They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \r\n\r\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \r\n\r\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Though there are distinct impacts throughout a growing season, we know little about how climate change will impact ecosystem function, such as productivity and nutrient cycling, beyond when these processes are typically measured during peak seasonal productivity. Additionally, a growing body of work acknowledges the linkage between plants and soil and shows that an impact on one has cascading effects on the other either bottom-up or top-down. Oi is the William Haas Professor of Chinese Politics in the Department of Political Science and a Senior Fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University. She directs the China Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at FSI and is the founding Lee Shau Kee Director of the Stanford Center at Peking University. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race, Ethnicity, and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race, ethnicity, and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students), build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group\r\n\r\nRacial conflict is a fixture of American politics and society. Issues of race and racial identity have shaped our criminal justice system, generated social movements like Black Lives Matter, and have been integral to the development of policies from immigration to housing and education. Outside of formal institutions and organizations, race also animates our interpersonal relationships and social interactions. While the summer of 2021 marked the most recent \u201cracial reckoning\u201d in America, it was not the first instance of social unrest in America generated by racial conflict, and it certainly will not be the last. As America continues to wrestle with race, I-REP seeks to support interdisciplinary research that analyzes racial inequality and racial conflict in political and social institutions as well as in interpersonal behavior. Such research has been instrumental to multiple disciplines across the social sciences, including Political Science, Social Psychology, Sociology, Psychology, and Public Policy, for decades. And while race, racial identity, and racial conflict can (and often are) studied in their own right, research on almost any topic will benefit from an analysis that accounts for the impact of race across disciplinary boundaries.\r\n\r\nAt a time when politicians and political pundits are calling for the erasure of race from educational curricula, it is imperative that academia continue to create spaces for research on race to be discussed, evaluated, critiqued and improved. This brings forward several challenges and opportunities. In this talk, I discuss two challenges in healthcare and service operations: the need for joint learning and decision-making under limited resources and delayed feedback. I then introduce a data-driven predictive and prescriptive framework with provable performance guarantee to solve a hospital's care unit assignment problem. The effectiveness of this framework is illustrated using hospital system data.\r\n \r\nI will end the talk by discussing my broader research agenda on dealing with other practical and societal challenges that arise in developing data-driven decision-making frameworks.\r\n\r\n\r\nPresenter Bio:\r\nMohammad Zhalechian is a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research focuses on data-driven analytics to solve a wide range of problems in healthcare and service operations. He has collaborated closely with hospitals, clinics, and government agencies. Mohammad earned his Ph.D. in Operations Research in Aug 2022 at the University of Michigan, where he was advised by Prof. Mark Van Oyen. He is the recipient of awards, including second place in the 2020 INFORMS Decision Analysis Society Best Paper Award, finalist in the 2020 INFORMS Seth Bonder Scholarship of Health Applications Society, and winner of the 2021 IOE Richard C. Wilson Best Student Paper Award. Careful analysis shows that the energy cost and throughput bottlenecks when running AI tasks are not caused by compute operations, but by constant data movements instead. Solving these problems requires new computing architectures that address the data movement problem and minimize its cost. By performing computing at memory and minimizing data movements through a dataflow architecture, MemryX\u2019s AI accelerator chips fundamentally solves the throughput and energy challenges in Edge AI applications. In this talk, we will present the design principles behind MemryX\u2019s architecture, use case examples, and features of the Software Development Kit (SDK) that make AI implementation easy and scalable for edge applications such as robotics.\r\n\r\nWei Lu is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at the University of Michigan, and co-founder of MemryX Inc. He received B.S. in physics from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1996, and Ph.D. in physics from Rice University, Houston, TX in 2003. From 2003 to 2005, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2005. His research interest includes resistive-random access memory (RRAM), memristor-based logic circuits, neuromorphic computing systems, and low dimensional systems. To date Prof. Lu has published over 150 journal and conference articles with 34,000 citations and H-factor of 82. He is an IEEE Fellow. \r\n\r\nMohammed A. Zidan is currently leading the architecture team at MemryX Inc. Before joining MemryX, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Mohammed got his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from KAUST with a GPA of 4.0. He also earned his MSc and BSc in electronics and communications engineering from Cairo University and the IAET, respectively, where he was valedictorian in both. For Jews in the United States, there have been countless challenges as well as unexpected benefits from living among a Christian majority.
