DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Questionnaire Design\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJuly 18-21\, 2022\n8:30am - 12:00pm EST\nM/T/W/Th\n\nParticipants should have prior knowledge of question design before attending.\n\nThis course is designed to follow on from Introduction to Questionnaire Design. Now instead of looking at question comprehension from a cognitive side\, the linguistic side will be explored including online tools. Factual questions will be revisited but with the goal of exploring different types of respondent memory problems and their solutions\, while also covering time anomalies in surveys and quasi facts. Subjective questions will be revisited to understand attitude consistency and inconsistency\, to look at the feasibility of changing attitudes to change behavioral intentions to change behaviors and to cover the popular topic of satisfaction and other customer experience metrics. Alternatives to questionnaires will also be covered such as event history calendars\, internet enabled devices\, factorial surveys and multi-item scales. The course concludes with ways to translate survey questions and evaluate the translation. The course will be interactive with the goal of making it as close to in-person training as possible. There also will be workshops throughout. DESCRIPTION:BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!\n\nEvery day at the University of Michigan\, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development\, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us\, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research\, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny\, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.\n\nThe goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences\, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.\n\nThroughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

DESCRIPTION:Methods of Survey Sampling\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:30pm EST\nT/Th\n\nA fundamental feature of many sample surveys is a probability sample of subjects. Probability sampling requires rigorous application of mathematical principles to the selection process. Methods of Survey Sampling is a moderately advanced course in applied statistics\, with an emphasis on the practical problems of sample design\, which provides students with an understanding of principles and practice in skills required to select subjects and analyze sample data. Topics covered include stratified\, clustered\, systematic\, and multi-stage sample designs\, unequal probabilities and probabilities proportional to size\, area probability sampling\, ratio means\, sampling errors\, frame problems\, cost factors\, and practical designs and procedures. Emphasis is on practical considerations rather than on theoretical derivations\, although understanding of principles requires review of statistical results for sample surveys. DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based artist\, musician\, and educator Mother Cyborg (Diana J. Nucera) debuts a series of quilts that references our relationship to digital technologies\, data-mining and security in the age of the Internet. Using bright colors\, geometric shapes and patterns\, Crafting our Digital Legacy  opens up analogue and tactile spaces that invite audiences to reflect upon our collective relationship with internet technologies\, identity\, legacy\, and the future. Mother Cyborg draws from over 15 years experience as a community organizer in Detroit\, MI where individuals gained access and agency to (re-)build their neighborhoods\, and run their own Internet service providers. In this exhibition\, Nucera expands her artist self through fiber works where she addresses critical issues of surveillance\, data collection\, the redaction of love to likes\, and the complexity of identity within it all. \nMother Cyborg states\, “This work aims to return a sense of wonder and magic to all of us\, and rekindle the awe we may have first felt when using a geolocating star map\, or being able to video call a person across borders. Crafting our Digital Legacy  looks at the way in which art can unpack how living at the whim of invisible wifi connections\, engaging ‘power cycling’ (turning on and off) computers and phones to ‘fix’ them\, modern experiences of technology run the gamut from resigned faith to proselytizing zealotry. In our weariness of the state of technology\, we fail to notice that the ‘same’ data\, taken from all of us\, has the power to rewrite and mutate the prior century’s worst inequalities into a blueprint for the future. For me the creation of my art\, be it painting\, drawing or printmaking\, integrates my life experiences\, my beliefs and my heritage. I hope that my viewers will also bring their own lenses created by their identity\, their family history and their experiences.” \n- Ruth Weisberg\nRuth Weisberg: Of Memory\, Time &amp\; Place brings together over 25 works that span six decades of the artist’s practice as a painter and printmaker. It features iconic works from Weisberg’s artistic career - Waterborne (1973)\, A Year Passes (1985) and Questioning Veronese (2011) - where she explored the interconnectedness and continuity of successive generations. Anchored in themes of personal and familial memory\; ancestral knowledge embedded in her Jewish heritage\, and admiration for Western art history\, her unframed canvases\, and works on paper create liminal spaces that collapse the time and space\, where family\, friends from the present and past share space with great painters and Holocaust survivors and those who perished. The Shtetl\, A Journey and Memorial\, a limited- edition artist book that she wrote and illustrated comprising 9 intaglio prints in 1971\, lies at the heart of the exhibition. In it she paid homage to the small Jewish towns in Poland (where her ancestors are from) before the Holocaust. This significant work was a touchstone for her artistic and professional career as it propelled her move from Michigan to Los Angeles in 1969.\n \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, Weisberg moved to Ann Arbor to pursue her higher studies\, she completed her B.Ed (1964)\, after spending three years in Perugia\, Italy where she earned a Laurea di Belle Arti in 1962\, and MFA (1965). Since her arrival in Los Angeles\, Weisberg has been a formidable influence and mentor to decades of artists as an artist\, Professor of Fine Arts and former Dean at the University of Southern California Roski School of Art and Design. Weisberg was the Director of the USC Initiative for Israeli Arts and Humanities\, and the founder of the Jewish Artists Initiative of Southern California. Her first major survey in Los Angeles was in 1979 at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. She and Judy Chicago were the first two artists exhibited at The Women’s Building\, Los Angeles. Their solo exhibitions inaugurated that venue. Weisberg has had more than 80 solo exhibitions and nearly 200 group exhibitions internationally\, including a major exhibition at the Norton Simon Museum\, Pasadena and a retrospective\, at the Skirball Museum\, Los Angeles as well as a solo exhibition at the Huntington in San Marino. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards\, some notable ones are the Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphic Council International in 2015 and the Foundation for Jewish Culture’s 50th Anniversary Cultural Achievement Award in 2011. She has been the recipient of the Art Leadership Award\, National Council of Art Administrators and the Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award\, 2009. DESCRIPTION:Designing physical structures and devices to achieve desirable performance is an important study in many disciplines\, including physics and engineering. However\, the design process is non-trivial because of the large design spaces as well as the non-unique optimal design. Usually\, the design process requires an iterative trial-and-error process conducted by human experts through extensive simulations or experiments\, which wastes much time and effort. The recent development of computer science has reshaped this research domain. In this talk\, I will give a brief overview of these design methods\, with a special focus on designing optical and photonic structures and devices. In this talk\, I will briefly discuss three parts: 1) Traditional optimization methods\; 2) Deep learning methods that use the neural networks as function approximators to speed up the evaluations and guide for optimization\; 3) Reinforcement learning methods that can efficiently extrapolate in the design space and provide new design thoughts. One specific example will be discussed in each part.

DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Big Data and Machine Learning for Survey Researchers and Social Scientists\n\nCourse open for registration!\nOpen to all!\n\nJuly 20-22\, 2022\n1:00pm – 5:00pm\nM/Th/F\n\nThe amount of data generated as a by-product in society is growing fast including data from satellites\, sensors\, transactions\, social media and smartphones\, just to name a few. Such data are often referred to as “big data”\, and can be used to create value in different areas such as health and crime prevention\, commerce and fraud detection.  An emerging practice in many areas is to append or link big data sources with more specific and smaller scale sources that often contain much more limited information.  This practice has been used for some time by survey researchers in constructing frames by appending auxiliary information that is often not directly available on the frame\, but can be obtained from an external source.   Using Big Data has the potential to go beyond the sampling phase for survey researchers and in fact has the potential to influence the social sciences in general.  Big Data is of interest for public opinion researchers and agencies that produce statistics to find alternative data sources either to reduce costs\, to improve estimates or to produce estimates in a more timely fashion. However\, Big Data pose several interesting and new challenges to survey researchers and social scientists among others who want to extract information from data. As Robert Groves (2012) pointedly commented\, the era is “appropriately called Big Data and not Big Information”\, because there is a lot of work for analysts before information can be gained from “auxiliary traces of some process that is going on in society.”\n\nThis course offers participants a broad overview of big data sources\, opportunities and examples motivated within the survey and social science contexts including the use of social media data\, para data and other such sources.  This course also offers a detailed\, practical introduction to four common machine learning methods that can be applied to big and small data alike at various aspects of a study’s lifecycle from design to nonresponse adjustments to propensity score matching to weighting and evaluation and analysis.  The machine learning methods will be demonstrated in R and we will provide several different examples of using these methods along with multiple packages in R that offer these methods.\n\nNot for academic credit\n\nInstructor: Trent Buskirk\n\nAll 2022 courses will be held in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Certifiable Autonomous Systems Through Online Verification — CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Engineers and computer scientists are currently developing autonomous systems whose entire set of behaviors in future\, untested situations is unknown. For instance\, how can a designer foresee all situations that an autonomous vehicle will face? Keeping in mind that many autonomous systems are safety-critical or operation-critical\, it is irresponsible to deploy such systems without testing all possible situations---this\, however\, seems impossible since even the most important possible situations are often unmanageably many. This presentation proposes a paradigm shift that will make it possible to guarantee safety in unforeseeable situations (under mild model assumptions): Instead of verifying the correctness of a system before deployment\, we propose online verification\, a new verification paradigm where a system continuously checks the correctness of its next action by itself in its current environment (and only in it) in a just-in-time manner. The usefulness of this method will be demonstrated primarily for autonomous driving and robotics.\n\n---\n\nAbout the speaker: Matthias Althoff received a diploma in Mechatronics and Information Technology from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich\, Germany\, in 2005. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing./Univ. Tokio Martin Buss in 2010. From 2010 - 2012 he was a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University\, USA\, with a joint appointment in electrical engineering and the Robotics Institute. He joined the Computer Science Department at Ilmenau University of Technology\, Germany\, in 2012 as Assistant Professor for Automation Systems. Since 2013 Matthias Althoff is a Professor in Computer Science at the Technical University of Munich. \n\nHis research interests include the design and analysis of cyber-physical systems\, formal verification of continuous and hybrid systems\, reachability analysis\, planning algorithms\, and robust and fault-tolerant control. The main applications of his research are automated vehicles\, robotics\, and power systems.

This film showcase first premiered at the Cine Las Americas Film Festival in Austin\, TX. This event is co-presented by One Day Films\, Recruitment\, Latinx Alliances\, and Regional Communicationsand Public Affairs.\n\nSensitivity Warning:\nThese films cover a wide range of student and educator experiences and perspectives\, and invite conversation about various topics including migration\, suicide\, dispossession\, and police violence\, which may be sensitive for some viewers. Overall\, the films celebrate resilience and the human spirit in adversity and in triumph.
