SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Data-driven Methods for Automated Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe current gold standard for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) diagnosis is X-ray angiography. Visual estimation can be subjective\, therefore semi-automated software tools such as Quantitative Coronary Angiography (QCA) have been developed to quantify disease severity. Alternatively\, functional metrics such as Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) have demonstrated better diagnostic outcomes than anatomical assessment\, but they are not widely used due to cost and risk. Ideally\, quantitative and functional information could be derived directly from X-ray angiography images without the additional risks\, time\, and cost associated with performing FFR or QCA.\n\nThe goal of this project is to develop automated data-driven approaches for anatomical and functional quantification of disease severity using X-ray angiography images. To this end\, we have developed algorithms for 1) automated coronary vessel segmentation\, 2) stenosis detection and characterization\, 3) 3D reconstruction of coronary anatomy\, and 4) image-based flow extraction. These algorithms can be used in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to assess the functional significance of disease.\n\nWe first present AngioNet\, a neural network for coronary segmentation from X-ray angiography images. Conventional algorithms relying on thresholding or filtering cannot distinguish between the coronary vessels and the catheter used to inject the dye. AngioNet’s key innovation is an Angiographic Processing Network\, or APN\, which learns the best possible combination of pre-processing filters to improve segmentation performance. AngioNet demonstrates state-of-the-art segmentation accuracy (Dice score = 0.864) and does not segment the catheter in challenging cases where other neural networks fail.\n\nBuilding upon AngioNet\, we developed combination of neural networks and image processing algorithms to automatically localize\, segment\, and measure stenoses. This pipeline was able to measure stenosis diameter within 0.206±0.155mm or approximately 1 pixel of ground truth measurements from QCA. It is also the first automated pipeline to quantify rather than categorize disease severity.\n\nAlthough measuring stenosis diameter in 2D images is useful\, a more robust approach would be to measure diameters in the 3D coronary anatomy. Another advantage of the 3D coronary anatomy is that it can be used to perform CFD simulations of blood flow and compute functional metrics such as FFR. To this end\, we developed a machine learning approach for automated 3D vessel reconstruction from a series of uncalibrated 2D X-ray angiography images. This approach is superior to projective geometry methods for 3D reconstruction due to their semi-automatic nature and reliance on accurate knowledge of input image acquisition angles. Our machine learning approach has demonstrated sub-pixel error in radius reconstruction (0.16±0.07mm) and 1% error in FFR computed in a reconstructed coronary tree.\n\nIn addition to the 3D coronary geometry\, information about patient-specific flow or pressure is required to perform a hemodynamics simulation and compute FFR. We developed an algorithm that tracks vessel area in sequential frames of a segmented angiography series to estimate relative flow in each branch. We validated the algorithm in the simplest possible case\, using a simulation of dye transport under steady flow conditions as the ground truth. On average\, the difference in relative flow per branch was 5.15% for a healthy coronary tree and 3.68% in a coronary tree with stenosis.\n\nWe finally demonstrated the successes and limitations of the methods developed in this thesis by comparing computational FFR derived using the above algorithms against clinically measured FFR. The error between the calculated and clinically measured FFR was 0.1\, corresponding to an 11% error.\n\nCommittee Chair(s):\nDr. C. Alberto Figueroa and Dr. Brahmajee K. SUMMARY:Presentation:A Novel Bioelastomer Platform with Tailorable Design Parameters for Cartilage Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nArticular cartilage has limited ability to self-repair\, which often causes focal defects to progress into post traumatic osteoarthritis. Autologous chondrocyte implantation\, a process in which chondrocytes are harvested from the patient\, expanded in monolayer culture\, and injected into the defect site\, is one of the most common approaches to treat cartilage defect. However\, chondrocyte dedifferentiation during this process reduces their ability to durably restore cartilage function. Chondrocyte-based cartilage tissue engineering offers alternative approaches for cartilage repair to overcome the limitations of current clinical options by developing environments that combines cues from synthetic scaffold and biological factors to enhance chondrocyte function. However\, the translation to the clinic has been limited by our incomplete understanding of how scaffold design parameters interact together to control cell function. Therefore\, this dissertation focuses on designing a chondrocyte-based biomaterial platform made with a novel elastomeric synthetic scaffold\, poly(glycerol dodecanedioate) (PGD)\, to investigate the combinatory effects of design parameters on chondrocytes behavior in vitro.\n\nFirst\, this thesis evaluates the effects of surface modification of PGD on the shape and extracellular matrix (ECM) production of chondrocyte\, both of which are crucial for robust cartilage formation. I investigated two different strategies to generate a biomaterial surface with high cell affinity: 1) coating with various concentration of collagen type I or hyaluronic acid individually or in combination\, or 2) altering the surface charge and roughness using various level of alkaline hydrolysis. Our results revealed the combinatorial effects of ligand composition and density or surface charge and roughness on human articular chondrocyte function.\n\nLastly\, I used finite element analysis to determine if the local strain fields that developed inside the pores under load could be tuned to be within the range shown to have an anabolic effect on chondrocyte function. The tensile strains that develop along 31% – 71% pore surfaces inside of porous PGD scaffolds\, according to varying pore size and porosity\, were at levels shown to stimulate chondrocyte ECM production\, indicating that the pore structural parameters could be tuned to optimize cellular-level strain profiles. These results suggest that porous PGD scaffolds have the potential to guide cartilage regeneration.\n\nOverall\, this dissertation produces a platform for cartilage tissue engineering using a novel bioelastomer PGD\, in which the scaffold design parameters\, such as surface modification and cellular strain\, can be modified to enhance chondrocyte function.\n\nCommittee Chair(s):\nDr. Rhima Coleman\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91391389305\, Passcode: PGD

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Book Talk. From Development to Democracy: The Transformations of Modern Asia
DESCRIPTION:This event will be moderated by Mary Gallagher\, Director\, International Institute\; Amy and Alan Lowenstein Professor in Democracy\, Democratization\, and Human Rights\, U-M Department of Political Science.\n\nOver the past century\, Asia has been transformed by rapid economic growth\, industrialization\, and urbanization—a spectacular record of development that has turned one of the world’s poorest regions into one of its richest. Yet Asia’s record of democratization has been much more uneven\, despite the global correlation between development and democracy. Why have some Asian countries become more democratic as they have grown richer\, while others—most notably China—haven’t? In *From Development to Democracy*\, Dan Slater and Joseph Wong offer a sweeping and original answer to this crucial question.\n\nThe event will be followed by a reception.\n \n Slater specializes in the politics and history of enduring dictatorships and emerging democracies\, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. His research interests include comparative politics\, international relations\, world politics\, and methodology. He is the author of *Ordering Power: Contentious Politics and Authoritarian Leviathans in Southeast Asia* (Cambridge University Press\, 2010) and co-editor of *Southeast Asia in Political Science: Theory\, Region\, and Qualitative Analysis* (Stanford University Press\, 2008).\n \n Wong is the author of many academic articles and several books\, including *Healthy Democracies: Welfare Politics In Taiwan and South Korea* and *Betting on Biotech: Innovation and the Limits of Asia’s Developmental State*\, both published by Cornell University Press. He has been a visiting scholar at institutions in the U.S.\, Taiwan\, Korea\, and the UK\; has worked extensively with the World Bank and the UN\; and has advised governments on matters of public policy in Asia\, Africa\, the Americas\, and Europe. His current research focuses on poverty and innovation.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at https://myumi.ch/n8ePe.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
