DESCRIPTION:Splendors of the religious and artistic endeavors of Byzantine manuscript makers are on display in this exhibit of highlights from the Greek manuscript collection at the University of Michigan Library Special Collections Research Center. The collection — 110 codices (bound manuscripts) and fragments written in Greek from the fourth to the nineteenth centuries C.E. — is the largest such collection in the Western Hemisphere and provides unique insights into this era of achievement in textual transmission\, calligraphy\, illumination\, and bookbinding. The exhibit will be open during Audubon Room hours.\n\nA digital version of the exhibit will be available in the Audubon Room and online\, and allows visitors to explore other pages of the manuscripts on display and other manuscripts from the collection.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates two recent publications based on the collection: \n\n* Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. DESCRIPTION:The second event in the COVID-19 reflections series will feature Cameron Webb\, senior policy advisor for COVID-19 equity on the White House COVID-19 Response Team\, in conversation with Luke Shaefer\, faculty director of Poverty Solutions at U-M. Together\, they will reflect on the two-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic and will discuss the national response and strategies used to address and mitigate racial disparities.\n\nThe Center for Racial Justice is partnering with Poverty Solutions and the National Center for Institutional Diversity to co-host a virtual event series that reflects on the local and state-level policies that have been instrumental in responding to the racialized health and economic disparities stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The series brings together a diverse group of changemakers\, including national and local policymakers\, journalists\, researchers\, and community leaders\, to (1) meditate on the past and current racial dynamics of COVID-19 in Michigan and Detroit\, and to (2) discuss the policies\, programs\, and practices that have successfully responded to the needs of communities of color disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.\n\nThe first event was April 1\, and the series will end with an event on June 10.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preference Intensity: Some Implications for American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Talk Abstract: Political scientists have long been interested in understanding the intensity of voter preferences\, but this endeavor has rarely been incorporated into the study of representation and disagreements over measurement remain. I measure intensity of preferences using a simple extension of conjoint analysis. I provide some evidence of the face validity of this measurement approach. This strategy requires large samples\, so I use the approximately 500\,000 cases from Nationscape. I show that simple survey marginals do not show large biases when it comes to the balance of intensity in the general population. However there are large differences in intensity across issues. Conservatives care much more about the issues on which they hold conservative views\, and liberals care much more about the issues on which they hold liberal views. This may amplify polarization and affect the outcomes of primary elections. People with moderate views care more about the issues on which their views match the reigning consensus. This contradicts work that argues that moderate views are less deeply held\, and supports the argument that moderate stances are beneficial in general elections.

DESCRIPTION:A live presentation on what to find in the sky tonight and for the coming few weeks. This presentation includes how to find the cardinal directions on your own by finding the north star\, current and upcoming constellations\, visible planets\, a few deep sky objects depending on the season\, and other interesting astronomical visualizations. \n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and deep into the ocean from the comfort of reclining seats. Tickets $8. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the Museum Store.\nThe planetarium is operating at reduced capacity to maximize distancing between viewers and masks are required.

DESCRIPTION:The four display cases in this exhibit were curated by members of a combined undergraduate and graduate course on disability history and literature at the University of Michigan to convey what it was like to be disabled in the United States before the modern category of “disability” existed. Together\, the artifacts gathered from the Clements Library collections provide a glimpse of the cruelties\, triumphs\, and intimate acts of care that shaped the lives of people with disabilities in the past. \n \nThe Clements Library is offering Open Hours Monday through Friday\, from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm.
