SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Miscalibration\, overconfidence\, and uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:Overconfidence is considered to be one of the most prominent behavioral biases\, and has been studied with students\, executives\, and investors using different variants of a confidence interval task with large intervals such as 90%. On average this research has found that individuals are overprecise\, leading this type of overconfidence to sometimes be labelled as the “most robust form of overconfidence”. With over 1000 participants\, we study different versions of confidence interval tasks\, with widths spanning from 10% to 90%. We show that the aggregate finding of overconfidence can be reversed by examining small instead of large intervals. In what we consider to be our most reliable interval task\, we find that the magnitude of underconfidence for small intervals is similar to the magnitude of overconfidence for large intervals. Hence\, when aggregating across small and large intervals in this task\, participants are on average well calibrated. Our results suggest that this form of overconfidence may not be as robust as previously thought.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MORE (FACULTY) Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This in-person session helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/M9Rrb.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium - Non-canonical roles for endogenous opioids in affect and motivation
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, abuse of prescription and illicit opioids resulted in nearly 70\,000 deaths in the United States. The transition from therapeutic to abusive opioid use occurs through the maladaptive activation of mesocorticolimbic structures\, such as the nucleus accumbens medial shell (mNAcSh) in the ventral forebrain. Within mNAcSh\, mu opioid receptor (MOPR) stimulation can powerfully modulate reward related behaviors\, such as food intake\, social interaction\, or drug seeking. While extensive insights into opioid function were established in the late 20th century\, the application of new technologies and clinical meta-analyses make it increasingly clear that the functional heuristics that have guided opioid biomedical research may be flawed. Here we explore how seemingly conflicting scientific literature from the 20th and 21st centuries may instead work together to provide new insights into how opioids function in the brain and periphery\, with a special emphasis on mesocorticolimbic neural circuits and technology development.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar / student evalution - Hybrid: Seasonal shifts in a montane meadow ecosystem above and belowground with climate change
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology.\n\nAbstract\nClimate change is impacting temperature and moisture conditions across the seasons in montane meadows\, from accelerating snowmelt date early in the growing season to greater drying of the soil in the later part of the growing season. Though there are distinct impacts throughout a growing season\, we know little about how climate change will impact ecosystem function\, such as productivity and nutrient cycling\, beyond when these processes are typically measured during peak seasonal productivity. Additionally\, a growing body of work acknowledges the linkage between plants and soil and shows that an impact on one has cascading effects on the other either bottom-up or top-down. During the seminar\, I will discuss how climate change\, through abiotic and biotic effects\, is impacting plant and soil conditions at a fine-scale resolution throughout the growing season. \n\nThis seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page). Contact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for passcode at least two hours prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | China’s Local Government Debt: A Ticking Time Bomb?
DESCRIPTION:Will local government debt derail decades of China’s economic growth? Much of China’s remarkable growth has been fueled by local government issued debt that funded the massive infrastructure overhaul throughout the country. Local governments successfully relied on land finance and issued bonds to borrow and grow. But now\, with the dramatic economic slowdown\, is the merry-go-round seizing up? Difficult headwinds such as the Global Financial Crisis\, the real estate sector collapse\, the cooling of foreign investment interest\, an unfavorable geopolitical environment and continuing COVID lockdowns\, all beg the question: Do local governments have enough cash\, and/or assets to cover their ballooning debt payments?\n \n In her talk\, Professor Oi will examine and explain the history China’s local government debt problem and outline why local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) now face serious systemic liquidity risk. What are the tools the Chinese government can deploy to manage this situation in a way that maintains stability? And what are the risks inherent in these approaches?\n \n Jean C. Oi is the William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics in the Department of Political Science and a Senior Fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University. She directs the China Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at FSI and is the founding Lee Shau Kee Director of the Stanford Center at Peking University. She received her PhD in political science from the University of Michigan.\n \n Dr. Oi has published extensively on political economy and the process of reform in China. Recent books include \"Fateful Decisions: Choices that will Shape China's Future\,\" co-edited with Tom Fingar (2020)\; \"Zouping Revisited: Adaptive Governance in a Chinese County\,\" co-edited with Steven Goldstein (2018)\; and \"Challenges in the Process of China's Urbanization\,\" co-edited with Karen Eggleston and Yiming Wang (2017). Recent articles include “Firms as Revenue Safety Net: Political Connections and Returns to the Chinese State\,” with Chaohua Han and Xiaojun Li\, \"China Quarterly\,\" forthcoming. “China’s Local Government Debt: The Grand Bargain\,” with Adam Liu and Yi Zhang\, \"The China Journal\,\" volume 87\, number 1\, January 2022. “China’s Challenges: Now it Gets Much Harder\,” co-authored with Thomas Finger\, \"The Washington Quarterly\,\" Vol. 43 (Spring 2020.\n \n Her current research continues to explore central-local relations\, including local government debt and fiscal politics broadly defined. She is beginning a project on China’s Belt and Road Initiative.\n \n\nZoom registration link: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EvTxvuTfTHW07E5wnkpR1w\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Student Art Exhibition - Childhood & Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Windows Lounge on our 3rd floor Plaza level of Palmer Commons to see Rachel Deveyra's student art exhibition. It will be up from November 1 - 18\, 2022. Below is a statement from the artist. \n\nThis body of work is a reflection of my childhood experiences. Each one of these pieces represents how beauty standards have impacted my life. Through this reflection\, I have not only accepted myself as I am now but also my third grade self who felt bad about herself. Merely acknowledging the existence of these standards and processing my memories through my art has been therapeutic and has served as a healthy reminder that beauty should be perceived broadly and inclusively. Hopefully\, my art encourages others to be more accepting of themselves as well as each other’s differences.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics (I-REP)
DESCRIPTION:Racial and ethnic identities play a key role in shaping behaviors\, attitudes\, institutions\, and social structures. As such\, scholars across disciplines have been devoted to investigating how race and ethnicity feature in every aspect of social and political life. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity\, and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race\, ethnicity\, and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students)\, build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group\n\nRacial conflict is a fixture of American politics and society. Issues of race and racial identity have shaped our criminal justice system\, generated social movements like Black Lives Matter\, and have been integral to the development of policies from immigration to housing and education. Outside of formal institutions and organizations\, race also animates our interpersonal relationships and social interactions. While the summer of 2021 marked the most recent “racial reckoning” in America\, it was not the first instance of social unrest in America generated by racial conflict\, and it certainly will not be the last. As America continues to wrestle with race\, I-REP seeks to support interdisciplinary research that analyzes racial inequality and racial conflict in political and social institutions as well as in interpersonal behavior. Such research has been instrumental to multiple disciplines across the social sciences\, including Political Science\, Social Psychology\, Sociology\, Psychology\, and Public Policy\, for decades. And while race\, racial identity\, and racial conflict can (and often are) studied in their own right\, research on almost any topic will benefit from an analysis that accounts for the impact of race across disciplinary boundaries.\n\nAt a time when politicians and political pundits are calling for the erasure of race from educational curricula\, it is imperative that academia continue to create spaces for research on race to be discussed\, evaluated\, critiqued and improved. Therefore\, I-REP strives to encourage scholarly conversations and collaborations among researchers who seek to better understand the consequential role of race and ethnicity in social and political life.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PhD Research Talk: Mohammad Zhalechian
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract:\nThe rapid growth of information and accessibility to big data provide a unique opportunity to shift toward data-driven decision-making. These real-time paradigms (i) adaptively learn a model that predicts a user-specific outcome for each available decision (prediction) and (ii) harness this model to make data-driven decisions for subsequent users (prescription).\n \nAlthough there have been tremendous advances in data-driven decision-making\, such advances often cannot be applied to operations management problems because of their complexity. This brings forward several challenges and opportunities. In this talk\, I discuss two challenges in healthcare and service operations: the need for joint learning and decision-making under limited resources and delayed feedback. I then introduce a data-driven predictive and prescriptive framework with provable performance guarantee to solve a hospital's care unit assignment problem. The effectiveness of this framework is illustrated using hospital system data.\n \nI will end the talk by discussing my broader research agenda on dealing with other practical and societal challenges that arise in developing data-driven decision-making frameworks.\n\n\nPresenter Bio:\nMohammad Zhalechian is a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research focuses on data-driven analytics to solve a wide range of problems in healthcare and service operations. He has collaborated closely with hospitals\, clinics\, and government agencies. Mohammad earned his Ph.D. in Operations Research in Aug 2022 at the University of Michigan\, where he was advised by Prof. Mark Van Oyen. He is the recipient of awards\, including second place in the 2020 INFORMS Decision Analysis Society Best Paper Award\, finalist in the 2020 INFORMS Seth Bonder Scholarship of Health Applications Society\, and winner of the 2021 IOE Richard C. Wilson Best Student Paper Award. His research work has also received multiple recognitions in the best paper competitions from MSOM\, POMS\, and HAS communities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Simple and Scalable Edge AI – a Configurable\, Dataflow Architecture with at Memory Computing
DESCRIPTION:The ability to run AI efficiently at the edge will impact broad applications ranging from smart IoT\, autonomous driving to robotics. However\, as AI model sizes grow rapidly so do the cost of the hardware required to run them and the energy they consume\, severely hindering the deployments of AI in edge devices. Careful analysis shows that the energy cost and throughput bottlenecks when running AI tasks are not caused by compute operations\, but by constant data movements instead. Solving these problems requires new computing architectures that address the data movement problem and minimize its cost. By performing computing at memory and minimizing data movements through a dataflow architecture\, MemryX’s AI accelerator chips fundamentally solves the throughput and energy challenges in Edge AI applications. In this talk\, we will present the design principles behind MemryX’s architecture\, use case examples\, and features of the Software Development Kit (SDK) that make AI implementation easy and scalable for edge applications such as robotics.\n\nWei Lu is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at the University of Michigan\, and co-founder of MemryX Inc. He received B.S. in physics from Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, China\, in 1996\, and Ph.D. in physics from Rice University\, Houston\, TX in 2003. From 2003 to 2005\, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University\, Cambridge\, MA. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2005. His research interest includes resistive-random access memory (RRAM)\, memristor-based logic circuits\, neuromorphic computing systems\, and low dimensional systems. To date Prof. Lu has published over 150 journal and conference articles with 34\,000 citations and H-factor of 82. He is an IEEE Fellow. \n\nMohammed A. Zidan is currently leading the architecture team at MemryX Inc. Before joining MemryX\, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Mohammed got his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from KAUST with a GPA of 4.0. He also earned his MSc and BSc in electronics and communications engineering from Cairo University and the IAET\, respectively\, where he was valedictorian in both. Mohammed has 10 granted US patents and more than 40 published papers and book chapters in his field. He also contributed to two IEEE standards. Mohammed received the IEEE CAS Society Pre-Doctoral Scholarship and the IEEE CICC Outstanding Invited Paper Awards.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Padnos Public Engagement on Jewish Learning Lecture: “Remnants of a Mighty Nation”: Jews Through the Eyes of American Christians
DESCRIPTION:The Stuart and Barbara Padnos Foundation has provided a gift to the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies to establish the Padnos Engagement on Jewish Learning fund. The initiative\, which commenced last year\, will facilitate annual public educational activities in Jewish Studies throughout the State of Michigan with a focus on the western part of the state. This lecture is in partnership with the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University.\n\nThe Padnos Public Engagement on Jewish Learning Event\, to take place on November 1 at 7 pm\, will feature Dr. Julian Levinson\, Samuel Shetzer Professor of American Jewish Studies\, University of Michigan. Dr. Levinson will present a lecture called “'Remnants of a Mighty Nation': Jews Through the Eyes of American Christians” at the Loosemore Auditorium at the Richard M. Devos Center on Grand Valley State University's Campus. The event will also be virtually simulcast via Zoom. Immediately following the lecture at approximately 8:30 there will be a light reception in the adjacent Lubbers Exhibition Hall.\n\nDr. Levinson prefaces his discussion: \"What is it like to belong to a religious minority? For Jews in the United States\, there have been countless challenges as well as unexpected benefits from living among a Christian majority. While some individual Christians have been highly critical of Jews for their beliefs and practices\, others have been deeply respectful of Jews for being the original “chosen people\,” for preserving the Hebrew language\, and for maintaining traditions going back to the Bible. This talk will focus on the ways Jews were perceived in nineteenth-century America\, when the origins of present-day Christian-Jewish relations were established. It will trace the formation of views that are still prevalent today\, including the evangelical fascination with Israel. It will also consider how Jews have shaped their own identities in relation to the broader Christian environment.\"\n\nThis is a hybrid lecture.\nLoosemore Auditorium\, DeVos Center\, Grand Valley State University\nZoom Registration: https://myumi.ch/DJN9M
