SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Presentation:Thesis Defense: Robust and Computationally Efficient Methods for High-Throughput Drug Screening Studies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: There is an increasing emphasis on the utility of large-scale biological experiments to advance our understanding of human biological processes. The analysis of data from these studies\, however\, can face challenges associated with data size and complexity. For instance\, two large pharmacogenomic databases\, the Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer (GDSC) and the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE)\, have been widely used to explore genetic predictors of drug sensitivity and to develop and study hypotheses about new anti-cancer therapies. At the same time\, several papers have reported only moderate levels of agreement in drug sensitivity estimates between GDSC and CCLE with the discordance largely attributed to experimental and analytical factors\, including differences in cell viability assay\, range of tested drug concentrations\, and construction of dose-response curves. There has been no published in-depth exploration\, however\, of the raw drug screening data from GDSC and CCLE. Therefore\, we examine the raw data from both studies and identify technical variation such as complex spatial biases and batch-specific outliers. We show how these errors propagate through downstream calculations of relative viability and measures of drug sensitivity. Additionally\, we note that technical error can interact with aspects of plate design such as the location of control wells along plate edges and the consistent orientation of drugged wells across replicates creating challenges for analysis. These findings highlight the importance of exploring the raw drug screening data prior to pursuing an analysis. They also inform a number of strategies for improving experimental design\, such as randomized plate layouts. \n\nTo eliminate the effects of such between-plate variation in high-throughput drug screening studies\, intensity measurements for treated wells are often normalized to the control wells. Such normalization allows for comparability across plates and across studies. However\, within-plate variability\, including spatial biases\, cannot be alleviated by normalization to the controls. Therefore\, we provide a normalization framework that addresses multiple types of spatial effects and can handle complex plate layouts. We carefully apply this normalization framework to the drug screening data from GDSC. Our normalization produces more reliable measures of drug sensitivity than current methods. \n\nFinally\, many existing methods for high-dimensional classification\, including those used for pharmacogenomic data\, require a substantial amount of computing time and power. Specifically\, the use of cross-validation for tuning parameter selection and error estimation can be particularly time-consuming. Therefore\, we introduce an approximate leave-one-out cross-validation approach for principal component linear discriminant analysis that is computationally more efficient than existing methods. In particular\, our method obviates the need to select tuning parameter values and optimizes computational efficiency through a series of matrix downdates. We apply our method to simulated data as well as to pharmacogenomic data from GDSC. For the type of genomic data for which this method is intended\, it has comparable accuracy to existing approaches\, while improving on computation time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2022 Kelbaugh Lecture: David Brown
DESCRIPTION:Taubman College presents the Inaugural Kelbaugh Lecture featuring David Brown\, Chicago-based designer\, researcher\, and educator\, and artistic director of the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial.\n\nWhat is the potential of The Available City\, Chicago’s 15\,000 city-owned vacant lots as a collective space system\, an urban design\, and a future we can have today? How can a community-oriented approach shift perspectives in how cities are built and vacant urban spaces are transformed? Deeply rooted in a framework for collaboration and community-led design\, Brown asks us to consider the collective impact that space can have in cities today.\n\nBrown’s work investigates non-hierarchical\, flexible\, and variable approaches to urban design within The Available City\, an ongoing speculation on the potential of Chicago’s city-owned vacant land. Iterations of the speculative design have been exhibited in the Venice Architecture Biennale (2012)\, the Chicago Cultural Center’s Expo 72 (2013)\, the Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015)\, and received a grant from the Graham Foundation in 2011. As an implementation of the project\, he is currently working with organizations in North Lawndale to develop two collective spaces. \n\nBrown’s essays and drawings presenting the transformative impact The Available City can have on Chicago’s South and West Sides are found in CENTER 18: Music in Architecture—Architecture in Music\, the Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies\, volume 2\, and Flat Out 4. Those essays advance his study of design and structures in jazz that facilitate improvisation\, which he initiated in the book Noise Orders (University of Minnesota Press\, 2006).\n\nBrown has lectured on his work at Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies and the Politecnico di Milano and has taught at Florida A&M University and Rice University. He is currently a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and a Master of Architecture from University of California\, Berkeley.\n\nThe inaugural Kelbaugh Lecture\, generously funded through an endowed fund given by Douglas Kelbaugh and Katherine Nolan.\n\nCourtesy of Chicago Architecture Biennial / Nathan Keay\, 2020\n© Chicago Architecture Biennial / Nathan Keay\, 2020

SUMMARY:Presentation:PSC/GFP Colloquium: Gender and Race Gatekeeping
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Hebl focuses on the notion of gatekeepers\, or people or policies that act to prevent others from gaining access to knowledge\, opportunities\, and/or employment. By reviewing a number of empirical-based studies\, Dr. Hebl will review the many ways in which others gatekeep women. Such differences-are not only gender-based but are also race-based\; and she describes some recent research looking at gatekeeping that shows within (not just between) race-based differences.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Mikki Hebl graduated with her B.A. from Smith College and Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. She joined the faculty at Rice University in 1998\, and is currently the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Professor of Psychology with a joint appointment in the Jones School. Dr. Hebl's research focuses on workplace discrimination and the ways both individuals and organizations can remediate such discrimination and successfully manage diversity. She has approximately 175 publications\, 21 teaching awards (including the most prestigious national award called the Cherry Award)\, research grants from NSF and NIH\, and several gender-related research awards. For instance\, in 2014\, she was honored with the Academy of Management’s Sage Award for lifetime achievement in research advancing knowledge of gender and diversity in organizations\, and in 2018\, she was selected as the recipient of the Woman in Academia with Outstanding Career Award from the business school at the University of Lausanne\, Switzerland.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Andean Circle Workshop Series. Mapping Violence: The Lucanamarca Case (Ayacucho - Peru)
DESCRIPTION:The internal armed conflict in south-central Peru began in 1980\, in the Ayacucho region. The Shining Path started to take control of the poorest and most forgotten areas of the Ayacucho territory. Peru's incipient democracy\, after more than a decade of military dictatorship\, did not have an adequate strategy to confront this threatening situation.\n \nIn early 1983\, the villagers from Lucanamarca decided to confront the Shining Path. However\, the latter took revenge and killed in cold blood 69 individuals\, including elderly and children. Although the police and military support arrived late and tried to catch Shining Path members. This attempt at counterattack was not successful and led to more extrajudicial killings.\n \n In this workshop\, we will reconstruct this event by using maps and GIS. The main goal will be to recreate maps of violence focused on the Lucanamarca massacre. This workshop will demonstrate how spatial analysis can be used to better understand war scenarios and reconstruct the historical context of this dark episode of Peruvian history.\n \nThis event is hosted by the Andean Circle Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.\n\nVirtual event: Registration is required at https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0ofu6rpj0vGdS-zl8DCkbMlGiOro1HKMGj

SUMMARY:Presentation:Reimagining Primary Health Care for Individuals with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Webinar registration link: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5NqKB4IwQHaNSB4TR6baNw\n\nNearly 1 in 4 individuals report a disability\, yet current health care is poorly equipped to care for them. Individuals with disabilities report miscommunication\, inaccessible health equipment and facilities\, reduced awareness and training by health care providers\, and low patient satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. These factors contribute to existing health inequities. Rethinking and redesigning our health care through the guidance of innovative clinics and programs is needed to address these inequities and care for these individuals effectively. This webinar will review current models and strategies that could be widely adopted in health care. These steps can make health care more inclusive and equitable.\n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services will be available to provide live closed captions.\n\nIn addition\, this webinar has been approved for CME credit. The University of Michigan Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: A Journey into Pressure Gain Combustion in Rotating Detonation Engines
DESCRIPTION:Mirko Gamba\nAssociate Professor\nAerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nAlthough the concept of using a rotating detonation wave in an enclosed (annular) chamber as a means of effective combustion dates back to the 1960’s\, its use in rotating detonation engines (RDEs) has gained much attention only in recent years because of the thermodynamic benefits it offers for propulsion and power generation applications. The benefit offered by an RDE over conventional constant pressure combustion of traditional systems arises from the fact that\, at least ideally\, chemical energy release occurs at nearly constant volume across a detonation wave\, rather than in a deflagrating region. Unlike a traditional deflagration-based combustor where a pressure loss up to 5-8% can be experienced\, the constant volume combustion provides an effective compression of the post-combustion gases over that provided by the compression stage. It is this additional compression that results in what is referred to as pressure gain\, which ultimately translates into increased amount of work extracted from the system\, making an RDE a pressure gain combustion (PGC) device. Drawing from our experiment\, we will first discuss the basic operation of an RDE. Then\, we will focus on one specific configuration\, and introduce and discuss a series of phenomena that control the operation of the device\, the dynamics of the detonation wave and possibly\, its ability to generate pressure gain. Specifically\, we will discuss the presence and impact of systems of secondary waves and secondary combustion fronts. In combination\, they impact the stability and properties of the detonation wave\, with consequences on achieving robust operation and gain in practical applications.\n\n\nAbout the speaker:\nMirko Gamba is an Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His research focuses on fundamental research in a diverse range of advanced and sustainable application concepts for propulsion and energy conversion systems\, using laser diagnostics techniques as tools to investigate fundamental phenomena that control operation of these systems.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/93096785925\; Passcode: AE585

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:From Restrooms to Classrooms: Universal
DESCRIPTION:Universal Design is a concept dating back to the 1960’s\, primarily in the field of architecture. The major concept concerns the design implementation and usage of spaces in which individuals live their day-to-day life. \n\nWhile addressing major issues affecting persons with handicaps or disabilities\, the purpose of Universal Design is to allow all people from infancy to old age and with a range of special abilities to conduct their lives in as normal of a way as possible. In our presentation we shall include approaches involving physical spaces as well as learning environments\, hence the title “From Restrooms to Classrooms: Universal Design”. Topics may range from implementing spaces such as restrooms to learning environments including classrooms and workplaces. \n\nAccompanying our speaker\, Professor Hagen\, will be two undergraduate research assistants\, Makiah Tripp & Linda Fan. \n\nThis class meets on Thursdays\, from April 14 – April 21. No classes on holidays.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Isolation of NK Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Using the Single Cell Droplet Microfluidics CellMag-CARWash System
DESCRIPTION:The Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by cells play a crucial role in intercellular communication by transporting chemical signaling molecules like proteins\, lipids\, DNA\, and RNA through the extracellular environment. The importance of EVs in signaling pathways has only recently been widely recognized\, and while many studies investigate EV secretion in bulk cell samples\, few studies are published on this occurrence at a single cell level. By examining single cell-derived EVs\, variations in the cell populations could be better characterized\, demonstrating cellular heterogeneity in populations of cells. Cellular heterogeneity affects the behavior of individual cells in complex cellular networks\, which is why novel techniques for single cell isolation are being developed to better characterize individual cell phenotypes. One specific method of sample purification is droplet microfluidics\, in which the sample is contained by aqueous droplets suspended in an oil layer that can be manipulated using microfluidics. Benefits of this method include low reagent volume requirements and high throughput.\n\nIn my thesis\, an experimental workflow for the isolation of single NK cell-derived EVs is presented and optimized. NK cells are cultured\, dyed\, attached to magnetic beads\, encapsulated in an oil droplet at a single cell level\, and inputted into the “Coalesce-Attract-Resegment Wash” (CAR-Wash) system developed by the Bailey lab. Using microfluidic junctions and magnetic forces\, the CAR-Wash separates NK cell-bead complexes from any other cells or waste in the solution. The droplets are then observed over time to monitor EV secretion. Aspects such as encapsulated cell viability\, generation of fluorescent exosomes\, and blocking of non-specific binding between EVs and paramagnetic beads are investigated through extensive testing. This is done using techniques such as nanoparticle tracking analysis and fluorescence microscopy. To apply the EV isolation approach described above\, NK cells are exposed to IL-18 and their EV secretion is monitored to determine how IL-18 influences EV biogenesis on a single cell level.\n\nDATE: Thursday\, April 14\, 2022\nTIME: 3:00 PM\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/93165855971 (passcode: bmedefense)\nChair: Prof. Sunitha Nagrath

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Astronomy Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:Title: Searching for Nearby Dwarf Galaxies to Learn about Dark Matter\n\nAbstract: \nDwarf galaxies are abundant in number and rich in their dark components. The observation of these little galaxies can provide solid constraints on the physical properties of dark matter\, if we are equipped with two critical ingredients: the ability to efficiently discover nearby dwarf galaxies\, and a better understanding of the coevolution between galaxies and their dark matter halos. I will describe recent advances in modeling this galaxy-halo coevolution\, and how these models\, together with galaxy surveys\, can jointly inform us about galaxy formation and dark matter physics. I will then turn the focus to the search for dwarf galaxies\, starting with the SAGA Survey\, a spectroscopic survey that looks for satellite dwarf galaxies in nearby Milky Way-like systems. I will show how the SAGA results put our own Milky Way in a cosmological context and provide constraints on the galaxy-halo coevolution models. Finally I will discuss how the technique and data from the SAGA Survey can be applied to other dwarf galaxy searches\, including an ongoing secondary target program with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)\, and our future plan for the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Both programs will enable us to identify a much larger population of dwarf galaxies in coming years to reveal the fundamental physics of dark matter.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Breaking barriers to drug and cellular delivery for cancer and other diseases
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nA myriad of challenges plague current efforts toward safe and effective disease treatment. In the realm of small molecule drugs and biologicals\, systemic administration leads to diffuse biodistribution and systemic side effects that limit doses and efficacy. Local depot can overcome some of these challenges\, but these suffer from depot exhaustion and dose-limiting local impact. With cellular therapeutics\, a costly and labor-intensive manufacturing process inflates the price and limits patient access. This seminar will describe our lab’s efforts to tackle the challenges of therapeutic delivery and access through the development of two technologies. First\, we have developed injectable drug-eluting depots that can be repeatedly and noninvasively refilled by systemic administration of inert protodrug refills. Refillable depots enable repeat local drug presentation\, temporal regulation\, and the prospect of changing drug or dose with disease progression. Second\, we have developed biomaterial scaffolds that recapitulate the key functions of ex vivo CAR-T cell production (activation\, transduction\, expansion) inside the body\, reducing CAR-T cell manufacturing from the conventional 4-8 weeks of effort to a single day. The application and utility of these technology in both cancer as well as other diseases will be highlighted.\nBio:\nYevgeny is a Joint Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC – Chapel Hill and NC State – Raleigh. He earned dual B.A. degrees in Chemistry and Biophysics with minors in Math and Philosophy. He obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry at Harvard University\, developing directed evolution technologies with Prof. David R. Liu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: How (and why) to get a tenure-track job at a non research-1 university
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract\nMany Ph.D. students and postdocs at Research-1 (R1) universities are interested in exploring academic careers at non-academic universities\, including liberal arts colleges and master's-granting universities. However\, resources on how to prepare to be competitive in applications for job openings may be scarce at R1 universities because advising faculty are most familiar with preparation for applying for R1 jobs. I am a professor of biological sciences at a public\, master's-granting institution where I have served on numerous tenure-track faculty search committees over the past 18 years. In this presentation\, I give attendees practical advice on how to prepare to apply for tenure-track jobs at non-R1 universities\, including important experience they should have\, how to write the cover letter\, teaching statement\, research statement\, and diversity statement\, and advice for phone and on-campus interviews. Though the talk is geared toward graduate students and postdocs\, faculty are welcome to attend so that they can better advise students interested in non-R1 jobs. \n\nImage credit: Brittany App

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Little Ice Age and the Oyo Empire: An Unfinished Process of Recovery in West Africa\, ca. 1420-1840
DESCRIPTION:Presented with support from the African Studies Center.\n\nThis lecture is presented in hybrid format: in-person in 1014 Tisch Hall and virtual via Zoom webinar (register: https://myumi.ch/M9JPR).\n\nThis lecture highlights the crisis and aftermath of the Little Ice Age in West Africa\, with emphasis on the ramifications it had for (1) the emergence and decline of the Oyo Empire and (2) the entanglement of the empire and the Bight of Benin in the early modern commercial revolution. The entire history of the Oyo Empire was shaped by the quest to cope with the erratic climatic regime of the Little Ice Age. What were the opportunities and limitations of these coping strategies\, what Professor Ogundiran calls the unfinished process of recovery?\n\nAkin Ogundiran is Chancellor’s Professor and Professor of Africana Studies\, Anthropology\, and History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Professor Ogundiran’s scholarship has focused primarily on the deep-time cultural history of the Yoruba world\, Atlantic Africa\, and the African Diaspora. His research has been supported by the National Geographic Society\, American Institute of Archaeology\, and American Philosophical Society\, among others. He is also a past fellow of the National Humanities Center. Professor Ogundiran's latest book is The Yoruba: A New History (Indiana University Press\, 2020).\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Harnessing the Power of Perturbation Theory for Accurate Spectroscopic Simulations of Molecules and Materials
DESCRIPTION:Accurate and affordable simulation of how molecules and materials interact with light remains one of the greatest challenges in theoretical chemistry. Modeling photochemical reactions requires quantum mechanical description of the electronic structure in ground and excited electronic states. Despite significant advances in quantum chemistry\, most of the available electronic structure methods for accurate simulations of excited states are computationally very expensive and have limited applications. In this talk\, I will describe our group’s research on the development of new methods for the spectroscopic simulations of molecules and materials using the framework of algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) theory. The ADC approach strikes a careful balance between computational accuracy and efficiency by calculating excited-state energies and electronic spectra from a linear-response function approximated by low-order perturbation theory. In the first half of my talk\, I will briefly outline the theoretical foundations of ADC and demonstrate its calculations of charged excited states and photoelectron spectra of molecules and materials. In the second half\, I will present a new formulation of ADC called multireference ADC that enables accurate spectroscopic simulations of molecules with complicated electronic structure. I will conclude my talk by outlining the prospects for future developments of this theoretical approach.\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Hybrid FAST Lecture | Encrusted in Ancestors: Formal Reflections on the Funerary Reliefs of Palmyra
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker is Assistant Curator and Assistant Professor of History of Art Dr. Nicola Barham. Her research combines close visual analysis and the study of material contexts and textual sources to reconstruct\, and subsequently analyze\, the visual culture of the ancient Roman world. Dr. Barham's work considers marginalized ethnic groups whose works (particularly funerary reliefs and mosaics) have been sidelined in accounts of ancient Roman art.\n\nIn this FAST Lecture\, entitled \"Encrusted in Ancestors: Formal Reflections on the Funerary Reliefs of Palmyra\,\" Dr. Barham analyzes the aesthetic strategies of the iconic funerary reliefs of Palmyra\, taking the portrait of a Palmyrene woman in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology as her starting point. She interrogates the visual effects mediated by the status of these works as relief and illustrates that when Palmyrene portraits are viewed individually (as is so common today)\, their intended dynamic interactions are dramatically elided. Dr. Barham's lecture reinserts these portraits into an original tomb context to reconstruct the powerful visual effects they were designed to create when operating together as an ensemble. \n\nPalmyrene funerary sculptures emerge as participating in both the Graeco-Roman and the Parthian visual traditions\, but as ultimately achieving a highly distinctive and localized visual impact. Like the dead whom they commemorate and\, indeed\, like the medium of relief itself\, these objects occupy an in-between status\, at once concealing and revealing\, affectively engaging and emotionally withdrawn\, stridently individual and defined by group dynamics. The visual strategies of these reliefs are unique to the Syrian desert oasis of Palmyra.\n\n---------------\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursdays) lectures are monthly events where students and staff in M-U's Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology (IPCAA) share their latest research and report on ongoing excavations.\n\nIn keeping with other FAST lectures this year\, there will be no food or drink provided. We hope to return to the provision of plentiful food and drink in the fall.\n\nPhysical Attendance Location:\nClassics Library (2175 Angell Hall)\n\nVirtual Attendance Location:\nZoom Meeting ID: 975 2194 0803\nNo passcode needed

SUMMARY:Performance:Flights of Fancy
DESCRIPTION:This performance features the choreography and performance work of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance seniors as they near completion of their degree. ElleAnna Casterline\, Olivia Johnson\, Tal Kamin\, Sarah Madnick\, Abby Niemi and Arianna Stadler will each present a solo and a group dance\, featuring additional dance majors.\n\nElleAnna Casterline’s group and solo dances portray the dichotomy between vulnerability and isolation through the empowerment of the internal self and the deception of the external. This work curates collaborations between screen dance\, music production\, and performance\, demonstrating the multifaceted experience of mental and emotional awareness after loss.\n\nLydia Dunn’s group explores the state of daydreaming\; elegant choreography pairs with an airy and uplifting setting that is beyond reality. Dunn’s solo\, In The Cold Light of Day\, feels intimately personal as a quieter\, darker setting accompanies movement created out of a practice of introspection and finding new approaches.\n\nOlivia Johnson showcases how addiction creates tension in a family and thrives through fakery in A Scoop of Neapolitan. Her interactive and interdisciplinary solo\, Inevitable but Voluntary\, dives into the belief that in a broad sense of life\, fate and free will work together to create reality.\n\nSarah Madnick’s solo evokes the empty stress of her quaint hometown as a place to find quiet space to unpack the unavoidable and overwhelming emotional pile-up of everyday life. Madnick's group explores the rollercoaster of feeling misplaced and the complicated dynamics of returning to your childhood home after you no longer live there.\n\nWhile experimenting with jazz-funk and sensual choreography\, Abby Niemi and her dancers spread messages of self-worth\, positivity\, and affirmations through songs by Anderson .Paak and Rihanna.\n\nIn her group work\, Arianna Stadler explores the naivety of young love and the excitement of possibility while juxtaposing this with a mature disillusioned relationship. Stadler investigates the lengths to which grief and extreme misery can be expressed through satire in her solo.\n\nThe Friday night concert will be available for livestreamed at https://myumi.ch/DanceWatch
