SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Gallery Summer Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The exhibit is on display for public viewing weekdays from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. through August 18\, 2022\, in the main lobby of Lane Hall\, located at 204 South State Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Planning\, Control\, and Estimation for Diverse Multi-UAS Missions
DESCRIPTION:Light refreshments will be provided.\n\nChair: Ella Atkins\n\nAbstract:\nUnmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are being used for a variety of single vehicle missions such as surveillance\, inspection\, and payload delivery. Teams of UAS can perform these same missions more efficiently and will pursue novel cooperative missions not possible with a single vehicle. However\, this comes at the cost of increased system complexity and introduces the challenge of safe team coordination. This motivates our research to pursue four diverse multi-UAS mission configurations. We propose novel methods to command and control teams of UAS with the majority supported with full-scale experimental validation.\n\nTo support all experiments conducted in this thesis\, an experimental test bed consisting of a custom\, open-source quadrotor\, flight controller\, and supporting infrastructure is developed with designs and code shared publicly. \n\nThis thesis offers four specific contributions to enable the deployment of UAS teams in missions with potential to benefit society. First\, an existing formation control method\, continuum deformation\, is experimentally validated with observed tracking errors and delays informing the theory. Required inter-vehicle separation constraints are defined and applied to the real system. A global minimum separation bound based on a local controller error bound is derived to guarantee safety during real-world flights.\n\nSecond\, a novel heads-up haptic pushing interface is developed that enables a user to move a heavy payload carried by multiple small UAS through a crowded cluttered environment. Real-time estimation of user applied force via an instrumented payload updates virtual dynamics of an admittance controller to guide the system. This capability will support resilient and safe package delivery to untrained consumers and can assist in delivering medical and survival supplies in disaster relief scenarios.\n\nThird\, computationally efficient planning methods are developed to support wildfire mapping over a large area by a team of UAS. A state machine is used to handle multi-vehicle task allocation between exploration (coverage) and exploitation (line following). Efficiency gains are achieved by separating the 3D problem into 2D lateral and 1D terrain avoidance sub-problems. \nThis work offers a first step towards mapping increasingly severe wildfire threats that cause significant damage and claim the lives of hundreds of people every year.\n\nFourth\, a generalized path planner is developed to manage a deformable small UAS formation capable of rotating\, expanding\, contracting\, and shearing. Provably sufficient inter-agent collision avoidance constraints are leveraged to efficiently plan safe trajectories in large-scale complex but static environments. An integrated guidance and control module onboard each small UAS tracks the designed trajectory while avoiding pop-up obstacles and vehicle failures by following an ideal fluid flow field airspace template. \n\nWe are only beginning to imagine and prototype the missions made possible with teams of UAS. This thesis provides problem formulations\, solution methods\, and experimental realizations for four multi-UAS mission configurations. Countless other missions can be pursued that will operate safely and can improve quality of life. Continued research is needed to achieve this including full system integration with onboard sensing and collaboration with key stakeholders for each mission that deeply understand the problem spaces. Nonetheless\, this thesis provides a solid foundation for future researchers to build upon.
