SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:EEB thesis defense: The role of Pseudacteon spp. on the coexistence between invasive Solenopsis invicta and Wasmannia auropunctata on Puerto Rican coffee farms
DESCRIPTION:Please see your email or contact eeb.gradcoord@umich.edu at least two hours prior to the event for the link and passcode. \n\nAbstract\nAgricultural settings such as coffee farms function as novel ecosystems\, having multiple species that have not interacted with each other at any other point in history and constant human intervention. The ant community on Puerto Rican coffee farms has experienced this novelty\, with the most dominant ant species being invasive. S. invicta and W. auropunctata both cause economic loss during the coffee harvest\, due to their powerful stings targeting farmworkers while they are in the coffee. W. auropunctata is the most dominant across many farms\, while S. invicta is the second most dominant. W. auropunctata is behaviorally passive in comparison to S. invicta\, which is much more aggressive when encountering other ants. However\, two different Puerto Rican farms\, Gran Batey and Casa Pueblo\, are seeing two different stages of dominance between W. auropunctata and S. invicta. Phorid flies (Pseudacteon spp.) may be responsible for this difference and for S. invicta not being the dominant ant. Phorid flies are parasitoids that specialize on S. invicta\, limiting their competitive abilities in their native ranges. We hypothesize that phorid flies may be mediating the coexistence of the two species\, ultimately allowing W. auropunctata to be the dominant ant. In this study\, we conduct a disturbance survey and foraging survey to assess when and where phorids are most active and compare this activity between Gran Batey and Casa Pueblo. We find that phorid fly activity increases throughout the day\, with the most activity at 12 p.m. Additionally\, we find that Casa Pueblo\, who is experiencing W. auropunctata dominance\, has more phorid flies and more phorid fly attacks in comparison to Gran Batey which is currently experiencing S. invicta dominance. We conclude that phorid flies cause trait-mediated indirect effects (TMIE) on S. invicta\, allowing them to coexist with the rest of the ant community on Puerto Rican coffee farms.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Central Asia in World Literature: A Conversation with Hamid Ismailov
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid event will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and via Zoom. Zoom registration is here: https://myumi.ch/qAQkZ\n\nUzbek-British writer and journalist Hamid Ismailov’s work spans the end of the Soviet period and the entry of the former Soviet republics into a globalized\, post-Cold War world. In this talk\, Ismailov will speak about these themes in his own work\, which tracks Central Asia’s role in a changing global political and literary scene. The talk will also touch on Central Asia’s place in Soviet and post-Soviet literature\, as well as on the multilingual nature of Ismailov’s writing\, which spans Uzbek\, Russian\, and English.\n\n Born in 1954 in Tokmok\, Kyrgyzstan\, Hamid Ismailov is an Uzbek journalist and writer who was forced to flee Uzbekistan in 1992 due to what the state dubbed “unacceptable democratic tendencies.” He emigrated to the United Kingdom\, where he worked with the BBC World Service for 25 years. His works are banned in Uzbekistan. He is the author of numerous novels in Russian and Uzbek. Several of his Russian-original novels have been published in English translation\, including The Railway\, The Dead Lake\, which was long listed for the 2015 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize\, and The Underground. The Devils’ Dance is the first of his Uzbek novels to appear in English\, and the translation by Donald Rayfield and John Farndon won the 2019 ERBD Literature Prize. The Devils’ Dance forms a trilogy alongside Of Strangers and Bees and Ismailov’s new novel\, Manaschi.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Unique in what sense? Heterogeneous relationships between multiple types of uniqueness and popularity in music
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK\nLink: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99929959678\nPasscode: csaaw\n\nAbstract: \nWhat makes a song popular? This fundamental puzzle has intrigued scholars in fields as diverse as psychology\, sociology\, and anthropology. It has been theorized that songs (or other cultural products) that balance familiarity and novelty are more likely to become popular. However\, a song's novelty is typically multifaceted. In this paper\, we first unpack the multiple facets of a song's novelty or uniqueness and\, next\, measure its impact on a song's popularity. We employ a series of statistical models to study the relationship between a song's popularity and novelty associated with its lyrics\, chord progressions\, or acoustic properties. Our analyses performed on a dataset of over fifty thousand songs find a consistently negative association between all types of song novelty and popularity. Overall we found a song's lyrical uniqueness to have the most significant association with its popularity. However\, acoustic uniqueness was the strongest predictor of a song's popularity\, conditional on the song's genre. We further found the theme and repetitiveness of a song's lyrics to mediate the relationship between the song's popularity and novelty. Broadly\, our results contradict the ``optimal distinctiveness theory'' (balance novelty and familiarity) and call for an investigation into the multiple dimensions along which a cultural product's uniqueness could manifest.\n\nSpeaker bio: \nYulin Yu is a 2nd year PhD student in School of Information at University of Michigan\, advised by Daniel Romero. Her research interest is broadly in computational social science and information diffusion. Specifically\, she applies data science methods including causal inference\, network analysis\, natural language processing\, machine learning\, and experiments to study what drives the popularity of people (e.g artists\, scientists) and cultural artifacts (e.g music\, vlog\, social media posts). She is very interested in understanding these topics in global and cross-cultural perspectives.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Between the Carceral University and Police-Free Futures
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of national discourses about the future of policing\, many higher education leaders are reconsidering their institution’s relationship to municipal and campus police. As student activists have raised critical questions about campus police department budgets\, hiring practices\, and whether police are needed as first-responders on college campuses at all\, concerns about student safety\, campus crime\, and conjecture surrounding the universities’ inability to resolve crises if campus police structures are altered have guided institutional responses to growing criticism.\n\nAs an attempt to address this social and political moment\, Between the Carceral University and Police-Free Futures brings together concerned campus and community stakeholders to discuss the many and varied ways contemporary colleges and universities create the conditions that necessitate policing and prisons. In conversation with professor and director of the Campus Abolition Research Lab\, Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III\, an interdisciplinary panel will engage the conceptual underpinnings of abolitionist praxis and consider the possibilities for higher and postsecondary education to reimagine itself as a life-affirming institution.\n\nPart of our Research & Community Impact Fellow series\, this session is co-sponsored by the Anti-Racism Collaborative\, the University of Michigan's strategic space for engagement around anti-racism research and scholarship and part of the provost's anti-racism initiative\; the Diversity Scholars Network\, a scholarly community committed to advancing understandings of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity\, difference\, culture\, representation\, power\, oppression\, and inequality\; and the Campus Abolition Research Lab (CARL).\n \n\nModerator: Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III\, 2022 Anti-Racism Collaborative Research & Community Impact Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan\n\nPanelists:\n\nDr. Davarian L. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Conversations Across Social Disciplines
DESCRIPTION:Recent police killings and related uprisings have cast a renewed spotlight on the role of social service systems and social workers to provide care-based alternatives to systems of punishment. Yet scholarship and practice reveal how punishment and oppression are entrenched in many ostensibly caring social service systems’ daily operations—including child welfare\, healthcare\, and violence prevention—creating challenges for social workers and allied change agents in dismantling punishment and building instead what Ruth Wilson Gilmore calls “life-affirming institutions.” This Conversations Across Social Disciplines event will facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue on change in and new models of social service systems\, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in building life-affirming institutions that cultivate care\, while also uncovering both the explicit and covert dangers in existing social service systems.

SUMMARY:Performance:How Do We Begin: A Historical Reckoning with Anti-Black Racism at U-M
DESCRIPTION:Written by guest playwright and U-M alumn Jordan Harris\, this short series of plays illuminates U-M’s complicated relationship with elitism and racial inequity. Using Matthew Johnson’s book Undermining Racial Justice (a historical analysis of the admissions processes at U-M) as an entry point\, the play examines how American colleges and universities—and U-M specifically—have perpetuated anti-Blackness while simultaneously benefiting from their association with inclusive values. Through a series of facilitated discussion and activities\, participants will wrestle with a central question: with an understanding of our inequitable past and present\, how will we imagine and pursue a racially just future?\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact Rack-prof-dev@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/Z669p.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCAIM Colloquium - Emergence of General Relativity from a (Diffeomorphism Invariant) Gauge Theory
DESCRIPTION:Space-time metric and Einstein's equations lie at the foundation of general relativity. Somewhat surprisingly\, one can start with an SU(2)-gauge theory\, write down the simplest equations one can\, without making reference to any background field\, and show that the Riemannian geometry and Einstein's equations emerge by setting up an appropriate dictionary. Equations of the `fundamental' gauge theory are simple low order polynomials. Complexity of Einstein's equations can be traced back to the fact that the explicit dictionary from the gauge theory to general relativity is rather intricate. The gauge theory framework provides new insights into general relativity\, including an interesting interplay between the Lie algebra of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the 'integrable' sector of (anti-)self-dual solutions to Einstein's equations. It also leads to a new infinite dimensional Lie algebra that generalizes the Lie algebra of the diffeomorphism group\, opening up directions for new mathematical work. I will make a special eort to make the summary of these structures and results accessible to mathematicians as well as physicists.\n\nJoin us in-person or on Zoom: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91494048285 \nMeeting ID: 914 9404 8285\nPasscode: 387662

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2022 Captain R. & Florence Peachman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:4 PM 1050 Ford Robotics Bldg with Reception to follow in lobby\n\nKaren A. Flack is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis\, Maryland. She received a bachelor’s degree from Rice University\, a master’s degree from the University of California\, Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford University\, all in Mechanical Engineering. Professor Flack teaches courses in thermodynamics\, fluid mechanics\, heat transfer\, and design. Her research focuses on turbulent boundary layer physics with a concentration on rough wall boundary layers and frictional drag prediction. Recent work also includes performance characteristics of tidal turbines in unsteady flow conditions. She is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow\, Experiments in Fluids and Flow Turbulence and Combustion. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has received the following: an ASME award for best paper in the Journal of Fluids Engineering\, a Pi Tau Sigma teaching award\, the Naval Academy Research award and United States government meritorious service medals.\n\nSignificant progress has been made towards the understanding of rough-wall boundary layers and the subsequent drag penalty. Continued progress is promising since a larger range of parameter space can now be investigated experimentally and numerically. Recent advances in rapid prototyping techniques enables the generation of systematic variations of roughness scales and computationally efficient simulations with creative surface mapping techniques allows for experiments and computations to investigate similar complex roughness. While a universal drag prediction correlation is still elusive and may not be possible\, predictive correlations for classes of surface roughness pertinent to engineering applications seem achievable. Three surface parameters based solely on surface statistics are showing promise in predictive correlations for a range of studies. These include a measure of surface elevation a slope parameter and the skewness of the surface elevation probability density function. Other candidate parameters that may be useful in a predictive correlation or a surface filter are the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths. The challenges to represent this wide range of surface conditions and potential scales to characterize engineering roughness including biofouling in predictive correlations will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chimeras
DESCRIPTION:The Modern Greek Program is delighted to invite you to a presentation by poet Phoebe Giannisi on her poetics of \"Chimeras\" on Wednesday\, April 13 at 4:15 pm at the Michigan Room of the Michigan League. Professor Giannisi will talk and perform her work. She is the first Program's first Vakalo Family Visiting Artist.\n\n\"Chimeras\" in ancient Greek are female goats and any mythical animal with parts taken from various animals. In biology\, a chimera is an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues. For Donna Haraway\, we are all chimeras\, cyborgs\, hybrids of machine and organism. Professor Giannis’s chimeric works slide between different media taking form through performative actions. Key elements are the music of place\, animal voices\, myths and memory\; and fragments on identity\, genre\, gender\, and the species drawn from ancient Greek poetry \n\nBorn in Athens\, Phoebe Giannisi is a poet and professor of Architecture at the University of Thessaly and the author of 8 books of poetry and a book on architecture. She holds degrees in Architecture\, Philosophy\, and a PhD in Classics. Her poetry moves between word\, performance\, and installation and investigates the connections of poetics with body and place. Giannisi has published 2 books in English\, both translated by Brian Sneeden: Homerica (World Poetry Books: 2017) and recently\, Cicada (New Directions: 2022).\n\nThe Vakalo Family Visiting Artist and Scholar Fund in the Modern Greek Program was created in 2018 through a gift by Kathleen Vakalo to provide support for visiting residencies by emerging scholars and artists. The Vakalo name is known throughout Greece for the wide range of contributions by George and Eleni Vakalo to poetry\, the visual arts\, criticism\, education and cultural activism. Their son\, Dr. George- Emmanuel Vakalo\, brought this legacy to the University of Michigan as a professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Kathleen Vakalo\, the widow of Dr. George-Emmanuel Vakalo\, has established the endowed fund to honor her family’s contributions to Greek culture and to continue the connections between the Vakalo Family and the University of Michigan by supporting emerging scholars and artists and bringing contemporary Greece to an international audience\, above and beyond the achievements of the country’s ancient past.\n\n#Vakalo

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Recent Progress in 2D Materials
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nThe quantum mechanical electronic states of a solid are set by its chemical composition and atomic structure. The electronic states in turn determine the interesting quantum phases that the solid exhibits. Tuning quantum phases in solids is therefore typically achieved using solid-state chemistry to change composition or structure. Over the past 15 years\, the class of two-dimensional materials has emerged as a new playground to realize quantum phenomena. This class of materials began with graphene\, but has quickly blossomed to include two-dimensional semiconductors\, insulators\, topological insulators\, superconductors and magnets. Individual atomic layers of these materials can now be assembled nearly at will into unique multilayer structures by the simple process of \"putting things on top of other things\". In this talk\, I will review some of the recent developments in this field that now allow us to realize many unique electronic structures using basic building blocks that are individual atomic sheets\, and the new quantum phases that emerge in these structures. I will also discuss the many exciting but unrealized possibilities for the future in this materials class.\n\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:The Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP) Speaker Series: Lifestyle change and health in the Turkana people of northern Kenya
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe environments experienced by individuals living “modern”\, “urban”\, or “Western” lifestyles are deeply diverged from the ancestral selection pressures that have shaped human genomes through evolutionary time. Consequently\, many have hypothesized that this “mismatch” —between evolved human phenotypes and modern life—is responsible for increasing rates of non-communicable diseases worldwide. However\, despite the popularity and intuitive appeal of this idea\, it has been difficult to test in practice. In particular\, we lack direct evidence that health issues emerge when populations adapted to subsistence-level practices encounter modern\, urban environments. Further\, we lack an understanding of how the many factors that change during urban transitions\, including physical activity\, diet\, early life conditions\, and the social environment\, interact to ultimately impact health. My research aims to address these gaps\, by working with the Turkana people of Northwest Kenya who are currently transitioning from a traditional\, pastoralist lifestyle to an urban\, market-integrated lifestyle. By collecting genomic\, anthropological\, and biomedical data from across this lifestyle gradient\, my work aims to address 1) how the Turkana have adapted through evolutionary time to their pastoralist lifestyle\, 2) the degree to which health and disease risk are altered when individuals from this locally adapted genetic background move to cities\, and 3) how early life experiences\, social environmental conditions\, diet\, and other key factors contribute to lifestyle effects on health. Together\, this work aims to shed new light on our evolutionary interpretation of environmentally induced disease in a unique population.

SUMMARY:Performance:Adia Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nAdia Victoria is a daughter of the South\, a born and bred South Carolinian who now makes her home in Nashville\, Tennessee. It is no surprise\, then\, that stories of the South find their way into her music\, into the lyrics she pens and the chords she plays. It has been the case through her first two albums—2016’s Beyond the Bloodhounds and 2019’s Silences—and it remains so for third full-length effort\, A Southern Gothic. This time\, though\, the stories don’t just belong to Victoria.\n\n“I feel like it is the first record where I was able to get enough distance from what I thought was myself in order to look out and tell stories that were not necessarily my own\,” she explains. “Because my immediate conditions were so limited it opened my imagination to think of other people\, other characters\, other perceptions and experiences that are all rooted in the south\, to this land that informs us\, that we grow on and grow in.”
