SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Public Opinion on Climate Change: An In-Depth Look
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will examine public opinion on climate change. It follows up work published by Professor Andrew Hoffman 10 years ago. Current data show some encouraging new trends. Also\, the same variables influence people’s attitudes and opinions toward climate and the threats it represents: Liberalism-Conservatism\, political party affiliation\, overall values\, and worldview. Drawing on insights from sociology\, psychology\, and political science\, Professor Hoffman will go on to discuss strategies that may increase public consensus concerning climate change and its mitigation.\n\nDr. Andrew (Andy) Hoffman is the Holcim U.S. Professor Enterprise of Sustainable Enterprises at the University of Michigan\, a position that holds joint appointments in the Stephen. M. Ross School of Business and the School for Environment & Sustainability. SUMMARY:Other:Nickel-Mediated Radical Pathways and Applications to Peptide Modification
DESCRIPTION:Reactions involving organic radical intermediates have been traditionally regarded as overly reactive and unselective. Nickel complexes can mediate reactions involving radicals by forming metallo-radical intermediates\, and thus modulate the reactivity and control the selectivity. We apply organometallic and physical organic techniques to characterize fundamental steps involved in nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions\, including radical generation\, chain propagation\, termination\, and C–C bond formation. Mechanistic insight has informed us in the development of an enantioselective method to modify peptides. The reaction provides a convenient means to access non-canonical peptides that could serve as pharmaceutical targets. \nTianning Diao (New York University)

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Getting the Story Told and Working with the Media
DESCRIPTION:The best ideas still need a communication plan to build awareness and catch on. This is uniquely true for public policy\, where ideas are often shared and vetted through the lens of the media. Developing a message\, telling a story\, and utilizing traditional and social channels to get the word out increases the chance for success.\n\nThis workshop will feature Mara Ostfeld\, Associate Faculty Director and Director of Communications\, and Lauren Slagter\, Senior Communications Specialist of U-M's Poverty Solutions. \n\nMara and Lauren will share their experiences on what makes a successful story\, how to effectively pitch your idea to journalists\, work with reporters\, and prepare for interviews. This workshop will also include a short exercise to help participants learn how to effectively \"get to the point\" -- an essential skill for getting the attention of the media.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Making of “Good” Citizens: Examining the Mechanism of and Public Support for China’s Social Credit System
DESCRIPTION:Zoom webinar registration at: https://myumi.ch/DJW8G\n \nThis talk examines citizen scoring in and public support for China’s Social Credit System (SCS). In the first study\, Dr. Fan analyzed the mechanism of credit scoring embedded in the SCS and show two facets of the SCS: a normative apparatus fostering “good” citizens and a regulative apparatus normalizing “deviant” behaviors. In the second study\, he used a survey experiment to test how different types of monitored behaviors (financial versus non-financial behaviors) and media framing (Chinese media versus Western media) explain public support for the SCS. The findings suggest that when exposed to western media framing\, Chinese citizens’ support decreases\, but only when they are told that the SCS monitors citizens’ social behavior. In conclusion\, he argues that the SCS illustrates the significant shift in which state actors increasingly become data processors whereas citizens are reconfigured as data subjects that can be measured and compared.\n\nFan Liang (PhD\, University of Michigan) is an Assistant Professor of Media in the Division of Social Sciences at Duke Kunshan University. His research examines how new communication technologies construct social and political changes. His research has received recognition and support from the British Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development Office\, American Council of Learned Societies\, Volkswagen Foundation\, International Communication Association\, and other organizations.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Reclaiming Wastewater with Increasing Salinity for Potable Water Reuse
DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on part two of a three-part project that considers synergistic integration of potable water reuse and desalination systems. The energy impact of combining reverse osmosis (RO) brine streams and regional brine interceptor/collector streams with wastewater upstream of RO desalination at a potable reuse facility were evaluated. It was found that the percent energy increase in treating high-salinity streams decreases as background wastewater salinity increases\; thus\, marginal energy consumption is expected to have a decreasing trend in future years.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Moving beyond the medium with Jad Abumrad
DESCRIPTION:Navigating today’s complex and rapidly changing music industry is a daunting task. Mythologies abound on the key steps you need to launch and sustain a music career\, but what does it really take to carve out a path that fulfills personal goals and makes the world a better place? Curated and hosted by Matthew Dear\, in collaboration with the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab\, this virtual seminar investigates those questions through the lens of five leaders who have paved unique\, transformative pathways to success. \n\nOver the course of Fall 2021\, Matthew Dear interviewed five luminaries who have carved out unique\, highly-impactful\, and innovative careers that intersect music\, entrepreneurship\, social impact\, and creative storytelling. These interviews propel through the personal stories of each guest to illuminate the complexity of finding one’s path to self-actualization\, while framing the circuitous paths that are central to nearly every successful professional arts journey today.\n\nJad Abumrad is a composer\, musician and the host and creator of several podcasts (Radiolab\, More Perfect\, Dolly Parton’s America\, Unerased) that collectively are downloaded over 130 million times a year. He’s been hailed for his unique ability to combine cutting edge sound-design\, cinematic storytelling and a personal approach to explaining complex topics\, from the stochasticity of tumor cells to the legal foundations of the war on terror. Jad studied creative writing and music composition at Oberlin College in Ohio. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2021-22 Speaker Series with Katharine Thakkar\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe ability to make rapid behavioral adjustments is critical in a dynamic environment\, and impaired action control is associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders\, including schizophrenia. Rapid action modification and cancellation has been investigated using the stop-signal task and related paradigms. These paradigms require a fast response to a movement cue unless a subsequent signal is presented that instructs participants to inhibit or change the planned movement. Performance on these tasks is modeled as a race between competing STOP and GO processes\, which permits an estimation of the time it takes to stop a prepared action—stop-signal reaction time. Using oculomotor versions of such tasks\, nonhuman primate studies have investigated the cellular basis of reactive action control and performance monitoring. This body of neurophysiology work provides a firm basis from which to understand the brain circuits supporting reactive action control in humans. In this talk\, I will present work that uses fMRI to examine the network involved in rapid cancellation\, modification\, and monitoring of gaze in humans. In addition\, I will present a series of studies indicating reduced efficiency of action cancellation in individuals with schizophrenia that are related to symptoms and functional outcomes and more recent work demonstrating altered activation in a frontobasal network in individuals with schizophrenia while performing a modified oculomotor stop-signal task. Combined\, this work provides a link between mechanisms of action control in humans and non-human primates and insights into potential mechanisms of inefficient action control in individuals with schizophrenia. \n\nYou can attend in person: 4 p.m. Chemistry & Dow Willard H Laboratory (Central Campus)\, Room 1300.\n\nYou can attend via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91394388153\,\npasscode: 892467
