SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: Public Mural Project
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.\n\nThe public murals will be displayed on Angell Hall\, Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, and MLB.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n*Pressed Against My Own Glass*\, exhibition\, September 15-October 21\, 2022. Location: Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer.\n\nThe exhibition *Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:New Processes Enabled by Innovative Materials for Environmental Application
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: The development of innovative materials enables new processes\, which can make a significant contribution to promoting sustainability\, e.g.\, decreasing the cost and increasing the supplies of water\, energy\, and health. This presentation will introduce two examples and talk about their environmental applications. One is about a chemical-free pathogen inactivation technology called locally enhanced electric field treatment (LEEFT). This technology has been applied for water disinfection and algae control. Another example is a three-dimensional (3D) filtration process based on rationally designed super-absorbent polymer (SAP) beads. Applications of 3D filtration have been demonstrated in water purification\, algae harvesting\, and environmental and biological sample preservation.\nBIO: Dr. Xing Xie is an Assistant Professor and the Carlton S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Journey of Self-Discovery
DESCRIPTION:To experience an interesting piece of art is to feel ALIVE. It propels one out of reality (for a moment) and transcends the spirit to a special place much like a spiritual awakening.\n\nI am interested in the creative process even more than the final product. The process of art making is therapeutic and one of self-discovery. It is a chance to play like a child and to allay fears/worries and to lose the confines of the world around you. It offers you a chance to dream\, dance and explore unknown worlds.\n\nThis exhibit is mainly focused on this creative process which I call the ‘Journey of Self-Discovery. Each painting has been created according to this process. Mindfulness is the goal.\n\nWe all see things from different angles based on our own individual experiences. I encourage you to look at things from your own perspective – each piece invites you to consider your own viewpoint\, a chance to let go and experience some unique personal other-worldly environments. Enjoy.

DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nABSTRACT:\nSynthetic biology (SB) is one of the most promising fields of research for the 21st century. SB offers powerful new ways to improve human health\, build the global economy\, manufacture sustainable materials\, and address climate change. However\, current access to SB-enabled breakthroughs is unequal\, largely due to bottlenecks in infrastructure and education. Here\, I describe our efforts to re-think the way we engineer biology using cell-free systems to address these bottlenecks. We show how the ability to readily store\, distribute\, and activate low-cost\, freeze-dried cell-free systems by simply adding water has opened new opportunities for on-demand biomanufacturing of vaccines for global health\, point-of-care diagnostics for environmental safety\, and education for SB literacy and citizenship. By integrating cell-free systems with artificial intelligence (AI)\, we also show the ability to accelerate the production of carbon-negative platform chemicals. Looking forward\, advances in engineering tools and new knowledge underpinning the fundamental science of living matter will ensure that SB helps solve humanity’s most pressing challenges. \n\nBIO:\nMichael Jewett is the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence\, the Walter P. Murphy Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering\, and Director of the Center for Synthetic Biology at Northwestern University. Dr. Jewett received his PhD in 2005 at Stanford University\, completed postdoctoral studies at the Center for Microbial Biotechnology in Denmark and the Harvard Medical School\, and was a guest professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). He is the recipient of the NIH Pathway to Independence Award\, David and Lucile Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering\, Camille-Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award\, and a Finalist for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists\, among others. He is the co-founder of SwiftScale Biologics\, Stemloop\, Inc.\, Pearl Bio\, Design Pharmaceuticals\, and Gauntlet Bio. Jewett is a Fellow of AIMBE\, AAAS\, and NAI.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Using Traffic Signals to Decongest Cities May Be Simpler Than We Thought
DESCRIPTION:This presentation focuses on two well-known means of re-timing ordinary traffic signals to mitigate city-street traffic congestion. The first entails synchronizing green times on 4-way (i.e.\, all-directional) street grids. The second involves re-timing the signals that reside along cordon lines\, to meter vehicle inflows during the morning rush. We show that\, in both cases\, simple strategies can perform remarkably well. The lecture will offer next steps toward real-world implementation. \n\nTo synchronize green times\, Professor Cassidy's team use common phase durations for all signals on a grid\, rather than optimize each signal’s timing plan to suit local conditions. This simple idea enables them to exploit features of perfectly orthogonal grids to synchronize all signals on the grid in two orthogonal (e.g.\, northbound\, and westbound) travel directions. As a result\, drivers headed toward clustered workplaces in the morning rush\, and away from those workplaces in the evening\, can enjoy exceptionally good signal progression over their entire trips\, even when their paths entail two directions. One synchronization mode is used for undersaturated conditions when queues dissipate during green times\; another is used when conditions become oversaturated with long residual queues\; and the team's strategy toggles promptly between these two synchronization modes\, as measurable conditions on the grid change over time. Simulations of numerous scenarios indicate that our simple\, adaptive strategy dramatically outperforms other synchronization schemes\, including complicated ones and those viewed as gold standards. Importantly\, the presentation also shows that their strategy can be easily modified to perform well on irregular\, real-world street grids.\n\nAs regards cordon metering\, they fill a gaping hole in the literature by providing logical and easy-to-follow rules on how exactly to place cordons around clustered workplaces. Simulations show that the simple rules hold for varying congestion levels and regional configurations\, and that following the rules can be impactful\, especially when cities become severely congested.\n\n---\n\nAbout the speaker: Michael Cassidy is the Robert Horonjeff Professor and Chancellor’s Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California\, Berkeley. He received a doctorate in Civil Engineering (majoring in Transportation Engineering) from Berkeley\; served for nearly 4 years as an Assistant Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette\, Indiana\; and joined the Berkeley faculty in 1994. He is currently an associate editor of the journal Transportation Research Part B. He is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory\; a former Director of the University Transportation Center for federal region 9\; and a Vice Chair in Berkeley’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. His research interests focus on transportation planning and management\, particularly in the areas of highway traffic\, public mass transit and multi-modal systems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Lecture: Micropropulsion Systems Using Water as a Propellant
DESCRIPTION:Hiroyuki Koizumi\nAssociate Professor \nDepartment of Advanced Energy \nThe University of Tokyo\nVisiting Associate Professor\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology\n\nAbout this lecture:\nThe University of Tokyo has been researching various micropropulsion systems using water as a propellant for diversified microsatellite missions. In this seminar\, I will introduce the research and development status of these propulsion systems: 1: water ion thrusters for missions that require high specific impulse\; 2: water resistojet thrusters for missions that require high and multi-directional thrusts\; 3: water Hall-effect thrusters for further delta-V requirement using high-electrical power\, and 4: water-metal combustion thrusters for high thrust enough for impulsive maneuvers. The first two thrusters have ongoing flight programs\, and those are also introduced here. The water ion thruster is based on the design developed for xenon propellant and demonstrated in orbit in 2014 and 2015. The university spin-off company\, Pale Blue\, developed its demonstration model and is scheduling its launch and operation on JAXA Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-4 by early 2023. The water resistojet thruster was equipped on 6U Lunar CubeSat\, EQUULEUS\, which has been waiting for the launch by Artemins 1 in 2022. The other two thrusters are in the research phase and do not yet have a flight program\, but here is the latest status of their research.\n\nBio:\nHiroyuki Koizumi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Energy and Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Tokyo\, Japan\, where he directs the Space Propulsion Laboratory and leads the development of micro-propulsion systems for microsatellites: Hodoyoshi-4\, PROCYON\, AQT-D\, and EQUULEUS. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Genetic conflict and the evolution of genome integrity
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nA single genome appears to be a cohesive community of distinct genes with common incentives. Across development\, genes collaborate to build a robust and fertile individual. Across evolution\, genes accumulate adaptive DNA sequence changes that build an even more robust\, and even more fertile\, individual. The more robust and fertile the individual\, the more copies of all these genes in the next generation. In this way\, our genome’s distinct genes contribute to a communal good. However\, much of our DNA actually serves no beneficial function. Most of this DNA has minimal effect on our health and fertility\; consequently\, natural selection fails to efficiently purge it from our genome. Some of this DNA harms us. This so-called “selfish DNA” acts akin to viruses\, hijacking our cell’s machinery to make more copies of itself. While most viruses achieve evolutionary success upon transmission from one individual to another\, these selfish elements achieve evolutionary success by increasing their own genomic copy number from one generation to another. When selfish elements win\, the rest of the genome loses. Compromised Darwinian fitness puts evolutionary pressure on our genome to police these elements. Selfish DNA fights back with counter-adaptations\, escalating a “molecular arms race.” In my seminar\, I will describe my lab’s efforts to define the identity\, molecular mechanisms\, and biological consequences of such genetic conflicts between genomic hijackers and genomic guardians. To gain these insights\, we generate interspecies swaps of adaptively evolving proteins that package the rapidly evolving repetitive DNA around\nthe telomeres and centromeres of Drosophila melanogaster. Using cell biology\, next generation sequencing\, and classical genetics\, we probe how intra-genomic conflict between genes and DNA repeats shapes the evolution of genome integrity.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

This technique\, known as radio occultation (RO)\, can provide valuable observations of ionospheric electron density and total electron content\, neutral atmospheric temperature and moisture to support space weather specification\, and forecasting\, weather prediction\, and climate monitoring.\n\nThe joint Taiwan-U.S. COSMIC-2 mission was launched in June 2019 and has been providing approximately 6\,000 profiles per day from 40N to 40S since inception. Equipped with an advanced GNSS receiver and unique antenna design\, COSMIC-2 has produced high signal-to-noise ratio RO measurements that penetrate deeper into the tropical lower troposphere than any previous RO missions. The ability of COSMIC-2 to capture water vapor in the lower tropical troposphere has been shown to be critical for the prediction of tropical cyclogenesis and heavy rainfall events associated with mesoscale convective systems along with the Mei-Yu front.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:No Straight Lines: Peculiar Pasts and Crooked Futures
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Eley’s work has fundamentally reframed key questions in the field of German history and lastingly shaped the discipline of history. His work spans centuries and reaches across oceans. The questions he has asked are both pointed and of universal relevance. His contributions witnessed and shaped the many “turns” the discipline of history itself has made. His list of publications spans more pages than the average reading list for preliminary examinations in the field of German history. If one counts the presentations he has given at workshops and conferences one would assume he has lived three lives. As the organizers of this symposium in his honor\, we suggest that the work of Geoff Eley deliberately evades “capture.” Instead of pounding a signpost into the ground and leaving his mark\, Geoff has built bridges between fields and made waves within them\, touching innumerable lives and minds in the process. To ride the waves and travel across these bridges by bringing together some of the many scholars\, colleagues\, students\, and friends that have learned with and from Geoff is the purpose of this symposium.\n\nNo Straight Lines celebrates Geoff Eley’s impressive career\, the breadth\, range and importance of his scholarship\, his spirit as a teacher\, mentor and colleague\, and his life-long commitment to justice\, within and beyond the academy. Starting out as a scholar of German nationalism and the German political right and reframing the “peculiarities” of that history as an emerging young scholar\, Geoff Eley’s work bore the imprint of comparative history\, of thinking with concepts and theories rather than applying them\, of pushing against boundaries that confine “acceptable” ways of thinking about the past\, which he is currently putting into practice again by writing a comprehensive history of 20th Century Europe. Throughout his career\, he has traced and critically reflected on how historical thinking has itself changed as a result of historical processes. No Straight Lines seeks to take stock of and celebrate the extent to which Geoff Eley’s work has in fact been indispensable to the intellectual shifts he has so skillfully traced and succinctly explained.\n\nBesides celebrating the breadth and impact of Geoff Eley’s scholarship\, No Straight Lines seeks to remind us all of the many ways in which his work was never just theoretical but was always connected with and energized by thinkers\, writers\, scholars\, and students\, and in turn\, supported and touched so many of them in lasting ways. In this regard the Saturday dinner is as crucial a part of this symposium\, as is the discussion of Eley’s scholarly footprint. That footprint was never purely abstract\; nor was it only intellectual. Rather it continues to invigorate the many friendships and collaborations he has built and sustained over his career. This symposium brings us together to honor the experience of learning from and with Geoff Eley.\n\nFind more information and the conference schedule here: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/eley/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. Poland as a Front-Line State: How to Defend Pax Europaea
DESCRIPTION:After the fall of communism the independent Poland set two strategic goals. Firstly\, to join the western world\, to make transatlantic (NATO) and European (EU) integration the cornerstone of our security and civilizational development. Secondly\, to “build the West in the East”- that means to continue the enlargement process to Ukraine and Belarus. This was perceived as the only way to guarantee the sovereignty of these states and finally bury the imperial ambitions of the Kremlin. As a consequence Poland\, for the first time in history\, would be surrounded by allies who would not pose any threat to its security.\n \n The Russian invasion of Ukraine proved that these goals remain valid. There is no secure Poland without a strong West and a free\, independent Ukraine. At the same time the invasion demonstrated how much the world has changed over the last three decades. The Pax Europaea (which was believed to be eternal) is in mortal danger\, and with that the integrity and the global position of the western world. The outcome of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict will not only determine the security of Poland and freedom of tens of millions of people in Eastern Europe. It will also predestine the future of the West and the global balance of power.\n \n Poland as a front-line state may have a historical role to play in this process. However the significance of Poland will depend on its ability to act not as a peripheral player but as an important partner to the US\, Germany and France. A partner which is able and willing to share responsibility not only for itself but also for the future of the whole Western world.\n\nKatarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz served as the first female Ambassador of Poland to the Russian Federation since the establishment of Polish–Russian relations (2014-16). Previously\, she served as the Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2008 to 2012 she was a member of the Polish Russian Group on Difficult Matters. She graduated from the Institute of Sociology of the University of Warsaw in 1994 and subsequently worked at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She was a deputy director of the Center for Eastern Studies and the head of its Russian Department. She is the author of numerous publications on the systemic transformation in Central-Eastern Europe\, the EU\, and Polish eastern policy.\n\nThis even will be held both in person and webcast via Zoom. Registration is required to attend the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/Qe9Nk.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Other:Incorporation and molecular level consequences of mRNA modifications
DESCRIPTION:Cells face the daunting task of maintaining the right number of proteins\, at the right time\, under rapidly changing conditions. One way that nature accomplishes this is by chemically modifying DNA\, RNA and protein molecules to control their structure\, function\, stability and localization. A single cell possesses thousands of enzymatically modified RNA sites. These modifications have the potential to directly impact protein production\, and disruptions in the RNA modification landscape are associated with an array of diseases including cancers\, neurological diseases\, and diabetes. Nonetheless\, it remains to be discovered how individual sites of modification influence the function of a given RNA. We are working to ascertain how modifications to the molecular blueprints for protein synthesis\, messenger RNAs (mRNAs)\, influence protein production. Our studies have led to the discovery of new mRNA modifications\, reframed the current model for RNA modifying enzyme target selection\, and identified modifications that change the speed and accuracy of protein synthesis. These findings lay the foundation for establishing complex rules governing the molecular level consequences of mRNA modifications.\nKristin Koutmou

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Re-imagining Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nParadigm shifts in technology are needed for next-generation ultrasound imaging. We introduce novel electrostrictive row-column array technology that promises improved 3D image quality and ultrafast imaging speeds. Moreover\, these advances will lead to arrays of unprecedented size and novel form-factors such as endoscopic probes and wearable band-aids that will mitigate operator dependence and lead to longitudinal imaging opportunities. Our technology enables readout from every element of the 2D array using only row and column addressing\, and is well-suited to volumetric photoacoustic imaging using pulsed laser excitation to image optical properties of tissues. Novel agents and genetically-encoded reporters will be introduced. Applications to brain imaging\, cardiovascular medicine\, small animal imaging will be discussed. Furthermore\, a new non-contact all optical form of photoacoustic imaging will be discussed with applications to virtual histology of tissues.\n\nBio:\nRoger Zemp earned his PhD from UC Davis in 2004 and after three years of postdoctoral work in the Laboratory of Prof. Lihong Wang\, joined the Faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2007. He is a recognized international leader in the field of photoacoustic imaging and ultrasound imaging. He has co-founded two startup companies and maintains an active laboratory at the intersection of ultrasound\, optics\, micro-nano-fabrication\, and in vivo imaging. \n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Legendary Drag Queens
DESCRIPTION:\nThis program presents a rare coming together of five legendary Drag Queens from two notoriously fabulous nightclubs in the gritty epicenters of Detroit and San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. This series event brings the San Francisco Aunt Charlie’s Queens together with Detroit’s own reigning Queens from Gigi’s Cabaret\, home of the longest running drag pageant in the United States. Appearing from Detroit are Maxi Chanel (House of Chanel)\, Nickki Stevens\, and Lady T Tempest\, and hailing from San Francisco are Olivia Hart and Donna Personna. The five artists come together to discuss the history of their legacies and artform\, the role of lineage and queer community building\, and how drag has changed the world through activism\, glamour and celebratory inclusion. \nThe evening will be hosted by Ben Johnson\, currently the Arts and Culture Manager for the City of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Previously he was the Director of Performing Arts of the City of Los Angeles and Director of Education and Audience Development at the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan (1996-2008). While in Michigan\, he was steeped in Detroit’s history and lore\, and it is through this lens which he centers drag heritage and history as an important and unique cultural contribution to the vitality of Michigan performing arts history\, aligning it with the equally important and vital history of Aunt Charlies\, the last remaining stronghold of queer and trans-centered cultural space in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.\nPostponed due to Covid and inspired by the Institute for Humanities exhibition of photographer and filmmaker James Hosking’s multimedia project Beautiful by Night\, an examination of class\, labor\, and identity among aging drag performers\, featuring the two San Francisco Queens presented here. The film follows the San Francisco Drag Artists over the course of one night at Aunt Charlie’s\, the last gay bar in the famed San Francisco Tenderloin district\, an area in the process of being completely re-defined by gentrification and the dot-com takeover. James Hosking supports his subjects by sharing their stories and hopes to work towards ironclad non-discrimination laws protecting employment and housing\, and the more truthful representation of this community in both news and entertainment.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making Michigan: To put living force into the symbols: Journeys of Anatol Rapoport
DESCRIPTION:As a boy\, Anatol Rapoport and his father succeeded in a daring escape from the Soviet Union. He went on to become a leading mathematical psychologist\, semanticist and game theorist\, making major contributions to the understanding of strategy\, conflict\, war\, and peace -- always intent on tying strategic analysis to the conscientious appreciation of real human beings. As he wrote at one point\, \"One cannot play chess if one becomes aware of the pieces as living souls . . . .\" Rapoport spent a significant portion of his variegated career at U-M\, where among other things he helped found the Mental Health Research Institute and organize the first Teach-In\, on the Vietnam War. Join us for an exploration of Anatol Rapoport's journeys -- personal and intellectual -- with three panelists: Shirli Kopelman\, leading researcher\, expert\, and educator in the field of negotiations at the U-M Ross School of Business\; Anthony Rapoport\, son of Anatol and principal violist with Sinfonia Toronto and the Windermere Quartet\; and Roger Rapoport\, LSA '68\, award-winning author and filmmaker and author of \"A Professor's War for Peace.\"\n\nThis event will take place at the Detroit Observatory and will also be streamed online. SUMMARY:Performance:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:Vance Gilbert exploded onto the tough Boston songwriting scene in the early 1990s\, with buzz spreading quickly. Who was this multicultural arts teacher knocking them dead at open mics? After opening on Shawn Colvin’s 1992 \"Fat City\" tour\, he took much of America by storm and by surprise. \"With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god\, it was enough to earn him that rarity: an encore for an opener\,\" wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. With 15 critically acclaimed albums\, Vance Gilbert continues to refine his unlikely union of humor\, virtuosity\, and the unexpected. Whether with original songwriting or ageless interpretations of covers\, his is a presentation steeped in deep humanism and bravery\, stunning artistry and soul\, and contagious\, unbridled joy. Vance comes to The Ark with a new album\, \"Good Good Man.\"\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show.
