The venue for this year is Study Hall Lounge on South University Avenue\; the party will begin at 10 PM on Thursday\, October 27th. Everyone ages 18 and over is welcome to attend as long as they bring a valid ID to the venue. There will be food\, beverages and a costume contest where the two spookiest individuals will be awarded a $50 gift card.  One final note is that we are pre-selling tickets from now until October 26th for $15. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. DESCRIPTION:What is a well-designed life? How do you find a career where you can thrive? Inspired by Stanford’s Designing Your Life curriculum\, this interactive\, six-week\, in-person seminar will teach graduate students and postdoctoral fellows principles for designing a fulfilling career. Participants must commit to attending all six sessions of the seminar and a $10 registration fee is required for participation in this seminar. The seminar includes brief homework assignments\, discussions\, role-plays\, the Gallup Strengths assessment\, and out-of-class application activities. Those who complete all six sessions will receive a digital badge that can be shared on LinkedIn. Participation will be capped at 35. This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Information Design in Common-Value Auction with Expost Moral Hazard: Application to OCS Auctions
DESCRIPTION:This paper explores the extent to which information design can increase the auctioneer’s revenue in the US offshore oil/gas lease auctions. In our setting\, firms first submit cash bids in a first-price sealed-bid auction\; the winning firm then decides whether to explore a tract\, and the government receives a royalty payment on the production value of the tract. We first document that when all the bids are revealed to the winning bidder after the auction\, the exploration rate is positively correlated with the losing bids\, suggesting that the winning bidder utilizes the rivals’ bids to infer their private information on the tract’s production value. We then characterize the equilibrium bidding strategy in an environment in which the auctioneer can design and commit to how to reveal information on the losing bids to the winning bidder. Our counterfactual exercises show that information design can significantly improve the auctioneer’s revenue. For example\, fully withholding information on the losing bids results in an increase in the per-tract profit of between $204K and $901K.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: While the past decade has witnessed tremendous progress in the computational\, methodological and applied aspects of optimal transport (OT)\, our understanding of fundamental statistical questions in this context has lagged behind.\n\nOne of the central objects in the OT framework is the OT map -- the map which optimally transports samples from a source to a target distribution. In the statistical context\, our goal is to estimate this map from samples from the source and target distributions. We will discuss some of our recent results on estimating the optimal transport map between smooth distributions. These results are based on novel stability bounds for the OT map and they show that various\, easy to compute plugin estimators are minimax optimal. We will also develop some results for constructing confidence intervals/bands for the Wasserstein distance\, and for the OT map\, centered around our proposed plugin estimates.\n\nThis is based on joint work with Tudor Manole\, Jonathan Niles-Weed and Larry Wasserman.\n\n\nSivaraman Balakirshnan is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Statistics and Data Science and in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon.   https://www.stat.cmu.edu/~siva/

In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

Begley in Sappho’s Gymnasium (1994)\, and selections from Greek poet Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke’s collections Beings and Things on Their Own (1986) and The Scattered Papers of Penelope (2009). Crowfoot Collegiate Professor of Environmental Justice at the School for Environment And Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on biodiversity and arthropod-mediated ecosystem services in rural and urban agriculture. Her lab conducts agroecological research in Latin America and North America\, focusing on the impacts of agriculture on biodiversity and the relationship between biodiversity\, ecosystem function\, and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. She is the co-author of four books: Breakfast of Biodiversity\, Nature’s Matrix: Linking Agriculture\, Conservation and Food Sovereignty\, Coffee Agroecology\, and Ecological Complexity and Agroecology. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Moral Blind Spots
DESCRIPTION:Why do efforts designed to improve ethical behavior in the workplace continue to over promise and under deliver? This presentation will explore the role that moral blindspots play in unethical behavior as a potential explanation. Drawing on the burgeoning field of behavioral ethics\, which examines how and why people behave the way they do in the face of ethical dilemmas\, discussion will reveal that much of our ethical behavior occurs without conscious awareness\, leading to a gap between perceptions of our ethicality and our actual ethicality. Ignoring these blindspots is argued to be a root cause of why well-intended efforts to improve ethical behavior continue to disappoint. The presentation will focus on the causes of these blindspots\, including ethical illusions\, ethical fading\, sanctioning systems\, and motivated blindness. The talk will conclude with insights on how to overcome these dangerous obstacles to ethical behavior.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Gravitational waves and the propagation of fermions in gauge-field inflation
DESCRIPTION:Degree-scale B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background sourced by primordial gravitational waves is the so-called smoking-gun signature of inflation. The detection of these primordial CMB B-modes is often described as would-be evidence that inflation occurred at or near the scale of grand unification\, that the inflaton rolled over a super-Planckian distance in field space\, and that gravity is quantized. In this talk\, I describe a class of inflationary models that serve as a counter-example to these claims. Models involving classical non-Abelian gauge fields can produce observable gravitational waves at energy scales far below the scale of grand unification without the quantization of gravity\, or super-Planckian field excursions. I show how the gauge field background violates parity\, leading to the helical polarization of the gravitational wave background\; a signature of this class of models. I also discuss the propagation and backreaction of fermions on the background field configurations\, and some subtleties associated with renormalization of fermions in axion backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:The Western Gneiss Region (WGR) of Norway is one of Earth’s largest ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic terranes. Within the WGR\, thermobarometric studies delineate peak pressures and temperature resulting from Caledonian continental subduction\, structural studies highlight multistage deformation associated with exhumation\, and geo/thermochronology investigations show that exhumation-related deformation is associated with Caledonian titanite growth or recrystallization of inherited grains. However\, an unresolved question concerns the relationship between deformation\, pressure-temperature conditions\, and the variable Caledonian U-Pb titanite dates recovered from areas of the WGR. Can the range of Caledonian U-Pb titanite dates be related to different steps along the exhumation path? The northern coast of Otrøya in the deepest-exposed (Nordøyane) UHP domain of the WGR has abundant outcrop evidence for syn-exhumation deformation in variably-retrogressed and -deformed eclogites and gneisses. Tetravalent cation thermobarometry\, outcrop-scale mapping\, and U-Pb geo/thermochronology indicate fabric formation in retrogressed eclogite at ~825°C and ~2.0 GPa at ~402 Ma\, followed by ~392 Ma titanite growth associated with partial melting of eclogite at ~740 °C and ~1.3 GPa. Subsequently\, ~382–375 Ma dates from zircon\, monazite\, and titanite correspond to recrystallization due to constrictional strain at ~ 740°C and ~1.0 GPa. Younger\, more localized deformation followed at temperatures <600°C. The results explain the variable Caledonian U-Pb titanite dates reported in the WGR and highlight the power of trace elements to identify geologically significant titanite (re)crystallization events in apparently nondispersed U-Pb datasets. The results support a two-stage exhumation history for the WGR.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe ExaSMR project is developing methods and software for coupled Monte Carlo neutron transport and computational fluid dynamics simulations for analysis of nuclear reactors. A part of the larger DOE Exascale Computing Project\, ExaSMR is preparing to perform simulations on the nation’s two first exascale computing platforms: the Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Aurora machine at Argonne National Laboratory. This talk will provide a brief overview of the Exascale Computing Project\, followed by a deep dive into several research topics being investigated by the ExaSMR team. Challenges associated with maximizing the computational performance of both continuous-energy Monte Carlo neutron transport and CFD solvers on GPU-based computing platforms will be addressed\, as well as a discussion of strategies for efficiently integrating isotopic depletion into Monte Carlo simulations. Finally\, a perspective will be provided on the value of collaboration in computational science applications. Multiple examples will be provided where open engagement beyond typical research teams has resulted in advancements both to individual simulation codes and to the community as a whole.\n\n \n\nBio:\nSteven Hamilton is a Senior R&D Staff member in the HPC Methods for Nuclear Applications Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, where he has worked since 2011. He received his BS and MS degrees from Georgia Tech in Nuclear Engineering and his PhD from Emory University in Computational Mathematics. Steven currently leads the ExaSMR project\, a multiphysics simulation effort targeting advances in nuclear reactor modeling as part of the DOE Exascale Computing Project. His research includes methods for both deterministic and Monte Carlo radiation transport\, with a focus on high performance computing and GPU-based computing architectures. He has also worked on nonlinear algorithms for multiphysics simulations as well as linear solvers for computational fluid dynamics solvers. He is an active developer on the Denovo deterministic and Shift Monte Carlo radiation transport codes\, both part of ORNL’s SCALE suite of analysis tools.

DESCRIPTION:The Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory welcomes you for history & astronomy presentations & observing with its historic telescope. Explore the heavens during one of our astronomy nights. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes.\n\nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We strive to always have interesting things for you to do. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.
