DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Predictive analysis and deep learning of functional MRI in Alzheimer's disease
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAlzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia pose a significant burden to individuals and public health. AD is expected to grow in prevalence in the coming decades due to the aging population. Brain atrophy is a major component of AD pathology and can occur before symptoms of cognitive impairment. However\, pathological brain atrophy and symptoms of cognitive impairment may be a result of many years of disease impacts. Evidence supports the need for early detection of impacted neurocircuitry to foresee future progression to advanced stages of AD and develop treatments. This dissertation examines predictive modeling and deep learning methods to identify brain-behavior relationships and learn low-dimensional representations of brain activity from MR imaging data. The dissertation and methods are separated into four parts.  \n\nPart one of this work examines multivariate analysis approaches applied to functional connectivity from subjects with an early clinical phenotype of AD\, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A regression framework using partial least squares and feature selection demonstrated significant brain-behavior relationships with measures of cognition and memory. The results also confirm other findings that ecologically relevant task-based connectivity serves as a ``stress-test\" for memory-related deficits such as those observed in MCI. This approach elucidated brain regions that may be implicated in MCI and warrant future study (superior temporal gyrus\, inferior parietal lobule\, and superior frontal gyrus). Part two extends the multivariate analyses studied in part one to an additional brain imaging modality\, arterial spin labeling (ASL). Cerebral blood flow (CBF) as measured by ASL demonstrated brain-behavior relationships with composite measures of memory and learning in a cohort along the spectrum of AD\, demonstrating that CBF data warrant further investigation as a predictor in this application.\n\nParts three and four utilize a variational autoencoder (VAE) model\, a deep learning approach to encode latent representations that aim to disentangle sources of fMRI signal. A surface-based VAE trained on only healthy controls is shown to be generalizable to patients with known AD pathology. The results maintained individual separation and high input/decoder output spatial reconstruction correlation of r=0.8 across all three groups. Part four extended the surface-based model used in part three to a volumetric fMRI approach. Similarly to the surface-based model\, high reconstruction accuracy (NRMSE=0.68) and temporal correlation (r=0.8) between input and decoder output are demonstrated. This approach is more readily applicable to 3D fMRI data as compared to the surface-based model. \n\nIn summary\, this work has proposed and developed multivariate and deep learning analysis techniques for brain imaging data in the context of AD with the ultimate goal of improving detection and intervention for early pathological changes in the brain.\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIpcOigrjIsHtJq_xJ1aboK1T0PdWpTkBP5\n*Registration Required\n\nCommittee Chair(s):\nDr. Scott J. SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Children's and adults' understanding and learning about genetic inheritance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Genetic inheritance is a fundamental concept in biology\, as it is the mechanism for the transmission of traits. Therefore\, understanding genetic inheritance is pivotal for science education and biological reasoning. Prior work on children’s understanding of genetic inheritance suggests that children initially have a “mother bias” such that\, if parents have different traits\, children think that offspring will have the same trait as the mother rather than the father. However\, this pattern might be due to prior work only allowing children to select one possible offspring. In this presentation\, I will present two novel tasks to assess children's and adults' beliefs about inheritance. Using these tasks\, I show that even 4-year-old children have a more sophisticated understanding of inheritance than previously believed\, and that this understanding is constrained by different biases than those identified in prior work. I will also show how these biases are present for different traits and animals\, are resistant to instruction\, and persevere into adulthood. These new insights inform our understanding of children's biological reasoning and can be used to design new genetics lessons.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What I Talk about when I Talk about Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Arabic is unconditionally the national language of Palestinians\, but for many it is no longer their mother-tongue. More than a century after the early waves of immigration to the Americas\, and more than seven decades after the Nakba of 48\, generations of Palestinians have grown up in a variety of different contexts within Israel-Palestine and the world at large. This ongoing scattered state has led to the proliferation of Palestinian culture as it is simultaneously growing in multiple directions\, depending on geographical\, political\, and lingual contextualization. The Palestinian story no longer exists exclusively in Arabic. A new generation of Palestinian and Palestinian-descended writers and artists from both Latin and North America\, Scandinavia\, and Europe at large\, as well as Israel-Palestine are bringing stories of their heritage and the Palestinian nation into a variety of languages such Spanish\, Italian\, English\, Danish\, and Hebrew—among so many other languages. \n\nIn this talk\, Maurice Ebileeni explores how the Palestinian homeland is being imagined in multiple languages from a variety of positions both locally and globally and wishes to discuss unsettling questions about this current situation. He also invites us to look to the future to speculate about how a Palestinian nation might still house the notion of home for an increasingly diverse Palestinian population.\n\n***********************************************\n\nMaurice Ebileeni is a member of faculty in the English department at the University of Haifa. DESCRIPTION:Title:\nGiving Structure to the Cognitive Map\n\nAbstract:\nThe cognitive map within the minds of animals is the mental process of perceiving and arranging relevant environmental features upon which behavioral decision making processes can be built (Tolman 1948). The previous 5-decades have seen investigation of the neural processes that underlie animals’ ability to cognitively map spaces primarily through recording the electrical activity of neurons as animals navigate a physical space (O’Keefe 1974). Among the most prominent features of the cognitive mapping system within the brain are the discovery of place cells which respond to an animals’ specific location in space\, and lay the foundation of seeing the hippocampus as being foundational to the cognitive map (O’Keefe & Nadel 1978).\n\nRecently more attention has been placed on how the cognitive mapping system of the brain encodes for structural features (Behrens et al. 2018). However\, little research has gone into how structural features directly interact with spatial representations of the hippocampal system. Data presented here demonstrates that while CA1 place-representations are relatively unimpacted by the structure of the space the animal is in\, one synapse away in dorsal subiculum\, a mapping of structure emerges within the activity patterns of individual and populations of neurons. These results show the importance of environmental structure when studying spatial navigation\, and helps elucidate the relatively understudied brain region of the subiculum.

DESCRIPTION:We present a measurement of the mass of the W boson\, the charged mediator of the weak force. The measurement is performed using data corresponding to 8.8/fb of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron between 2002 and 2011. In a sample with approximately 4 million W boson candidate events\, we measure M(W) = 80433.5+-6.4(stat)+-6.9(syst) MeV = 80433.5+-9.4 MeV. The measurement has a precision exceeding that of all previous measurements of M(W) combined and it is in significant tension with the standard model expectation. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Evaluation of Phosphate Treatment and Long-Term RUNX2 Suppression On Adult Human MSC Chondrogenesis and Neo-Cartilage Formation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nClinical repair strategies for articular cartilage defects are limited by the inability of the tissue to self-repair\, often resulting in post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). PTOA arises from the degradation of structural cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins responsible for maintaining articular cartilage mechanics\, such as aggrecan and collagen. Current cartilage tissue engineering strategies aim to utilize human-derived cells to regenerate cartilage prior to the onset of PTOA. Limited availability of chondrocytes – the primary cell type in articular cartilage – imposes a need for alternatives. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are a promising solution as they can be found in a variety of tissues and can differentiate into MSC-derived chondrocytes (MdChs). However\, MSCs are limited by their inability to produce a stable chondrogenic phenotype and deposit and maintain ECM in long-term culture due to maturation\, (hypertrophy) where metalloproteinases cleave collagen II and aggrecan. As a result\, MSC-derived cartilage regeneration techniques are not yet suitable for clinical use. The central objective of this thesis is to increase cartilage matrix accumulation for more clinically functional cartilage tissue by increasing matrix deposition and stabilizing the chondrogenic phenotype of MSCs.\n\nWe investigated two approaches to increase cartilage ECM accumulation and improve MdCh-based cartilage tissue engineering functional outcomes: inorganic phosphate (Pi) treatment and RUNX2 suppression. First\, we found that Pi increased cartilage ECM production\, but also increased MdCh hypertrophy\, while RUNX2 suppression increased stiffness of neo-cartilage tissues long-term. Finally\, we showed that combined treatment of Pi and RUNX2 suppression exhibited reduced MdCh hypertrophy but did not significantly increase matrix accumulation. DESCRIPTION:Alan Thomas is editorial director at the University of Chicago Press\, where he oversees the selection of 270 books annually and acquires books in the humanities\, with a focus on literary studies. Since beginning work as an editor at Chicago in 1985\, he has published over 800 books\, including winners of the National Book Critics Circle Award for General Nonfiction\, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography\, the Modern Language Association’s Lowell Prize\, and Phi Beta Kappa’s Christian Gauss Award. Authors he has published in recent years include Dipesh Chakrabarty\, Teju Cole\, Amitav Ghosh\, Alice Kaplan\, Toril Moi\, Marjorie Perloff\, and Susan Stewart. Closer to home\, he is proud to have published at least eight books by members of the Michigan English department\, most recently Jonathan Freeman’s The Jewish Decadence. Alan’s recent initiatives at Chicago include the Thinking Literature series\, edited by Nan Z. Da and Anahid Nersessian\, and a relaunch of Chicago’s venerable Phoenix Poets series under the editorship of Srikanth Reddy. Alan’s writings and photographs have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books\, Design Observer\, Places Journal\, and in his 2018 photobook 55x5\, published by Marquand Editions.

DESCRIPTION:David Shechner Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor of Pharmacology\nUniversity of Washington\n\nKeywords: RNA\, proximity-biotinylation\, subcellular architecture\, nuclear architecture\, spatial biology\, biomolecular condensates\, interactomics\, nucleolus\, Xist.\n\nAbstract: In the context of the living cell\, very little RNA is naked. RNA molecules form complex\, dynamic networks of molecular interactions that underlie a host of biochemical functions\, and which are central to organizing subcellular compartmentalization. In humans\, for example\, RNAs are key determinants of chromatin folding\, and they nucleate and scaffold a host of biomolecular condensates that collectively control cellular metabolic\, epigenetic\, and stress-signaling pathways. But\, characterizing these structures—identifying the biomolecules within an RNA's subcellular microenvironment—remains technically cumbersome. \n\nTo address this challenge\, I introduce oligonucleotide-mediated proximity-interactome mapping (O-MAP)\, a straightforward and flexible method for identifying the proteins\, RNAs\, and genomic loci near a target RNA\, within its native cellular context. O-MAP uses programmable oligonucleotide probes to deliver proximity-biotinylating enzymes to a target RNA. These enzymes then pervasively label all nearby (~20 nm) molecules\, enabling their enrichment by streptavidin pulldown. O-MAP induces exceptionally precise RNA-targeted biotinylation\, and its modular design enables straightforward validation of probe pools and real-space optimization of the biotinylation radius\, thus overcoming key technical challenges for the field. Moreover\, O-MAP can be readily ported across different target RNAs and specimen types\, including patient-derived organoids and tissue samples. And\, O-MAP achieves this without complex cell-line engineering\, using only off-the-shelf parts and standard manipulations. \n\nUsing a small cohort of model RNAs\, we have developed a robust O-MAP toolkit for proteomic (O-MAP-MS)\, transcriptomic (O-MAP-Seq) and genome interaction (O-MAP-ChIP) discovery. O-MAP of the 47S-pre-rRNA—the long noncoding RNA that scaffolds the nucleolus—enabled a comprehensive \"multi-omic\" analysis of this subnuclear structure\, and revealed hundreds of novel nucleolar protein-\, RNA-\, and chromatin interactions. O-MAP of XIST—the master regulator of X-chromosome inactivation—revealed novel RNAs that may play a role in this process\, and unanticipated interactions between XIST and other chromatin-regulatory RNAs. Finally\, targeting O-MAP to introns within a key cardiac developmental gene enabled unprecedented molecular dissection of a subnuclear compartment that would be impossible to purify biochemically.\n\nGiven these results\, we believe that O-MAP will be a powerful tool for elucidating the mechanisms by which RNA molecules drive subcellular compartmentalization in time and space\, with particular impact on our understanding of nuclear architecture. DESCRIPTION:This paper estimates the effects of large donors’ political contributions on charitable contributions and fundraising. Political contributions reduce the effectiveness of charitable fundraising\, particularly in the Health and Other sectors. Charities therefore reduce fundraising\, which contributes to an overall elasticity of private charitable contributions to political contributions of -0.07. This aggregate effect combines large political donors’ charitable contribution behavior with spillover effects of their political giving on the charitable giving patterns of the remainder of the population. Subsequent analysis allows for heterogeneity in the ideologies of both political and charitable recipients.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kevin Smith\, PhD Candidate\, U-M IOE\n\nDescription: Social Inequality can be defined by unequal outcomes that occur as a result of uneven distribution of resources. Many of the disparities that are observed across income quantiles occur in concentrated United States communities. Within these concentrated areas\, unique social and behavioral responses exist to healthcare\, health policy\, and public health policy. While the US collects an enormous amount of demographic\, health\, and economic data at various community levels\, there still exists a gap in how decision-makers can leverage these data to design appropriate community policy initiatives whose outcomes are intended to reduce the observed disparities nationwide. In this seminar\, we will discuss applications of machine learning models in public health and healthcare policy and challenges in their respective outcome predictions.\n\nBio: Kevin B. Smith is a PhD candidate in the department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan and is co-advised by Dr. Brian Denton and Dr. Siqian Shen of IOE. His research is focused on applying industrial engineering and operations research tools to improve outcomes resulting from problems of social inequality. The mission of his research is to inform policymakers and the public of the critical factors that impact decisions with particular applications in organ allocation\, pandemic risk planning\, and clinical kidney stone care thus far. Additionally\, he is motivated to allocate resources equitably and improve decision-making outcomes in these settings. DESCRIPTION:Sign up for a free series of self-defense workshops!\n\nAiming to equip the incoming students with the skills to increase their self-confidence and preparedness for the unexpected\, the Engineering Student Government (ESG) in partnership with UofM Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS) is setting out with a newly established SaferSelf project. Starting on September 12th and running until October 10th a series of free empowerment self-defense workshops will be held weekly on Mondays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Central Campus (exact location TBD).\n\nEmpowerment self-defense sessions explore the culture of violence\, and teach concrete but practical effective skills for personal safety and physical self defense in a wide variety of contexts ranging from harassment to sexual assault. Participants will be able to:\n- understand how situational awareness can deter or prevent an attack.\n- use verbal skills for assertive communication.\n- evade and set boundaries (verbal & physical).\n- use practical options to make ourselves more comfortable when uncomfortable situations occur.\n- recognize and interrupt unwanted behavior when in social situations\, interpersonal/intimate relationships as well as interactions with strangers.\n\nThe series will be composed of the following workshops:\n1. Introduction to physical self-defense: 1.5hr\n2. Physical self-defense with strikes and kicks with pads: 1hr\n3. Physical self-defense with boxing element combination striking: 1h\n4. Top-to-bottom pressure points: 1hr\n5.
