current monograph project historicizes the emergence of critical queer cinema across Asia in the 1990s. His most recent publications include \"The Poet and the Theater: Perverse Reading and Queer Poetry\" in Routledge Companion to Korean Literature (2022) and \"Stateless Things (2011): Queer Cinema and the Critique of the Heteronormative Nation-State\" in Rediscovering Korean Cinema (2019).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Food Literacy for All
DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: In the early to mid-20th century\, metabolism cages emerged as key experimental infrastructures in animal studies used to capture\, control\, and isolate the metabolic processes unfolding within a subject’s body. By placing new world animals (rodents\, primates\, humans) in the cage\, precisely controlling their food and water intake\, and monitoring and analyzing their biowaste\, researchers can calculate the metabolic rate and develop a whole set of powerful knowledges about how bodies and environments interact. Drawing on key insights from critical race STS and animal studies\, this lecture explores the racial history of metabolism cages as carceral and experimental technologies that became part of a broader scheme to establish metabolic dominance over multispecies life.\n\nFood Literacy for All History: Launched in 2017\, Food Literacy for All is a community-academic partnership course based at the University of Michigan. Structured as an evening lecture series\, Food Literacy for All features different guest speakers each week to address challenges and opportunities of diverse food systems. \n\nThe course is free and open to the public. The 2022 course is virtual on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm EST.\n\nFood Literacy 2022 Registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0TGY1FaMRMSW2VzuP2pPDQ

DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nWritten and recorded over the past year\, Penny and Sparrow’s remarkable new album\, Olly Olly\, is a work of liberation and revelation\, a full-throated embrace of the self from a band that’s committed to leaving no stone unturned in their tireless quest for actualization. The songs here are fearless and introspective\, embracing growth and change as they reckon with desire\, intimacy\, doubt\, and regret\, and the arrangements are similarly bold and thoughtful\, augmenting the duo’s rich\, hypnotic brand of chamber folk with electronic flourishes and R&B grooves. The duo—Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke—produced Olly Olly themselves\, working without an outside collaborator for the first time\, and the result is the purest\, most authentic act of artistic selfexpression the pair have ever achieved.\n\n \n\nTexas natives Baxter and Jahnke first crossed paths at UT Austin\, where they developed a fast friendship and deeply symbiotic musical connection. Beginning with 2013’s ‘Tenboom\,’ the staunchly DIY pair released a series of critically lauded records that prompted NPR to praise their songwriting as a “delicate dance between heartache and resolve” and Rolling Stone to hail their catalog as “folk music for Sunday mornings\, quiet evenings\, and all the fragile moments in between.” The duo’s most recent album\, 2019’s Finch\, debuted at #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart\, racked up more than 40 million streams on Spotify\, and earned the band their biggest headline shows to date.
