SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Gallery Summer Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The exhibit is on display for public viewing weekdays from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. through August 18\, 2022\, in the main lobby of Lane Hall\, located at 204 South State Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:To treat and when to treat? The role of sequential decision making and mobile technologies in health disorder research
DESCRIPTION:ISR Insights Speaker Series\n\"To treat and when to treat? The role of sequential decision making and mobile technologies in health disorder research\" \nWalter Dempsey (Research Assistant Professor\, Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision-making Center (d3c))\nThursday\, May 19 at noon ET\nZoom link to come\n\nAbstract:\nThe development of smartphone and wearable sensors has led to an unprecedented opportunity to leverage these technologies to facilitate healthy behavior change. Push notifications delivered at the right time may have a huge impact\; however\, too many notifications may irritate and even exacerbate the situation. A critical question we face is \"How do we design treatment plans that leverage mobile technologies for individuals struggling with a variety of health disorders?\" In this presentation\, Walter Dempsey will discuss these types of treatment designs\, known as just-in-time adaptive interventions\, which are protocolized by a sequence of decision rules that specify whether and how to intervene depending on the person’s changing needs. He will discuss recent work by the Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision-making Center (d3c) in experimental designs and associated data analytic tools to answer questions about adaptive interventions and directions of future research.\n\nThis webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation\, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Analysis of Complex Sample Survey Data - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Analysis of Complex Sample Survey Data\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:00pm\nM/W/F\n\nThis course provides practical methods and tools to analyze complex survey data with a hands-on introduction to the use of specialized statistical software procedures. The course focuses on case studies with specific large-scale national surveys: the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R)\, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES)\, and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Relevant design features of the NCS-R\, NHANES and HRS include survey weights that take into account differences in probability of selection into the sample and differences in response rates\, as well as stratification and clustering in the multistage sampling procedures used in identifying the sampled households and individuals. After introducing essential concepts related to complex sample designs\, the course will turn to the construction of survey weights\, estimation of sampling variance\, descriptive analysis\, regression analysis\, and finally special topics in the analysis of survey data. Participants can expect to work on homework exercises\, computer lab exercises\, and a final analysis project.\n\nWhy take this course? \n- To gain an understanding of modern methods and software for the secondary analysis of survey data collected from large complex samples\n- To have the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the instructors when walking through analyses of survey data\n- To see various examples of applied statistical analyses of survey data\n- To have the experience of writing a scientific paper that presents an analysis of complex sample survey data\, and getting expert feedback on that paper.\n\nCourse Hours: 3\n\nInstructors: Brady T. West\, Yajuan Si\n\nPrerequisite: Two graduate-level courses in statistical methods\, familiarity with basic sample design concepts\, and familiarity with data analytic techniques such as linear and logistic regression.\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Modeling Data that Lie on a Simplex
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nExamples of data that lie in a simplex abound in a variety of fields\, such as biology\, geology\, and sociology. However\, it can be challenging to model this type of data\, particularly because each observation must sum up to one. If not handled correctly\, this might induce what Karl Pearson called \"spurious correlation\". As a trivial example of this\, take an observation that has two values and sums up to one. Then\, the values must be negatively correlated with each other. While traditional approaches for this type of data involve analyzing the log ratio transforms\, this might be problematic if any of the observations have a zero as one of their values or for interpretation.\n\nAdditional challenges arise if this data changes over time. The first two chapters lay the framework for how such data may be modeled. The first chapter proposes doing so using a general affine transformation for the overall change and a sufficiently rich error model for the difference between the overall transformation and the observation at the next time point. Of the three models explored\, the Rotational Geodesic Error model is most promising. However\, it might not be appropriate to assume that the direction observations moved in is uniformly distributed. Using ideas from directional statistics\, we discuss in the second chapter how to model directions that appear to be similar for observations with similar values. In both chapters\, we run simulation studies and analyze the income proportions from Los Angeles County. In each case\, our analysis is able to discover trends consistent with larger macroeconomic ones and provide further details about these trends.\n\nThe last chapter discusses tree based mixtures of probability simplices. In other words\, the simplices share vertices in a way that can be represented by a tree with the root node corresponding to a vertex shared by all simplices and the leaf nodes corresponding to vertices present in one simplex. We show when such models have posterior consistency and demonstrate how to efficiently fit them using geometric methods. Indeed\, we apply them to analyze a subset of articles from the New York Times\, uncovering meaningful topics and interesting semantic relationships between these topics. While we leave it to future work\, these methods might also be combined with the ones from previous chapters to model how sub-regions of data that lie in a simplex change over time.

SUMMARY:Performance:Waipuna
DESCRIPTION:The Hawaiian word “waipuna” translates as “spring water\,” an essential resource for supporting life\, the very definition of wealth. Just like the refreshing spring water that continually bubbles forth from the ground\, the Hawaiian music group Waipuna\, which burst upon the music scene in 2008\, has sustained a steady pulse of creative energy. With dramatic musical arrangements and progressive instrumentation\, Waipunaʻs one-of-a-kind sound combines the traditional teachings of their mentors and expands the boundaries and expectations of todayʻs Hawaiian music. The group consists of founding members Kale Hannahs and Matt Sproat\, as well as David Kamakahi\, who joined the group in 2011. The eclectic collaboration of these three uniquely talented individuals allows the group to successfully cross over between (as well as combine) various genres of music with ease. Waipunaʻs music has been widely appreciated and enjoyed not only by the people of Hawaiʻi\, but also a wide spectrum of audiences around the world. They have provided inspirational accompaniment for hula dancers\, touched hearts through their poetry and earned seven Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards (Hawaiʻiʻs version of the Grammy Awards) for their first four albums. “A kahe mau ka wai ola o ke ao nei…” – And thus\, the living water flows on.\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry.
