SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spillovers through Multimarket Firms: The Uniform Product Replacement Channel
DESCRIPTION:We study how regional shocks spill over across US local markets through intrafirm spatial networks created by multimarket firms. We identify spillovers by linking granular data on product-county-level prices and quantities with producer-level information and exploiting variation in firms’ exposure to differential declines in local house prices. A firm’s local sales decrease following a direct negative local demand shock but do so more strongly to indirect negative demand shocks originating in its other markets. Our barcode-level data and multiregion model with endogenous product quality adjustment reveal a novel uniform product replacement mechanism behind the spillover.

SUMMARY:Presentation:ChE SEMINAR: “Bioinspired Thermodynamics of Polyelectrolyte Complex Coacervates”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\nABSTRACT:\nCharged polymers known as polyelectrolytes have been studied for decades\, however understanding their physical properties remains a persistent challenge for polymer scientists. This difficulty stems from the intricate interplay between length scales spanning as much as 3-4 orders of magnitude\, which has stymied our understanding of a truly important class of polymers\; polyelectrolytes are widely used in applications ranging from food additives to paints\, and most biopolymers (proteins\, DNA\, polysaccharides) are also polyelectrolytes. \n\nHowever\, the complexity of charged polymers can be harnessed for molecular-level materials design. Inspired by sequence-specific behaviors in biomolecular condensates\, intracellular structures that assemble in part by electrostatic interactions\, we study phase separation phenomena in sequence-defined polyelectrolytes. We are specifically interested in a class of polyelectrolyte materials known as complex coacervates\, which are aqueous solutions of oppositely-charged macromolecules and salt that can exhibit associative phase separation. We pursue an integrated computational and theoretical study\, in collaboration with experimentalists\, to demonstrate that coacervates are highly sensitive to the precise patterning of charges and other chemical and physical aspects of their environment. We elucidate the key molecular features that play a large role in coacervate thermodynamics. Building upon these insights\, we demonstrate how coacervate phase behavior and assembly can be strongly tuned via specific charge sequences\, pH\, and macroion structure. Ultimately\, our goal is to establish molecular-level design rules to facilitate the tailored creation of materials based on complex coacervation that can both illuminate self-assembly phenomena found in nature\, and find utility across a wide range of real-world applications.\n\nBIO:\nCharles Sing is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his BS and MS in polymer science from Case Western Reserve University in 2008\, and his PhD in materials science from MIT in 2012. Prior to starting at Illinois in 2014\, Charles was a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University. His research interests are broadly in the areas of computational and theoretical polymer physics\; current projects focus on molecular and sequence properties of polyelectrolyte solutions\, out-of-equilibrium rheology of semidilute polymers\, polymers with nonlinear architectures\, and charge and penetrant transport in polymers solutions and networks. He was recognized with an NSF CAREER Award in 2017\, and was selected as one of AIChE’s ’35 Under 35’ and an ACS PMSE Young Investigator in 2020.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar Series: Towards Safe\, Data-Driven Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Marco Pavone\nAssociate Professor\nDepartment of Aeronautics and Astronautics\nStanford University\nDirector of Autonomous Vehicle Research at NVIDIA\n\nAbout the seminar: \nAI-powered autonomous vehicles that can learn\, reason\, and interact with people are no longer science fiction. Self-driving cars\, unmanned aerial vehicles\, and autonomous spacecraft\, among others\, are continually increasing in capability and seeing incremental deployment in more and more domains. However\, fundamental research questions still need to be addressed in order to achieve full and widespread vehicle autonomy. In this talk\, I will discuss our work on addressing key open problems in the field of vehicle autonomy\, particularly in pursuit of safe\, data-driven autonomy stacks. Specifically\, I will discuss (1) robust human prediction models for both simulation and real-time decision making\, (2) AI safety frameworks for autonomous systems\, and (3) novel\, highly integrated autonomy architectures that are amenable to end-to-end training while retaining a modular\, interpretable structure. The discussion will be grounded in autonomous driving and aerospace robotics applications.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Marco Pavone is an Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University\, where he is the Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory and Co-Director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford. He is currently on a partial leave of absence at NVIDIA serving as Director of Autonomous Vehicle Research. Before joining Stanford\, he was a Research Technologist within the Robotics Section at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010. His main research interests are in the development of methodologies for the analysis\, design\, and control of autonomous systems\, with an emphasis on self-driving cars\, autonomous aerospace vehicles\, and future mobility systems. He is a recipient of a number of awards\, including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Barack Obama\, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award\, a National Science Foundation Early Career (CAREER) Award\, a NASA Early Career Faculty Award\, and an Early-Career Spotlight Award from the Robotics Science and Systems Foundation. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Genomics to improve management of imperiled wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nAnthropogenic land and other resource use is a major force shaping the abundance\, distribution\, and evolution of species. It often disrupts historically contiguous habitats\, resulting in patchier and smaller fragments which can limit dispersal and gene flow. Populations experiencing such conditions can face elevated risks for inbreeding depression and diminished adaptive capacity. Wildlife managers use various and often multifaceted approaches including habitat restoration\, translocations\, breeding programs\, and demographic monitoring to mitigate extinction risk for species with small\, fragmented populations. I will focus on how genomics can be used to gain deeper understanding of the demographic outcomes of these practices and the value of looking under the hood in this way for assessing population fitness using federally Threatened Florida Scrub-Jays as an example. Secondly\, I will discuss the prospect of using biclustering algorithms for identifying loci that may contribute to genetic load and the potential of applying this approach to enhance the recovery of the federally Endangered Poweshiek skipperling.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Academic & Community Collaborations
DESCRIPTION:Universities have a long and storied history of collaboration with community organizations and organizers. Yet these collaborations are not without their challenges\, as wealthy\, predominantly white universities must address issues of power\, privilege\, and competing priorities for these collaborations to succeed. While decades of research and experience have illustrated some best practices in academic-community collaborations\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, increasing politicalization of research\, growing public support of advocacy movements like Black Lives Matter\, and the increasing reliance on social media have forced community organizers to engage in new and creative efforts to support their communities. How can universities best evolve to collaborate with and support community organizations amid these new challenges? \n\nOn October 27\, join Dr. William Lopez for a discussion with Gladys Godinez\, Cecia Alvarado\, and Karina Perez\, three Latina organizers and creatives with decades of experience advocating with and for Latino communities. Together\, they will share their experiences on academic collaborations\, describing what they’ve done\, when it’s worked well\, when it’s gone wrong\, and what academics can do to best support the communities with whom they collaborate.\n\nCo-Sponsored by the NCID's Anti-Racism Collaborative\, Poverty Solutions\, the Department of American Culture\, the Latina/o Studies Program\, and the Carceral State Project.\n\nFacilitator:\n-William D. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ayumi Fujisaki-Manome will give a talk entitled \"Recently amplified interannual variability of the winter severity and ice cover over the North American Great Lakes in response to changing teleconnections\" at 3:30 pm\, Thursday\, Oct. 27 in CSRB 2246. The seminar will also be available on Zoom. Visit the website for details.\n\nAbstract:\nThe North American Great Lakes (hereafter\, the Great Lakes) are the largest world’s freshwater system and are partially frozen each year. While the Great Lakes annual maximum ice cover (AMIC) has decreased in recent decades in response to global warming\, notable year-to-year fluctuations exist\, and even in recent years\, extreme cold winters occurred (e.g.\, the winter of 2018/2019). In order to understand how the occurrences of these extreme winters are connected to large-scale atmospheric circulations\, we conduct statistical and process-oriented analyses from 1980 to 2020 using the time series of AMIC\, atmospheric reanalysis datasets\, and the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) data. We identify a reduced number of accumulated freezing degree days across the winter months in recent decades\, a step-change decrease of AMIC after the winter of 1997/98\, and an increased interannual variability of AMIC since 1993. AMIC is significantly correlated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation\, the North Atlantic Oscillation\, and the Pacific/North American pattern before the winter of 1997/98. After that\, the AMIC is significantly correlated with the Tropical/Northern Hemisphere pattern and Eastern Pacific Oscillation. Singular value decomposition of the 500 hPa geopotential height and surface air temperature shows a dipole pattern over the northeast Pacific and North America\, demonstrating the ridge-trough system. This dipole pattern shifts northward after 1997/98\, which coincides with the change in SST over the northeast Pacific\, where the second mode of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) on SST shows a warm blob-like feature manifested over the Gulf of Alaska. The regression of wave activity flux onto the SST EOF shows that the source of upward and eastward propagation of a stationary Rossby wave shifts to the west coast of North America\, likely moving the ridge-trough system eastward after the winter of 1997/98 to place the Great Lakes region in the trough.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Touching the Void: Enabling the Future of Haptic Interaction through Shape Displays
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nTowards a goal of more human-centered computing\, I believe that interaction must be grounded in the physical world and leverage our innate abilities for spatial cognition and dexterous manipulation with our hands. By creating interfaces that allow for richer physical interaction\, such as bimanual\, whole hand haptic exploration\, these systems can help people with different abilities (e.g.\, children\, people with visual impairments\, or even expert designers) better understand and interact with information. My work in Human Computer Interaction addresses a central challenge in the widespread adoption of such haptic user interfaces – how can we create physical interactive displays that update dynamically\, and what are the interaction techniques and enabling technologies necessary to support such systems? This talk will start with our recent work motivating the need for such devices through the development of new 3D tactile displays for interacting with spatial information in Virtual Reality as well as interfaces for people who are Blind and visually impaired to author 3D models. I will focus the rest of the talk on recent enabling technologies (including electrostatic adhesion and perceptual illusions) to make these devices low cost and high resolution. Specifically\, I will highlight the need to better integrate the development of these devices with a sensorimotor control perspective in order to improve perceived performance despite physical device limitations.\n\nBio\nSean Follmer is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Stanford University. His Research in Human-Computer Interaction\, Haptics\, and Human Robot Interaction explores the design of novel tactile physical interfaces and robotic devices. Dr. Follmer directs the Stanford SHAPE Lab\, co-directs the Center for Design Research\, and is a faculty member of the Stanford HCI Group. Dr. Follmer received a PhD and a Masters from the MIT Media Lab in 2015 and 2011 (respectively) for his work in Human-Computer Interaction\, and a BS in Engineering from Stanford University. His talk featured on TED.com was named one of the best science and tech TED talks of 2015 and has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. He has received numerous awards for his research including an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship\, NSF CAREER Award\, Google Faculty Research Award\, and 15 Best Paper Awards and nominations from premier conferences in Human-Computer Interaction.

SUMMARY:Other:Bioanalytical Applications of Microchip Electrophoresis
DESCRIPTION:Microchip electrophoresis is a powerful tool for the analysis of biological samples. In particular\, the ability to perform fast efficient separations makes it possible to monitor several compounds simultaneously with high temporal resolution. The small dimensions of the channels in the chip are compatible with the analysis of microdialysis samples and single cells. In this presentation\, two applications of microchip electrophoresis (ME) for biochemical investigations will be presented. The first application involves the development of ME-based methods for the detection of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species (RNOS) in macrophages and microglia. The second involves the combination of microdialysis with microchip electrophoresis for near real-time continuous monitoring of amino acids\, catecholamines\, and nitric oxide metabolites in awake\, freely roaming animals. The goal of this second application is to miniaturize the entire system for simultaneous monitoring of neurochemistry and behavior with on-animal analysis and telemetry control. \n \nSusan Lunte (University of Kansas)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Roundtable. Do Developing Democracies Need Developmental States?
DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Richard F. Doner\, Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus of Political Science\, Emory University\; Jessica Gottlieb\, associate professor of public affairs\, University of Houston\; Adrienne LeBas\, associate professor of government\, American University\; Erin Metz McDonell\, Notre Dame du Lac and Kellogg Associate Professor of Sociology\, University of Notre Dame. Moderator: Dan Slater\, WCED Director\, U-M.\n\nHow can countries best escape both dictatorship and poverty? This roundtable considers whether it is still either possible or desirable for emerging democracies to build the kind of powerful states that have alternatively fostered development and hindered prosperity in the postcolonial world.\n \nRichard F. Doner is Goodrich C. White Professor (Emeritus) in the Department of Political Science at Emory University. Dr. Doner's research focuses on the political and institutional bases of economic development\, especially in Southeast Asia. His books include *The Politics of Uneven Development: Thailand’s Economic Growth in Comparative Perspective* (2009)\; *From Silicon Valley to Singapore: Location and Competitive Advantage in the Hard Disk Drive Industry* (with David McKendrick and Stephan Haggard\, 2000)\; and *Driving a Bargain: Japanese Firms and Automobile Industrialization in Southeast Asia* (1991). Dr. Doner has written or consulted for the World Bank\, the International Labor Organization\, the Inter-American Development Bank\, and business associations in Southeast Asia. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Northeast Thailand and an assembly line worker at General Motors in California.\n \nJessica Gottlieb is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs and holds a PhD in Political Science and MA in Economics from Stanford University. She is a board member of the Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) network (2019 - ) and Data Coordinator for the Democratic Erosion Consortium. Her research focuses on the political economy of development\, investigating constraints to government accountability and state capacity in new democracies with some newer work on partisan polarization in the US. This work has been published in the *American Political Science Review\, American Journal of Political Science\,* and *World Politics\,* among others.\n \nAdrienne LeBas is an Associate Professor of Government at American University. Prior to joining AU\, LeBas was a Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College\, University of Oxford\, and Assistant Professor of Political Science and African Studies at Michigan State University. Her research interests include democratic institutions\, elections\, and political violence. She is the author of the award-winning *From Protest to Parties: Party-Building and Democratization in Africa* (Oxford University Press\, 2011) and articles in the *British Journal of Political Science\, the Journal of Democracy\, Comparative Politics\,* and elsewhere. LeBas also worked as a consultant for Human Rights Watch in Zimbabwe\, where she lived from 2002 to 2003.\n \nErin Metz McDonnell is a Notre Dame du Lac and Kellogg Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame\, specializing in Organizational\, Political\, Cultural\, and Development Sociology. Her award-winning work has been published in the *American Sociological Review\, American Journal of Sociology\, Socio-Economic Review\,* and *Comparative Political Studies*. Her book *Patchwork Leviathan: Pockets of Bureaucratic Effectiveness in Developing States* (Princeton\, 2020) analyzes niches of organizational excellence within otherwise-weak state administrations. Her current research in Ghana explains how organizational effectiveness spreads within states\, funded by an NSF CAREER grant. With the World Bank\, she has a project analyzing how training can enhance intrinsic motivation in the public sector.\n \nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at: http://myumi.ch/e6pbJ\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Decoding morphogenic instruction in human microphysiological systems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nTissue structure and function requires coordination between the physical organization of cells and the genetic programs controlling cell phenotype. Our lab investigates how intersections of chemical and mechanical signals at cell adhesive interfaces function across time and length scales to orchestrate 3D tissue morphogenesis and regulatory signaling. To do so\, we develop and apply biomimetic human microphysiological culture systems that incorporate 3D organotypic architectures and permit the study of diverse tissue morphogenic processes associated with human development\, regeneration\, and pathogenesis with high resolution and biological control. Combining these systems with new molecular tools and microscopy-based methods\, we have gained new mechanistic insight into diverse tissue morphogenic events ranging from the genesis and progression of human tuberculosis granulomas to the coordinated assembly and maintenance of human microvascular networks. In this talk\, I will highlight these recent advances and detail our recent work establishing a previously unappreciated function for Notch receptors that links adhesive and cytoskeletal processes to transcriptional regulation of cell fate.\n\nBio:\nMatt Kutys is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and is faculty in the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center\, the Cardiovascular Research Institute\, and the UCSF – UC Berkeley Joint Graduate Program in Bioengineering. Dr. Kutys obtained his BS in Bioengineering from Pennsylvania State University working Dr. William Hancock and he received his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the National Institutes of Health under Dr. Kenneth Yamada. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University under Dr. Christopher Chen before joining UCSF in 2020. Dr. Kutys is the recipient of an NCI Pathway to Independence Award\, a UCSF Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research Award\, and is a Shu Chien Early Career Award Lecturer from the Bioengineering Institute of California. \n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Studio Safar: The Inherent Politics of Design
DESCRIPTION:Studio Safar is a design agency and publisher with offices in Beirut and\, now\, Tiohtia:ke (Montreal). The studio adopts an experimental approach to design. Evoked by its name\, the studio is concerned with notions of communication across cultural and linguistic barriers. Projects span different media and design frameworks such as communication strategies\, publications\, visual identities\, exhibitions and sets\, and websites. Most of the work services the extended cultural sector\, and is engaged in social and political discourse. \nAs opposed to having a signature style\, Studio Safar is committed to creating singular design solutions for each collaboration. While drawing on a number of artistic and cultural influences and inspirations\, research remains central to the design process. The studio collaborates with a network of creatives from a wide array of fields. The studio publishes the biannual and bilingual (Arabic/English) design and visual culture journal\, Safar. The magazine answers to the lack of critical writings on design in the global south\, and it works towards acknowledging designers as active agents of cultural production. The studio is also expanding into publishing books on design in the region.\nDesign is inherently political— it shapes our cities\, our homes\, bodies\, and minds. It curates\, connects\, arranges\, and defines. And\, perhaps above all\, it carries the power to shape our responses to challenges big and small\, local and global\, short and long term. This talk comes from an urge to decolonize visual culture from decades of European and American hegemony. \nStudio Safar are in residence at Riverbank Arts in Flint\, where the exhibition Flint ✕ Safar opens on October 14th. On October 15th\, Studio Safar will be releasing Flint Magazine: Issue 3 at the Detroit Art Book Fair.

SUMMARY:Performance:Amplify Kickback Series | Benefit for Community Partners
DESCRIPTION:Join Amplify and YCS for a special evening to highlight the success and need for public support of the YCHS Music Department\, raising awareness and funds for the brilliance within it. There will be performances from YCHS students with sets from the 2022 Amplify Fellows\, Ki5 and Lorian Janine. The show will also featured words spoken about the program by Crystal Harding (of YCHS) and district leadership regarding the importance of the arts in education for Ypsilanti students and the wider Washtenaw county area.\n \nKi5 Bio | Singer-songwriter and producer Kyler Wilkins\, from Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, has been performing as Ki5 with a loop station capturing original vocal arrangements and covers since 2017. Ki5 delivers familiar genres such as R&B\, pop\, and folk through the lens of an a cappella singer-songwriter. His honest\, empathetic\, and freeing style has been influenced by Reggie Watts\, Bobby McFerrin\, and Bon Iver. In August 2022\, Ki5 released his debut full-length album “Spirit” in partnership with the Amplify Fellowship and Christopher Porter of Ann Arbor’s Pulp had this to say about the album: “Positivity and emotional openness course through Wilkins' words\, which he sings earnestly and passionately without overselling\, the sentiments flowing easily and naturally from his heart.”\n \nKi5 is active on Patreon and all social media at “ki5loops\,” and more info can be found at ki5loops.com\n \nLorian Janine Bio | Lorian Janine is a creative singer-songwriter from Detroit Michigan. She began playing the violin at age eight and continued to grow in her musical gift to play the guitar and drums. Although she sang in her church choir from age 11\, Lorian didn’t find her own passion for singing and begin to explore her voice until 18. Lorian has put out her first single project\, “Middle of the Sea\,” with the Amplify Fellowship.
