SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

Participants will watch a theatrical case study depicting many different options for ways an instructor might set up teaching challenging material\, meet conflict when it arises\, and follow up with students after conflicts occur. Throughout\, participants will consider how an instructor’s personal commitments and decision-making differently affects the classroom climate\, and opens up possibilities for future action. At the session’s close\, participants will have time to reflect on their own commitments and goals for engaging with conflict in the classroom.\n**The theatrical case study in this session contains strong language and depicts a class engaging with statistics about abortion and larger systemic inequities like transphobia and racism.\nIn our time together\, participants will:\n\nConsider how an instructor’s personal commitments and decision-making matter when teaching challenging material and meeting conflict in the classroom.\nAnalyze practices instructors can use to set up challenging material\, meet (potential) conflict when it occurs\, and follow up after it happens.\nReflect on the ways that different choices affect classroom climate for students and faculty.\nCreate personal goals for engaging with conflicts before\, during\, and after class.\n\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/e652y.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium - Does cognition facilitate the adaptation of wildlife to urban environments? A case study of raccoons
DESCRIPTION:As urban centers around the world have grown over the last 300 years\, biologists have struggled to explain why some species can invade and thrive despite human-induced environmental change whereas others suffer often to the point of extinction. The Cognitive Buffer Hypothesis proposes that the evolution of big brains and advanced cognitive abilities has enabled some species to exhibit more flexible behavioral responses to anthropogenic disturbances. However\, there is a lack of empirical support for this hypothesis due to the challenges of assessing cognition in wild animals. Recently\, my students and I have harnessed technological advances to automatically and adaptively test cognitive abilities of urban mesocarnivores. I will present results from my current research program\, which is focused on studying the cognition\, behavior\, and ecology of urban carnivores (particularly raccoons) to understand how cognition is facilitating adaptation of these species to urban environments. Our results inform our understanding on how some urban wildlife species are able to adapt to life in cities\, which are some of the most extreme novel environments confronted by contemporary wildlife populations. I will also briefly discuss the implications of our results for human-wildlife conflict mitigation efforts in urban environments.\n\n*This talk is sponsored by the Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - Hybrid: Recombination and the evolution of sex chromosomes in Rumex hastatulus
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. \n\nAbstract\nSex chromosomes typically evolve through the gradual reduction of recombination between chromosome pairs that have acquired a sex-determining region. Many plants have \"younger\" sex chromosomes than amniotes\, and therefore offer valuable insight into this process. Heartwing sorrel (Rumex hastatulus) has a polymorphic sex chromosome karyotype resulting from a chromosome fusion. This natural variation allows direct comparison of a sex chromosome and its autosomal homologue. We use a recent genome assembly and genetic map to explore how recombination evolved in this species and how that challenges standard models of sex chromosome evolution. \n\nThis seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page). Contact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for password at least two hours prior to the event.\n\nImage credit: Spencer Barrett

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Jews of Algeria in Light of Modern Studies: Major Trends and New Horizons
DESCRIPTION:Register for this virtual event here: https://myumi.ch/RWq4G\n\nIn this talk\, Amina Boukail outlines the development of contemporary scholarship on Algerian Jews. In doing so\, she offers a critical examination of contemporary research on Algerian Jews in several languages (Arabic\, French\, Hebrew\, English\, and Spanish) in order to demonstrate how scholarship on the history of Algerian Jews has been impact by and has developed in relation to certain historical processes (French colonialism\, postcolonial French-Algerian relations\, the establishment of the State of Israel\, and the Palestinian cause).\n\nAmina Boukail addresses a number of questions: What are the trends in recent studies on the topic of Jews of Algeria? How do other factors impact the writing of Algerian Jewish history? What are some new interdisciplinary avenues of exploration on this topic? Are there sufficient studies compared to the studies that deal with the Jews of Tunisia or Morocco? What topics still remain taboo when it comes to the history of Jews in Algeria?\n\nHer review of the principal currents in the study of Algerian Jews is divided into two sections: First\, the study of Jews in Algeria in France\, the United States\, and Israel\; second\, the study of Jews in Algeria in Algerian universities.\n\n*Amina Boukail* is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Jijel in Algeria. She received her Doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of Annaba in 2016. Her current research interests include: Arabic Medieval literature\; Cultural Contacts in Medieval Iberia\; Cultural Minorities in the Arab world\; Hebrew Cultures in North Africa\; Sephardic Literature and Judeo-Arabic Heritage in Algeria\; Muslim-Jewish relations in Algeria\; Colonialism and Literature.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:From analog to digital and back again
DESCRIPTION:Modern life depends on digital devices\, but our world is analog. Without conversion between analog and digital\, there would be no communication\, sensing\, and computing. Defying expectations\, analog to digital converter circuits (ADCs) improved in energy efficiency by more than three orders of magnitude over 20 years. These improvements paved the way for smart prostheses for Parkinson’s disease\, high-bandwidth wireless connectivity\, digital radar\, and accurate speech recognition in noisy environments. Recently analog circuits aided by analog to digital conversion are upending computing. Eighty years after the dawn of digital computing\, analog computing may power the explosive growth in artificial intelligence.\n\nBIO\nMichael P. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Charge Density Waves in Atomically Thin Transition Metal Dichalcogenides
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91655313495 with the passcode: CM-AMO \n\nUnderstanding complex electronic phases\, such as charge density wave (CDW)\, superconductivity\, exciton condensate\, and Mott insulator\, in two-dimensional (2D) confined geometry offers an interesting perspective toward a comprehensive account of collective electron interactions. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide an ideal platform for investigating how CDW order evolves in a true 2D limit\, often accompanied by competing orders of similar temperature and energy scales. An outstanding question would be how the CDW order evolves as the quantum confinement increases and electron screening reduces with dimensionality approaching 2D and how the competing orders would affect such evolution.\n\nOur approach to this question is to investigate the electronic structure and CDW transition using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES)\, scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS)\, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the TMDC samples grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). For example\, we have found that CDW order persists in single layers of 2H-NbSe2 [1] and 2H-TaSe2 [2] with only a moderate increase in transition temperature despite dramatic changes in the low energy electronic structures and Fermi surface topologies. In 1T-TaSe2\, a robust Mott insulating phase with unusual orbital texture is found in the single layer on top of the well-known star-of-David CDW order [3].\n\nIn this talk\, I will present more recent examples of CDW orders with exotic origins. In monolayer IrTe2\, we have found a large-gap insulating dimer ground state\, in which phonon and charge instabilities\, as well as local bond formation\, collectively enhance and stabilize a charge-ordered ground state [4]. In monolayer ZrTe2\, we have discovered a novel band- and energy-dependent folding behavior in ARPES that results in a two-step CDW\, which we interpret as the formation of excitonic gas and its condensation into a final CDW state [5].\n\n[1] M. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Education\, Reference Points\, and Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Erik Snowberg is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data-Intensive Methods in Economics at the Vancouver School of Economics\, University of British Columbia. Before joining UBC\, he was Professor of Economics and Political Science at Caltech where he was since completing his PhD at Stanford in 2008. His research has two foci: using social science theory to design better experiments that involve people\, with applications in medicine and economic development\; and combining behavioral economics with political economy to better understand the roots of partisan politics and its effects on policy. He holds undergraduate degrees in Math and Physics from MIT. Along with his position at UBC\, he is a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research\, and a Research Fellow at CESifo in Munich.\n\nTitle: Education\, Reference Points\, and Happiness\n\nAbstract: We study a reform that increased compulsory schooling in Britain. Using a regression discontinuity design\, we find that\, in line with prior studies\, compulsory schooling caused an increase in income. However\, it also caused a decrease in subjective well-being\, or happiness. Using an extensive survey\, we provide evidence that education affects both reference points and outcomes\, but the former more than the latter. That is\, while outcomes improve for those subject to compulsory education\, they improve less than the individuals themselves expect they will.
