SUMMARY:Film Screening:Dissonance: \"The Feeling of Being Watched\"
DESCRIPTION:Dissonance is proud to present free viewing of The Feeling of Being Watched from March 28 to April 7\, and on the afternoon of April 7 a discussion with film's director and Wallace House fellow Assia Boundaoui. Conversation will be facilitated by Wallace House Director Lynette Clemetson\, and will be joined by Roya Ensafi and Tanisha Afnan.\n\nAbout The Feeling of Being Watched \nIn the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where journalist and filmmaker Assia Boundaoui grew up\, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences\, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counter terrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11\, code named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access\, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community—including her own family—fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process\, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation\, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Amplifying students’ voices in the classroom
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, I plan to discuss culturally relevant pedagogy and its importance in our engineering education practices. I also plan to focus on the importance of incorporating the voices of our students\, especially those from traditionally marginalized backgrounds in our teaching practices. My goal is to help participants improve their learning environments and teaching practices by acknowledging and supporting the cultural knowledge and assets that students possess. Just as our learning environments are complex\, so are the individuals that comprise them. Everyone has visible as well as “invisible” cultural identities and culturally relevant pedagogy attends to those differences. Learning happens when we can connect the new knowledge we are receiving to our previous experiences\, so being able to make those connections despite our backgrounds is really important. Similarly\, a key aspect of learning is to feel safe. When we feel safe and recognize that our ideas are valued\, and who we are is important and relevant to the learning community\, we have the motivation to engage with the collective construction of knowledge. Best practices around CRP and some research results will also be shared.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Giving Rare Populations a Voice in Public Opinion Research: Pew Research Center’s Strategies for Surveying Muslim Americans\, Jewish Americans\, and Other Populations
DESCRIPTION:ISR Inclusive Research Matters\nGiving Rare Populations a Voice in Public Opinion Research: Pew Research Center’s Strategies for Surveying Muslim Americans\, Jewish Americans\, and Other Populations\nApril 6\, 2022\, noon ET via Zoom\n\nSpeaker: Courtney Kennedy\, Director of Survey Research at Pew Research Center\n\nAbstract:\n \nA typical public opinion survey cannot provide reliable insights into the attitudes and experiences of relatively small and diverse religious groups\, such as adults identifying as Jewish or Muslim. Not only are the sample sizes too small\, but adults who speak languages such as Russian\, Arabic\, or Farsi (and not English) are excluded from interviewing. This presentation discusses how Pew Research Center has sought to address this research gap by fielding large\, multilingual probability-based surveys of special populations. Examples include the Center’s 2017 Survey of Muslim Americans and the 2020 Survey of Jewish Americans. These studies present numerous challenges in sampling\, recruitment\, crafting appropriate questions\, and weighting. The presentation will also discuss the Center’s methods for studying racial and ethnic populations with the goal of reporting on diversity within these populations\, as opposed to treated them as monolithic groups.\n\nBio:\n\nCourtney Kennedy is director of survey research at Pew Research Center. Her team is responsible for the design of the Center’s U.S. surveys and maintenance of the American Trends Panel. Kennedy conducts experimental research to improve the accuracy of public opinion polls. Her research focuses on nonresponse\, weighting\, modes of administration and sampling frames. Her work has been published in Public Opinion Quarterly\, the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology and the Journal of Official Statistics. She has served as a co-author on five American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) task force reports\, including chairing the committee that evaluated polling in the 2016 presidential election. Prior to joining Pew Research Center\, Kennedy served as vice president of the advanced methods group at Abt SRBI\, where she was responsible for designing complex surveys and assessing data quality. She has served as a statistical consultant for the U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial census and panels convened by the National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine. Kennedy has a doctorate from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland\, both in survey methodology. She received bachelor’s degrees from the University of Michigan in statistics and political science. Kennedy has served as AAPOR standards chair and conference chair.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Immunotherapeutic and Diagnostic Potential of Engineered Materials
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, breast cancer has the highest rates of incidence and mortality among women. For breast cancer diagnoses\, while there is a 99% five-year relative survival rate for localized disease\, survival drops to 29% for progression to metastatic disease. And\, although robust advances have been made in the treatment of localized breast cancer\, few therapies exist to effectively treat metastases. As such\, distant spread marks the disease stage where treatment no longer has curative intent\, and disease progression leads to mortality. The increased mortality with metastasis motivates the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for managing metastatic disease\, and I hypothesize that the microenvironment at the metastatic niche can serve as a target for these strategies.\n\nFirst\, I present a study investigating the utility of cargo-free PLGA nanoparticles (NPs) that\, upon intravenous delivery\, can be internalized by myeloid cells and subsequently alter their impact on the metastatic niche. We demonstrated that NPs reduce metastatic colonization of the lungs in a murine model of metastatic triple negative breast cancer (mTNBC). The NPs were found to modulate the immune microenvironment of the lungs\, skewing myeloid cells toward inflammatory\, anti-tumor phenotypes through single cell RNA sequencing. We then found that the reduction of metastatic spread was dependent on mature T-cells. Finally\, NPs were administered in a primary tumor (PT) resection model and shown to lead to clearance of established metastatic lesions when delivered as an adjuvant therapy\, following surgical resection.\n\nThe treatment of TNBC with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy\, a T-cell targeted immunotherapy\, has shown robust improvements in patient outcomes. However\, while ICB-sensitive patients have durable responses to therapy\, no effective biomarkers are available for predicting ICB-response and stratifying ICB-sensitivity from ICB-resistance. Our lab has previously shown that the immune milieu of a microporous PCL implant\, which recapitulates key features of the native metastatic niche\, can be longitudinally probed for monitoring 1) progression of cancer and 2) response to a PT resection. I investigate the hypothesis that the microporous implant can be longitudinally probed for ICB-response. Divergent responses in TNBC progression\, as a result of anti-PD-1 administration\, were identified and gene expression at the implant allowed for the ability to monitor ICB-response. Differential lymphocyte and myeloid cell responses were also identified that are correlative of the divergent responses to therapy. Finally\, implant-derived gene expressions were probed prior to treatment to investigate predictive analytes for ICB-response before initiating therapy.\n\nOverall\, this dissertation demonstrates the potential for applying engineered materials to 1) modulate cancer-associated myeloid cells to enhance anti-tumor T-cell surveillance with the goal of clearing metastatic disease and 2) probe biomarkers to stratify ICB-response and investigate mechanisms underlying therapy resistance.\n \nDate: Wednesday\, April 6\, 2022\nTime: 2:00 PM EST\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94478502873\nChair: Professor Lonnie D. SUMMARY:Presentation:2022 Ford Distinguished Lecture in Physics | The Magic of Moiré Quantum Matter
DESCRIPTION:Featuring an in-person lecture: 4th Floor Rackham Amphitheatre\nor\nYoutube remote link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcLKoAgfHNs\n\nAbstract:\nThe understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter has challenged physicists for decades. The discovery three years ago of correlated phases and superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene led to the emergence of a new materials platform to investigate strongly correlated physics\, namely moiré quantum matter. These systems exhibit a plethora of quantum phases\, such as correlated insulators\, superconductivity\, magnetism\, Chern insulators\, and more. In this talk\, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will review some of the recent advances in the field\, focusing on the newest generation of moiré quantum systems\, where correlated physics\, superconductivity\, and other fascinating phases can be studied with unprecedented tunability. He will end the talk with an outlook of some exciting directions in this emerging field.\n\nProfessor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from MIT studies novel condensed-matter systems and is especially well-known for his pioneering work with twisted bilayer graphene. \n\nHe has received the 2020 Wolf Prize in Physics and the 2020 Buckley Prize in Condensed Matter Physics\, among many other honors.\n\nThe usual pandemic-related caveats apply\, but we are currently anticipating an in-person lecture and a remote feed as well.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Arnold Sameroff Lecture in Developmental Theory: Relationships and the Regulation of Stress in Human Development
DESCRIPTION:Professor Gunnar will cover research exploring the regulation of stress physiology by relationship partners during human development. Beginning in infancy with the formation of attachment relationships the presence and availability of the attachment figure provides a powerful buffer of the mammalian stress system. This is observed in rodents\, non-human primates and children. This lecture will consider how relationships buffer stress (or not) during childhood and the role that puberty may play in the shift in stress buffering from parental attachment figures to peers and later romantic relationship partners. Professor Gunnar will also consider how early neglect and deprivation may alter the course of the social regulation of stress physiology and the role this may play in the vulnerability and resilience of individuals to stressful life events.

SUMMARY:Performance:Cyanide
DESCRIPTION:Play by Friedrich Wolf\nGermany\, 1929\n\nA Staged Reading directed by Malcolm Tulip\nTranslation by Silke Weineck\n\nThe drama presents the cruel consequences of criminalizing abortion in the Weimar Republic\, exemplified by the story of a pregnant young woman. \n\nWritten by German playwright and physician Friedrich Wolf\, the play had an immediate impact on its audience\, who would soon experience the global repercussions of the 1929 Stock Market Crash. Staged at a moment of acute social\, economic\, and political crisis\, Wolf’s Cyanide is as much a depiction of the sexual\, reproductive\, and class politics of Weimar as it is a call for action. \n\nBrought to you by the German Department in collaboration with the School of Music\, Theatre and Dance as the US Supreme Court appears poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.
