They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. Created by two prominent Belgrade Surrealists –Aleksandar Vučo\, who wrote the verses\, and Dušan Matić\, who authored the foreword and created collages and the accompanying prose texts which “explain” them—*The Fine Feats* is one of the examples of avant-garde photopoetry books for children\, and a rare example of the surrealist “novel in verse” accompanied by photomontages. The lecture introduces the lesser-known practices of the Belgrade Surrealists\, explains their inclination towards the renewal of children’s literature focusing particularly on *The Fine Feats*\, and discusses the aesthetic and ideological concepts that the Belgrade Surrealists developed and put in service to the Revolution. Examining these surrealist concepts—the wall\, the marvelous\, spacing/doubling\, and the interval—the lecture unpacks the latent meanings and emancipatory potential of this societally meaningful pedagogical project. Finally\, the author offers a close inspection of few of Matić’s collages and accompanying prose captions from the book and their subversive\, “Aesopian” role within the symbolic economies of contemporary Yugoslav society. The lecture concludes by delineating the historical trajectory of the Belgrade surrealist circle and subsequent editions of *The Fine Feats* in socialist Yugoslavia.\n \n Aleksandar Bošković (PhD\, University of Michigan) is a lecturer in Bosnian\, Croatian\, and Serbian in the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University in New York. West is a Research Professor in the Survey Methodology Program\, located within the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research on the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (U-M) campus. He earned his PhD from the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science in 2011. Before that\, he received an MA in Applied Statistics from the U-M Statistics Department in 2002\, being recognized as an Outstanding First-year Applied Masters student\, and a BS in Statistics with Highest Honors and Highest Distinction from the U-M Statistics Department in 2001. His current research interests include the implications of measurement error in auxiliary variables and survey paradata for survey estimation\, selection bias in surveys\, responsive/adaptive survey design\, interviewer effects\, and multilevel regression models for clustered and longitudinal data. He is the lead author of a book comparing different statistical software packages in terms of their mixed-effects modeling procedures (Linear Mixed Models: A Practical Guide using Statistical Software\, Third Edition\, Chapman Hall/CRC Press\, 2022)\, and he is a co-author of a second book entitled Applied Survey Data Analysis (with Steven Heeringa and Pat Berglund)\, the second edition of which was published by CRC Press in June 2017. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2022. \n\nAmong the numerous explanations that have been offered for recent errors in pre-election polls\, selection bias due to non-ignorable partisan nonresponse bias\, where the probability of responding to a poll is a function of the candidate preference that a poll is attempting to measure (even after conditioning on other relevant covariates used for weighting adjustments)\, has received relatively less focus in the academic literature. Under this type of selection mechanism\, estimates of candidate preferences based on individual or aggregated polls may be subject to significant bias\, even after standard weighting adjustments. Until recently\, methods for measuring and adjusting for this type of non-ignorable selection bias have been unavailable. Fortunately\, recent developments in the methodological literature have provided political researchers with easy-to-use measures of non-ignorable selection bias. In this study\, we apply a new measure that has been developed specifically for estimated proportions to this challenging problem. We analyze data from 18 different pre-election polls: nine different telephone polls conducted in eight different states prior to the U.S. Presidential election in 2020\, and nine different pre-election polls conducted either online or via telephone in Great Britain prior to the 2015 General Election. We rigorously evaluate the ability of this new measure to detect and adjust for selection bias in estimates of the proportion of likely voters that will vote for a specific candidate\, using official outcomes from each election as benchmarks and alternative data sources for estimating key characteristics of the likely voter populations in each context.\n\nMPSDS\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021\, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. These aspirations appear to have converged on the global partnership. An assessment of the prospective success of the current initiative can be aided by examining and attempting to explain the record to date. Why has South Korea not yet played a greater leadership role among democracies in Asia? The country has the credibility\, the democratic record\, and the regional ties to do so. While discussion of the country’s regional and international roles has tended to frame South Korea as a middle power state\, an alternative line of inquiry begins with semantic ambivalence and the subjective context of South Korea’s external engagement. In particular\, conflicting meanings of democracy\, historically-rooted understandings of the connection between nation and democracy\, and ideas about the relationship between the nation and the external world raise challenges to the emergence of South Korea as a regional democratic leader. The relationship with the United States is critical to understanding these challenges.\n \n Erik Mobrand is Korea Policy Chair and a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. He studies political transformation in Asia with Korea as a central reference point. Mobrand is the author of Top-Down Democracy in South Korea (University of Washington Press\, 2019) and articles on topics including corruption\, political parties\, law and politics\, criminality\, gender and politics\, management of cities\, and Korean relations with Southeast Asia. In 2016\, Mobrand joined Seoul National University as an associate professor in the Graduate School of International Studies. The piping plover and red knot have exhibited population declines in recent years\, particularly in the intertidal habitats of South Carolina. Recent research has established linkages between benthic prey abundance and foraging activity along South Carolina beaches\; however\, most of these projects focused on determining impacts from shoreline modification\, rather than quantifying habitat characteristics. Identifying characteristics associated with optimal foraging habitat can help inform state and federal permitting and habitat management activities in areas these shorebirds inhabit. \n\nA project team at the ACE Basin Reserve worked with the SC Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a habitat assessment tool for the piping plover and red knot. To help relieve this tension\, the Dark Energy Survey Gravitational Wave group (DESGW) seeks to perform a standard siren measurement of H0 by identifying electromagnetic counterparts to compact binary mergers. Together with the GW data from detections by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration (LVK)\, this information allows us to make an H0 measurement independent of traditional methods. In this talk\, I will detail DESGW’s pursuit of this measurement\, including our tools for observation and analysis\, recent key results\, ongoing studies critical to the project\, and our preparation for the next LVK observing run.\n\nTorben Purz (U-M Physics)\n\nImaging of Dynamic Exciton Interactions and Coupling in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides\n\nTransition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are regarded as a possible material platform for quantum information science\, photovoltaics\, and related device applications. However\, many experimental results on TMDs are only realized at specific spots on the sample\, presenting a challenge to the scalability of these applications. Here\, we demonstrate multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy on TMD monolayer and heterostructure samples. This technique enables us to shed light on the spatial dynamics of various material parameters—including dephasing\, inhomogeneity\, and strain\, as well as coherent exciton coupling and charge transfer. We demonstrate that dephasing and inhomogeneity are very sensitive to residual strain in state-of-the-art TMD monolayer samples. At the same time\, the coherent coupling strength and charge transfer remain robust across large areas of the heterostructure sample. Our findings strengthen the case for heterostructure TMDs as a next-generation material platform for device applications and introduce a powerful tool in multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy for material characterization.\n\nAidan Herderschee (U-M Physics)\n\nThe Space of Supersymmetric Theories\n\nI will review how causality non-trivially bounds the space of quantum field theories\, focusing in particular on maximally supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. These two successful New Orleans natives come together in a conversation moderated by Christopher Audain\, Managing Director of the Arts Initiative.\n\nWynton Marsalis is a world-renowned trumpeter\, bandleader and composer\, and a leading advocate of American culture. He presently serves as Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Director of Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School. Born in New Orleans\, Louisiana in 1961\, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12\, entered The Juilliard School at age 17\, and soon thereafter joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He recorded more than 103 jazz and classical recordings\, which have won nine GRAMMY® awards. In 1983\, he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz GRAMMYs® in the same year\, repeating the distinction the following year. Today\, Wynton is the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards® in five consecutive years (1983−1987). In 1997\, Wynton became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer in Music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields. Marsalis has received honorary doctorates from over 25 of America’s top academic institutions including Columbia\, Harvard\, Howard\, Princeton and Yale. In 2001\, he was appointed Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In 2005 Wynton received The National Medal of Arts\, the highest award given to artists by the United States government.\n\nWarde Manuel is the Director of Athletics at the University of Michigan. He was a high school All-American football player\, and played for the University of Michigan under Schembechler. After graduating\, Manuel was coordinator of U‑M’s Wade H. McCree Jr. Incentive Scholarship program from 1990 to 1993\, which helps students prepare for higher education at public universities in Michigan. Afterward\, Manuel served in several roles within Michigan’s athletic department\, and was named associate athletic director with oversight responsibility for operation facets of the university’s athletic program. He also oversaw Michigan’s football and men’s basketball programs. In 2012\, Manuel became the director of athletics at the University of Connecticut. UConn teams won six NCAA national championships under Manuel’s leadership. Manuel returned to U‑M following his four-year run at UConn.
