How do we find a safe place, protected from bad weather and circumstance, in an era of floods, fires,violence, abuse and pandemics? \r\n\r\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds, private and public. \r\n\r\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a \u201claboratory,\u201d or open studio, where visitors can see the artist\u2019s creative process as the installation evolves, and the rooms change, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects, bright colors, light, video, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed, while at the same time, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \r\n\r\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings\u2026\u201da room of one\u2019s own\u201d reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home, safety, and dreams. \r\n\r\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\r\n\r\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging, or where we come from, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \r\n\r\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities, racial biases, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \r\n\r\n \u201cThe ongoing lack of affordable health care, systematic racism, class division, economic downturn, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues\u2026,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.\u201d\r\n\r\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\r\n\r\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Findings that will center this presentation emerged from a larger qualitative study that sought to understand how the political climate encouraged Black students to apply and attend HBCUs. In alignment with the inductive approach of qualitative research, one of the themes that emerged from this study underscored how the HBCU environment facilitated Black students learning about the diversity within the Black community. Conversely, findings also indicated how differences among Black students on HBCU campuses led to exclusion, isolation, and cultural alienation for some students. This presentation will conclude with implications for practice and research for HBCUs and possibly MSIs in general.\nSpeaker Bio\nRobert T. Palmer is chair and professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the School of Education at Howard University. He is also a faculty affiliate for the Center of Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) at Rutgers University. His research examines issues of access, equity, retention, persistence, and the college experience of racial and ethnic minorities, particularly within the context of historically Black colleges and universities. Palmer\u2019s work has been published in leading journals in higher education, such as The Journal of College Student Development, Teachers College Record, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Journal of Negro Education, College Student Affairs Journal, Journal of College Student Retention, The Negro Educational Review, and Journal of Black Studies, among others. Since earning his Ph.D. in 2007, Palmer has authored\/co-authored well over 150 academic publications. For those stuck in the no man\u2019s land between war and peace in the Ottoman Empire, World War I did not end with the signing of the 1918 armistices or the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. It continued beyond the signing of the 1923 Lausanne Treaty and produced the world\u2019s largest refugee crisis to date while leaving a legacy of political instability that continues to plague the region. Deep maps \u2013 rendered using ARC- GIS technology and data from official documents, institutional records, and diaries of aid workers, refugees, and other non-combatants \u2013 reveal how refugee routes and war relief infrastructure reconfigured the landscape. The refugee experience of those fleeing genocide took form in the desert, the camp, and on the road during a protracted and seemingly unending war that had important consequences for minorities in the postwar Middle East.\r\n \r\n Michelle Tusan is Professor of History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her publications include \u201cThe British Empire and the Armenian Genocide\u201d (2017\/2019), \u201cSmyrna\u2019s Ashes: Humanitarianism, Genocide and the Birth of the Middle East\u201d (2012), and articles in the American Historical Review and Past and Present. A forthcoming piece in the Journal of Modern History, \u201cFrom Concentration Camp to Site of Refuge,\u201d traces the significance of the camp in the refugee experience during WWI.
