Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan Library: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Splendors of the religious and artistic endeavors of Byzantine manuscript makers are on display in this exhibit of highlights from the Greek manuscript collection at the University of Michigan Library Special Collections Research Center. The collection — 110 codices (bound manuscripts) and fragments written in Greek from the fourth to the nineteenth centuries C.E. — is the largest such collection in the Western Hemisphere and provides unique insights into this era of achievement in textual transmission\, calligraphy\, illumination\, and bookbinding. The exhibit will be open during Audubon Room hours.\n\nA digital version of the exhibit will be available in the Audubon Room and online\, and allows visitors to explore other pages of the manuscripts on display and other manuscripts from the collection.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates two recent publications based on the collection: \n\n* Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Romare Bearden: Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:Discover the lost decade of a culturally important artist.\n \nBetween 1952 and 1964\, Romare Bearden created a large body of abstract watercolors\, oil paintings\, and collages. Exhibited with success at the time of their execution\, these artworks are little known today. Nonetheless\, they directly inform the collages for which Bearden is now best known.\n \nThis exhibition provides a chronology and context for the period during which he produced his abstractions\, filling in missing information and bookending this decade of work. The beginning of this show includes examples of the artist’s figural abstract watercolors from the 1940s\, as well as some of his earliest abstract works in watercolor and collage from the 1950s. From there\, the show moves on to explore Bearden’s large-scale and miniature abstractions\, as well as examples of his later work from the mid-1960s. Altogether\, Romare Bearden: Abstraction tells the story of a historically neglected but extraordinary and critically important aspect of his body of work.\n\nRomare Bearden: Abstraction is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Neuberger Museum of Art of Purchase College\, State University of New York. The exhibition is curated by Tracy Fitzpatrick\, Director\, Neuberger Museum of Art. The presentation at the University of Michigan Museum of Art is coordinated by Ozi Uduma\, Assistant Curator of Global Contemporary Art.\n\nThe national tour of Romare Bearden: Abstraction is sponsored by Morgan Stanley.\n\nLead support for UMMA’s presentation is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Ross School of Business. DESCRIPTION:Big Astronomy focuses on three of Earth’s largest observatories in Chile’s rugged Andes Mountains and arid Atacama Desert. By avoiding clouds and light pollution\, mountain tops and dry deserts are ideal locations for Earth bound telescopes. Big Astronomy features the perspectives of not only astronomers\, but also the engineers\, technicians\, and support staff needed to keep these massive pieces of equipment running. Includes an abbreviated star talk.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and deep into the ocean from the comfort of reclining seats.
