DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.\n\nThe public murals will be displayed on Angell Hall\, Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, and MLB.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n*Pressed Against My Own Glass*\, exhibition\, September 15-October 21\, 2022. Location: Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer.\n\nThe exhibition *Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

Prohibition of abortions sought based on the fetus’ sex\, known as sex-selective abortion bans (SSABs)\, are often overlooked in these endeavors. While abortion laws are not traditionally associated with immigration\, advocates for sex-selection bans explicitly invoke invidious xenophobic stereotypes about Asian immigrants and their alleged penchant for aborting female babies because of a cultural preference for sons. This paper explores the potential health consequences of such policies. Examining 2005–2019 natality data from the National Vital Statistics System using a triple-difference strategy\, we find that SSABs had a negative effect on Asian immigrant infant birth outcomes—specifically\, birth weight and gestational age. We argue that the successful enactment of SSABs helped amplify a negative social climate in which anti-Asian stereotypes and sentiments became more salient in Asian immigrants’ everyday lives. We thereby advance the concept of structural stigma in the argument that social policies can amplify negative health effects for vulnerable minorities by fostering an environment that deepens their stigmatized status.

DESCRIPTION:Progress in particle physics research comes from the connection of physics motivation to high energy experiments. Several key mysteries such as the nature of dark matter and fine tuning in the Higgs mass underline the need for new physics at the TeV scale\, and the Large Hadron Collider provides an essential probe for discovery in this regime. This talk focuses on novel LHC searches in unexplored phase space\, specifically long-lived particles and anomaly detection\, along with the associated challenges of such analyses and ways to address them via creative new tools. The High Luminosity LHC\, the corresponding ATLAS detector upgrade\, and studies for future colliders are all crucial for the longevity of these searches. These topics are discussed in the context of long-term planning for future experiments and the continued success of the field.\n

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Lisa Alvarez-Cohen will be the lecturer for CEE’s 2022 Richart/Woods Distinguished Lecture on Monday\, October 3. The event will be held in the LEC Johnson Rooms from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.\, followed by a reception in Masco Commons.\n\nProf. Alvarez-Cohen is the Vice Provost for Academic Planning and the Fred and Claire Sauer Professor of Environmental Engineering\, UC Berkeley. Faculty and Postdocs should remind students they are welcomed to attend the lecture and reception.\n\nBiology of emerging contaminants - do they really eventually emerge?\n\nABSTRACT\nSocietal demand for new products promotes the production and release of new chemicals. Additionally\, population growth and climate change has produced increased demand on water resources\, resulting in greater reliance on direct and indirect water reuse. Advances in analytical chemistry enables us to detect environmental contaminants with increasing sensitivity\, allowing us to discover new families of emerging contaminants that threaten our water resources. Understanding the biotransformation potential of emerging contaminants has been a challenge that’s been greatly assisted recently by means of molecular tools. This talk will describe lessons-learned and research aimed at discovering the biodegradation potential and pathways for a variety of important “emerging contaminants\,\" including MTBE\, I\,4-dioxane\, NDMA\, PBDEs and aqueous film forming foams (AFFF).\n\nSPEAKER BIO\nLisa Alvarez-Cohen is the Vice Provost for Academic Planning\, the Fred and Claire Sauer Professor of Environmental Engineering\, and the past-Chair of the Faculty Senate at UC Berkeley. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and Applied Science from Harvard University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science from Stanford University.\n\nHer research areas include biotransformation and fate of environmental water contaminants\, environmental microbiology and ecology\, bioremediation\, biological wastewater nutrient removal\, and application of molecular and isotopic techniques for studying environmental microbial communities. She has coauthored the textbook Environmental Engineering Science. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. She has won a number of awards including the China 1\,000 Talents National Award\, the ASCE Simon W. Freese Environmental Engineering Award\, the W.M. Keck Foundation Award for Engineering Teaching Excellence\, and the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Welfare or Unfair? Estimating Marginal Utility of Income From Willingness to Pay Conditional on Ability to Pay
DESCRIPTION:This paper provides and implements a method to estimate the expected marginal utility of income across observable traits like income. Good policy analysis tries to match people to the policy that best fits their normative beliefs. In a welfarist framework this requires knowing something about the marginal utility of income\, but despite over a century of effort\, economics has not agreed upon a method for estimating utility. The key assumption for my method is that the marginal utility of pain relief is independent from a person's income. While the utility I estimate may not actually be marginal well-being or happiness\, it is the marginal utility implied by standard economic assumptions that justify using willingness to pay as a measure of welfare. Surprisingly\, I find the implied marginal utility of income does not change across income. This result suggests that more research is needed to properly interpret policy analysis using willingness to pay.

DESCRIPTION:Patient‐provider mismatch\, late cancelations\, frequent rescheduling\, and no‐shows result in long delays in getting specialty care appointments\, higher costs\, and more importantly\, poor health outcomes. We propose an intelligent patient access management system that uses existing clinical and transactional data to ensure that the right patient sees the right provider at the right time. To that end\, we developed a software platform referred to as Priority‐Driven Patient Access Tool (PDPAT). PDPAT allows clinical departments to define their patient prioritization schema based on medical indication and other patient characteristics and makes various appointment itinerary suggestions to appointment coordinators for optimal scheduling. PDPAT dynamically reserves capacity for high‐priority patients while delaying lower‐priority patient through so‐called scheduling time windows. The time window for each priority group are optimized based on \n1) patient mix targets set by the practice and \n2) empirically estimated patient willingness‐to‐wait (WtW) behavior. \nA pilot study at a surgical division resulted in reduced access time and increased throughput\, due to better coordination of clinic and surgical calendars. The talk will also introduce a framework\, which we refer to as Human‐AI dynamic dual mode\, to develop a patient prioritization protocol through continuous collaboration between algorithms and human experts.\nMustafa Y. Sir\, Ph.D.\, is a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon’s Health Services organization. He is an experienced leader managing multi‐disciplinary applied science teams to develop and implement innovative healthcare solutions for improving operational efficiency\, cost‐effectiveness\, and health outcomes. He has expertise in optimization and decision sciences\, including large‐scale and multi-objective optimization and reinforcement learning. He also has 10+ years of hands‐on experience in developing measurement methods\, predictive and prescriptive analytic and machine learning solutions for data‐driven decision‐making. Prior to Amazon\, he worked at Mayo Clinic focusing on developing clinical decision support systems using complex health data from sensors and electron‐ ic medical records. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2007.\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U‐M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi‐disciplinary\, systems‐engineering approach.\nA zoom option will also be provided to those who RSVP.

DESCRIPTION:Sign up for a free series of self-defense workshops!\n\nAiming to equip the incoming students with the skills to increase their self-confidence and preparedness for the unexpected\, the Engineering Student Government (ESG) in partnership with UofM Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS) is setting out with a newly established SaferSelf project. Starting on September 12th and running until October 10th a series of free empowerment self-defense workshops will be held weekly on Mondays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Central Campus (exact location TBD).\n\nEmpowerment self-defense sessions explore the culture of violence\, and teach concrete but practical effective skills for personal safety and physical self defense in a wide variety of contexts ranging from harassment to sexual assault. Participants will be able to:\n- understand how situational awareness can deter or prevent an attack.\n- use verbal skills for assertive communication.\n- evade and set boundaries (verbal & physical).\n- use practical options to make ourselves more comfortable when uncomfortable situations occur.\n- recognize and interrupt unwanted behavior when in social situations\, interpersonal/intimate relationships as well as interactions with strangers.\n\nThe series will be composed of the following workshops:\n1. Introduction to physical self-defense: 1.5hr\n2. Physical self-defense with strikes and kicks with pads: 1hr\n3. Physical self-defense with boxing element combination striking: 1h\n4. Top-to-bottom pressure points: 1hr\n5. Physical self-defense from the ground: 1hr\n\nFace masks will be required regardless of vaccination status.\n\nThe space in the program is limited\, and last spots are available.
