SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: Public Mural Project
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.\n\nThe public murals will be displayed on Angell Hall\, Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, and MLB.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n*Pressed Against My Own Glass*\, exhibition\, September 15-October 21\, 2022. Location: Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer.\n\nThe exhibition *Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Advances in AI for Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Come join MIDAS and invited presenters for a series of talks on AI and Sustainability. This event is free and remote.\nWhile infrastructure\, both static and dynamic\, is the driver of modern global economy\, it is also a significant contributor towards global climate change due to the increased emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) provides a radical framework for mitigating emissions by improving efficiency in static infrastructure\, as well as enhancing mobility in transportation through low-carbon transport options and reduction in overall travel time. Through this mini-colloquium\, we hope to bring together researchers from varied fields employing AI on these strategies.\n\nOur speakers for the event are:\n\nDr. Felix Creutzig (https://www.mcc-berlin.net/en/about/team/creutzig-felix.html) - Prof. Dr. Felix Creutzig is head of the working group Land Use\, Infrastructures and Transport and Chair of Sustainability Economics at Technische Universität Berlin. He was lead author of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report and lead analyst of the Global Energy Assessment. His research focuses on conceptualizing and quantifying GHG emissions of cities world-wide\, assessing opportunities for GHG mitigation of cities world-wide and building models of sustainable urban form and transport. \n\nDr. Lynn Kaack (https://www.hertie-school.org/en/research/faculty-and-researchers/profile/person/kaack) - Dr. Kaack is Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School. Her research and teaching focus on methods from statistics and machine learning to inform climate mitigation policy across the energy sector\, and she also has an interest in climate-related AI policy. She is a co-founder and chair of the organization Climate Change AI\, and a member of the Austrian Council on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence\, which is an advisory board of the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action. \n\nPriya L. Donti (https://priyadonti.com/) - Ms. Donti is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Computer Science Department and the Department of Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University\, co-advised by Zico Kolter and Inês Azevedo. She is also a co-founder and chair of Climate Change AI\, an initiative to catalyze impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. Her work focuses on machine learning for forecasting\, optimization\, and control in high-renewables power grids. Specifically\, her research explores methods to incorporate the physics and hard constraints associated with electric power systems into deep learning models.\n\nDr. Moataz Mohamed (https://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/civil/people/faculty/moataz-mohamed#overview) - Dr. Mohamed’s research focuses on the systemic evaluation of transportation networks to achieve sustainable and resilient transportation systems. SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | The Anatomy of Loneliness: Suicide\, Social Connection\, and the Search for Relational Meaning in Contemporary Japan
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/G1JDR\n\nLoneliness has been increasingly recognized as one of the greatest public health threat and this talk examines what is and is not loneliness\, conditions of the “lonely society” and the role of culture in loneliness. Based on my long-term ethnographic studies\, I point to how society itself can exacerbate experiences of loneliness. One of the most important messages of this talk is that the anatomy of loneliness is not the anatomy of a single individual\, but of a type of society.\n \n Chikako Ozawa-de Silva\, D.Phil.\, is a Professor of Anthropology at Emory University. She came to Emory after serving as a Visiting Research Fellow at Harvard University’s Department of Social Medicine and as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago. She is a NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) grant recipient and a Mind and Life Contemplative Studies Fellowship (The John Templeton Foundation) recipient. Her academic vision is to contribute to cross-cultural understandings of health\, illness and well-being by bringing Western and Asian perspectives on the mind-body\, religion\, medicine\, and therapy into fruitful dialogue. Her publications include two monographs\, The Anatomy of Loneliness: Suicide\, Social Connection and the Search for Relational Meaning in Contemporary Japan (University of California Press\, 2021) and Psychotherapy and Religion in Japan: The Japanese Introspection Practice of Naikan (Routledge\, 2006)\, as well as a co-edited special issue “Toward an Anthropology of Loneliness” in Transcultural Psychiatry (57:5\, 2020\, co-edited with Michelle Parsons)\, and over twenty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on psychotherapeutic practice\, suicide\, the mind-body relationship and Tibetan medicine. For the past ten years her research has focused on loneliness\, empathy\, meaning-making\, subjectivity and resilience\, particularly among populations at risk for suicide\, in situations of domestic violence\, and in prison\, in Japan and the US.\n\nThis lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminar | The Memory Effect and Infrared Divergences in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity
DESCRIPTION:*Please note Special day and time: Thursday at Noon*\n\nAbstract: The \"memory effect\" refers to the fact that at order 1/r\, a massless field generically will not return to the same value at asymptotically late retarded times as it had at asymptotically early retarded times. There is nothing singular about states with memory in quantum field theory\, but they do not lie in the standard Fock space and infrared divergences will arise as artifacts of trying to represent states with memory in the standard Fock space. As a practical matter\, if one is interested only in quantities directly relevant to collider physics\, one can deal with infrared divergences by well defined procedures for obtaining \"inclusive quantities\,\" but this is clearly unsatisfactory from a fundamental viewpoint on scattering theory. For QED with massive charged particles\, Faddeev and Kulish gave a construction of \"in\" and \"out\" Hilbert spaces that incorporates memory (via the \"dressing\" of the charged particles) and thereby provides a well defined scattering theory. However\, we show that this construction fails in massless QED (because the required dressing is highly singular) and fails in (nonlinear) quantum gravity (because\, in essence\, the dressing would require its own further dressing and there is no self-consistent way of accomplishing this). We believe that if one wishes to treat scattering at a fundamental level in quantum gravity—as well as in massless QED and Yang-Mills theory—it is necessary to approach it from an algebraic viewpoint o

Within and across ethnoracial groups\, skin color affects life experiences\, including one’s financial earnings\, educational opportunities\, health outcomes\, exposure to discrimination\, interactions with the criminal justice system\, and sense of group belonging. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reconsidering reparations: Building on existing models in college access and home ownership
DESCRIPTION:Policymakers have struggled with how to reduce long-standing inequalities based on race. Recently there have been calls for reparations with many innovative ideas. While policymakers debate how to implement these suggestions\, there are many promising approaches to college access and home ownership that already exist\, which accomplish some of the same goals. Prof. Trina Shanks will discuss baby bonds\, child savings accounts\, promise scholarships\, and various home ownership incentive programs in progress\, and how they could make a real difference in the lives of low to moderate income families.

SUMMARY:Presentation:ChE SEMINAR: “The Catalytic Science of Making Up and Breaking Up Dinitrogen”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nABSTRACT:\nThe catalytic chemistry of nitrogen is inextricably linked with mankind’s use of energy. Large scale nitrogen fixation (N2 → NH3) revolutionized the production of fertilizer\, enabled the population explosion of the 20th century\, and now consumes several percent of the world’s energy annually production. NOx reduction (NOx → N2) is integral to reducing the adverse impacts of transportation on urban air quality and health. These and other technologies all depend at their heart on heterogeneous catalysis. In this presentation I will discuss the insights gained by applying molecular-level models and concepts to nitrogen catalytic chemistry. Examples will be drawn from our work on the selective catalytic reduction of NOx in Cu-exchanged zeolites\, a problem that has led us to rethink the factors that govern reactivity in zeolites\, from NO and NH3 oxidation\, problems that have caused us to revisit how we model reactions at metal surfaces\, and from N2 reduction\, where we are exploring the potential to bypass the constraints presented by common catalysts by combining with a non-thermal plasma. \n\nBIO:\nBill Schneider’s expertise is in chemical applications of density functional theory (DFT) simulations. After receiving his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the Ohio State University\, he began his professional career in the Ford Motor Company Research Laboratory working on a variety of problems related to the environmental impacts of automobile emissions. At Ford he developed an interest in the catalytic chemistry of NOx for diesel emissions control\, and he has published extensively on the chemistry and mechanisms of NOx decomposition\, selective catalytic reduction\, trapping\, and oxidation catalysis. In 2004 he joined the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering faculty at the University of Notre Dame as an Associate Professor. At Notre Dame he has continued his research into the theory and molecular simulation of heterogeneous catalysis\, with particular emphasis on reaction environment effects on catalytic materials and their implications for mechanism and reactivity. He was named the H. Clifford and Evelyn A. Brosey Chair in 2016 and Dorini Family Chair and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2020. He has co-authored more than 185 papers and book chapters\, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an Executive Editor of The Journal of Physical Chemistry.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:899 Seminar Series: Myrtede Alfred\, Assistant Professor at U Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Title: Investigating Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Maternal Health Outcomes at the Health System Level\n\nPregnancy-related deaths and severe maternal morbidity (SMM) are increasing in the United States\, with racial/ethnic disparities in outcomes for women of color persisting for decades. Both poor overall maternal health outcomes and disparities are attributable to a broad range of socioeconomic factors as well as differences in the quality of care provided by individual health systems. An estimated sixty percent of all pregnancy-related deaths and SMM cases are considered preventable with timely and appropriate care. Limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms that result in poorer quality of care for women of color represent a major impediment to advancing equity in maternal care. In addition to implicit bias\, prior research suggests inequities can be designed into healthcare through the use of biased clinical decision support algorithms\, discriminatory processes and policies\, and integration of unreliable biomedical technology. As these factors can directly lead to disparate outcomes in maternal care and other clinical areas\, health systems must take an active role improving equity in care. However\, characterizing and alleviating inequities in clinical care is difficult due to the lack of a well-defined conceptual model to facilitate investigation\, limited or lack of accessible race/ethnicity data\, and insensitive equity measures. Using maternal health disparities as the paradigm\, my research applies sociotechnical systems analysis approaches to uncover embedded inequities in clinical systems\, and analyze and monitor disparities in outcomes. My research also uses human-centered and participatory design approaches to support the redesign of clinical systems for equitable care. This work exemplifies the type of multilevel effort needed to eliminate health disparities at both the population and health system levels.\n\nBio: Myrtede Alfred is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Toronto. She directs the Safety\, Equity\, & Design (SĒD) Lab which conducts patient safety research in several area\, including CPR feedback efficacy\, application of extended reality in patient education\, and retained foreign objects. Her research also leverage sociotechnical systems analysis approaches to examine clinical system contributions to healthcare disparities. Prior to joining University of Toronto\, Dr. Alfred was a research assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina where she spent three years applying her expertise to improve the delivery of care in the hospital through both research and practice. She worked closely with the risk and patient safety teams and conducted direct observation on medical floors\, intensive care units\, and operating rooms. Dr. Alfred has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and has given eight invited talks. Her research has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)\, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)\, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Alfred obtained her PhD in industrial engineering from Clemson University (2017) where she held the Southern Regional Education Board Dissertation and the Janine Bowen Graduate Fellowships and earned multiple awards for teaching and outreach\, including the MLK Jr. Excellence in Service Award. Beyond academic research\, Dr. Alfred leads her STEAM education nonprofit\, Marie’s Kids\, in North Charleston\, South Carolina.\n\nThe Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend. There will be a reception to follow the seminars in the IOE commons from 4 -5 p.m

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:\"Sources of Background in Space-based Mass Spectrometers\"\nThis seminar will examine various aspects of tornadoes and hail\, including: spatio-temporal trends\, changes in exposure\, sub-seasonal prediction\, and projected impacts of climate change. Dr. Gensini's research umbrella covers extreme weather and climate\, with specific interests focused on: severe convective storms\, synoptic/mesoscale meteorology\, applied climatology\, GIS techniques\, geoscience data visualization\, weather forecasting and climate change. My research has primarily focused on the relationship between severe convective storms and climate change by utilizing dynamical downscaling from a convective permitting regional climate model. Currently\, a majority of my research is examining weather and climate dynamics that explain variability in extreme weather (e.g.\, hail\, tornadoes\, heavy rain\, heat waves) frequency and analyzing ways to forecast these events at sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A league of universal monarchies – recontextualising Rome in world history
DESCRIPTION:In person: 2175 Angell Hall\, Classical Studies Library\nOnline\, Zoom webinar registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5XYfunWrRCSTaWxuGKmojw \n\nSummary: This paper sets out in search of a new world history context for Rome. Traditionally world history was seen as a function of European history\, leaving most of the world standing idle on the side-line. This view has long since collapsed\, but a new image of world history has yet to take its place. While the Roman Empire nested snuggly in a story that saw history progress through stages of European development\, from antiquity till the present\, its position was nevertheless characterised by a paradox. From A European perspective\, Rome\, the pan-Mediterranean empire\, was an anomaly\, an exception. But\, while Rome the universal empire find few parallels in later European history\, dominated by middling-sized states\, it fits into a wider and dynamic comparative history of grand imperial monarchies\, ranging across the pre-industrial Afro-Eurasian world. This is the new world history context against which we should explore the Greco-Roman experience. \n\nPeter Fibiger Bang\, PhD (Cantab)\, Dr. Phil (Haf) is Associate Professor at the Saxo Institute (history)\, University of Copenhagen. He has worked extensively on Roman economic and comparative imperial history. Among his many books are: The Roman Bazaar (CUP 2008)\, Universal Empire (co-edited with D. Kolodziejczyk\, CUP 2012) and most recently The Oxford World History of Empire\, 2 vols. (co-edited with C. A. Bayly & W. Scheidel\, OUP 2021)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture | The Horrors of Adana: Revolution and Violence in the Early Twentieth Century
DESCRIPTION:This hybrid event will be held in person on Thursday\, October 6th in Weiser Hall 555. It will also be available to attend via zoom using the following link: http://umich.zoom.us/j/98887893758 or by entering the Meeting ID: 988 8789 3758.\n \nIn April 1909\, two waves of massacres shook the province of Adana\, located in the southern Anatolia region of modern-day Turkey\, killing more than 20\,000 Armenians and 2\,000 Muslims. The central Ottoman government failed to prosecute the main culprits\, a miscarriage of justice that would have repercussions for years to come. Despite the significance of these events and the extent of violence and destruction\, the Adana Massacres are often left out of historical narratives. The Horrors of Adana offers one of the first close examinations of these events\, analyzing sociopolitical and economic transformations that culminated in a cataclysm of violence. Bedross Der Matossian provides voice and agency to all involved in the massacres—perpetrators\, victims\, and bystanders. Drawing on primary sources in a dozen languages\, he develops an interdisciplinary approach to understand the rumors and emotions\, public spheres and humanitarian interventions that together informed this complex event. Ultimately\, through consideration of the Adana Massacres in micro-historical detail\, this book offers an important macrocosmic understanding of ethnic violence\, illuminating how and why ordinary people can become perpetrators.\n \nBedross Der Matossian is the Vice-Chair\, Associate Professor of Modern Middle East History\, and Hymen Rosenberg Professor in Judaic studies at the Department of History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Born and raised in East Jerusalem\, he is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed his PhD in Middle East History at Columbia University in 2008. He has taught at MIT and the University of Chicago. He is the editor of the series Armenians in the Modern and Early Modern World (I.B.Tauris and Bloomsbury Press). He is the author\, editor\, and co-editor of multiple books including the award-winning book Shattered Dreams of Revolution: From Liberty to Violence in the Late Ottoman Empire (Stanford\, California: Stanford University Press\, 2014). He is the president of the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Monuments Removed: Colonial-Era Statues in the Era of Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:When India and Pakistan became independent\, the urban landscape was marked by several hundred monumental statues to British military officials\, viceroys\, governors-general\, and members of the royal family that had marked Britain’s colonial occupation. Sculpted by some of the most acclaimed British artists of the Royal Academy\, the statues represented British public art as well as the empire’s public history. The removal of these statues in the 1950s and 1960s occasioned heated debates about the disruption of history\, and in particular\, a disruption of Britain’s history in South Asia. \n\nDurba Ghosh is professor of history and affiliated with Asian Studies and Feminist\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Cornell. She is the author of Gentlemanly Terrorists: Political Violence and the Colonial State in India\, 1919-1947 (2017)\; Sex and the Family in Colonial India: the making of empire (2006) and with Dane Kennedy\, the co-editor of Decentring Empire: Britain\, India and the Transcolonial World (2006). This talk is part of a new project about colonial monuments and their afterlives in South Asia.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Towards a digital lung for medical research and applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nRespiratory infections and chronic diseases have been among the top causes of death worldwide for decades\, killing over 8 million people annually. Current diagnostic methods for respiratory diseases result in late diagnosis and high rates of underdiagnosis. Further\, the wide variability in the patient response to treatment challenges population-based therapies. Personalized medicine arises as a promising alternative to standard practice\, but it relies on expensive laboratory and testing infrastructure not available worldwide. This motivates the creation of computational models of the human lungs for in silico research and applications.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present our group's efforts to construct computational models of the lung for medical research and applications. I will review how computer simulations of alveolar structures informed by micro-computed tomography can change our current understanding of the forces acting on the lung extracellular matrix (ECM). Further\, I will discuss a class of microstructurally informed models for predicting the lung tissue response and how they can capture mechanical changes in lung mechanics triggered by ECM remodeling. Finally\, I will show our current work on creating personalized virtual lungs and how we can use them to simulate the response of patients under respiratory failure that are connected to mechanical ventilation.\n\nBio:\nDaniel E. Hurtado is an associate professor with the School of Engineering at PUC Chile\, and a visiting professor at the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science at MIT. He leads the Computational Medicine Group\, an interdisciplinary team that focuses on the creation of personalized computational replicas of the human lungs\, with applications in the study of mechanical ventilation and early diagnosis of pulmonary diseases. His work also involves the development of wearable respiratory systems to monitor breathing in athletes and hospital patients. \n\nProf. Hurtado received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the California Institute of Technology as a Fulbright fellow. His thesis work made him the recipient of the Robert J. Melosh Medal\, presented by Duke University. In 2018\, the World Economic Forum selected him as one of the 50 most influential young scientists worldwide under 40 years old for his contributions in research and innovation in biomedical engineering. He is also an elected member for the World Council of Biomechanics.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Haas Brothers: Merging Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:Experience the world of boundary-defying artist designers the Haas Brothers\, Simon and Nikolai Haas\, as they discuss their clever\, imaginative\, and fantasy-filled creations. Playful and at times irreverent\, they explore aesthetic themes related to nature\, science fiction\, sexuality\, and psychedelia. As their practice has developed\, they moved from thinking about functionality first to “start[ing] with emotional content\,” Simon stated. Their inventive use of materials ranges from copper\, porcelain and fur\, to technical resins and polyurethane. Since founding the Haas Brothers in 2010\, twin brothers Nikolai and Simon have spurned arbitrary artistic boundaries and hierarchies\, creating a playful and provocative world that merges art\, fashion\, film\, music\, and design. \nIn 2013\, The Haas Brothers began to collaborate with Monkeybiz\, a South African women&#039\;s collective known for their beadwork and who also have branded themselves the Haas Sisters. The Haas Brothers have also established a partnership with a group of women from Lost Hills\, California\, a small agricultural town with limited employment opportunities for women to facilitate the opportunity for the women to learn beadwork skills and now employ them for their beadwork creations.\nTheir first solo museum show opened in Miami Beach at the Bass Museum of Art in 2019 and their work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. In 2019\, they were the recipients of the Arison Award given by the YoungArts Foundation. Most recently\, their exhibition\, Constant Carnival: The Haas Brothers in Context\, was on view at the Katonah Museum of Art in 2022. They are represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York\, and they live and work in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Raquel Gutiérrez
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA's Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nRaquel Gutiérrez is an arts critic/writer\, poet and educator. Born and raised in Los Angeles Gutiérrez credits the queer and feminist DIY post-punk 'zine culture of the 1990s plus Los Angeles County and Getty paid arts internships with introducing her/them to the various vibrant art & music scenes and communities throughout Southern California. Gutiérrez is a 2021 recipient of the Rabkin Prize in Arts Journalism\, as well as a 2017 recipient of the The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Her/Their writing has recently appeared in or is forthcoming in *Art In America*\, NPR Music\, *Places Journal*\, and *The Georgia Review*. Gutiérrez teaches in the Oregon State University-Cascades Low Residency Creative Writing MFA Program. Gutiérrez calls Tucson\, Arizona home.\n\nPart butch memoir\, part ekphrastic travel diary\, part queer family tree\, Raquel Gutiérrez’s debut essay collection *Brown Neon* (Coffee House Press\, 2022) considers what it means to be a Latinx artist during the Trump era\, and gleans insight from the sediment of land and relationships. For Gutiérrez\, terrain is essential to understanding that no story\, no matter how personal\, is separate from the space where it unfolds. Whether contemplating the value of adobe as both vernacular architecture and commodified art object\, highlighting the feminist wounding and transphobic apparitions haunting the multi-generational lesbian social fabric\, or recalling a failed romance\, Gutiérrez traverses complex questions of gender\, class\, identity\, and citizenship with curiosity and nuance.\n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Diaper changing tables are available in nearby restrooms. Gender-inclusive restrooms are available on the second floor of the Museum\, accessible via the stairs\, or in nearby Hatcher Graduate Library (Floors 3\, 4\, 5\, and 6). ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email asbates@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor). SUMMARY:Presentation:Discovering a Forgery: Jupiter's real moons and U-M's fake Galileo manuscript
DESCRIPTION:In 1610\, Galileo Galilei made a revolutionary discovery: moons orbiting Jupiter. One of the first astronomical discoveries made using a telescope\, this event was critical to reshaping human understanding of the cosmos. Galileo drafted notes on his observations of the moons\, for later publication in a work called the Sidereus Nuncius. In 1938\, in a meeting that took place at U-M's Detroit Observatory\, that draft was gifted to the University\, becoming a treasured holding of the University Library. Or so everyone long believed. Now\, thanks to the work of historian Nicholas Wilding\, and the collaboration of U-M librarian Pablo Alvarez\, the University's \"Galileo Manuscript\" has been exposed as a 20th-century forgery. Join us at the Detroit Observatory for discussion with Wilding and Alvarez of the purported significance of the manuscript\, how its authenticity came to be questioned\, and what went into the determination that it was a fake. The manuscript itself will be on display as part of this event\, as will be the Library's copy of the first edition of Sidereus Nuncius. Following the panel\, weather permitting\, we will observe Jupiter and its Galilean moons using a telescope similar in size and power to the one Galileo used and using the historic 12.5\" Fitz refracting telescope in the Observatory's dome.\n\nNick Wilding is professor of history at Georgia State University and a scholar of early modern Europe\, history of science\, and book forgery. Pablo Alvarez is curator in the Library's Special Collections Research Center and a specialist in pre-1700 manuscripts and printed books.
