SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: Public Mural Project
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh.\n\nThe public murals will be displayed on Angell Hall\, Shapiro Undergraduate Library\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, and MLB.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n*Pressed Against My Own Glass*\, exhibition\, September 15-October 21\, 2022. Location: Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S. Thayer.\n\nThe exhibition *Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:The Ways of Water: Art\, Activism\, and Ecologies Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the\nfoundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a\nlife force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Despite this fact\, or\nperhaps because of it\, water is highly politicized\, used as a weapon\, tool\,\ninspiration\, and muse. Water is a vital life source that holds (and\ngenerates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been\ncommodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and\nFond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines\nthreaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying\nColorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the\nFlint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the\nsustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires\nintersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion\nand action to protect. \nThe symposium brings together a diverse group of practitioners\,\nincluding artists\, designers\, activists\, scholars\, scientists\, policy analysts\,\nurban planners\, and thinkers to discuss what may well be the most important\nissue of our time: access to clean water and the fight for environmental\njustice. Held in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art and building on themes present in the UMMA exhibition Watershed and Stamps Gallery&#039\;s LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint is Family in Three Acts\, The Ways of Water symposium continues to unravel the story of water\, its critical role\,\nand the way it connects us all. \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts details the destructive forces of industry\,\nlax regulation on the environment and aging infrastructure in the United States\nhighlighting the environmental racism at work in a world further threatened by\nclimate change. Watershed takes a more expansive view of water in the Great Lakes region by\nexploring four overlapping themes: Michigan Water in Crisis\; Our Impact\;\nConfronting Colonial Legacies\; Water as a Life Force. This symposium will begin\nwith an overview of treaties\, laws\, policies (and the movements that drove and\nupended them) and then takes us on a journey through the history of water\, its\ncultural significance and how we have come to understand it today. Subsequent\nsessions explore the present and how uprisings\, artworks\, and community actions\nhave further shaped the feel and use of water. To follow is a convening that\nasks participants to consider how we may imagine the future of water. In doing\nso\, the symposium will create a “call to action” and produce a “white\npaper.”\nDiverse practitioners have\nbeen invited in order to underscore the need for a multiplicity of voices needed\nto confront these issues. The Ways of Water symposium brings together perspectives of artists\, activists\,\ncommunity members alongside those of scientists and policy makers. To understand\nthe many facets of how humanity and the biosphere interacts and relies on water\,\nit is not only important for us to understand the history and present tense of\nwater (the politics\, economies\, and culture built around and with it) but how\nthese understandings and reimaginings are vital to building a more just and\nequitable future that centers water and respects it for everything it\nprovides. \nSpeakers to include: María Arquero de Alarcón\, Daniel Brown\, José Casas\, Bonnie Devine\, Doug Fogelson\, Amber Hasan and Shea Cobb\, Alice Jennings\, Branko Kerkez\, Osman Khan\, Heidi Kumao\, Lisa Lapeyro\, Kate Levy\, Shanna Merola\, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt + Denielle Emans\, Andrea Pierce\, David Porter\, Senghor Reid\, Perrin Selcer\, Cedric Taylor\, Joe Trumpey\, Morgan P. Vickers and more.\nSymposium events are free and open to all. Keynote\, additional panelists and complete symposium schedule to be announced. SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: \"Pressed Against My Own Glass\" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:On The Ekphrastic Memoir: Rendering the Creative Commons
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series craft lectures are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in Angell Hall #3222). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nIn this craft lecture\, Raquel Gutiérrez shares insights into the art of description and a practice centered on being a social index—a living human with the ability to provide a set of clear cross references for particular art happenings.\n\nRaquel Gutiérrez is an arts critic/writer\, poet and educator. Born and raised in Los Angeles Gutiérrez credits the queer and feminist DIY post-punk 'zine culture of the 1990s plus Los Angeles County and Getty paid arts internships with introducing her/them to the various vibrant art & music scenes and communities throughout Southern California. Gutiérrez is a 2021 recipient of the Rabkin Prize in Arts Journalism\, as well as a 2017 recipient of the The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Her/Their writing has recently appeared in or is forthcoming in *Art In America*\, NPR Music\, *Places Journal*\, and *The Georgia Review*. Gutiérrez teaches in the Oregon State University-Cascades Low Residency Creative Writing MFA Program. Gutiérrez calls Tucson\, Arizona home.\n\nPart butch memoir\, part ekphrastic travel diary\, part queer family tree\, Raquel Gutiérrez’s debut essay collection *Brown Neon* (Coffee House Press\, 2022) considers what it means to be a Latinx artist during the Trump era\, and gleans insight from the sediment of land and relationships. For Gutiérrez\, terrain is essential to understanding that no story\, no matter how personal\, is separate from the space where it unfolds. Whether contemplating the value of adobe as both vernacular architecture and commodified art object\, highlighting the feminist wounding and transphobic apparitions haunting the multi-generational lesbian social fabric\, or recalling a failed romance\, Gutiérrez traverses complex questions of gender\, class\, identity\, and citizenship with curiosity and nuance.\n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. A lactation room (Angell Hall #5209)\, reflection room (Haven Hall #1506)\, and gender-inclusive restroom (Angell Hall 5th floor) are available on site. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Policy Uncertainty in the Market for Coal Electricity: The Case of Air Toxics Standards
DESCRIPTION:Legislation often empowers agencies to develop rules\, but legal challenges may create uncertainty\, thereby increasing firm costs\, delaying policy objectives\, and affecting externalities. This paper investigates policy uncertainty surrounding the Mercury and Air Toxics Standard\, estimating a dynamic oligopoly model of technology adoption and exit for coal electricity generators that extends moment-based Markov equilibrium. To recover annual profits\, we develop estimators for ramping and operation and maintenance costs. Our estimated perceived enforcement probability fell as low as 43% in 2014. Removing policy uncertainty would increase expected discounted generator profits by $0.930 billion\, but increase pollution by $0.809 to $2.206 billion.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Disinheriting the Past\, Democratizing the Present: Politics\, Ethics\, and the Art of Remembering
DESCRIPTION:Acts of public memorialization and commemoration are modes of historical narrativization that inform one’s sense of belonging to a political community. As current events from around the world remind us\, questions about heritage\, historical memory\, and whom we choose to commemorate remain sites of open contestation. Depending on the discourse in which acts of remembrance are embedded\, one person’s hero can be another’s villain\, one person’s visionary another’s tyrant\, one person’s revolutionary another’s terrorist. This EIHS graduate student workshop explores the relationship between history\, heritage\, and the ways in which a commitment to democratic values urge us to reconsider and re-curate public celebrations of the past. We consider the politics of heritage-making from a wide range of temporal and geographical settings.\n\nPanelists:\n\n• Christopher Blackmore (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Ayleen Paola Correa (PhD Student\, Anthropology and History\, University of Michigan)\n• Kristin Foringer (PhD Student\, Sociology\, University of Michigan)\n• Allison Grenda (PhD Student\, History of Art\, University of Michigan)\n• David Tamayo\, moderator (Assistant Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Engineering Department Seminar: Fracture of Composite Laminates Across the Scales: Physical Models and AI-Based Surrogates
DESCRIPTION:Pedro Camanho\nProfessor\nMechanical Engineering\nUniversity of Porto\n\nAbstract:\nThe accurate prediction of the onset and grow of damage mechanisms in laminated polymer composite materials\, as well as the final collapse of composite structures\, has been challenging the scientific community over the last decades. In this presentation\, several analysis models that span different time and length scales will be described. Computational micromechanical models enable the detailed representation of the damage mechanisms at the scale of the reinforcing fibers\, however this level of detail is associated with high computational costs\, especially when using direct numerical simulations. This calls for the development of mesomechanical models that use information obtained at smaller scales. Mesomechanical models typically combine continuum damage mechanics\, which represent ply damage\, with cohesive zone models\, which represent delamination. While being a methodology that properly balances accuracy with reasonable computing times\, mesomechanical models are not well-suited to perform uncertainty quantification and management analysis as the computational cost would be far too high. This calls for macromechanical models\, developed at the length scale of the laminate\, and their combination with machine learning techniques. This work will show how to use theory-guided machine learning to generate B-basis allowables used in the certification of composite aircraft structural details.\n\n\nBio:\nPedro Camanho (MSc in Mechanical Engineering\, UPorto\, 1995) received his PhD in Composite Materials from the Department of Aeronautics\, Imperial College London\, UK\, in 1999. In the same year he joined the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management as Director of the Structural Integrity Unit and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Porto as Assistant Professor. Since 2014 he has been Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Porto. Pedro Camanho is currently the President of the Associated Laboratory in Energy\, Transportation and Aeronautics.\n\nThe main research interests of Pedro Camanho are the mechanics of deformation and fracture of advanced polymer composite materials\, and new concepts for lightweight composite materials and structures for aerospace applications such as hybrid\, nano-structured\, multi-functional\, variable-stiffness\, morphing\, energy-storage and ultra-thin composites.\n\nPedro Camanho is member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Solids and Structures (Elsevier)\, Composites Part A (Elsevier)\, European Journal of Computational Mechanics (Taylor & Francis)\, and Computers\, Materials and Continua (Tech Science Press). He was invited to give several plenary lectures\, and he was chairman of the 3rd Composites Testing and Model Identification Conference - CompTest (2006) and of the 1st ECCOMAS Conference on the Mechanical Response of Composites (2007). Pedro Camanho was Visiting Scientist at NASA-Langley Research Center and at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. He was Royal Society Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and Visiting Professor at the Laboratoire de Mécanique et Technologie\, École Normale Supérieure de Cachan - Université Paris-Saclay.\n\nPedro Camanho coordinated several research projects funded by the European Space Agency\, Airbus\, NASA\, Embraer\, Daimler AG\, Aernnova\, European Union\, FCT\, and US Air Force. Pedro Camanho is the recipient of the 2006 NASA - H.J.E. Reid Award for Outstanding Scientific Paper\, of the 2005 Young Researcher in Applied and Computational Mechanics Award from the Portuguese Association of Theoretical\, Applied and Computational Mechanics\, the 2005-2009 Engineering Fracture Mechanics Most Cited Articles Award\, and the 2016 Mechanics of Materials Highly Cited Research Award. He also received the 2020 Excellence in Research Award of the University of Porto\, and the Career Award from the Portuguese Society of Fatigue and Structural Integrity.\n\nPedro Camanho published over 150 papers in international peer reviewed journals that received over 15\,000 independent citations (Scopus h-index of 59\, independent citations). His work has been successfully transferred to the industry and services: finite elements implemented by ABAQUS (Dassault Systèmes)\, materials models implemented in LS-DYNA and MSC-NASTRAN (Digimat)\, failure criteria in HYPERSIZER\, ESACOMP and ANSYS\, and test methods that are used by both the automotive and aeronautical industries. Pedro Camanho was member of the Council of the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH)\, and of the Council of the European Society for Composite Materials (ESCM). In 2020 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (https://www.aerosociety.com/).\n\nPedro Camanho was Director of the MIT-Portugal Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing focus area doctoral program in Leaders for Technological Industries. He is member of the Programme Committee of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences\, and co-inventor of a patent on energy harvesting and storage composite structure.\n\nSeminar - McDivitt Conference Room & Zoom - https://umich.zoom.us/j/95079073031

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Purpose and Power in Corporations: Are More Democratic Forms of Organizing Better Suited to the Pursuit of Multiple Purposes?
DESCRIPTION:Corporations are increasingly expected to pursue social and environmental purpose in addition to profit\, but we still do not know much about which forms of organizing may be best suited to enable them to rise to this challenge. In this paper\, we ask: which distributions of decision-making power are better suited to sustaining the pursuit of multiple purposes in corporations? To investigate this question\, we present a framework of four ideal type forms of organizing that vary along two key dimensions: purpose and power. We conceptualize organizations as varying in whether they pursue a single purpose vs. multiple purposes\, and in whether decision-making power is concentrated at the top (oligarchical) vs. more democratically distributed amongst workers. We then integrate organization theory and democratic theory to present three theoretical propositions. Specifically\, we advance that more democratic forms of organizing will make it easier to sustain the pursuit of multiple purposes over the long term\, and we propose that formal spaces of deliberation and deliberative culture help facilitate the success of such democratic forms of organizing. Our paper contributes to theorizing at the intersection of power and purpose\, two lines of work that have until now evolved mostly on separate tracks.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Ashwini Deo is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin. She will present\, \"Coordinated on the context: Discourse salience\, exclusivity\, mirativity\, precisification\, and intensification in Marathi\"\n\nABSTRACT\nSeveral Indo-Aryan languages\, including Bangla\, Gujarati\, Hindi\, and Marathi contain a discourse clitic whose uses overlap with those of English particles like exclusives only/just\, intensifiers really/totally\, precisifiers right/exactly/absolutely\, anaphoric indeed/that very\, and scalar additive even without corresponding perfectly to any of them. In this talk\, I offer an analysis of the varied and seemingly disparate uses of this particle\, focusing on the Marathi variant -ts. I claim that =ts conventionally signals that interlocutors are in mutual agreement that the proposition denoted by the prejacent is uniquely salient among alternatives in the current question. That is\, =ts conveys that the proposition expressed by the prejacent offers a schelling point (or focal point) for the interlocutors to coordinate on. Most effects associated with =ts are shown to arise as a consequence of pragmatic reasoning about the position of the prejacent with respect to the contextually given ordering on the current question. In addition to offering a unified analysis for Marathi =ts and its functional cognates in Indo-Aryan\, this new perspective can open the door to a better understanding of why exclusivity\, mirativity\, precisification\, and intensification might cluster together in languages. In closing\, I consider the implications of =ts’s meaning for a crosslinguistic picture of the lexicalization of some discourse-managing functions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquia Series: Turbulence in High-Energy-Density Plasma
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nHydrodynamic instabilities are understood to pose a serious challenge to achieving inertial confinement fusion ignition. During implosion\, the injection of cold\, inert materials into what should be a hot\, burning region quenches energy production. In supernovae undergoing the reverse process of explosion\, instabilities are favored to explain the observed transport of material from stellar depths to the outer debris. Yet\, questions have remained concerning the true mechanism by which instabilities in such high-energy-density (HED) environments achieve these effects. While in classical fluids\, instabilities typically pass through nonlinearity into the disordered phase known as “turbulence\,” it has long been questioned whether in a dense plasma the new degrees of freedom (ionization\, plasma waves\, radiation transport\, etc.) might modify or even prohibit that path. With a new generation of HED experiments\, the field can at last answer this question in the affirmative\, that HED turbulence can develop analogously to classical fluids [Doss et al. Phys. Plasmas 27 032701 (2020)]. Building on the efforts of many in validating early-time behavior\, a four-year campaign using LLNL’s National Ignition Facility successfully measured the deeply nonlinear regimes and confirmed that turbulence emerges as the instabilities develop\, even in timescales as short as 10s of nanoseconds. Following background and an overview of other families of experiments\, we review the Shock/Shear campaign which conclusively demonstrated HED turbulence by studying shear flow subject to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability\, the most well-understood classical route to turbulence. A comprehensive scaling analysis unifies data from over 50 distinct NIF experiments\, themselves scaled ~10 orders of magnitude from classical fluid shear experiments.\n*This work was conducted under the auspices of the U.S. DOE by LANL under contract 89233218CNA000001. LA-UR-22-24038\n\nBio\nForrest Doss has since 2011 been a scientist in Los Alamos’s Theoretical Design Division\, and since 2018 has also been a liaison to Sandia’s Pulsed Power Sciences Center. He was the long-time PI for LANL’s High-Energy-Density Hydrodynamics Experiments\, and is currently Project Leader for Applied Hydrodynamics. He has been principal designer for over 50 shots at NIF\, and several experiments on the Sandia Z Machine. Forrest holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Physics from West Virginia University\, a Certificate of Advanced Study in Math from Cambridge\, and a PhD in Applied Physics from UM.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | The Law That Refuses to Die: Preventive Detention in Early Colonial India
DESCRIPTION:The British East India Company crafted the earliest freestanding statutory provision in the world for administration detention. The regulation\, Bengal Regulation III\, 1818\, empowered the executive to seize and hold individuals indefinitely without trial. It acquired a long afterlife in legal codes in the British Empire beyond India. In postcolonial India\, it has taken on many different incarnations.\n\n Curiously\, very little is known about this regulation. Why and how was it promulgated and why did it take the form it did\, given that in the Company’s colonies\, the executive was unfettered by legislative checks and the jurisdiction of habeas corpus was severely circumscribed? This paper will first account for how and why the early documents pertaining to this regulation disappeared in plain sight in the colonial archives\, journeying to the upland edges of the Northern Circars. Dr. Raman will then show how the recuperation of events that led to Bengal III\, 1818 challenges our understanding of administration detention as a paradigmatic expression of the constitutional guarantee of personal liberty and draw out the significance of this history for theories of emergency and the normalization of wartime law.\n \n Bhavani Raman is Associate Professor at the Department of History at the University of Toronto. Raman’s research and teaching focus on histories of colonialism\, especially as it pertains to questions of law\, administration\, and Tamil worlds. Other than a monograph on paperwork and writing in Tamil South India Document Raj: Writing and Scribes in Early Colonial South India (University of Chicago Press\, 2012 and Permanent Black 2015)\, she has published on recordkeeping and property\, ethics and elementary education\, migration and return in the Bay of Bengal\, and the history of Tamil Studies as an interdisciplinary formation. She is currently working on two projects\, one\, on early colonial security laws in South Asia and the second\, on history of hydrological infrastructure in the city of Chennai\, India using historical maps.\n\nYou may also watch this event on Zoon. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Attention\, Instrumentality\, and the Orchestration of Mind” - Dr. Francesca Brittan\, Case Western Reserve University
DESCRIPTION:“Attention\, Instrumentality\, and the Orchestration of Mind”\nThe last several decades have seen an explosion of texts by psychologists and cognitive scientists detailing the erosion of our attentive capacities and the rise of diagnoses including ADHD. In explaining this apparent crisis\, many draw on the metaphor of the “neural orchestra’ popularized by (among others) the neuroscientist Elkhonen Goldberg. According to this model\, individual areas of cortical specialization are players in a large-scale ensemble that must be well-conducted to operate at peak efficiency. Absence of a strong cognitive leader generates chaos. This paper interrogates the origins and ideological resonances of the brain-orchestra. Although the metaphor was embraced as a novelty in the mid-1990s (a substitute for computational models of cognition)\, it has much older roots\, originating in phrenological theory of the 1810s. From the craniology of Franz Joseph Gall to the phreno-magnetism of Mariano Cubi y Soler\, orchestral cartographies of mind flourished. Replacing (or fusing) metaphysical concepts of harmony with theories of hierarchical cerebral organology\, they likened the focused mind to the centrally-organized orchestra. The concept of attention was crucial in both arenas\, conceived as a controlling force yoking players into powerful cognitive\, musical\, and political wholes. The orchestra in the brain was also a brain in the orchestra. Instrumental music itself\, as it accrued cultural capital through the early nineteenth century\, was redefined in terms of cognitive theory\, demanding the intensely conducted forms of attention first celebrated by Wackenroder and enforced by newly powerful podium leaders. Today\, the historical and neuropolitical forces that generated the Romantic mind-orchestra have been largely forgotten\, but they continue to exert a spectral influence\, hovering behind our fetish for cognitive focus and our psychopolitical fear of distraction. \n\nFrancesca Brittan is Associate Professor of Music at Case Western Reserve University. Her scholarship focuses on music and sound cultures since 1800\, often at the intersection of science\, magic\, and aesthetics. Her first book\, Music and Fantasy in the Age of Berlioz (Cambridge\, 2017) traces intersections between musical enchantment and romantic science from Berlioz to Stravinsky. Current projects include two edited volumes: The Attentive Ear: Sound\, Cognition\, and Subjectivity (University of Pennsylvania Press\, co-edited with Carmel Raz)\; and Berlioz and His World (University of Chicago Press\, co-edited with Sarah Hibberd). Her second monograph\, Instruments of Mind\, examines entanglements between musical and neural organologies from Descartes to the present\, bringing together sonic\, cognitive\, and neuroscientific histories. Her work has been bolstered by fellowships from the University of Cambridge\, the University of Amsterdam\, the NEH\, the Social Sciences Research Council of Canada\, and the American Musicological Society. She is co-founder of the Music and Attention Working Group at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics\, Frankfurt.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Inaugural Borka Tomljenović Lecture. Returning to the Groove of History
DESCRIPTION:In the years prior to World War I\, the great American historian Henry Adams wrote that Russia would always remain the principal challenge for Europe. A quick romp through history demonstrating why that has proved accurate. As for the Ukraine war\, it has culminated the second phase of globalization\, what I call Globalization 2.0 and will be juxtaposed with Globalization 1.0. Moving to China\, the new Cold War between China and the United States will be a permanent feature of the international landscape for reasons that involve geography\, military affairs\, cyber wars\, ideology and trade\, all of which I will explain in detail. At the end of my talk\, I will have a few words to say about two of my books: *Balkan Ghosts* and *Adriatic*.\n \n Robert D. Kaplan is the bestselling author of twenty books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages\, including *Adriatic*\, *The Good American*\, *The Revenge of Geography*\, *Asia’s Cauldron*\, *Monsoon*\, *The Coming Anarchy*\, and *Balkan Ghosts*. He holds the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. For three decades he reported on foreign affairs for *The Atlantic*. He was a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board and the U.S. Navy's Executive Panel. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers.”\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1040 LSA Building and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at: https://myumi.ch/pZ47y\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.
