SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Register: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aa5QhNHRV9bA3ZQ?jfefe=new\n\nWhat if your sex ed class included asexuality? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Watershed brings recent work from sixteen contemporary artists to UMMA for an exhibition that immerses visitors in the interconnected histories\, present lives\, and imagined futures of the Great Lakes region.\n \nSome of these artists give voice to the experiences of communities that have been marginalized\, making personal and visceral the social\, economic\, and political relationships among people\, water\, and land. Others use water as part of their process—whether photography\, painting\, sculpture—to provoke reflection on its ineffable effects on our bodies\, language\, and lives. All demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the critical problems confronting our region.\n \nThis exhibition will feature new commissions from those listed below as well as works by Dawoud Bey\, Pope L\, LaToya Ruby Fraizer\, Cai Guo-Qiang\, Doug Fogelson\, Matthew Brandt\, and Senghor Reid.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Susan and Richard Gutow\, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability\, Graham Sustainability Institute\, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman\, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.  \n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Jacopo Bassano and the Flood of Feltre
DESCRIPTION:Painted by the Venetian artist-engineer Jacopo Bassano in 1576\, The Flood of the Colmeda commemorates the 1564 inundation of a small town in the mountains to the north of Venice. Adopting an ecocritical perspective\, this paper argues that Bassano’s painting evokes period speculation about the potential human causes of flooding on the Venetian mainland. This argument in turn suggests that the artist's rustic style was a response not only to the taste for pastoral imagery in the city of Venice\, but also to mounting concerns regarding the deleterious environmental effects of aggressive agricultural expansion throughout the Venetian empire.
