SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. SUMMARY:Exhibition:the small details
DESCRIPTION:Artists Amy Sacksteder and Brenda Singletary are both visual storytellers\, exploring their relationships to place and time through the contemplation of objects and raw materials within the context and the process of painting. Although disparate in their methods and aesthetic choices\, there is a surprising connection in their deep commitment to the particulars\, in all the small details more than “the big picture”…the idiosyncrasies and incidentals that give meaning\, resonance\, and renewal to their own visual languages\, and artistic practices ongoing. Visit our website to learn more: https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/the-small-details.html.\n\n*the small details* was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities Gallery High Stakes Art Initiative. This two-person exhibition opportunity intends to offer support and further exposure specifically for regional contemporary artists.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Human Code— My Journey from Engineering to Manager\n\nThe path of becoming an engineering manager isn’t always straightforwardor easy. Engineering requires a prescribed mindset and skills that don’t necessarily translate to managing people. In this talk\, Jeff shares hisstory of becoming a manager along with the lessons he’s learned and practical tips for making the transition.\n\nSpeaker: Jeff Carnegie \nJeff has been an engineering manager in the Restaurants group at Yelp for two years. Before Yelp\, he worked at companies like PayPal and Vevo along with anumber of other consumer-facing technology startups. He loves the challenge of taking a product concept and turning it into a product millions of people love to use. Even more\, he loves working with talented people and helping them reach their potential. Jeff lives in Bend\, OR with his wife and daughter and loves to take advantage of all of the outdoor activities it has to offer.\n\nModerator: Kelly Greenia \nKelly is a Lead Technical Recruiter and has been at Yelp for six years. She loves getting to share herexperiences at Yelp with candidates\, work with extraordinarily friendly people\, and work on recruiting projects. She recently moved to Santa Cruz\, CA with her husband\, their pet bearded dragon\, and her ever growing collection of plants. \n\n\nAbout Yelping From Home:\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering andproduct teams.\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together.\nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelp employees from engineering and product share theirstories about career development\, technical skills and workplace challenges in a well-distributed environment.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Methods of Survey Sampling - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Methods of Survey Sampling\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:30pm EST\nT/Th\n\nA fundamental feature of many sample surveys is a probability sample of subjects. Probability sampling requires rigorous application of mathematical principles to the selection process. Methods of Survey Sampling is a moderately advanced course in applied statistics\, with an emphasis on the practical problems of sample design\, which provides students with an understanding of principles and practice in skills required to select subjects and analyze sample data. Topics covered include stratified\, clustered\, systematic\, and multi-stage sample designs\, unequal probabilities and probabilities proportional to size\, area probability sampling\, ratio means\, sampling errors\, frame problems\, cost factors\, and practical designs and procedures. Emphasis is on practical considerations rather than on theoretical derivations\, although understanding of principles requires review of statistical results for sample surveys. The course includes an exercise that integrates the different techniques into a comprehensive sample design.\n\nWhy take this course? \n- To understand the basic ideas\, concepts and principles of probability sampling from an applied perspective\n- To be able to identify and appropriately apply sampling techniques to survey design problems\n- To be able to compute the sample size for a variety of sample designs\n- To understand and be able to assess the impact of the sample design on survey estimates\n- To learn how to design and select a probability sample involving complex sampling techniques in a survey project\, and receive expert feedback on a sampling report\n\nCourse Hours: 3\n\nInstructors: Raphael Nishimura\, Sunghee Lee\n\nPrerequisite: Two graduate-level courses in statistical methods.\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Physics Graduate Summer Symposium (PGSS) | Linear Maximum Distance Separable Coded Matrix Inversion
DESCRIPTION:A cumbersome operation in physics\, numerical analysis and linear algebra\, optimization\, and machine learning\, is inverting large full-rank matrices. In this paper\, we propose a coded computing approach for recovering matrix inverse approximations. We first present an approximate matrix inversion algorithm that does not require a matrix factorization but uses a black-box least squares optimization solver as a subroutine to give an estimate of the inverse of real full-rank matrices. We then present a distributed framework for which our algorithm can be implemented and show how we can leverage from sparsest-balanced MDS generator matrices to devise inverse coded computing schemes. We focus on balanced Reed-Solomon codes\, which are optimal in terms of computational load\; and communication from the workers to the master server. We also discuss how our algorithms can be used to compute the pseudoinverse of a full-rank matrix and how the communication can be secured from eavesdroppers.
