SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: Public Mural Project
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.\n\nThe public murals will be displayed on Angell Hall\, Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, and MLB.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n*Pressed Against My Own Glass*\, exhibition\, September 15-October 21\, 2022. Location: Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer.\n\nThe exhibition *Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:No Straight Lines: Peculiar Pasts and Crooked Futures
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Eley’s work has fundamentally reframed key questions in the field of German history and lastingly shaped the discipline of history. His work spans centuries and reaches across oceans. The questions he has asked are both pointed and of universal relevance. His contributions witnessed and shaped the many “turns” the discipline of history itself has made. His list of publications spans more pages than the average reading list for preliminary examinations in the field of German history. If one counts the presentations he has given at workshops and conferences one would assume he has lived three lives. As the organizers of this symposium in his honor\, we suggest that the work of Geoff Eley deliberately evades “capture.” Instead of pounding a signpost into the ground and leaving his mark\, Geoff has built bridges between fields and made waves within them\, touching innumerable lives and minds in the process. To ride the waves and travel across these bridges by bringing together some of the many scholars\, colleagues\, students\, and friends that have learned with and from Geoff is the purpose of this symposium.\n\nNo Straight Lines celebrates Geoff Eley’s impressive career\, the breadth\, range and importance of his scholarship\, his spirit as a teacher\, mentor and colleague\, and his life-long commitment to justice\, within and beyond the academy. Starting out as a scholar of German nationalism and the German political right and reframing the “peculiarities” of that history as an emerging young scholar\, Geoff Eley’s work bore the imprint of comparative history\, of thinking with concepts and theories rather than applying them\, of pushing against boundaries that confine “acceptable” ways of thinking about the past\, which he is currently putting into practice again by writing a comprehensive history of 20th Century Europe. Throughout his career\, he has traced and critically reflected on how historical thinking has itself changed as a result of historical processes. No Straight Lines seeks to take stock of and celebrate the extent to which Geoff Eley’s work has in fact been indispensable to the intellectual shifts he has so skillfully traced and succinctly explained.\n\nBesides celebrating the breadth and impact of Geoff Eley’s scholarship\, No Straight Lines seeks to remind us all of the many ways in which his work was never just theoretical but was always connected with and energized by thinkers\, writers\, scholars\, and students\, and in turn\, supported and touched so many of them in lasting ways. In this regard the Saturday dinner is as crucial a part of this symposium\, as is the discussion of Eley’s scholarly footprint. That footprint was never purely abstract\; nor was it only intellectual. Rather it continues to invigorate the many friendships and collaborations he has built and sustained over his career. This symposium brings us together to honor the experience of learning from and with Geoff Eley.\n\nFind more information and the conference schedule here: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/eley/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: \"Pressed Against My Own Glass\" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Data Collection Using Wearables\, Sensors\, and Apps in the Social\, Behavioral\, and Health Sciences - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Data Collection Using Wearables\, Sensors\, and Apps in the Social\, Behavioral\, and Health Sciences\n\nCourse open for registration!\nOpen to all!\n\nSeptember 21-30\, 2022\n11:00am-1:00pm\nWednesdays and Fridays\n\nThe recent proliferation of mobile technology allows researchers to collect objective health and behavioral data at increased intervals\, in real time\, and may also reduce participant burden. In this course\, we will provide examples of the utility of and integration of wearables\, sensors\, and apps in research settings. Examples will include the use of wearable health devices to measure activity\, apps for ecological momentary assessment\, and smartphone sensors to measure sound and movement\, among others. Additionally\, this course will consider the integration of these new technologies into existing surveys and the quality of the data collected from the total survey error perspective. We will discuss considerations for assessing coverage\, participation\, and measurement error when integrating wearables\, sensors\, and apps in a research setting as well as the costs and privacy considerations when collecting these types of data. Participants will work in groups to discuss a research study design using new technology and have the opportunity for hands-on practice with sensor data.\n\nNot for academic credit.\n\nInstructors: Florian Keusch and Heidi Guyer\n\nAll 2022 courses will be held in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Journey of Self-Discovery
DESCRIPTION:To experience an interesting piece of art is to feel ALIVE. It propels one out of reality (for a moment) and transcends the spirit to a special place much like a spiritual awakening.\n\nI am interested in the creative process even more than the final product. The process of art making is therapeutic and one of self-discovery. It is a chance to play like a child and to allay fears/worries and to lose the confines of the world around you. It offers you a chance to dream\, dance and explore unknown worlds.\n\nThis exhibit is mainly focused on this creative process which I call the ‘Journey of Self-Discovery. Each painting has been created according to this process. Mindfulness is the goal.\n\nWe all see things from different angles based on our own individual experiences. I encourage you to look at things from your own perspective – each piece invites you to consider your own viewpoint\, a chance to let go and experience some unique personal other-worldly environments. Enjoy.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods Hour: From the sky to the ground: Using astronomical methods to make progress in psychology and neuroscience
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: At first glance the fields of psychology\, neuroscience and astrophysics are vastly different\, however the disciplines are all similarly concerned with uncovering underlying structures: that govern the behavior of human beings\, the functioning of brains and the physics of objects in the cosmos. In this talk\, I will illustrate how an interdisciplinary perspective can leverage the strengths of astronomical methods to advance and enhance the brain and behavioral sciences. Specifically\, I will describe how astronomical simulation techniques can be used to assess psychological temporal network methods for studying individual differences in learning\, and the process of using astronomical image processing to improve the detection efficiency of neuroscientific synaptic calcium transients in high-resolution microscopy. I close with a consideration of the ways in which centering research methodology can advance interdisciplinary and discipline-specific knowledge.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optogenetic Feedback Control of Gene Expression and Antibiotic Resistance in Single Cells
DESCRIPTION:Cell-to-cell heterogeneity in gene expression can elevate antibiotic resistance in one microbe while other cells remain susceptible. These transient forms of drug resistance are often stochastic and dynamic\, leading to single-cell level differences in resistance that change with time. To date\, methods for quantifying these effects have relied on careful observations of native expression patterns. In this talk\, I will discuss a novel approach for controlling gene expression dynamics in single cells that can be used to precisely drive expression in thousands of cells in parallel. In support of this\, I will discuss our recent advances in automated image processing of time-lapse microscopy data using deep learning models (DeLTA). Once trained\, the DeLTA algorithm requires minimal input from the user and can rapidly segment\, track\, and reconstruct lineages for bacteria growing in microfluidic chips and on two dimensional surfaces. I will also discuss optogenetic control methods that allow us to use light-based feedback to regulate gene expression in real time. Using a combination of deep learning-based models and rapid image analysis\, we can simultaneously control gene expression in thousands of cells in parallel. Together\, these approaches offer powerful methods that can be used to quantify and control cell-to-cell heterogeneity in antibiotic resistance\, providing a detailed view into strategies bacteria can use to evade drug treatment.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:In Process: A Symposium in Honor of Ray Silverman
DESCRIPTION:We invite colleagues\, students\, and members of the community to join us in celebrating Ray Silverman’s retirement from his position as Professor of History of Art\, African Studies\, and Museum Studies with a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. We ask\, what does it mean for the process of collaboration to be an end in itself\, and how might this perspective shift values in the academy and beyond?\n\nThe program will begin on the afternoon of Friday\, September 30 and end late-afternoon on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022. It will be an in-person event taking place in the Helmut Stern Auditorium at the U-M Museum of Art (UMMA).\n \n\nSpeakers:\n\n Kelly Askew\, University of Michigan\n Daniel Berhanemeskel\, artist\n Donald Buaku\, City of Houston\n Geoff Emberling\, University of Michigan\n Robert Glew\, Michigan State University\n Erica Lehrer\, Concordia University\, Montreal\n Allison Martino\, Indiana University\n Prita Meier\, New York University\n Derek Peterson\, University of Michigan\n Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo\, University of Michigan\n Heran Sereke-Brhan\, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities\n Carla Sinopoli\, University of New Mexico\n Neal Sobania\, Pacific Lutheran University

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Investment Analyst Networks and the Similarity of Corporate Behavior
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, organizational scholars have documented the many ways in which contemporary organizations radically differ from their predecessors\, thus rendering obsolete many of our existing ways of categorizing firms. We attempt to overcome this challenge by introducing a new measure to assess the degree of similarity between firms: analyst-based similarity. Publicly- traded firms are routinely covered by one or more sell-side stock analysts. Embedded in these coverage patterns are analyst assignment decisions made by investment banks that consciously aim to reduce information acquisitions costs by assigning analysts to similar sets of firms. Thus\, analyst coverage patterns reflect underlying similarities among firms in the eyes of a key audience for corporate organizations: investment banks and the broader investment community. Leveraging the overlapping coverage patterns of sell-side market analysts\, we create a network- based\, dyadic annual measure of similarity among all publicly traded firms from 1990-2020. We use this measure to predict similarity among a set of corporate decisions and outcomes\, including corporate time horizons\, corporate political activity\, and measures of stakeholder performance.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Parity symmetry breaking scale and Standard Model parameters
DESCRIPTION:The strong CP problem can be solved by parity symmetry. We first review two classes of models: the ones with the minimal fermion content and the ones with the minimal Higgs content. We then focus on the latter class of models and show that the parity symmetry breaking scale is predicted to be the energy scale at which the standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes. Surprisingly\, after fixing the parity symmetry breaking scale in this way\, the gauge coupling constants unify at a high energy scale. We also discuss a model with a dark matter candidate and show that the dark matter direct detection rate is predicted as a function of the standard model parameters.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Athena Eyster\, University of Wisconsin-Madison
DESCRIPTION:Oxygen is crucial for life on Earth today\, with oxygen’s first major rise ~2.4-2.0 billion years ago during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) argued to have been a turning point for planetary habitability. Furthermore\, the subsequent trajectories of atmospheric and marine oxygen after this initial rise are critical for clarifying linkages between oxygenation and the evolution of complex life. Importantly\, massive iron formations have long been recognized as uniquely sensitive to marine oxygen levels and so form critical archives of early Earth’s oceans. Yet their relationship to marine oxygenation is complicated by uncertainties in the triggers for deposition\, which are particularly striking when examining massive iron deposits after the GOE. To help address these issues\, I present new geologic and geochronologic results from the Ironwood Iron Formation and Emperor Volcanics near Lake Superior. Synthesis of these new regional constraints with a revised compilation of existing data creates a global perspective that allows critical assessment of the marine conditions that trigger post-GOE massive iron deposition and the factors influencing the trajectory of marine oxygen.

SUMMARY:Performance:Connecting Currents - Women of the Rivers
DESCRIPTION:Connecting Currents: Women of the Rivers is an artistic exploration inspired by the healing properties of water: reflection\, release\, and restoration. This production examines the impacts of water on the “brown” feminine mind\, body\, and spirit. The experience features dance\, poetry\, audience participation\, vendors\, live music from Monica Blaire\, Class Act Band\, DJ Medusa and more.\n\nWater has impacted people of the African Diaspora for centuries. From the transatlantic slave trade\, whites only swimming pools of the Jim Crow\, the use of water hoses to subdue peaceful protestors during the Civil Rights Era\, and recently with residential water shut offs and the ongoing Flint water crisis\; water has been the involuntary contributor to separation\, distress and hardship for many people of the African Diaspora. Inspired by the healing properties of water—reflection\, release\, and restoration—Connecting Currents: Women of the Rivers is an interdisciplinary interactive experience that promotes an ecological and spiritual reconciliation and reconnection with water and one another starting with the community surrounding the Detroit River. What better location to encourage reconciliation with people of the African Diaspora than the river which many formerly enslaved Africans crossed to freedom.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Olin Downes and the Soviets\, or American Music after the Bolshevik Revolution” - Dr. Kevin Bartig\, Michigan State University
DESCRIPTION:“Olin Downes and the Soviets\, or American Music after the Bolshevik Revolution”\n\nIn 1929 and 1932\, the long-serving and influential New York Times music critic Olin Downes embarked on extended tours of the Soviet Union. During these visits\, Downes attended performances\, evaluated new compositions\, and consulted with cultural bureaucrats on the state of Soviet musical culture. As the first prominent US music critic to visit the Soviet Union since the Bolshevik Revolution\, Downes understood that his first-hand observer status bestowed a transnationally constructed authority that allowed him to make big and often highly tendentious claims about what he saw and heard. In this presentation\, I follow Downes on these tours to show that these claims were not simply pro- or anti-Bolshevik reactions but were in fact intertwined with a much deeper agenda: Downes’s desire to foster a middlebrow\, national art music at home in the United States. Ultimately\, Downes’s interest in the Soviet Union was brief\, but his experience there shaped his nationalist agenda for American music for years to come. This chapter of Downes’s career is crucial to understanding both how the Soviet experiment shaped discourse around American music and how US opinion on Soviet culture took shape during the interwar years. \n\n\nDr. Kevin Bartig\, professor and chair of musicology at Michigan State University\, has written widely on Russian and Soviet music. His books include Composing for the Red Screen: Prokofiev and Soviet Film (2013) and Sergei Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky” (2017). Other publications explore musical diplomacy\, audio- visual aesthetics\, and the reception of Russian music in various contexts. With theater historian Dassia Posner\, he coedited Three Loves for Three Oranges: Gozzi\, Meyerhold\, Prokofiev (2021). He has also contributed to several edited collections\, including Prokofiev and His World\, Sound\, Speech\, Music in Soviet and Post-Soviet Cinema\, and The Rite of Spring at 100\, which won the 2018 AMS Ruth A. Solie Award. At Michigan State\, Dr. Bartig received the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award in 2010.

SUMMARY:Sporting Event:Panel Discussion and Book Launch for “Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined” with special guests Marilyn Chin\, Lynn Love\, and Wendy Vogel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with artist and U-M Stamps Professor Heidi\nKumao\, Stamps Gallery Director\, Srimoyee Mitra\, and special guests: poet Marilyn\nChin\, writer Lynn Love\, and art critic Wendy Vogel as they discuss Kumao’s\nnarrative fabric works and animations and the future of feminist praxis in art\nand contemporary culture. A public Q&amp\;A and book-signing will follow the\ndiscussion.\n \nThe book “Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined” features narrative\nfabric works and animations from a solo exhibition that was held at the Stamps\nGallery in Fall 2020. The exhibition was inspired by the courage\, testimony\,\nand experiences of women (like Christine Blasey Ford) who publicly report\nassault\, harassment\, or misconduct. The #MeToo movement gave voice to\nthousands of women to tell their personal stories\, but also exposed a hostile\nbacklash meant to silence them. The title\, “Real and Imagined\,” is a\ndeliberate contradiction: both terms are used to reference a woman’s testimony\nand determine how it is publicly interpreted. Her account is accepted as\ntruthful by many and simultaneously dismissed as imaginary by the court of\npublic opinion: “her memory is wrong\,” “she imagined\nit.” \nCopies of the book “Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined” will be\navailable for purchase at the event. Virtual options for event attendance are\navailable. Please contact Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan at jenjkhan@umich.edu for more information. \n\n\nThe book “Heidi Kumao: Real and Imagined” is designed by Franc\nNunoo-Quarcoo.
