How do we find a safe place, protected from bad weather and circumstance, in an era of floods, fires,violence, abuse and pandemics? \r\n\r\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds, private and public. \r\n\r\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a \u201claboratory,\u201d or open studio, where visitors can see the artist\u2019s creative process as the installation evolves, and the rooms change, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects, bright colors, light, video, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed, while at the same time, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \r\n\r\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings\u2026\u201da room of one\u2019s own\u201d reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home, safety, and dreams. \r\n\r\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\r\n\r\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging, or where we come from, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist, beyond structures and times of remoteness. There are the usual anthropomorphic depictions of the river as a capricious woman, bountiful and destructive in turn, but also much in the way of descriptions of the waxing and waning depth of the river, the flow patterns, the color of the water, the dissolved matter in it, the taste of it, and the fishes and other marine life. Each is a chronotope in the literary sense of configuring time, space, and subjectivity in particular ways, but also a ticker of time in the sense of marking the objective state of the river at a particular moment. But again, the anthropomorphic inflections of our language break through with the ticker indicating the beating heart of the river, the river oft described has having a wavering and flickering heart. I examine these tensions between poetic figurations and objective descriptions of the river in the novel, following them across the filmic register to two art films based on the novel, Jago Hua Severa (The Dawn will Break, 1959) and Padma Nodir Majhi (1993) and finally across the scientific register to current studies of the river, with its focus on fluvial channel dynamics, metal content in the river and declining state of fish species. I explore how anthropology inherits this tension with its encounters not just with people but with texts and media by and about them and what anthropology does or can do with this tension to realize genomics, statistical genetics, gene networks, microbial pathogenesis\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nEvolutionarily conserved signal transduction pathways, such as Ras-cAMP-PKA, calcineurin, and TOR signaling, are primary regulators of stress responses and morphogenetic processes across the fungal tree of life. From an evolutionary perspective, these pathways are expected to be under relatively strong stabilizing selection, as loss-of-function mutations (LoF) in these pathways typically lead to reduced growth rates and increased sensitivity to environmental stresses. We have carried out comparative population genomic analyses of signaling pathway LoF alleles for multiple fungal species, and find that several pathways exhibit unusually high frequencies of naturally occurring putative LoF alleles. He was a columnist for the leading business daily Vedomosti, and later deputy editor-in-chief at Kommersant daily, another leading Russian newspaper.\r\n\r\nSince 2007, Rogov has held positions at the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy, the leading Russian think-tank in economics, and at the Academy for the National Economy and Public Policy. In 2011, he was an academic secretary and a member of the editorial committee of the working group on economic growth that formulated the Government Strategy Until 2020. Jawad Sukhanyar will discuss issues like human rights, absence of press freedom and democratic institutions. How are the Taliban ruling the country? Trying to introduce their variant of Islam called Taliban-ism, resorting to religious nationalism and more.\r\n \r\nJawad Sukhanyar worked as a journalist for major news agencies in Afghanistan, where he reported for *The New York Times* for eight years. He was also a freelance journalist and wrote analytical pieces for various outlets, including the *Eurasia Review*. In early 2020 he served as a media adviser in the office of the first vice president of Afghanistan. Jawad came to the university in September 2018 as a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow, studying issues related to women's rights in Afghanistan. With the support of Wallace House, he returned to Ann Arbor last October after fleeing the Taliban with his family. He is now a journalist-in-residence with the Donia Human Rights Center and the International Institute studying the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Afghan peace process, and the fate of press freedom. He's examining how the U.S. mission in Afghanistan ended in chaos and humiliation, what could have been done differently and how the Afghan peace process led to a dead-end after the Taliban took over the country and formed an interim government. The consequences of U.S. departure have been dire, resulting in the mass starvation of millions of Afghans inside the country, women being denied their rights to education, and press freedom crumbling.
