Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \r\n\r\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \r\n\r\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine research has identified a group of individuals who first develop alcohol dependence in middle adulthood. However, the existing literature concerning this group is limited by reliance on retrospective recall, use of selected samples, failure to evaluate early-life predictors, and consideration of a limited range of psychosocial and diagnostic correlates. We addressed these gaps through a comprehensive prospective analysis of the developmental epidemiology of midlife-onset alcohol dependence. Using data from a population-representative birth cohort followed to age 45, we tested prospective predictors and adult correlates of midlife-onset alcohol dependence. Results indicated that the prevalence of midlife-onset alcohol dependence was approximately 5%. Individuals with midlife-onset alcohol dependence were characterized by a family history of alcohol dependence, dysregulation in adolescence, internalizing disorders and life-functioning impairment in adulthood, and reduced preparedness to manage later-life demands. These findings advance our understanding of the developmental profile of midlife-onset alcohol dependence, with implications to improve the early identification and prevention of alcohol-related problems in middle adulthood.\r\n\r\nBezek:\u00a0Functional Brain Network Organization and Multi-domain Resilience to Neighborhood Disadvantage in Youth\u00a0\r\n\r\nResilience is a dynamic process defined as the ability to adapt positively in the face of adversity. Though a few recent studies have identified neural markers of resilience in cognitive and affective networks, limited work has been done in this area, and the broader network organization supporting resilient outcomes in youth remains unknown. Additionally, most previous work defines resilience as the absence of psychopathology, which does not account for behavioral research showing that resilience exists across multiple domains (e.g., social and academic). The present study utilized factor analytic and graph theoretical approaches to examine the functional brain network organization associated with multi-domain resilience (i.e., psychological, social, and academic resilience) in a sample of 704 twins from neighborhoods with above average levels of poverty. Multi-level models revealed differences in brain network organization at the whole-brain and network-specific levels across unique resilience domains. In youth with the highest levels of risk exposure, greater psychological resilience (i.e., better psychological functioning) was associated with reduced whole-brain network integration. Youth with high levels of risk exposure also exhibited an association between greater academic resilience and reduced network-level integration, specifically in a brain network involved in cognitive control. Within each university, student numbers also rose, and shorter two-year diplomas were also introduced in an effort to raise revenue. Access to higher education expanded dramatically, but administrators and academics struggled to maintain educational quality and to protect the value of their qualifications in the labour market. Sudan\u2019s experience reflects broader trends within the Middle East and Africa, in part driven by the World Bank\u2019s \u2018rate of return\u2019 calculations, which de-prioritized public spending on higher education. But the policy also emerged from Sudan\u2019s own political economy, with a new regime seeking to weaken sectarian control over elite reproduction through universities and state employment. This talk explores some of the long-term consequences of these changes for economic development and politics in Sudan, and situates the country\u2019s experience within broader regional trends.\r\n \r\nSaeid Golkar, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (USA): *Higher Education in Authoritarian Context: Iran as a case study*\r\n\r\nThis is a study of state and Universities relationship in modern Iran. Despite the constant suppression of students by Pahlavi monarchy, students were actively engaged in anti-regime activities and, in collaboration with other social groups, finally brought the regime down in 1979. However, the Islamic Republic has seen fewer regime-threatening protests from university students. Why did the Pahlavi monarchy fail while the Islamic Republic succeeded in controlling the universities? What are the differences between the Pahlavi monarchy and the Islamic Republic's higher education policies?\r\n \r\nSpeaker Bios:\r\nMuez Ali is a Doctoral Researcher at the UCL Energy Institute and Research Associate at LSE CPAID. His research interests and work span several cross-cutting fields, including public service provision, climate change, social policy and knowledge production in Sub-Saharan Africa in general and Sudan in particular.\r\n \r\nLaura Mann is an assistant professor in the International Development Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and an affiliate of the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, also at the LSE. Her research explores the role of knowledge and technology in processes of economic development and international divergence, with a particular focus on higher education policy and digitization. Her doctoral work focused on the expansion of higher education in Sudan but since then has worked on digitization and development in Sudan, Kenya and Rwanda.\r\n\r\nSaeid Golkar is a UC Foundation Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is also a non-resident senior fellow on Middle East Policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA) and The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in the UK. He received his PhD in political science in 2008. Since then, he's held a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and researched and taught at Northwestern Universit and served as a fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His research focuses on the international and comparative politics of authoritarian regimes, emphasizing the Middle East and North Africa. These statements are also common in child-directed speech. Although past research has focused on the positive evidence that justifies a generic, little work has explored the role of counterevidence\u2014that is, category members that are exceptions. Our recent work aims to understand (1) how different types of counterexamples may differentially influence whether generic statements are accepted, and (2) whether listeners have expectations about counterexamples, when presented with generic statements. In this talk I will present novel findings that adults and children were significantly less likely to endorse generic statements when counterexamples displayed an alternative property than when they displayed an absence of the property. These findings suggest that, for children as well as adults, harmful generalizations expressed with generics may be best counteracted by counterexamples that display an alternative property instead of the mere absence of the target property.\u00a0\r\n\r\nYu:\u00a0Where Do Differences in Theory of Mind Development Come from? An Agent-Based Model of Social Interaction and Theory-of-Mind\r\n\r\nTheory of Mind (ToM), the ability to understand others\u2019 internal states, emerges early in life and develops in childhood. Although all humans develop ToM, they do so at different paces: some develop faster and some slower. Where do these differences come from? Social interaction is surely one potent cause. In this presentation, I will use a computational agent-based model (ABM) to demonstrate how social interaction can causally influence ToM development. I will show that the amount of social interaction strongly influences the pace of a group of children to fully develop their individual ToMs and illustrate how the result holds across different group sizes and regardless of whether a child begins with an existing social network or not. We set up the theoretical framework for the model and determine the time evolution of the scale-factor a(t). It is shown that such a universe repeatedly goes through alternate periods of (dark) matter and dark energy domination. The resulting dynamics oscillates about its-would-be ideal time-linear or coasting path, with monotonic expansion. When compared to dynamics of the observed Universe, the model recovers the observationally-established evolutionary features of the latter, from the big bang to the current acceleration, and farther. It suggests a universe that emerges from a non-singular state, associated with a non-exponential acceleration and which it exits naturally with matter-energy production. The model has neither a horizon nor a \u00e1atness problem. It reproduces the standard parameters of the observed universe, including the cosmic age t_0 and the current Hubble (constant) parameter H_0. The model makes some falsiable predictions (consistent with recent observations) and explains some standing issues such as the dimensionless age (H_0 t_0 \\simeq 1) paradox. The \u00d6ndings suggest cosmic dynamics may be self-regulating and predictable. Among the data they created for their study in human genetics was a set of anthropometric photographs\u2014arresting images of faces, posed at five different angles by a physical anthropologist. Over the ensuing decades, the images traveled from Brazil to Germany to the United States, accruing new scientific and social meanings as they were passed from one research group to another. As researchers used these images to correlate data and enable their repeated study of the community and their descendants, their A\u2019uw\u1ebd hosts developed strategies\u2014including affective labor\u2014to shape scientists\u2019 work for their own political purposes. Facilitating the return of the digitized images between 2015 and 2019, I participated in this circulation and the beginning of an A\u2019uw\u1ebd project to reclaim these scientific materials. This talk traces the history of this research by posing the question of return: What does A\u2019uw\u1ebd repossession of these images teach us about how to manage and care for the products of mid-century race science? In their transit and use, the photographs tie together generations of researchers and the people they studied. They also mark the persistence and mutation of race and population science into the twenty-first century.\r\n\r\nRosanna Dent is a historian of the life and human sciences and an assistant professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on how human interactions unfold in the context of knowledge production, and the implications of these relationships for questions of political and social justice. From 2021-2022 she was a member of the School for Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and in 2022 she is a fellow of the ACLS. The team analyzed troves of data using Python and Tableau to create meaningful tools for Michigan Medicine.\r\n\r\nThis project, in collaboration with Michigan Medicine, aims to analyze and suggest strategic supplier partnerships to the University of Michigan Hospital. Michigan Medicine currently partners with over 975 manufacturers and 425 vendors to purchase and store medical supplies for over 200 different product categories. This vendor performance analysis serves to strengthen the Michigan Medicine supply chain recovery and support a new, resilient approach to reviewing purchase order delays and arrivals. Ultimately, this will optimize standards for performance and existing supply chain contracts to help strengthen future contract negotiations.\r\n\r\nMichigan Medicine collaborators provided the CHEPS team with data for all purchase orders from December 2021 to January 2022. With over 100 data fields in the dataset, the first step was to determine which data fields were relevant to our study. Using Python, we then created Sankey diagrams to show product flow from manufacturers to vendors to Michigan Medicine for each category, as well as their associated on-time fill rates. This illustrated the differences between direct and distributed supply chains. Finally, to sustain the value the analysis could provide, a Tableau dashboard was created, highlighting strong and weak supplier performances.\r\n\r\nClear differences emerged between direct vs. distributed supply chain. In direct supply, the items are shipped directly from the manufacturer to Michigan Medicine. In the distributed model, items are sent from the manufacturer to third\u2010party distributor then to Michigan Medicine. This approach has shown to be beneficial for Michigan Medicine. Additionally, we determined that there are many categories of Michigan Medicine items that are supplied by 12+ manufacturers. Consolidation of suppliers improves on\u2010time and full delivery performance. Rationalizing and optimizing the supply base also minimizes product variation and delivery delays, ultimately improving patient safety.\r\n\r\nMichigan Medicine\u2019s experience, like others during COVID, highlighted the criticality of supplier on\u2010time performance. At least three additional flaws emerged, with far broader implications. First, sourcing and contracting practices must elevate on\u2010time performance measures in supplier selection and remediation efforts. Second, providers must redouble their efforts to tighten supply formularies, strengthen strategic supplier partnerships, and rationalize the number of unique SKUs. Lastly, the industry must revisit the bifurcated direct supply vs. distribution model.
