SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Meeting:Mateus De Freitas Virgilio Pereira Oral Defense | Constrained Control for Load Alleviation in Very Flexible Aircraft
DESCRIPTION:Mateus De Freitas Virgilio Pereira (of Professor Cesnik and Professor Kolmanovsky groups) is defending his dissertation\, \"Constrained Control for Load Alleviation in Very Flexible Aircraft\,\" on April 19th at 8:00 a.m. in person and via Zoom.\n\nAbout the Defense\nMotivated by the need for a greener aviation industry\, aircraft designs are evolving toward higher aspect ratio wings to improve aerodynamic performance and reduce fuel consumption. Consequently\, these vehicles are becoming increasingly flexible\, thus more vulnerable to structural failure\, especially when performing maneuvers or during encounters with gusts.\n\nIn this work\, constrained control methods are investigated to design maneuver and gust load alleviation systems to keep the loads on these very flexible aircraft within safety limits. Two control architectures based on Model Predictive Control are proposed. Load alleviation is achieved by performing shape control of the flexible structure by imposing curvature constraints on critical stations on the wing and tail. For gust load alleviation\, feedforward control is applied based on disturbance preview provided by LIDAR measurements. The control design for these large-scale systems is tackled by using model order reduction techniques and strategies to reduce the computational cost. In particular\, it is shown that constraint aggregation methods can provide significant reductions in the computational footprint of Model Predictive Control.\n\nThe proposed load alleviation system is tested in a wind tunnel experiment. A half-aircraft model with a very flexible wing and free pitch is used to assess the performance of the controller in enforcing constraints on the vehicle while performing a longitudinal maneuver. Experimental results are presented to showcase the potential of the proposed system in addressing multiple objectives in load alleviation and its successful implementation in real time.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Deploying Reliable Data Infrastructure at Yelp\n\nMaintaining data infrastructure at scale requires technologies that eventually need to be improved and/or upgraded at some point in time. This can be due to new version releases of open-source or licensed software\, and compatibility/security considerations. When these situations arise\, it’s necessary to address them through the following processes: roll-out\, testing\, and validation. This encompasses acceptance\, integration\, and unit teststo verify the interaction at different levels of code for the service being added or changed\, as well as validating systems on individual hosts that would be impacted and non-production environments for further validation. It’s especially important because the consequences of not taking these steps can cause an outage of access for users or developers\, or resultin possible data loss. This discussion will go over best practices and lessons learned about planning roll-out and testing plans and their considerations\, in addition to monitoring active deployments and responding to the unexpected in these scenarios.\n\n\nSpeaker: Alexander Martinez\n\nAlexander joined Yelp’s Data Infrastructure Organization two and a half yearsago originally as a member of the stream processing team\, and later became a member of the DRE-SQL team in July 2020. During his time at Yelp\, Alexander has been both a project lead and member on various initiatives including: upgrading a MySQL major version\, deploying and integrating Vitess\, and creating automation and monitoring for various related technologies. Prior to Yelp\, he studied mathematics at the University of British Columbia and worked on researching and developing computer vision and machinelearning infrastructure while working at a startup in Vancouver\, BC. When he’s not behind a monitor\, Alexander can be found exploring as much of New York City as possible since his recent move to the city in October 2021.\n\nModerator: Trishia Ramos\n\nTrishia has been a technical recruiting coordinator on Yelp's Tech Talent team for the past 10 months. Prior to joining the tech field\, she worked in healthcare while finishing her degree in Psychology and Human Resource Management. Trishia finds excitement in meeting new people and learning about their experiences. She is committed to creating meaningful spaces for others to have their voices heard. \n\n\n\nAbout Yelping From Home:\n\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering and product teams.\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together. \nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborateand share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelp employees from engineering and product share their stories about career development\, technical skills and workplace challenges in a well-distributed environment.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Dreams and Memories in the Making of the Ivens Documentary A Tale of the Wind
DESCRIPTION:This talk uses the Dutch documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens’ (1898-1989) \"love letter to China\,\" his 1988 film Une Histoire de vent (A Tale of the Wind) as a case study to explore the profound connection between fiction and documentary\, between biography and history\, and between private life and collective experience. Ivens’ use of dream sequences\, personal memories\, and characters from Chinese legend\, fiction\, and film in his last documentary film shot on location in China\, speak volumes about the importance of the twin foci of dream and the everyday in forging social documentaries through fictional representations.\n\nZoom webinar registration at: https://myumi.ch/RWQ3W\n \n Liang Luo is a professor of Chinese studies at the University of Kentucky and a distinguished visiting professor at Tianjin Normal University. She is the author of \"The Global White Snake\" (Michigan 2021) and \"The Avant-Garde and the Popular in Modern China\" (Michigan 2014). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Book Talk. *The Revolutionary City: Urbanization and the Global Transformation of Rebellion*
DESCRIPTION:Examining the changing character of revolution around the world\, *The Revolutionary City* focuses on the impact that the concentration of people\, power\, and wealth in cities exercises on revolutionary processes and outcomes. Once predominantly an urban and armed affair\, revolutions in the twentieth century migrated to the countryside\, as revolutionaries searched for safety from government repression and discovered the peasantry as a revolutionary force. But at the end of the twentieth century\, as urban centers grew\, revolution returned to the city—accompanied by a new urban civic repertoire espousing the containment of predatory government and relying on visibility and the power of numbers rather than arms.\n \nUsing original data on revolutionary episodes since 1900\, public opinion surveys\, and engaging examples from around the world\, Mark Beissinger explores the causes and consequences of the urbanization of revolution in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Beissinger examines the compact nature of urban revolutions\, as well as their rampant information problems and heightened uncertainty. He investigates the struggle for control over public space\, why revolutionary contention has grown more pacified over time\, and how revolutions involving the rapid assembly of hundreds of thousands in central urban spaces lead to diverse\, ad hoc coalitions that have difficulty producing substantive change. *The Revolutionary City* provides a new understanding of how revolutions happen and what they might look like in the future.\n \nMark R. Beissinger is Henry W. Putnam Professor in the Department of Politics at Princeton. He previously served on the faculties of University of Wisconsin-Madison and Harvard. His main fields of interest are social movements\, revolutions\, nationalism\, state-building\, and imperialism\, with particular reference to the former Soviet Union\, Russia\, and the post-Soviet states. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters\, Beissinger is author or editor of six books—most recently\, *Historical Legacies of Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe* (2014)\, and The *Revolutionary City: Urbanization and the Global Transformation of Rebellion* (2022). His book *Nationalist Mobilization and the Collapse of the Soviet State* (2002) won multiple awards—among them\, the American Political Science Association’s award for the best book published in the United States on government\, politics\, or international affairs.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. SUMMARY:Presentation:Webinar: Refining Techniques for High-Frequency Monitoring of Chlorophyll
DESCRIPTION:Many estuaries across the country experience nutrient pollution and algal blooms\, which degrade water quality for people and other aquatic life. Carefully tracking chlorophyll ɑ concentrations - a proxy for phytoplankton biomass - can help managers track the patterns and drivers of algal blooms and eutrophication in estuaries but\, to date\, technological barriers have limited monitoring to monthly measurements\, which may not be enough to track plankton dynamics that fluctuate hourly.\n\nLast year\, a catalyst project enabled 13 reserves nationwide to develop\, test and share standardized protocols for using new YSI EXO Total Algae fluorometric sensors mounted on existing monitoring stations. In this webinar\, team members will share how they: 1) assessed the performance of the new sensors\; 2) identified sources of sensor interference and developed correction equations\; and 3) created and shared tested protocols and recommendations for the Reserve System.
