DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Brown Bag
DESCRIPTION:Shyrokonis: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the early release of thousands of incarcerated individuals\, including those with histories of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. Survivor advocates stress the importance of adequate supports for decarcerated individuals during re-entry\, and notification and supports for their partners or ex-partners if there is a history of IPV. This survey assessed IPV survivors’ expectations of and experiences with decarceration in the state of Michigan. Findings highlight that out of 42 survivors with recently decarcerated (ex-)partners\, 64.3% reported helpful behavior on the part of their released partner. By contrast\, out of 72 survivors with still-incarcerated (ex-)partners\, the same percentage - 64.3% - expected harmful behavior from their partner if released. Decarceration efforts may distinguish between individuals who are likely to harm versus help (ex-)partners upon release. Nonetheless\, survivors reported several unmet needs\, indicating the need for better re-integration services for decarcerated individuals and their families. \n\nMichael: Recent theoretical models and empirical studies provide conflicting information about whether early adversity and disadvantage may accelerate or delay the pace of brain development. Few studies have examined how disadvantage within the broader neighborhood may modulate the pace of brain development – particularly on the level of brain networks\, which critically underlie cognitive and socioemotional functioning. The present study leveraged a longitudinal community sample of 557 twins sampled from neighborhoods with above-average levels of poverty to evaluate the prospective association between neighborhood disadvantage during childhood (6-10y) and the pace of functional brain network development during adolescence (10-17y). We employed graph theoretical analyses of fMRI data to quantify different properties of network function. Multi-level models revealed that greater neighborhood disadvantage during childhood was associated with reduced network segregation – a proxy for functional specialization of neural networks – during adolescence\, even after controlling for household-level disadvantage. Moreover\, we found that network segregation\, especially in cognitive control networks\, showed developmental increases across adolescence in youth from more\, but not less\, disadvantaged neighborhoods. These findings suggest that neighborhood disadvantage may dynamically influence the pace of functional network development in youth\, characterized by initial delays and followed by subsequent accelerations to catch up. Implications for our understanding of risk\, resilience\, and intervention will be discussed.

ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Human Ecology and the Brain: Languages and Cultures as Contexts for Development
DESCRIPTION:Human ecology is the study of relations between humans and their natural\, cultural\, built\, and technological environments. Psychology is a discipline essential to the concept of human ecology\, yet the scientific discipline of psychology has disconnected itself from the broader study of human ecology. Recent attempts to decolonize psychology and bring more representativeness into the field brings opportunities for reconsidering this relationship. This talk will consider how approaches to language and cognitive development can be informed by an understanding of human ecology. I will present data on monolingual and bilingual Chinese-\,  English-\, and Spanish-speaking children’s language and literacy development\, but also on the worldviews that come with language and discuss not just how children acquire languages\, but also how languages acquire children (and adults) as we navigate complex social relationships. Throughout\, I will discuss my own and others' experiences with learning language and cultural systems vastly different from our own\, and suggest broader emphases on the relations of language to cultural dynamics and to decolonizing and humanizing our discipline.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | LZ: First Dark Matter Search Results and How We Got There
DESCRIPTION:Strong evidence exists for the presence of dark matter in the universe however its nature remains a mystery. For many years a multitude of experiments have looked for the dark matter particle without success\, but carving out large chunks of excluded parameter spaces.\n\nLUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a dark matter direct detection experiment consisting of a dual-phase xenon Time Projection Chamber and surrounded by an active Xe skin veto and an active gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator outer detector. It is placed within an ultrapure water shield and located a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead\, South Dakota.\n\nThe LZ collaboration has now published the results for its first search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). This result utilized a fiducial mass of 5.5 tonnes of Xe and an exposure of  60 live days. LZ achieved world-leading sensitivity\, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV. In addition\, this first run demonstrated the capabilities of the LZ experiment and informed us as to what we can expect in the years to come.\n\nIn this talk I will given an overview of the LZ detector\, with a bit more focus than usual on its construction and operations\, and a description of the analysis that brought us these first results.\n

DESCRIPTION:Written text contains a wealth of information that can be turned into research data to study almost every aspect of human behavior\, human health and our society. However\, converting text to usable data requires an understanding of standard techniques from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). MIDAS and the AI Lab are jointly organizing a monthly series of NLP workshops during the Fall 2022 semester. The first installment is on Sept. 19\, and the second installment is on Oct. 10. Each session does not directly depend upon information from previous sessions.\n\nIn the first workshop of the series\, we will provide a broad overview of NLP and introduce basic concepts used in NLP\, including keyword counting\, sentiment classification\, and topic modeling. Additional topics include how NLP can be used\, what the data look like\, what (social science) questions could be answered using NLP\, and more.\n\nThe second session\, on Oct 10\, is titled \"What's in Text Data?\"\nWritten text contains rich information about human knowledge\, opinions\, and communication styles\, but how do we extract insight about all this from the data? In this second workshop in the series\, we will first introduce Jupyter notebooks\, a popular platform for performing data science research. Then we will discuss how to choose a dataset for your research question\, extract your own dataset from social media sites like Reddit and Twitter\, and convert the raw text data to a usable format. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Indigenous People's Day Symposium: \"The Rise and Fall of the Ogemakaan\"
DESCRIPTION:Location and Date: \nMonday\, Oct 10\, \n4:00- 6:00pm\, \nPond Room on the first floor of the Michigan Union\nAbstract: \nAnishinaabe (Odawa\, Bodewadmi\, and Ojibwe) legal and political philosophy is buried under the infrastructure of modern self-determination law and policy. Modern Anishinaabe tribes are rough copies of American governments. The Anishinaabeg (people) usually choose their ogemaag (leaders) through an at-large election process that infects tribal politics with individualized self-interest. Those elected leaders\, what I call ogemaakaan (artificial leaders) preside over modern governments that encourage hierarchy\, political opportunism\, and tyranny of the majority. While modern tribal governments are extraordinary successes compared to the era of total federal control\, a significant number of tribes face intractable political disputes that can traced to the philosophical disconnect from culture and tradition.\n\nAnishinaabe philosophy prioritizes ogemaag who are deferential and serve as leaders only for limited purposes and times. Ogemaag are true representatives who act only when and how instructed to do so by their constituents. Their decisions are rooted in cultural and traditional philosophies\, including for example Mino-Bimaadiziwin (the act of living a good life)\, Inawendewin (relational accountability)\, Niizhwaaswii Mishomis/Nokomis Kinoomaagewinawaan (the Seven Gifts the Grandfathers or Grandmothers)\, and the Dodemaag (clans). I offer suggestions on how modern tribal government structures can be lightly modified to restore much of this philosophy.

DESCRIPTION:Polly Hsu\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\nBiochemistry and Molecular Biology\nMichigan State University\n\nKeywords: translation\, uORFs\, nonsense-mediated decay\n\nAbstract: 30-70% of mRNAs in humans\, mice and plants contain short ORFs\, called upstream ORFs (uORFs)\, in their 5’ leader sequences. The translation of uORFs is expected to repress the protein synthesis of their downstream main ORF (mORF) and to trigger mRNA degradation\, presumably through nonsense-mediated decay (NMD). I will share our current progress investigating the global and gene-specific mechanisms by which uORFs regulate gene expression in Arabidopsis and tomato. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker. On Pandemic Potential
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the West African Ebola crisis\, the World Bank along with WHO\, reinsurers\, and a catastrophic risk modeling firm\, developed the Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF). The aim of the PEF was to leverage private investment to rapidly finance pandemic emergency responses in poor countries. The construction and design of the PEF hinges upon a definition and formal mathematical rendering of what they’ve described as ‘pandemic potential.’ Pandemic potential—the idea that certain pathogens are more likely than others to cause mass sickness across national borders and over a short period of time -- signals a particular relationship between pathogens and public health scientists’ prophetic relation to the past. \n\nWhile much has been written about temporal ideologies governing pandemic preparedness and discourse\, less has been said about the categories of person/human and place/geographies that ‘pandemic potential’ also presumes and produces. In this conversation\, I hope to discuss what all of this means in relation to race\, finance capital\, and geography\, via a close reading of the bond’s documentation\, interviews with key players in the development of the bond\, and other critical analyses of the public health’s financialization.\n\nAdia Benton is an associate professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University\, where she is affiliated with the Science in Human Culture Program. She is the author of the award-winning book\, HIV Exceptionalism: Development through Disease in Sierra Leone\, and is currently writing a book about the West African Ebola outbreak. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Will Bullfighting  Survive The Decade?
DESCRIPTION:Bullfighting was once known as Spain’s “national fiesta”. For centuries\, it was a major cultural industry not only in the Iberian Peninsula but also in the South of France and across much of Latin America. Ethical objections and a flailing economic model mean that its future is no longer secure. Tales of ageing and flailing audiences have been exaggerated in Spain\, with significantly more tickets being sold for bullfights than\, say\, the theatre. It is\, however\, an expensive spectacle that cannot be easily downsized. In this lecture\, Duncan Wheeler argues that a blanket prohibition is unlikely to take place over the next decade but that\, unless public subsidies are increased and/or the traditional and endogamic taurine establishment becomes more imaginative with its business model(s)\, bullfighting may well cease to exist in its current form before 2030.

DESCRIPTION:Preventing chronic diseases is an essential aspect of medical care. To prevent chronic diseases\, physicians focus on monitoring their risk factors and prescribing the necessary medication. The optimal monitoring policy depends on the patient's risk factors and demographics. Monitoring too frequently may be unnecessary and costly\; on the other hand\, monitoring the patient infrequently means the patient may forgo needed treatment and experience adverse events related to the disease. We propose a finite horizon and finite-state Markov decision process to define monitoring policies. To build our Markov decision process\, we estimate stochastic models based on longitudinal observational data from electronic health records for a large cohort of patients seen in the national U.S. Veterans Affairs health system. We use our model to study policies for whether or when to assess the need for cholesterol-lowering medications. We further use our model to investigate the role of gender and race on optimal monitoring policies.\nDaniel F. Otero‐Leon is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan and is co-advised by Dr. Brian Denton and Dr. Mariel Lavieri of IOE. His research interests are generally in operations research and\, more specifically\, in stochastic models and stochastic dynamic programming with applications to service systems\, including health systems and revenue management. His dissertation research is in the area of data-driven models for improving decision-making in the context of cardiovascular disease\, with the help of clinical collaborators at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. DESCRIPTION:Sign up for a free series of self-defense workshops!\n\nAiming to equip the incoming students with the skills to increase their self-confidence and preparedness for the unexpected\, the Engineering Student Government (ESG) in partnership with UofM Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS) is setting out with a newly established SaferSelf project. Starting on September 12th and running until October 10th a series of free empowerment self-defense workshops will be held weekly on Mondays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Central Campus (exact location TBD).\n\nEmpowerment self-defense sessions explore the culture of violence\, and teach concrete but practical effective skills for personal safety and physical self defense in a wide variety of contexts ranging from harassment to sexual assault. Participants will be able to:\n- understand how situational awareness can deter or prevent an attack.\n- use verbal skills for assertive communication.\n- evade and set boundaries (verbal & physical).\n- use practical options to make ourselves more comfortable when uncomfortable situations occur.\n- recognize and interrupt unwanted behavior when in social situations\, interpersonal/intimate relationships as well as interactions with strangers.\n\nThe series will be composed of the following workshops:\n1. DESCRIPTION:This October marks the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of GATTACA\, a science fiction film that addresses the potential complications of a world in which genetic information can be rapidly analyzed and manipulated. DESCRIPTION:For the last 40 years\, Michael’s improvisatory skills on the bassoon have opened the door to a variety of musical environments not associated with the instrument. He has recorded with Ira Sullivan\, Red Rodney\, Wynton Marsalis\, John Hicks\, Bobby Watson\, George Adams\, Dave Douglas\, Chris Potter\, Joe Lovano and Elvis Costello. He is a founding member of The Charles Mingus Orchestra and his fifth CD as a leader called Uncharted Waters released in 2018 has garnered glowing reviews. Michael's participation conducting masterclasses and performing concerts at over 18 IDRS conferences & Double Reed events have inspired bassoonists and oboists to push beyond the traditional roles of their instruments.
