The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera. Civic Action Before and After Russia’s War in Ukraine DESCRIPTION:Prior to February 2022\, there was compelling evidence that Russian society had undergone a dramatic transformation that increased social mobilization and created significant new challenges for the regime. While this mobilizational capacity varied widely across regions and issue areas\, the growth of everyday activism across the Federation had become linked to political contestation in elections and increased demands for government response. Moreover\, everyday protest supporters were drawn from among social conservatives and Putin supporters. This rise in non-political protest also fueled political actions to support banned candidates in Moscow in 2019 and against the arrest of Aleksey Navalny in 2021. Yet\, the same society had a very different reaction to the Kremlin’s escalation of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Russian society not only failed to protest the war in large numbers but chose to embrace Kremlin narratives and disinformation and support the special military operation. He is primarily interested in responsive survey designs\, survey nonresponse\, and machine learning techniques. His dissertation topic is using models to inform responsive survey designs.\n\nAbstract\nSurveys are experiencing declining response rates. With more and more effort expended to combat these declining response rates\, the cost of large-scale surveys has continued to rise. Recent technological developments in survey data collection have allowed the survey designer to make near-real-time intervention decisions. Stopping rules are one of the interventions often considered to improve the efficiency of data collection. Stopping some cases essentially reallocates effort from stopped cases to others\, but most previously proposed stopping rules have only considered single estimates. In multipurpose surveys\, there may be data quality objectives that must be met for multiple estimates with constraints on costs. We introduce a stopping rule that accounts for the cost and the quality of one or more estimates. The proposed stopping rule is illustrated via simulation using data from the Health and Retirement Study.\n\nMPSDS\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021\, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data\, but also including social media posts\, sensor data\, and administrative records\, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. In this talk\, I will describe a new proposal using the homogeneous precession domain of superfluid He-3 as the detection medium\, where the effect of the axion wind is a small shift in the precession frequency of a large-amplitude NMR signal. This setup can provide broadband detection of multiple axion masses simultaneously\, and has competitive sensitivity to other axion wind experiments such as CASPEr-Wind at masses below 0.1 micro-eV by exploiting precision frequency metrology in the readout stage. First\, I will introduce Shepherd\, a graph neural network for personalized diagnosis of patients with rare genetic diseases. Diagnostic delay is pervasive in patients with rare genetic conditions. It can lead to numerous problems\, including redundant testing and unnecessary procedures\, delays in obtaining disease-appropriate management and therapies\, and even irreversible disease progression. Shepherd uses knowledge-guided geometric deep learning to gather information from different parts of a knowledge graph and logically connect a patient's clinical-genomic information to the region in the knowledge graph relevant to diagnosis. Evaluation of patients from the Undiagnosed Diseases Network shows that Shepherd accurately identifies causal disease genes\, finds other patients with the same causal gene and disease\, and provides interpretable characterizations of novel diseases. Second\, I will describe applications of graph neural networks in drug discovery. These are available through Therapeutics Data Commons (https://tdcommons.ai)\, an initiative to access and evaluate AI capability across therapeutic modalities and stages of drug discovery. The Commons supports the development of machine learning methods\, with a strong bent towards developing the foundations for which methods are most suitable for drug discovery and why.\n\nShort Bio:\nMarinka Zitnik (https://zitniklab.hms.harvard.edu) is an Assistant Professor at Harvard University with appointments in the Department of Biomedical Informatics\, Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard\, and Harvard Data Science. However\, all living organisms contain a dedicated class of proteins\, termed molecular chaperones\, that specifically regulate protein folding and dynamics to prevent pathological outcomes. Can understanding the function of these molecular chaperone proteins inspire development of novel “pharmacological chaperones”? By combining biochemistry\, biophysics\, and chemical biology approaches with human genetics and emerging technologies\, my research aims to answer this question. In Computer Science\, Artificial Intelligence is defined as the study of Intelligent Agents\, which includes any device that perceives its environment and that takes actions to maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. In general\, the term Artificial Intelligence is applied when a machine mimics cognitive functions that humans associate with other human minds\, such as learning and problem-solving. The prevailing trajectory of this line of inquiry is preoccupated with aspects of optimization\, such as ideas of optimizing floorplans\, material consumption\, and time schedules of construction sites – which cover the tamed problems of disciplinary considerations. At the same time\, it interrogates the wicked problem in the production of architecture – creativity\, intuition\, and sensibility. This opens ontological questions about the nature of creativity\, its role in the inception of architectural projects\, and the methods to evaluate this. This symposium and exhibition would be among the first of its kind\, framing this problem in this particular way. Can an AI create a novel sensibility (?) -and if so: can we as humans perceive and understand it? This is one of a set of questions that the event is set out to examine and explicate through the format of the symposium. This symposium serves as a launch pad for the examination of an emergent field of technology that is currently profoundly changing multiple levels of society\, economy and culture demonstrated through the use in the discipline of architecture.\n\nThe topic is presented through a series of lenses: design projects\, speculations\, theoretical considerations\, and scientific insight. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.
