SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Becoming *Marimo*: The Curious Case of a Charismatic Alga and Imagined Indigeneity
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 110 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/Qekgy\n\nHokkaidō’s Lake Akan is home to world famous algae: spherical-shaped growths of Aegagropila linnaei known in Japanese as marimo (and sometimes called “moss balls” in English)\, which have been given the status of “Special Natural Moment” by the Japanese government. Due in part to a well-known story that has long been erroneously promoted as a folktale belonging to the indigenous Ainu community of northern Japan\, marimo have become a charismatic species and are sold as “pets” in Japan and abroad. My presentation traces the history of this “fakelore” and the ways in which the Ainu community around Lake Akan have nevertheless embraced the marimo in the name of cultural efflorescence.\n\nJon L Pitt is Assistant Professor of Japanese Environmental Humanities at the University of California\, Irvine. He earned his Ph.D. in Japanese from the University of California\, Berkeley. His current book project\, Becoming Botanical: Rethinking the Human through Plant Life in Modern Japan\, looks to bring insights from Critical Plant Studies into the study of modern Japanese literature and cinema. His he also the translator of poet Itō Hiromi’s Tree Spirits Grass Spirits (Kodama kusadama)\, which is forthcoming in 2023 via Nightboat Books\, and the host of the environmental humanities podcast Nature : Mono\, the first season of which is dedicated to the theme of “Oceanic Japan.”\n\nThis lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant. \n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar: Innovations in Capturing Detailed Chemical Kinetic Features in Large-Eddy Simulations of Turbulent Combustion
DESCRIPTION:Perrine Pepiot\nAssociate Professor\nSibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering\nCornell University\n\nAbout the seminar:\nThe vital role of simulations and computational insights in reducing pollutant emissions\, designing better engines and better fuels\, and assessing the technical and economic viability of radically different combustion technologies\, is now clearly established. A key enabling step is the development of computational approaches that allow our increasingly detailed knowledge of the chemical kinetics of realistic fuel oxidation to be applied to the modeling and simulation of combustion reactors. In this talk\, I will briefly review the challenges associated with the integration of detailed chemical kinetics in reactive flow simulations. I will then discuss the progress made in the analysis and reduction of complex kinetic networks\, from graph-based techniques to data-driven approaches\, the characteristics of the reduced models they typically generate\, and how those techniques can be enhanced through careful integration and coupling with CFD tools\, wherein the flow characteristics adaptively inform the reduced chemical model to be used. I will conclude on the remaining challenges still to overcome\, and potential avenues to do so.\n \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Pepiot is currently an Associate Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University\, USA. She has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University\, and a M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Ecole Nationale Superieure de l'Aeronautique et de l'Espace (Supaero) in Toulouse\, France. Prior to joining the Cornell faculty in 2011\, Dr. Pepiot held a research scientist position at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado\, US\, on Biomass Gasification Process Modeling and Optimization. Dr. Pepiot’s main interest is in developing new modeling and computational tools to improve the description of complex chemical processes in CFD simulations of energy systems\, especially in combustion. Her current work includes the development of automatic chemical kinetic analysis and reduction tools for multi-component fuel mixtures\, new algorithms to efficiently handle complex chemistry in large eddy simulation of turbulent flames\, with a focus on particle PDF methods\, and the use of detailed multi-scale numerical techniques to simulate reactive particle-laden flows. She is currently an associate editor for Combustion and Flame\, and has an active role in the Combustion Institute leadership at the local (Eastern States)\, US\, and International levels.\n\nBoeing Lecture Hall & Zoom - https://umich.zoom.us/j/91746715474

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jason Gilbert will give a talk entitled \"Sources of Background in Space-based Mass Spectrometers\" at 3:30pm\, Thursday\, Oct. 13 in CSRB 2246. The seminar will also be available on Zoom. Visit the website for details.\n\nAbstract: \nMass spectrometers used in space can experience common sources of background signals that contaminate measurements and affect the data. If the background is large enough\, it may create false signals or mask the true signals underneath. Using examples from the data of ACE-SWICS and MESSENGER-FIPS\, two sensors with substantial U-Mich involvement\, several common sources of background are examined\, including high-energy radiation\, light contamination by UV\, particle interactions with instrument surfaces\, and electronics noise. The effects are shown in the instrument data\, along with strategies for mitigation in future instrument designs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium Series Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Speaker(s): Leonid Polterovich (Tel Aviv University)\n\nI will discuss an adaptation of Gromov's ideal-valued measures to symplectic topology. It leads to a unified viewpoint at three \"big fiber theorems\": the Centerpoint Theorem in combinatorial geometry\, the Maximal Fiber Inequality in topology\, and the Non-displaceable Fiber Theorem in symplectic topology\, and yields applications to symplectic rigidity. Joint work with Adi Dickstein\, Yaniv Ganor\, and Frol Zapolsky.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Deepening Diversity: A DEI of Public Health Consequence
DESCRIPTION:Although people of color suffering under interlocking systems of oppression — such as impoverished and working-class residents of disinvested urban or rural communities — bear the largest population health burdens in the United States\, the magnitude of racialized health inequity is often greatest among college graduates. Whether predominantly white universities are simply failing to address the greater structurally-rooted health needs of students of color or are — however inadvertently — contributing to them\, new holistic DEI efforts have an urgent role to play toward promoting health equity.\n\nABOUT DR. GERONIMUS\nArline T. Geronimus is a professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education and research professor in the Population Studies Center at the Institute for Social Research\, where she also is the founding director of the Public Health Demography training program. She is affiliated with the Center for Research on Ethnicity\, Culture and Health. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science\, Dr. Geronimus received her undergraduate degree in political theory from Princeton University\, her doctorate in behavioral sciences from the Harvard School of Public Health\, and did post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Geronimus originated an analytic framework\, \"weathering\" that posits that the health of African Americans is subject to early health deterioration as a consequence of social exclusion\; much of her scholarly work is related to developing and testing this structurally-rooted biopsychosocial framework. Her general research interests include structural and cultural influences on population variation in family structure and age-at-first birth\; the effects of poverty\, institutionalized discrimination\, and aspects of residential areas on health\; the collective strategies marginalized communities employ to mitigate\, resist\, or undo the harmful effects of poverty and structural racism on their health\; the trade-offs these strategies reflect\; and the perturbations public policies sometimes cause in these autonomous protections. Dr. Geronimus is developing a general approach to disrupting weathering in affected populations\, Jedi Public Health\, that applies social psychological understandings of the impact of contingencies of social identity\, environmental cues\, and stereotype threat on physiological stress process activation among social identity groups. Dr. Geronimus has worked with the US Civil Rights Commission\, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York\, and the Aspen Institute's Roundtable on Comprehensive Community Initiatives to revitalize American cities.\n\nABOUT THE AWARD\nThe James S. Jackson Distinguished Career Award for Diversity Scholarship recognizes a senior faculty member at the University of Michigan who has made important contributions to understanding diversity\, equity\, and inclusion through research\, scholarship and creative endeavors\, who has an outstanding record as an educator in teaching and mentoring\, and whose work has focused on issues of importance to underrepresented communities.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:*Diamonds by the Decade:* The Best of CJS 75th Anniversary Film Series | A Night of Madness: *A Page of Madness* with benshi Nanako Yamauchi and Little Bang Theory
DESCRIPTION:*A Page of Madness* is one of the greatest avant-garde films in history. It was directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa in 1926\, and lost for nearly half a century. The story\, by Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata\, centers on a janitor at the insane asylum that holds his wife. Long considered a lost film\, director Teinosuke Kinugasa thankfully found a negative in his garden storehouse in the 1970s.\n\nJapanese benshi Nanako Yamauchi will narrate the film and Detroit area trio Little Bang Theory (Frank Pahl\, Terri Sarris\, and Doug Shimmin) will perform an original score written by Frank Pahl on toy and hand-made instruments.\n\nBook your free tickets with the Michigan Theater here: https://myumi.ch/9P1en\n \n Curated by Markus Nornes.\n\nCosponsored by the U-M Department of Film\, Television\, and Media.\n \n Nanako Yamauchi\n Nanako Yamauchi is a graduate of the Film Department at Nihon University\, the oldest film school in Japan. She began studying the art of the benshi under Sawato Midori in 2010\, performing for Matsuda Film Productions’ Friends of Silent Film Appreciation\, various film festivals and the National Film Archive of Japan. In 2021 and 2022\, Yamauchi was a supervising editor for Nasuno Mayuka’s manga about benshi entitled *Ray—A Taisho Era Cinema Story*.\n \n Frank Pahl\n As François Couture notes\, Frank Pahl is \"a true original\, composer/musician/sound artist [spending] his musical career in the underground\, amassing a small cult following. He charms his public with lovely avant-garde melodies played on an impressive array of neglected acoustic instruments and homemade automatons.\" His band Little Bang Theory\, with Terri Sarris and Doug Shimmin\, uses toy instruments to perform sophisticated and touching original scores.\n \n Terri Sarris\n Terri Sarris's creative work includes award-winning feature and short films (shot on 16mm\, Super 8mm film\, and digital media)\, film and television scripts\, and work as a curator\, film festival board member and festival juror in the larger media community\, as well as performances in dance and music. Over three decades she helped build U-M's Department of Film\, TV and Media Studies into a major presence in moving image media production and study.\n \n Doug Shimmin\n Doug Shimmin has been banging\, strumming and singing his way around the metro Detroit area for more than 30 years. As a founding member of the award-winning\, multi-ethnic group Immigrant Suns\, Doug left behind his punk new wave flavors for the old world. After a great run of touring and performances\, he sat down at a tiny table of toy instruments with friends Frank Pahl and Terri Sarris. From there they created Little Bang Theory\, and it’s been miniature magic ever since.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Difficult Archive: Reckoning with the University of Michigan’s Complicity in the U.S. Colonization of the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:Join us for discussion with Professor de la Cruz about the historical relationship between the University of Michigan and the Philippines in the first decades of the American colonial period\, out of which came some of the most extensive collections of Philippine material (historical\, cultural\, and natural scientific) in North America. Professor de la Cruz will introduce two collaborative projects by U of M faculty and students being carried out to recognize and repair the harm caused by these collections at all levels\, including in their acquisition\, representation\, contextualization\, stewardship\, and use. The event will be followed by tours of the historic Detroit Observatory\, with observing if weather permits.\n\nDeirdre de la Cruz is Associate Professor of History and Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She is an historian and cultural anthropologist of the Philippines\, with an interest in the transformation of religious sensibilities\, beliefs\, and phenomena in modernity. She is the author of the book Mother Figured: Marian Apparitions and the Making of a Filipino Universal (University of Chicago Press\, 2015)\, and several articles on religion in the Philippines. Her current projects include a scholarly book on the history of faith healing in the Philippines\, an edited volume on religious diversity in the Philippines\, and two plays\, one on the legacies of Filipinos who fought in WWII\, and another that tells the history of Christianity through the eyes of its apostates. In the last few years\, Deirdre has turned her attention to the vast collections of Philippine materials at the University of Michigan and an exploration of related questions and concerns\, including affect as archival object and archival method\, translingualism in the imperial archives\, and how to decenter the US in US empire studies.
