SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: \"Pressed Against My Own Glass\" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Who\, What\, When\, and How of Industrial PolicyA Text-Based Approach
DESCRIPTION:Although questions surrounding industrial policy are fundamental\, we lack both measures and comprehensive data on industrial policy. Consequently\, scholars and practitioners lack a sys- tematic picture of industrial policy practice. This paper provides a new\, text-based approach to measuring industrial policy. We take the tools of supervised machine learning to a comprehen- sive\, English-language database of economic policy to construct measures of industrial policy at the country\, industry\, and year level. We use this data to establish four fundamental facts about global industrial policy from 2009 to 2020. First\, IP is common (25 percent of policies in our database) and trending upward since 2010. Second\, industrial policy is technocratic and gran- ular\, taking the form of subsidies and export promotion measures targeted at individual firms\, instead of tariffs. Third\, the countries engaged most in IP tend to be wealthier (top income quintile) liberal democracies\, and IP is very rare among the poorest nations (bottom quintile). Fourth\, IP tends to be targeted towards a small share of industries\, and targeting is highly corre- lated with an industry’s revealed comparative advantage. Thus\, we find contemporary practice is a far cry from industrial policy’s past\, and tends toward selective\, export-oriented policies used by the world’s most developed economies.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | SARS-CoV-2 invasion dynamics and disease development: insights from viral sequences
DESCRIPTION:ROOM 747 Weiser Hall\nThis talk will be hybrid\, with improved function. \nZOOM https://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\nPassword: CSCS (all caps)\n\nAbstract : The unfolding of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to tremendous sequencing efforts\, with tens of millions of viral sequences now publicly available on platforms such as GISAID for quantitative analysis by researchers worldwide. These sequences can be informative of the timing of viral emergence in regions\, patterns of geographic spread\, epidemiological dynamics\, and viral adaptation. They can also be informative of the ways in which viral populations evolve at various scales\, from within-host\, to between-host\, to the host population level. In this talk\, I will first present some of my group’s recent work on using SARS-CoV-2 sequence data to infer early viral invasion dynamics into a region when viral genetic diversity is still extremely limited. I will then present our research focused on using SARS-CoV-2 sequence data from established transmission pairs to quantify natural exposure doses and therewith to assess the plausibility that dose could impact the severity of a COVID infection.

DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nAlex John London\, PhD\nProfessor of Ethics and Philosophy\nDirector of the Center for Ethics and Policy at Carnegie Mellon University\nExplainability Is Not the Solution to Structural Challenges to AI in Medicine \n\nExplainability is often treated as a necessary condition for ethical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine. In this brief talk I survey some of the structural challenges facing the development and deployment of effective AI systems in health care to illustrate some of the limitations to explainability in addressing these challenges. This talk builds on prior work (London 2019\, 2022) to illustrate how ambitions for AI in health care likely require significant changes to key aspects of health systems. \n\nMelissa McCradden\, PhD\, MHSc\nDirector of AI in Medicine\nThe Hospital for Sick Children\nOn the Inextricability of Explainability from Ethics: Explainable AI does not Ethical AI Make\n\nExplainability is embedded into a plethora of legal\, professional\, and regulatory guidelines as it is often presumed that an ethical use of AI will require explainable algorithms. There is considerable controversy\, however\, as to whether post hoc explanations are computationally reliable\, their value for decision-making\, and the relational implications of their use in shared decision-making. This talk will explore the literature across these domains and argue that while post hoc explainability may be a reasonable technical goal\, it should not be offered status as a moral standard by which AI use is judged to be ‘ethical.’

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: “Soft Microfluidic Analysis Systems for the Skin”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nTITLE:\nSoft Microfluidic Analysis Systems for the Skin\n\nABSTRACT:\nRecent advances in materials science\, chemical engineering and mechanics design establish the foundations for high performance classes of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technologies that have physical properties matched those of the human skin. The resulting devices can integrate with the surface of the skin in a water-tight yet physically imperceptible fashion\, to provide real-time measurements of sweat rate and total sweat loss\, along with continuous\, clinical-quality biochemical information on physiological status using a combination of colorimetric and electrochemical techniques. This talk summarizes the key ideas and presents application examples in sports performance\, worker safety\, medical diagnostics and nutritional monitoring.\n\nBIO:\nProfessor John A. Rogers obtained BA and BS degrees in chemistry and in physics from the University of Texas\, Austin\, in 1989. From MIT\, he received SM degrees in physics and in chemistry in 1992 and the PhD degree in physical chemistry in 1995. From 1995 to 1997\, Rogers was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard University Society of Fellows. He joined Bell Laboratories as a Member of Technical Staff and then served as Director of the Condensed Matter Physics Research Department from 1997 to 2002. He then spent thirteen years on the faculty at University of Illinois\, most recently as the Swanlund Chair Professor and Director of the Seitz Materials Research Laboratory. In the Fall of 2016\, he joined Northwestern University where he is Director of the recently endowed Querrey-Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics. His research has been recognized by many awards\, including a MacArthur Fellowship (2009)\, the Lemelson-MIT Prize (2011)\, the Smithsonian Award for American Ingenuity in the Physical Sciences (2013)\, the Benjamin Franklin Medal from the Franklin Institute (2019)\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2021). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, the National Academy of Sciences\, the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar: No equations\, no variables\, no parameters\, no space\, no time: Data and the modeling of complex systems
DESCRIPTION:Yannis Kevrekidis\nBloomberg Distinguished Professor\nChemical and Biomolecular Engineering \nApplied Mathemetics and Statistics \nMedical School\nJohns Hopkins University\nEmeritus\, Princeton Unviersity\n\nAbout the seminar:\nObtaining predictive dynamical equations from data lies at the heart of science and engineering modeling\, and is the linchpin of our technology. In mathematical modeling one typically progresses from observations of the world (and some serious thinking!) first to equations for a model\, and then to the analysis of the model to make predictions. Good mathematical models give good predictions (and inaccurate ones do not) - but the computational tools for analyzing them are the same: algorithms that are typically based on closed form equations.\n \nWhile the skeleton of the process remains the same\, today we witness the development of mathematical techniques that operate directly on observations -data-\, and appear to circumvent the serious thinking that goes into selecting variables and parameters and deriving accurate equations. The process then may appear to the user a little like making predictions by looking in a crystal ball.\n \nOur work here presents a couple of efforts that illustrate this \"new” path from data to predictions. One will be in discovering emergent spaces\, in which initially disorganized data can be modeled \"easier\, better\, faster.\"\nThe second will be in finding transformations across different models of the same phenomenon - deciding when two systems can be thought of as different observations of the same problem. The third (time permitting) will be in automating the generation of optimal algorithms.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nYannis Kevrekidis studied Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University in Athens. He then followed the steps of many alumni of that department to the University of Minnesota\, where he studied with Rutherford Aris and Lanny Schmidt (as well as Don Aronson and Dick McGehee in Math). He was a Director's Fellow at the Center for Nonlinear Studies in Los Alamos in 1985-86 (when Soviets still existed and research funds were plentiful). He then had the good fortune of joining the faculty at Princeton\, where he taught Chemical Engineering and also Applied and Computational Mathematics for 31 years\; four years ago he became Emeritus and started fresh at Johns Hopkins (where he somehow is also Professor of Urology). His work always had to do with nonlinear dynamics (from instabilities and bifurcation algorithms to spatiotemporal patterns to data science in the 90s\, nonlinear identification\, multiscale modeling\, and back to data science/ML)\; and he had the additional good fortune to work with several truly talented experimentalists\, like G. Ertl's group in Berlin. When young and promising\, he was a Packard Fellow\, a Presidential Young Investigator and the Ulam Scholar at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He holds the Colburn\, CAST and Wilhelm Awards of the AIChE\, the Crawford and the Reid Prizes of SIAM\, is a member of the NAE\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and the Academy of Athens.\n\nBoeing Lecture Hall (1109 FXB) and Zoom \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91746715474

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Using genetic data at multiple scales to understand constraints on viral adaptation
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract: \nRNA viruses have exceptionally high mutation rates\, on the order of one new mutation per replication cycle. These mutation rates are frequently invoked to explain the ability of these viruses to rapidly adapt to new or changing environmental conditions\, such as changes in host immunity profiles for endemic viruses such as influenza and changes in host species in the case of spillover viruses. Here\, I will instead focus on the evolutionary constraints to viral adaptation that are brought about by high mutation rates in the context of spatial within-host viral compartmentalization\, transmission bottlenecks between infectors and infectees\, and genetic linkage across viral genomes. I will also discuss means of population-level viral adaptation that are accessible in the context of these constraints. The empirical examples I will draw on will include influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Benjamin Lynch will give a talk entitled \"Magnetic Reconnection in the Solar Corona: Consequences for the Generation of the Slow Solar Wind and its Variability\" at 3:30 pm\, Thursday\, Oct. 20 in CSRB 2246. The seminar will also be available on Zoom. Visit the website for details.\n\n\nAbstract:\nConnecting the solar wind observed throughout the heliosphere to its origins in the solar corona is one of the central aims of heliophysics and a fundamental science objective of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter missions. The slow solar wind exhibits significant variability on relatively short timescales\, from minutes to days. It has been argued that this variability in the magnetic field\, bulk plasma\, and heavy ion composition properties of the slow wind are the result of magnetic reconnection processes in the extended solar corona. In this presentation\, I will review some basic properties of the large-scale coronal flux systems associated with the intermittent release of closed-field plasma onto open field lines via interchange reconnection in terms of the so-called Separatrix-Web (S-Web) framework for describing the magnetic field connectivity. I will then present some recent analysis of the solar wind from 2003 April 15 to May 13 (Carrington Rotation 2002) in order to illustrate that intervals of slow-to-moderate speed wind with enhanced variability and ionic composition signatures can be related to specific S-Web topological structures in the corona. Specifically\, there are four pseudostreamer wind intervals and two heliospheric current sheet/plasma sheet crossings (and an ICME) which all exhibit enhanced alpha-to-proton ratios and elevated ionic charge states of carbon\, oxygen\, and iron. Finally\, I will briefly discuss the implications of these results for competing solar wind models\, recent PSP observations\, and the potential for PSP and Solar Orbiter joint observational campaigns

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DISCO Network Lecture Series | Racial Replication: Michelle N. Huang in Conversation with Lisa Nakamura and Huan He
DESCRIPTION:Asiatic interchangeability is made\, not born. In her talk\, Michelle N. Huang discusses how dystopian clone narratives challenge notions of individual racialized identity at both the genetic and generic levels. Drawing on Saidiya Hartman’s concept of racial fungibility\, Huang will examine Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005) and Larissa Lai’s Salt Fish Girl (2002) to trace how Asian American interchangeability is produced through reproductive control as well as an economy of character. In rearticulating\, rather than rejecting\, notions of shared subjectivity\, hivemind\, and fellow feeling\, Asiatic clones ask for experimental alternatives to the ethnic bildungsroman and demonstrate the novel form itself to be a racialized technology of identity.\n\nMichelle N. Huang is an Assistant Professor of English and Asian American Studies at Northwestern University. She has research and teaching interests in contemporary Asian American literature\, posthumanism\, and feminist science studies. Her current project\, Molecular Race\, examines posthumanist aesthetics in post-1965 Asian American literature to trace racial representation and epistemology at nonhuman\, minute scales. Molecular Race argues that a rapprochement with scientific discourse is necessary to fully grasp how the formal and aesthetic qualities of Asian American literature unsettle sedimented structures of racial formation.\n\nMichelle’s work appears in American Literature\, Contemporary Literature\, Twentieth-Century Literature\, Journal of Asian American Studies\, Amerasia\, and Post 45: Contemporaries\, among other venues. Her film essay\, INHUMAN FIGURES: Robots\, Clones\, and Aliens can be viewed online at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center website.\n\nLisa Nakamura is the Gwendolyn Calvert Baker Collegiate Professor of American Culture and Digital Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of several books on race\, gender\, and the Internet. She is the founding Director of the Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan and the Lead P.I. for the DISCO (Digital Inquiry\, Speculation\, Collaboration and Optimism) Network (disconetwork.org).\n\nHuan He is a Curriculum Development Fellow at the DISCO Network Michigan Hub and holds a PhD in American Studies and Ethnicity from the University of Southern California. Most broadly\, his research engages Asian/American literature and culture\, histories of media and technology\, visual culture\, digital game studies\, and poetics. His book project\, currently titled\, “The Racial Interface\,” explores the racial associations linking Asian/Americans and information technology in the digital era. Drawing from literature\, art\, and archival sources\, this project reveals how myths of racial and technological progress converge in the shadow of U.S. liberal capitalism. He foregrounds minoritarian writers and artists who challenge the dominant technological imaginaries shaping the digital present. He is also interested in the relationship between race\, gaming\, cheating\, and scams and pursuing a second project on these topics. His scholarly writing has been published in College Literature: A Journal of Critical Literary Studies and Media-N and is forthcoming in an anthology on Asian/American game studies. In Fall 2023\, he will start as an Assistant Professor of English (Asian American and Asian Diasporic Literature) at Vanderbilt University. \n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. This event will be a hybrid event with both a physical meeting space and an online meeting space. Please register in advance for the online Zoom Webinar here: https://bit.ly/3CcvgFL\n\nPlease register for the physical meeting space at the University of Michigan’s Central Campus: https://bit.ly/3R2S3bG\n\nWe will have automated captions. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Quetzal Crosses the Pacific: Bridging Asian and Latin American Studies
DESCRIPTION:In 1579\, a group of Franciscan Friars entered Ming China with the intention of establishing a Catholic mission in the country. They brought with them several objects of indigenous Mexican manufacture that proved fascinating to the Ming literati who interviewed them. As far as we know\, this is the first time that people in China came into contact with the material culture of colonial Spanish America. To understand the incident\, we must step out of the mutually exclusive siloes of Asian and colonial Latin American studies\, and question the spatiotemporal assumptions that underpin much of Pacific studies. Yet the incident does not just require us to transgress institutionalized boundaries governing research: it also provokes questions about the usefulness of a past that is all too easily reduced to an antiquarian curiosity.\n\nRicardo Padrón is a professor in the Department of Spanish\, Italian\, and Portuguese at the University of Virginia\, where he teaches classes on Hispanic literature and culture\, and conducts research on the geopolitical imagination of the early modern Hispanic world\, as expressed in cartography and literature. His work has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He recently served as a visiting professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales\, and currently serves on the governing board of the Renaissance Society of America.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Navigating a Post-Roe America: Insights\, lessons\, and reflections after a decade leading in the reproductive justice movement
DESCRIPTION:**THIS EVENT WILL NOW ONLY BE PRESENTED ON ZOOM WEBINAR**\n\nIn the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade\, Americans everywhere are strategizing and mobilizing to protest and challenge the abolishment of the right to abortion care. These actions are necessary and important\, though it is often forgotten that even when Roe was in place\, abortion care for many women still was not adequate. \n\nThis talk will examine the realities of reproductive health care for women before the end of Roe\, where we are now\, in the post-Roe era\, and what strategies we need to employ going forward in anticipation of the erosion of even more rights.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nYamani Yansá Hernandez has been working at the vanguard of the sexual and reproductive health\, rights\, and justice movements for the last decade. From 2011-2015\, she was the Executive Director of the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health (ICAH)\, a reproductive justice organization focusing on adolescent sexual health\, rights\, and identities. Most recently\, Ms. Hernandez was the first Black Executive Director of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF)\, overseeing the membership\, technical assistance\, and advocacy for over 80 grassroots organizations that fund abortion and build the cultural and political power to ensure that the legal right to abortion remains a reality. Under her leadership\, the staff increased from 12 to 60\; the budget grew from $2 million to $20 million\; and the organization cultivated an approach to their work based on an ethos of justice and care. Ms. Hernandez holds a B.S. from Cornell University and an M. Arch. from the University of Washington\, and is currently writing a memoir.\n\nCosponsorship provided by the CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.\n\nREGISTER FOR THE ZOOM WEBINAR: https://myumi.ch/e6Ven

DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Dr. Shayna Sheinfeld\; Q&A with Sara Parks and Meredith J.C. Warren\n\nHow do we remember Jewish and Christian women in the ancient world? Are they merely passive\, accepting what comes at them\, or do they have agency in a patriarchal imperialist world? This talk explores several examples of Jewish and Christian women’s resistance—against patriarchy\, imperialism\, and even their own families—in order to demonstrate the diverse ways that women effected change in the world of ancient Judaism and Christianity.\n\nThis is a hybrid event. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spinal cord stimulation to restore sensation and reduce phantom limb pain after limb amputation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDespite important advances in the design of prosthetic devices\, loss of a limb causes major challenges that often limit participation in activities of daily living. For people with upper-limb amputation\, prosthetic adoption rates remain poor and device control is often unintuitive. Those with lower-limb amputation experience impaired balance control\, abnormal gait\, and an increased rate of falls. Across both groups\, upwards of 85% of people also experience debilitating phantom limb pain. All these problems can be attributed\, in part\, to the loss of sensory feedback from the limb after amputation. In this talk\, I will present our research efforts focused on development of devices to stimulate the spinal cord to restore sensory feedback in people with limb amputation. Using devices that are currently implanted in over 50\,000 people every year to treat chronic pain\, we have demonstrated that spinal cord stimulation can evoke sensations in the missing limb to improve control of prosthetic limbs and reduce phantom limb pain in people with both upper- and lower-limb amputation.\n\nBio:\nLee Fisher is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of Education for the Rehab Neural Engineering Labs. Dr. Fisher received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University\, where his research focused on the use of electrical stimulation to restore standing after spinal cord injury. He was a post-doctoral scholar at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the faculty in 2013. Dr. Fisher was the 2021 recipient of the North American Neuromodulation Society’s Kumar New Investigator Award for his research focused on sensory restoration in people with limb amputation. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering and Guest Editor of Frontiers in Pain Research.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Film Screening:BLI presents: The Color of Care
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 20\, the BLI is hosting an in person screening of The Color of Care\, followed by a conversation where we will discuss the film and talk about how we can mobilize to combat racism in healthcare with community leaders from New Detroit (Rebecca Irby)\, Packard Health (Oryanna Diem)\, and the School of Public Health (Becky Woolf). \n\nThe Color of Care chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare. COVID-19 exposed what they have long understood and lived: they do not receive the same level of care. Produced by Ms. Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Yance Ford\, the film traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery and continue today. Using moving personal testimony\, expert interviews\, and disturbing data\, the film reveals the impact of racism on health\, serving as an urgent warning of what must be done to save lives.\n\n5:15 PM: Doors\n5:30 PM: Screening \n7:00 PM: Community Chat\n\nFREE

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Movie Night@The Detroit Observatory: The Moving Earth
DESCRIPTION:On October 6\, the Detroit Observatory will host a discussion of the discovery that the University's prized manuscript attributed to Galileo\, which discusses his discovery of moons of Jupiter\, is in fact a 20th-century forgery.  As a follow-up\, join us on October 20 to learn more about the historical context of Galileo's astronomical accomplishments through a showing of the acclaimed documentary\, The Moving Earth\, by Danish film-maker Lars Becker-Larsen.  The Moving Earth (2009\, 52 minutes\, in English) recounts the history of early modern astronomy\, focusing on five key figures: Tycho Brahe\, Giordano Bruno\, Johannes Kepler\, Galileo Galilei\, and Isaac Newton.  Weaving together historical vignettes and scientific explanations\, the movie locates key scientific advances within the biographies of its subjects and the religious\, social and political developments of the time.\n\nFollowing the film\, we will offer relevant exhibits and tours of the historic Detroit Observatory with astronomical observing if weather permits.  In particular\, Jupiter and its Galilean moons will be in view!
