SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:FUN
DESCRIPTION:What Can ‘A Pile of Stuff’ Truly Become?\n \nUnlike any art museum exhibition you’ve seen\, FUN (working title) will transform before your very eyes as it becomes what you — our community\, our students\, and our visitors — make of it.\n \nOver the course of this exhibition\, UMMA’s glass-walled Stenn gallery will become a creation space. Piles of materials and supplies will form the backdrop of a collaborative\, summer-long free artists’ workshop. A place to create\, experiment\, glue\, paint\, and get messy.\n \nYou’re invited to roll up your sleeves and work have fun alongside local artist Mark Tucker and his U-M students to help create this colorful\, kinetic\, and altogether FUN art installation. Inspired by objects in UMMA’s collection\, you’ll create giant movable and interactive sculptures (AKA puppets) that will take on a life of their own. \n \nAlong the way\, you may uncover how art is made\, how a museum works\, and maybe even discover something about yourself.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the UMMA Docent Program\, the U-M Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts\, the U-M School of Education\, and the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program\, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.\n

DESCRIPTION:Reception: Friday\, September 9th\, 5-7 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yuekai Sun\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many instances of algorithmic bias are caused by distribution shifts\, but most algorithmic fairness practices were not developed with distribution shifts in mind. This discrepancy between the causes of algorithmic biases and the premise of prior work on algorithmic fairness leads us to study whether enforcing fairness mitigates algorithmic biases caused by distribution shifts. On one hand\, we show that there are scenarios in which enforcing fairness does not improve model performance. In fact\, it may even harm performance. On the other hand\, we derive sufficient conditions under which enforcing group and individual fairness successfully mitigates algorithmic biases due to distribution shifts.\n\n\nYuekai Sun is an assistant professor in the statistics department at the University of Michigan. His research is guided by the statistical and computational challenges in machine learning. Some topics of recent interest are algorithmic fairness\, transfer learning\, and federated learning.\n\nhttps://yuekai.github.io/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Welfare Politics in Cambodia: An Examination of the National Ageing Policy 2017-2030
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the Cambodian government’s approach to maintain peace and stability in Cambodia through an examination of the Cambodian National Ageing Policy (NAP) 2017-2030. The NAP made an important case study as it is one of the forefront social welfare policies that the Cambodian government implemented along with the National Social Protection Policy Framework (NSPPF) 2016-2025 following a\ncontested election in 2013. The tracing of the country’s political development in the post-conflict period (1990-present) helps inform the analysis on the Cambodian government’s policy choice toward the vulnerable population such as the old age. The implementation of the NAP can be viewed as a positive step toward creating an inclusive society where no one is left behind. However\, I argue that the NAP should be seen first as an apparatus development strategy to reaffirm the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) ruling legitimacy and popularity by proving the ability of an authoritarian ruler to care for the population. Using empirical data collected from my field research attest to my argument on how the Cambodian government incorporates ageing policy as an instrument to strengthen its ruling power\, thus\, the stability of the regime. By critically assessing the ageing policy’s implementing progress and impact outcomes\, this study uncovers the differences between how this social welfare policy serves and benefits the Cambodian government and the ageing population.\n\nRegister at: http://myumi.ch/5W2NA

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | An Example of Mobility: The Epigraphic Record of Migration from Hadrumetum to Lambaesis
DESCRIPTION:The work of Jean-Marie Lassère in Roman North Africa has provided a foundation for understanding where and when people were moving across the region in the 1st–3rd centuries CE using several hundred epigraphic examples. In this talk\, I closely examine one case of four inscriptions from Lambaesis where people claimed to be from Hadrumetum and integrate them into an understanding of the road system of the area to demonstrate not just where people were moving\, but how they were moving across the landscape. This one case study sets the foundation for a wider study of the epigraphic record and the road system across Roman North Africa that fits into more modern trends of mobility and migration studies. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Taming corporate power in the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:There is broad consensus in the US that monopolistic corporations have grown too powerful and that we need to revive antitrust to take on the “curse of bigness.” But information and communication technologies have fundamentally altered the operations of our economy in ways that undermine the basic categories we use to understand it. Nationality\, industry\, firm\, size\, employee\, and other fundamental terms are increasingly perplexing. If we want to understand and tame the new sources of economic power\, we need a new diagnosis and a new set of tools.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Collin Ward\, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
DESCRIPTION:Photochemical oxidation (photo-oxidation) of crude oil spilled at sea has been studied for over half a century. However\, prior to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill\, photo-oxidation was widely considered a secondary weathering process that impacted a small fraction of spilled oil. Accordingly\, photo-oxidation was not included in oil spill fate and trajectory models and response operations. In this talk\, I’ll describe several key findings related to the rates\, pathways\, controls\, and impacts of crude oil photo-oxidation in the aftermath of the DWH spill. These findings have collectively changed the perspective of photochemical weathering in the oil spill sciences\, leading to its inclusion in oil spill models and increased consideration during response operations. I’ll also share my perspective on the many reasons why it took a devastating environmental disaster to make such progress. Finally\, I’ll discuss the role sunlight may play during future oil spills\, including spills in colder\, high-latitude waters where risks are increasing as a consequence of global climate change.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquia Series: Building Inclusive Teams
DESCRIPTION:Research demonstrates a strong correlation between inclusion\, diversity\, and organizational effectiveness. Inclusive teams enjoy higher productivity\, and lower attrition. This shaped Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) commitment to building an empowered workforce that’s inclusive and diverse\, where everyone feels they belong.\n\nThis discussion will outline efforts to:\n\n—Embed inclusivity into all aspects of organizational operations.\n—Engage the workforce in a shared commitment to foster belonging\, togetherness\, inclusion\, and psychological safety.\n—Build inclusively diverse teams to enhance mission results.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nToni L. Coleman Carter is the energetic Chief Inclusion and Collaborator Officer who strategically drives an inclusive future for Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in Idaho Falls\, Idaho. She's a change champion who collaborates with Laboratory and community leaders to create environments which empower and engage others to achieve a competitive advantage\, further leveraging talent platforms to enhance employee capabilities\, build next generation leaders\, and drive bottom-line results. She also partners as a consultant to create\, develop\, and oversee inclusion and diversity initiatives\, while increasing inclusion awareness and providing governance for INL’s inclusion leadership councils (ERGs).\n\nCarter has nine years of combined governmental experience\, which includes her time as the deputy mayor for the Village of Hanover Park Illinois. Prior to joining INL\, she spent 23 years in corporate America working for Motorola Solutions in Chicago\, IL\, an $8 billion technology organization. Carter also spent time in the pharmaceutical and food service industries. She worked for K&B (Katz and Besthoff\, now Rite-Aid) and Phar-Mor Pharmacies as a pharmacy technician and as a manager for McDonald’s and Taco Bell Corporations.\n\nIn April of 2007\, Carter was elected as Hanover Park’s first black council member. Carter’s position at the Village allowed her to assist with the recruitment\, selection\, and appointment of department heads and to help create policy operation strategies. During this time\, Carter founded the Village’s Cultural Inclusion and Diversity committee\, the largest volunteer committee in the Village. After two years of confronting challenging opportunities\, she became the Village’s first black deputy mayor.\n\nIn her position\, Carter created a homeless prevention task force that focused on providing solutions to reduce the impact of the 2008-2010 economic crisis\, preventing home foreclosures and providing transitional housing for residents. In 2008\, she was appointed to Hanover Park’s Crime Prevention Task Force\, a team that helped design crime prevention strategies and methodologies for the Village. The same year\, Hanover Park named her Inclusion and Diversity Champion\, and she received an Outstanding Leadership Award from Motorola’s Women’s Business Council.\n\nCarter has earned numerous awards for her humanitarian efforts. In 2020\, she was named Idaho National Laboratory’s Community Award recipient. In 2019\, she earned Idaho’s Hometown Hero Award Medal and was one of Idaho Business Review’s Women of the Year. In 2018\, she was recognized as one of DiversityMBA’s Top 100 Executive Leaders Under 50. In 2015\, the National Diversity Council honored Toni with the Leadership Excellence Award for corporate inclusion\, and she was named Inclusion and Diversity Champion of the Year by Diversity MBA. In 2013\, the Illinois Commission on Diversity and Human Relations honored Carter with the Dr. King Workforce Inclusiveness and Community Activism award. The 2010 issue of Who’s Who in Black Chicago named her one of the most influential blacks in government. She is a member of the National Society for Human Resource Management\, and the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business. She is a certified diversity practitioner and professional development coach. She is currently pursuing certifications as a change management and organizational development professional. She earned a bachelor and a master of science degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago.\n\nCarter dedicates part of her life to helping people who have been abused. Her memoir\, When Trouble Finds You\, is being used as a tool of hope\, inspiration\, and education for others who may have suffered the way she did as a child. When Carter is not spending time with her three wonderful children - Candes\, John\, and Taylor - she loves building community relationships and leveraging strategic partnerships.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Physics Department Seminar | Single-Molecular Step Resolution of Neuron Transport and Non-Thermal Equilibrium Statistical Physics
DESCRIPTION:We developed optical probes which enabled the tracking of individual molecular cargos by dynein motors in live neurons for 900 µm. Analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the motion showed that the cargo switched stochastically from one to five pairs during the transport over this distance. Clearly resolved single-molecular steps revealed that the dwell times between individual steps requires the hydrolysis of 2 ATPs. The new proposed model is consistent with extensive structural\, single-molecule and biochemical measurements. The motion is described by a steady-state “effective temperature” 6-fold higher than 310 K. The application of the fluctuation theorem\, first proved in 1993\, is used to give a minimum “uncertainty principle” limit\, ΔQ ε² ≥ 2kB T𝚎𝚏𝚏\, where ΔQ = T𝚎𝚏𝚏ΔS is the heat entropy and ε² ≡ 〈x²〉 ─ 〈x²〉/〈x〉² is the displacement normalize dispersion of motion.\n\nProfessor Chu received the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing laser cooling and trapping of atoms\, and served as Secretary of Energy from 2009-2013. Please see Professor Chu's complete bio here: https://profiles.stanford.edu/steve-chu?releaseVersion=9.7.0\n\nThere will be a reception before the seminar at 3:30 pm in the Don Meyer Commons.\n\nIf you can't attend in person\, here is the live stream link: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/physics090922.html
