DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. DESCRIPTION:Analysis of Complex Sample Survey Data\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:00pm\nM/W/F\n\nThis course provides practical methods and tools to analyze complex survey data with a hands-on introduction to the use of specialized statistical software procedures. The course focuses on case studies with specific large-scale national surveys: the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R)\, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES)\, and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Relevant design features of the NCS-R\, NHANES and HRS include survey weights that take into account differences in probability of selection into the sample and differences in response rates\, as well as stratification and clustering in the multistage sampling procedures used in identifying the sampled households and individuals. After introducing essential concepts related to complex sample designs\, the course will turn to the construction of survey weights\, estimation of sampling variance\, descriptive analysis\, regression analysis\, and finally special topics in the analysis of survey data. Participants can expect to work on homework exercises\, computer lab exercises\, and a final analysis project.\n\nWhy take this course? \n- To gain an understanding of modern methods and software for the secondary analysis of survey data collected from large complex samples\n- To have the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the instructors when walking through analyses of survey data\n- To see various examples of applied statistical analyses of survey data\n- To have the experience of writing a scientific paper that presents an analysis of complex sample survey data\, and getting expert feedback on that paper.\n\nCourse Hours: 3\n\nInstructors: Brady T. DESCRIPTION:BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!\n\nEvery day at the University of Michigan\, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development\, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us\, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research\, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny\, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.\n\nThe goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences\, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.\n\nThroughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

DESCRIPTION:Open for registration!\n\nJuly 12 - 22\, 2022\n11:00am – 1:00pm EST\nT & F\n\nThe recent proliferation of mobile technology allows researchers to collect objective health and behavioral data at increased intervals\, in real time\, and may also reduce participant burden. In this course\, we will provide examples of the utility of and integration of wearables\, sensors\, and apps in research settings. Examples will include the use of wearable health devices to measure activity\, apps for ecological momentary assessment\, and smartphone sensors to measure sound and movement\, among others. Additionally\, this course will consider the integration of these new technologies into existing surveys and the quality of the data collected from the total survey error perspective. We will discuss considerations for assessing coverage\, participation\, and measurement error when integrating wearables\, sensors\, and apps in a research setting as well as the costs and privacy considerations when collecting these types of data. SUMMARY:Presentation:Interpretable and Scalable Graphical Models for Complex Spatio-temporal Processes
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This thesis focuses on data that has complex spatio-temporal structure and on probabilistic graphical models that learn the structure in an interpretable and scalable manner. We target two research areas of interest: Gaussian graphical models for tensor-variate data and summarization of complex time-varying texts using topic models. This work advances the state-of-the-art in several directions. First\, it introduces a new class of tensor-variate Gaussian graphical models via the Sylvester tensor equation. Second\, it develops an optimization technique based on a fast-converging proximal alternating linearized minimization method\, which scales tensor-variate Gaussian graphical model estimations to modern big-data settings. Third\, it connects Kronecker-structured (inverse) covariance models with spatio-temporal partial differential equations (PDEs) and introduces a new framework for ensemble Kalman filtering that is capable of tracking chaotic physical systems. Fourth\, it proposes a modular and interpretable framework for unsupervised and weakly-supervised probabilistic topic modeling of time-varying data that combines generative statistical models with computational geometric methods. Throughout\, practical applications of the methodology are considered using real datasets. This includes brain-connectivity analysis using EEG data\, space weather forecasting using solar imaging data\, longitudinal analysis of public opinions using Twitter data\, and mining of mental health related issues using TalkLife data. We show in each case that the graphical modeling framework introduced here leads to improved interpretability\, accuracy\, and scalability.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mother Cyborg: Crafting Our Digital Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based artist\, musician\, and educator Mother Cyborg (Diana J. Nucera) debuts a series of quilts that references our relationship to digital technologies\, data-mining and security in the age of the Internet. Using bright colors\, geometric shapes and patterns\, Crafting our Digital Legacy  opens up analogue and tactile spaces that invite audiences to reflect upon our collective relationship with internet technologies\, identity\, legacy\, and the future. Mother Cyborg draws from over 15 years experience as a community organizer in Detroit\, MI where individuals gained access and agency to (re-)build their neighborhoods\, and run their own Internet service providers. In this exhibition\, Nucera expands her artist self through fiber works where she addresses critical issues of surveillance\, data collection\, the redaction of love to likes\, and the complexity of identity within it all. \nMother Cyborg states\, “This work aims to return a sense of wonder and magic to all of us\, and rekindle the awe we may have first felt when using a geolocating star map\, or being able to video call a person across borders. Crafting our Digital Legacy  looks at the way in which art can unpack how living at the whim of invisible wifi connections\, engaging ‘power cycling’ (turning on and off) computers and phones to ‘fix’ them\, modern experiences of technology run the gamut from resigned faith to proselytizing zealotry. In our weariness of the state of technology\, we fail to notice that the ‘same’ data\, taken from all of us\, has the power to rewrite and mutate the prior century’s worst inequalities into a blueprint for the future. DESCRIPTION:“One thing that is very clear to me is that my life and my work are very intertwined. For me the creation of my art\, be it painting\, drawing or printmaking\, integrates my life experiences\, my beliefs and my heritage. I hope that my viewers will also bring their own lenses created by their identity\, their family history and their experiences.” \n- Ruth Weisberg\nRuth Weisberg: Of Memory\, Time &amp\; Place brings together over 25 works that span six decades of the artist’s practice as a painter and printmaker. It features iconic works from Weisberg’s artistic career - Waterborne (1973)\, A Year Passes (1985) and Questioning Veronese (2011) - where she explored the interconnectedness and continuity of successive generations. Anchored in themes of personal and familial memory\; ancestral knowledge embedded in her Jewish heritage\, and admiration for Western art history\, her unframed canvases\, and works on paper create liminal spaces that collapse the time and space\, where family\, friends from the present and past share space with great painters and Holocaust survivors and those who perished. The Shtetl\, A Journey and Memorial\, a limited- edition artist book that she wrote and illustrated comprising 9 intaglio prints in 1971\, lies at the heart of the exhibition. In it she paid homage to the small Jewish towns in Poland (where her ancestors are from) before the Holocaust. This significant work was a touchstone for her artistic and professional career as it propelled her move from Michigan to Los Angeles in 1969.\n \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, Weisberg moved to Ann Arbor to pursue her higher studies\, she completed her B.Ed (1964)\, after spending three years in Perugia\, Italy where she earned a Laurea di Belle Arti in 1962\, and MFA (1965). Since her arrival in Los Angeles\, Weisberg has been a formidable influence and mentor to decades of artists as an artist\, Professor of Fine Arts and former Dean at the University of Southern California Roski School of Art and Design. Weisberg was the Director of the USC Initiative for Israeli Arts and Humanities\, and the founder of the Jewish Artists Initiative of Southern California. Her first major survey in Los Angeles was in 1979 at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. She and Judy Chicago were the first two artists exhibited at The Women’s Building\, Los Angeles. Their solo exhibitions inaugurated that venue. Weisberg has had more than 80 solo exhibitions and nearly 200 group exhibitions internationally\, including a major exhibition at the Norton Simon Museum\, Pasadena and a retrospective\, at the Skirball Museum\, Los Angeles as well as a solo exhibition at the Huntington in San Marino. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards\, some notable ones are the Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphic Council International in 2015 and the Foundation for Jewish Culture’s 50th Anniversary Cultural Achievement Award in 2011. She has been the recipient of the Art Leadership Award\, National Council of Art Administrators and the Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award\, 2009. DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Big Data and Machine Learning for Survey Researchers and Social Scientists\n\nCourse open for registration!\nOpen to all!\n\nJuly 20-22\, 2022\n1:00pm – 5:00pm\nM/Th/F\n\nThe amount of data generated as a by-product in society is growing fast including data from satellites\, sensors\, transactions\, social media and smartphones\, just to name a few. Such data are often referred to as “big data”\, and can be used to create value in different areas such as health and crime prevention\, commerce and fraud detection.  An emerging practice in many areas is to append or link big data sources with more specific and smaller scale sources that often contain much more limited information.  This practice has been used for some time by survey researchers in constructing frames by appending auxiliary information that is often not directly available on the frame\, but can be obtained from an external source.   Using Big Data has the potential to go beyond the sampling phase for survey researchers and in fact has the potential to influence the social sciences in general.  Big Data is of interest for public opinion researchers and agencies that produce statistics to find alternative data sources either to reduce costs\, to improve estimates or to produce estimates in a more timely fashion. However\, Big Data pose several interesting and new challenges to survey researchers and social scientists among others who want to extract information from data. As Robert Groves (2012) pointedly commented\, the era is “appropriately called Big Data and not Big Information”\, because there is a lot of work for analysts before information can be gained from “auxiliary traces of some process that is going on in society.”\n\nThis course offers participants a broad overview of big data sources\, opportunities and examples motivated within the survey and social science contexts including the use of social media data\, para data and other such sources.  This course also offers a detailed\, practical introduction to four common machine learning methods that can be applied to big and small data alike at various aspects of a study’s lifecycle from design to nonresponse adjustments to propensity score matching to weighting and evaluation and analysis.  The machine learning methods will be demonstrated in R and we will provide several different examples of using these methods along with multiple packages in R that offer these methods.\n\nNot for academic credit\n\nInstructor: Trent Buskirk\n\nAll 2022 courses will be held in an alternative remote format.

This beautifully illustrated story takes us back in time to the jungles of Mexico to discover how Mayan scholars developed a sophisticated understanding of astronomy\, architecture\, and mathematics that enabled them to predict solstices\, solar eclipses\, weather patterns and planetary movements.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. Tickets $8. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the Museum Store.\n\nThe planetarium is operating at half capacity to maximize distancing between viewers.
