DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. SUMMARY:Presentation:Contributions to Quantile and Superquantile Regression
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Understanding the heterogeneous covariate-response relationship is central to modern data analysis.  Beyond the usual descriptors such as the mean and variance\, quantile and superquantile (also known as  the expected shortfall or conditional value-at-risk) regression can capture the differential covariate  effects on the upper or lower tails of the response distribution. This dissertation studies some  fundamental aspects of the statistical inference of quantile and super quantile regression. \n\nIn the first part of the dissertation\, we propose a novel approach to superquantile regression with a  critical modification of an optimization formulation in the recent literature. Most existing approaches for  superquantile regression rely explicitly on the modeling of the conditional quantile function. In this  dissertation\, we offer new insights into an optimization formulation for the superquantile\, based on  which we provide and validate a direct approach to superquantile regression estimation without relying  on additional quantile regression modeling. Operationally\, the approach can be well approximated by  fitting a linear quantile regression to an array of pre-estimated conditional superquantile processes. This  approach achieves implicit weighting of the data\, which is found to be automatically adaptive to data  heterogeneity in a variety of scenarios. With certain initial estimators based on binning of the covariate  space\, we show the proposed superquantile regression estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Via theoretical and numerical comparisons\, we show that the proposed approach has competitive\, and  often superior\, performance relative to other common approaches in the literature. \n\nIn the second part of the dissertation\, we study pseudo-Bayesian inference for possibly sparse quantile  regression models. We find that by coupling the asymmetric Laplace working likelihood with  appropriate shrinkage priors\, we can deliver pseudo-Bayesian inference that adapts automatically to the  possible sparsity in quantile regression analysis. After a suitable adjustment on the posterior variance\,  the proposed method provides asymptotically valid inference under heterogeneity. Furthermore\, the  proposed approach leads to oracle asymptotic efficiency for the active (nonzero) quantile regression  coefficients and super-efficiency for the non-active ones. We also discuss the theoretical extension when  the covariate dimension increases with the sample size at a controlled rate. By avoiding the need to  pursue dichotomous variable selection as well as nuisance parameter estimation\, the Bayesian computational framework demonstrates desirable inferential stability.

The course is both hands-on and conceptual. It begins by discussing what is unique about web surveys and when their use is most appropriate\, followed by an introduction to survey errors that can affect the quality of web survey data. Small groups of students will each develop a research problem and a questionnaire to address their problem\, designed for online administration. They will pretest the question wording\, program the questionnaire using a web survey development platform (no programming experience is required)\, and assess users’ (respondents’) experience while interacting with the web-based instrument. Students will also develop basic plans for data collection and analysis. The course focuses on case studies with specific large-scale national surveys: the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R)\, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES)\, and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Relevant design features of the NCS-R\, NHANES and HRS include survey weights that take into account differences in probability of selection into the sample and differences in response rates\, as well as stratification and clustering in the multistage sampling procedures used in identifying the sampled households and individuals. This beautifully illustrated story takes us back in time to the jungles of Mexico to discover how Mayan scholars developed a sophisticated understanding of astronomy\, architecture\, and mathematics that enabled them to predict solstices\, solar eclipses\, weather patterns and planetary movements.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats.
