These stars cannot individually be observed by the JWST telescope\, but HREXI imaging CZT arrays can readily detect their extremely luminous (in X-\, Gamma-rays) GRBs and provide measurements of the epoch (in redshift) of these very first massive stars that ionized the Universe. This talk will be mainly about the CdZnTe (CZT) detectors and their readout from 3 - 300 keV for imaging and spectra.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Telling half a story: A Mixed Methods Approach to Understanding Culturally Relevant Engineering Education in Nigeria and the United States
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, the United States maintained its reputation as a destination of choice for international students around the globe. More than 80% of them are pursuing advanced degrees in STEM (Institute of International Education\, 2021). Unfortunately\, many of these international students come in only to experience loneliness\, social disconnectedness\, and a crisis of identity the longer they stay in their respective programs. The commitment to diversify and attract international students to US institutions must be followed by a clear understanding of what it takes to support these students. Among the myriad of international students that enter the US for higher education every year\, I am particularly interested in the experiences of African international students. Is their performance in US higher education exclusively tied to their educational backgrounds or does it stem from a motivation to succeed in a different environment despite the odds? What might we learn about how engineering is taught in their home countries? In this study\, I attempt to address these questions by designing a comparative case study using mixed methods\, theoretically informed by culturally relevant pedagogy surrounding two contexts. This study poses the question of culture as an integral intrinsic aspect of learning\, leveraging a socio-psychological framework to help understand how students receive support from their instructors to excel in engineering. In this presentation\, I discuss emerging results of my studies investigating culturally relevant engineering education in Nigeria.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: \"Pressed Against My Own Glass\" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MORE (FACULTY) Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This virtual session helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/mxExm.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/n8b78.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Clements Bookworm: Fundraising has a history you can tell through Objects with Amanda Moniz
DESCRIPTION:We know the names of major givers in American history. We recognize the power of the everyday philanthropists who have shaped and reshaped the nation. But we have largely overlooked the stories of people who have done the hard work of raising money for charitable causes from the colonial era to today. Yet fundraising has a history and Amanda Moniz is working to tell it as she builds the Smithsonian’s new philanthropy collection.\n\nAmanda B. Moniz\, Ph.D.\, is the David M. Rubenstein Curator of Philanthropy at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. She curates a long-term exhibit\, Giving in America\, and is building the Smithsonian's collection of objects telling stories about Americans' historical experiences of giving\, fundraising\, and working in and using charitable institutions. Her book\, From Empire to Humanity: The American Revolution and the Origins of Humanitarianism\, was awarded ARNOVA’S inaugural Peter Dobkin Hall History of Philanthropy Book Prize. She is currently working on a biography of Isabella Graham\, an immigrant widow who transformed philanthropy in early national New York\, and is grateful to the Clements Library for supporting research in its collections about Graham. Moniz received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan in 2008\, and during graduate school\, she worked at the Clements as a curatorial assistant in the Manuscript Division.\n\nThis episode of the Clements Bookworm is generously sponsored by Kristin Cabral ‘88\, Member of the Clements Library Associates Board.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Four of the Thirteen Lives Are Stateless: The Cave Rescue\, Hollywood Heroism and Ethnonational Traps at the Thai-Burma Border
DESCRIPTION:\"In 2018\, the world news watchers were captivated by the real-life rescue of the boys’ soccer team\, the Wild Boars\, from deep within the labyrinth of Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province\, Thailand. The amazing story was ripe for the plucking\, with suspense\, drama\, and a happy ending. Just 4 years later\, Hollywood director Ron Howard released the movie Thirteen Lives\, with professed dedication to contextual authenticity. Moving from the heroic story itself\, this presentation will consider ethno-nationalist discourse\, and how Thai-ness is visible\, assumed\, or glossed over\, depending on the situation. Does it matter if we emphasize their regional identity? Their Shan-ness? How are the boys trapped in the cave different from Shan construction workers? Can discussion of the amazing story\, even the Hollywood film\, prompt discussion about citizenship law reform? In addition to considering the framing of Ron Howard’s movie in light of these questions\, this presentation draws upon ethnographic discussion of everyday statelessness in Thailand\, as presented in my recent book Repossessing Shanland: Myanmar\, Thailand\, and a Nation-State Deferred.\n\nJane Ferguson is an Associate Professor in the School of Culture\, History and Language at the College of Asia and the Pacific\, Australian National University. She received her PhD and MA from Cornell University.\n\nRegister at: http://myumi.ch/xd4pd

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Geographic Imaginaries: Mapping Space\, People\, and Historical Mentalities
DESCRIPTION:Space is a category which is mapped\, molded\, and given meaning by social processes\, political agendas\, cosmological beliefs\, and epistemological assumptions. Projects of mapping are manifestations of power and so can also become the site of resistance\, negotiation\, and contestation. Acts of defiance\, negotiation\, and incorporation effectively re-map the topography of human relations and recast the terms of inclusion and belonging. This EIHS workshop brings together graduate students working across time periods and geographic regions to discuss how space is historically and culturally framed\, exploring what types of historical narratives are engendered or retrieved by examining cartographic sources and attempting to access geographic imaginaries of the past.\n\nPanelists:\n• Noah Cashian (PhD Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\n• Ismael Pardo (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Lediona Shahollari (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Zoe Waldman (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Kenneth Mills\, moderator (J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics of cellular proportions
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Gulliver noticed 140 years ago that the size of the cell\'s nucleus is proportional to the size of the cell. In the intervening years\, similar observations have been made about other\, large structures that self-assemble in the cell. This raises a fascinating question: How does the cell\, which is micrometers in length\, measure its size with nothing more at its disposal than nanometer-sized proteins that diffuse\, on occasion bump into each other\, and transiently stick together? In this talk I will describe quantitative experiments and related theory that reveal general principles of how cells control the size of their internal structures. The case of self-assembly of actin cables in budding yeast is particularly interesting in this context\, as it provides an example of a structure whose size is well matched to the size of the cell. I will describe experiments and theory pertaining to actin cables\, and the general principles of cellular self-assembly we are learning from this model system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Politics\, Policy\, and Poverty: Medical Debt and Other Financial Reforms
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 21 at noon\nSchool of Social Work\, ECC 1840\n\nRepresentative Rashida Tlaib is an American politician and lawyer serving as the U.S. representative for Michigan’s 13th congressional district since 2019. The district includes the western half of Detroit\, along with several of its western suburbs and much of the Downriver area. A member of the Democratic Party\, Tlaib represented the 6th and 12th districts of the Michigan House of Representatives before her election to Congress. After serving\, she worked at Sugar Law Center\, a Detroit nonprofit that provides free legal representation for workers. In Congress\, Tlaib is tackling one of the most significant drivers of poverty in our country – medical debt. With eight million Americans pushed into poverty due to medical expenses in 2018\, Tlaib introduced The Consumer Protection for Medical Debt Collections Act (H.R. 2537)\, which would prohibit the collection of medical debt for two years\, as well as debt from “medically necessary” procedures being included on one’s credit report. It passed the House in 2021 as part of a Comprehensive Debt Collection Act.\n\nThe talks\, which are free and open to the public\, will also be livestreamed on YouTube. U-M students can participate in the series as a one-credit course - look for it as SWK 503 section 001.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Interconnected: An SLC Pixel Project
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 2019\, the SLC partnered with artist and U-M alumnus Doug Jones on an inclusive and collaborative art project involving U-M students and staff. Doug specializes in all-inclusive\, collaborative design and invented his PIXEL Technique used in much of his work. Several years ago\, Doug worked with the U-M Library on a similar project\, Connect the Dots: Collective Interpretations from the U-M Library Collections\, from 2018-2019. U-M Library published a video describing that project and Doug's approach. You can also view the online exhibit or see the works in person in the Shapiro Undergraduate and Hatcher Graduate libraries.\n\nThis fall\, the SLC will unveil the four art pieces created in collaboration with Doug and over 50 U-M student and staff co-creators. The special open house will be revealed as part of the newly renovated Science Learning Center. We have worked closely with our partners in LSA facilities to plan and implement renovations that go beyond aesthetic and infrastructure improvements\, but focus on making the physical space more welcoming and inclusive. This artwork will be a critical component of our transformed space.\n\nRSVP required by Friday\, October 21 at 12:00 noon.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Covariant prescriptions for holographic entanglement
DESCRIPTION:In the holographic setting of gauge/gravity duality\, there has been a growing expectation that the emergence of the bulk gravitational spacetime is rooted in the entanglement structure of the dual gauge theory. While the deep connection remains mysterious\, an early hint came from the holographic entanglement entropy prescription\, which expresses the boundary entanglement entropy in terms of simple geometric constructs in the bulk. This talk will review the recent reformulations of this prescription presented in [2208.10507] in terms of several new (and fully covariant) formulas\, including minimax\, max U-flow\, and min V-flow (the latter covariantizing the bit thread formulation of holographic entanglement entropy by Freedman and Headrick).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2022 Borer Lecture with Dr. Andrea Hevener
DESCRIPTION:You're invited to the 2022 Katarina T. Borer Lectureship in Exercise Endocrinology & Metabolism on Friday\, October 21. Dr. Andrea Hevener\, professor and chair of Molecular Energy at the UCLA School of Medicine\, will present \"Estrogen Receptor Alpha (Esr1) Keeps Mitochondria In Shape—Strong Enough For A Man\, But Made For A Woman.\" \n\n*Abstract:* Sex differences in metabolic disease risk and incidence are well-described. Females show a reduced incidence of metabolic-related disease compared with males. However\, this female-biased protection is lost during the menopausal transition. To gain mechanistic insight into the genetic drivers underlying the impact of biological sex on metabolism\, we have interrogated multi-omic analyses from numerous human observational trials\, as well as a novel 100-strain mouse panel. We find that skeletal muscle expression of ESR1 (encodes ERa) is positively correlated with insulin sensitivity\, negatively correlated with adiposity\, and reduced in the context of metabolic syndrome in human subjects. Because differences in metabolism between the sexes are often attributed to reproductive hormones\, and because skeletal muscle is a primary tissue responsible for insulin-stimulated glucose disposal\, we interrogated the impact of skeletal muscle-specific Esr1 loss and gain of expression on insulin sensitivity and metabolic health in the context of nutrient and physical activity challenge. The goal of the 2022 Borer Lecture is to provide a general overview of sex as biological variable in the control metabolism and advance mechanistic insight into the critical role of ERa in the maintenance of metabolic health. In aggregate\, our studies provide improved understanding of the pathobiology of metabolic disease\, and lay the important foundation for enhanced therapeutic targeting of metabolism and insulin sensitivity to prevent or reverse metabolic-related disorders.\n\nThe lecture runs from 3:30-4:30pm in School of Kinesiology Building Room 2600\, followed by a reception from 4:30-5:30pm on the building's 4th floor. RSVP at http://myumi.ch/z15Xn. Zoom webinar option: http://myumi.ch/V74p9. Flyer: http://myumi.ch/1nzVx.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Collegiate Professorship Recognition: Joaquim R. R. A. Martins
DESCRIPTION:Joaquim R. R. A. Martins\nPauline M. Sherman Collegiate Professor\nAerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nAbout this lecture:\nAirplanes are essential in today's world\, and their design is challenging. In this lecture\, I present the developments in my research group that have made it possible to perform design optimization of aircraft based on computational models for aerodynamics\, structures\, and propulsion. The challenges addressed include handling a large number of design variables\, robust and efficient large-scale simulations\, effective geometry and mesh handling\, and efficient discipline coupling. To tackle these issues\, we combine gradient-based optimization algorithms with adjoint gradient computation. The methods we developed to tackle the aerostructural problem are generalized in NASA's OpenMDAO framework\, an open-source framework for multidisciplinary analysis and optimization that can be used to solve more general problems. Life optimization remains an open question\, but one of the keys is to create and maintain a community of people with shared goals.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nJoaquim R. R. A. Martins is the Pauline M. Sherman Collegiate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan\, where he heads the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Laboratory. His research group develops MDO methods and applies them to the design of aircraft and other engineering systems. He is a co-author of \"Engineering Design Optimization\"\, a textbook published by Cambridge University Press. Prof. Martins is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Before joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2009\, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. From 2002\, he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Multidisciplinary Optimization. He received his undergraduate degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College\, London\, with a British Aerospace Award. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University\, where he was awarded the Ballhaus prize for best thesis in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has received the Best Paper Award at AIAA Conferences five times. He has served as Associate Editor for the AIAA Journal\, Optimization and Engineering\, and Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Aircraft.\n\n\nAbout Prof. Pauline M. Sherman:\nPauline Sherman was the first female Professor of Aerospace Engineering at UM and the first woman to be appointed as a professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan.\n\nBorn in New York City in 1921 to parents who emigrated from Russia\, Sherman received her B.S.E in engineering mechanics from U-M in 1952. In 1953 she earned an M.S.E. degree in mechanical engineering at the University of California\, Berkeley\, where she also worked as a research engineer.\n\nIn 1956 Sherman returned to U-M as an associate research engineer at the Department of Aerospace Engineering and worked on problems in hypersonic flow and other related research. She joined the department as an assistant professor in 1960\; becoming the first woman faculty member in the College of Engineering. Her research work was outstanding\, colleagues say\, and she was promoted to associate professor in 1963 and professor in 1971.\n\nSherman taught both theoretical and laboratory courses in aerodynamics and propulsion. She conducted fundamental research in jet noise\, low-density flows\, two-phase flows and especially hypersonic flows. She was supervisor for the design and construction of a hypersonic “hot-shot” wind tunnel. This involved a great deal of responsibility because of the high energies involved. At the time this wind tunnel was completed it was a unique facility in the country.\n\nIn addition to her academic responsibilities\, Sherman presented lectures on hypersonic facilities in Europe on a NATO-AGARD lecture tour. She also consulted with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Lawrence Livermore Berkeley Laboratories. She also served on the Advisory Committee for Women in Science. She was elected to serve on Michigan Faculty Assembly\, the Rackham Graduate School Science Board and the Faculty Senate Advisory Review Committee. After her retirement in 1987\, Sherman did volunteer work for the American Civil Liberties Union.\n\nZoom Webinar - https://umich.zoom.us/j/96201299770
