SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Nam Center Perspectives on Contemporary Korea Conference 2022 | Korea Around the Table: Food\, Culture\, and Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Full conference details available here: https://myumi.ch/RWn2z\n \n This conference is free and open to the public.\n\nRegistration is required to attend virtually: https://myumi.ch/8437R\n \n Join us for the 12th annual Perspectives on Contemporary Korea Conference!\n \n Food exposes the intricacies and complexities of Korean culture and history. Food is quick and slow\, tradition and innovation\, codification and creativity\, quintessentially local and a booming global industry. Food is social\, whether served at a formal banquet or eaten on the street with friends. Food is lauded for its authenticity but is endlessly crossing borders and taking on new lives. Jjajangmyeon is Chinese food in Korea and Korean food abroad. One can eat sundubu jjigae in Seoul without realizing it was popularized in southern California. A bowl of budae jjigae remembers conflict but offers comfort.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Korea Foundation.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Neural Architecture Exhibition & Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Neural Architecture Symposium at Taubman College presents itself as an opportunity to survey the emerging field of Architecture and Artificial Intelligence\, and to reflect on the implications of a world increasingly entangled in questions of the agency\, culture\, and ethics of AI. This rapidly developing field of architectural inquiry is ripe for a rigorous interrogation. Almost daily\, new practices emerge that focus on the incredible opportunities that an expanded human mind through AI offer for the discipline of architecture. At the same time\, AI is observed with suspicion in regards to potentially displacing entire practices out of the field. The symposium oscillates between those poles of tension\, in order to inform the public audience\, and the discipline\, about the status quo and the vision of this paradigm-changing new ecology of design.\n\nAI is quite a generalist term\, used to describe several varying approaches. In Computer Science\, Artificial Intelligence is defined as the study of Intelligent Agents\, which includes any device that perceives its environment and that takes actions to maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. In general\, the term Artificial Intelligence is applied when a machine mimics cognitive functions that humans associate with other human minds\, such as learning and problem-solving. The prevailing trajectory of this line of inquiry is preoccupated with aspects of optimization\, such as ideas of optimizing floorplans\, material consumption\, and time schedules of construction sites – which cover the tamed problems of disciplinary considerations. At the same time\, it interrogates the wicked problem in the production of architecture – creativity\, intuition\, and sensibility. This opens ontological questions about the nature of creativity\, its role in the inception of architectural projects\, and the methods to evaluate this. This symposium and exhibition would be among the first of its kind\, framing this problem in this particular way. Can an AI create a novel sensibility (?) -and if so: can we as humans perceive and understand it? This is one of a set of questions that the event is set out to examine and explicate through the format of the symposium. This symposium serves as a launch pad for the examination of an emergent field of technology that is currently profoundly changing multiple levels of society\, economy and culture demonstrated through the use in the discipline of architecture.\n\nThe topic is presented through a series of lenses: design projects\, speculations\, theoretical considerations\, and scientific insight. This combination allows for an insightful\, but entertaining symposium\, about a very pressing affair in architecture and society at large. The stunning visual quality of the projects and proposed architecture studios in combination with the voice of science and theory allow for a deep interrogation of current development in architecture. This symposium and exhibition will provide insights into posthuman design methodologies operating in a world shifting away from an anthropocentric universe. We consider that\, in the foreseen future\, humans will continue using the machine as their tool\, not the other way around. \n\nThe first genuinely 21st-century Architecture design method\n\nTaubman College is perceived as a pioneer within this novel area of inquiry in the architecture discipline – an area that will affect every aspect of the discipline. Not only the theory but also the practice\, the construction\, and the use of architecture. It is possibly the first genuinely 21st-century Architecture development\, as it will change the way architecture is conceived\, designed\, and built on a massive scale. Posing questions about authorship\, the nature of ingenuity\, of imagination\, and creativity the proposition discusses a posthuman world operating within this frame of considerations. \n\nDemystifying Artificial Intelligence\n\nA particular goal of this Symposium is to demystify Artificial Intelligence for the population of the architecture community as much as for the public at large. The term AI evokes dark pictures of dominance\, control\, and surveillance triggered through movie productions such as Terminator\, The Matrix\, and Ex Machina. Nothing could be farther away from the truth. The bigger danger these days are data abuse and bias in datasets. Both of which form part of a conversation within the program of the Symposium. For one the ethical questions of operating AI’s within the architecture discipline. Questions that are discussed in interdisciplinary panels consisting of architects\, computer scientists\,s and roboticists.\n\nWednesday\, November 2\, 2022\n\nKeynote Lecture by Dr. Lev Manovich\n\"Artificial Intelligence\, Big Data\, and Study of Culture\"\n5:00pm – 6:30pm\nTaubman College Commons\n\nExhibition Opening Reception\n7:00pm – 9:00pm\nLiberty Research Annex\n\nThursday\, November 3\, 2022\n\nSymposium Sessions\n9:00am - 6:00pm\nTaubman College Commons\n\nSession 1: An Introduction into our world through the eyes of artificial intelligence \nSession 2: Do Machines dream of architecture?\nSession 3: Neural Architecture – A paradigm shift in architecture design\nSession 4: Roundtable: The emergence of a posthuman design ecology\n\nDetailed session descriptions and schedules can be viewed at neural-architecture.org\n\nThis symposium will be presented in person at the Art & Architecture Building and on Zoom. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Kawakami Hiromi and the Queering of Distant Intimacies: Reading Japanese Literature from Hong Kong and Taiwan
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 110 Weiser Hall and virtually via Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/G1J1M\n\nKawakami Hiromi (1958–) writes about distance and the limitations of intimacy on a minor scale through small details of everyday life. In her talk\, Grace En-Yi Ting reflects on what it means to read Kawakami’s work now—from multilingual spaces of longing tied to Hong Kong and Taiwan and in a world broadly defined by new forms of distance and loss. What are the texts\, reading practices\, and languages that find us and how might they accompany us in these times?\n \n Grace En-Yi Ting (Ph.D. Yale University) is an Assistant Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She specializes in queer and feminist approaches to Japanese literature and popular culture. Other work deals with race and gender in the academy and transnational discourses of queerness and translation across Japanese\, Sinophone\, and Asian American literary contexts. Her recent article “Ekuni Kaori’s Tears in the Night: The Brilliance of Queer Readings for Japanese Literary Studies” (2021) received Honorable Mention for the Kenneth B. Pyle Prize for Best Article in the Journal of Japanese Studies.\n\nThis lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Epidemiology Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 3 (12:00pm - 1:00pm)\nSPH II: M1020 (will be livestreamed)\n1415 Washington Heights\n\nRSVP for the event at: https://forms.gle/J9rhJcCGBbjwQAkz9\n\nMichigan Farmworker Project - Alexis Handal\, PhD\, MPH\nThe Michigan Farmworker Project (MFP) is a community-based participatory research project that aims to provide a deeper understanding of the complex intersection of working and living conditions with occupational and environmental health exposures among migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the state of Michigan. The MFP seeks to identify indicators of precarious employment and labor exploitation in the farmworker community and relate this understanding to farmworker’s psychosocial\, occupational\, environmental\, and social risk factors. The MFP also aims to identify gaps in service provision and policy and programmatic needs\, incorporating recommendations from the farmworker community to address their current working and living conditions. This seminar will provide an overview of the development and implementation of the MFP\, the challenges faced\, and preliminary findings and policy implications.\n\nAbout Dr. Handal\n\nAlexis J. Handal is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the UM School of Public Health. Her research expertise is in occupational and environmental epidemiology\, reproductive epidemiology\, social epidemiology\, and global health\; in particular\, she works with Latinx and Indigenous populations in Latin America and in the United States. Dr. Handal studies the impact of large-scale agricultural production on the health of workers and surrounding communities\, and with a particular focus on the health of female workers and pregnant workers and their families. Her community-engaged and participatory research approach uses a health equity lens focusing on understanding the interconnection between chemical exposures\, and social and work stressors and supports in the context of precarious employment\, on worker health and on maternal and child health and development. Alexis appreciates and promotes the use of community-based participatory research (CBPR) and mixed methods approaches in epidemiologic research. Over the past two decades\, Dr. Handal has worked in Ecuador studying the impact of export-led flower production on maternal and child health and child development. Her early studies identified important factors that may adversely impact child health and development such as toxic exposures\, maternal stress\, and nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition. Her current NIEHS-funded birth cohort study\, SEMILLA (Study of Environmental Exposure of Mothers and Infants Impacted by Large-Scale Agriculture) (R011ES026603)\, in collaboration with Dr. Fadya Orozco at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito\, examines the impact of fungicidal exposure and other critical social stressors associated with the presence of the flower industry on pregnancy and subsequent infant health. Dr. Handal also leads the Michigan Farmworker Project (MFP)\, in collaboration with Dr. Lisbeth Iglesias-Rios (post-doctoral fellow). The MFP is a CBPR program that examines the complex working and living conditions of farmworkers and their families in Michigan and the impact on farmworker health and well-being.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sexual Violence\, Gendered Economies\, Risky Subjects
DESCRIPTION:Sexual violence\, as a human rights and public policy issue\, has emerged as a critical area of scholarly inquiry in local and global contexts. Studies by the World Health Organization\, World Bank\, and others point to the macroeconomic impact of gender-based violence on survivors’ health and well-being as well as on public budgets\, through healthcare expenditures\, legal services\, and diminished educational outcomes. Does financial inclusion and equitable access to care change women’s experiences of sexual violence in private and public? How do we assess policies which empower women by eliminating lending bias\, but which purportedly frame women as vulnerable rather than as risk-taking\, ensuring sexual/financial safety through stereotypically female workspaces? Drawing from a mixed-methods study of rape victims’ public suicides in postcolonial India\, this interdisciplinary blue bag lunch talk will explore the insights it can offer to our gendered understandings of violence\, vulnerability and risk\, and discuss innovative policy measures.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Book Talk. \"Democracy in Hard Places\"
DESCRIPTION:The last fifteen years have witnessed a \"democratic recession.\" Democracies previously thought to be well-established--Hungary\, Poland\, Brazil\, and even the United States--have been threatened by the rise of ultra-nationalist and populist leaders who pay lip-service to the will of the people while daily undermining the freedom and pluralism that are the foundations of democratic governance. The possibility of democratic collapse where we least expected it has added new urgency to the age-old inquiry into how democracy\, once attained\, can be made to last.\n \nIn *Democracy in Hard Places\,* Scott Mainwaring and Tarek Masoud bring together a distinguished cast of contributors to illustrate how democracies around the world continue to survive even in an age of democratic decline. Collectively\, they argue that we can learn much from democratic survivals that were just as unexpected as the democratic erosions that have occurred in some corners of the developed world.\n\n-Oxford University Press\, 2022\n \nVolume Editors:\n \nScott Mainwaring's research and teaching focus on democratization and authoritarianism\, political parties and party systems\, and Latin American politics. His work with Aníbal Pérez-Liñán\, *Democracies and Dictatorships in Latin America: Emergence\, Survival\, and Fall* (Cambridge University Press\, 2013) won the best book prizes of the Comparative Politics section of the American Political Science Association and of the Political Institutions section of the Latin American Studies Association. Mainwaring was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. In April 2019\, *PS: Political Science and Politics* listed him as one of the 50 most cited political scientists in the world. He served as the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor for Brazil Studies and as faculty co-chair of the Brazil Studies program at Harvard University from 2016 to 2019.\n \nTarek Masoud is the co-editor of the *Journal of Democracy* of the National Endowment for Democracy\, and serves as the Faculty Director of the Kennedy School's Middle East Initiative and the Initiative on Democracy in Hard Places. His research focuses on political development in Arabic-speaking and Muslim-majority countries. He is the author of *Counting Islam: Religion\, Class\, and Elections in Egypt* (Cambridge University Press\, 2014)\; *The Arab Spring: Pathways of Repression and Reform* with Jason Brownlee and Andrew Reynolds (Oxford University Press\, 2015)\; and several articles and book chapters. He is a 2009 Carnegie Scholar\, a trustee of the American University in Cairo\, and the recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation and the Paul and Daisy Soros foundation\, among others.\n \nChapter Authors:\n \nRachel Beatty Riedl is the Director of Cornell's Einaudi Center. Her research interests include institutional development in new democracies\, local governance and decentralization policy\, authoritarian regime legacies\, and religion and politics\, with a regional focus in Sub-Saharan Africa. Previously\, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science\, Faculty Fellow in the Institute for Policy Research\, and Director of the Program of African Studies at Northwestern University. She has also been a visiting fellow at the Yale Program on Democracy\, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies\, and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. She was a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served as Chair of the Democracy and Autocracy section of the American Political Science Association. Riedl is co-host of the podcast \"Ufahamu Africa\,\" featuring weekly episodes of news highlights and interviews about life and politics on the African continent.\n \nDan Slater specializes in the politics and history of enduring dictatorships and emerging democracies\, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. He is the author of *From Development to Democracy: The Transformations of Modern Asia* with Joseph Wong (Princeton University Press\, 2022)\; *Ordering Power: Contentious Politics and Authoritarian Leviathans in Southeast Asia* (Cambridge University Press\, 2010)\; and co-editor of *Southeast Asia in Political Science: Theory\, Region\, and Qualitative Analysis* (Stanford University Press\, 2008).\n\nThis even will be held both in person and webcast via Zoom. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Intro to Neurodiversity: Unmasking Autism
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming DEI event:\n\nIntro to Neurodiversity: Unmasking Autism\, in conversation with social psychologist/professor/author Devon Price\, PhD\n\nAn event sponsored by the Michigan Medicine Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) DEI Committee\n\nWhen: Thursday\, November 3\, 2022 1:00-3:00pm EST (Zoom Webinar)\n\nRegister in advance: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OpxZB0K9RJ6g3E5vCO2ABQ\n\n*After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\nThis event is open to anyone at Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan\; please feel free to share with your peers! \n\nDescription of the Presentation: In this presentation\, Dr. Devon Price introduces attendees to the neurodiversity movement and the social model of disability\, explains what Autism really is versus the pervasive myths we've all been told about the neurotype\, and outlines essential accommodations that neurodiverse people require from care providers\, in their workplaces\, and from public institutions. This workshop places particular emphasis on the phenomenon of masked Autism\, where marginalized and under-diagnosed populations of Autistic people are required to camouflage and compensate for their Autistic traits because they do not meet the cultural stereotype of what Autism \"looks like\" and thus receive far less support. The costs of masking and the ways in which narrow social standards force disabled people to mask\, and how we might collectively work to build a more accepting society will also be highlighted.\n\nAbout the presenter: Dr. Devon Price is the author of the books Laziness Does Not Exist and Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity. He is a social psychologist and professor at Loyola University of Chicago’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Devon's work has appeared in Slate\, Business Insider\, Financial Times\, HuffPost\, Psychology Today\, and on NPR and PBS\, and he has given recent speaking engagements at Nike\, Indeed\, The University of North Carolina\, Ohio State University\, the Ontario Public Library System\, the Ohio Board of Developmental Disabilities\, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Can a Literary Mafia Affect Your Choice of Books?\": Jews\, Publishing\, and American Literature
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s and 1970s\, many American authors\, Jewish and non-Jewish alike\, complained about a “Jewish literary mafia.” While perniciously circulating antisemitic ideas\, such claims also reflected the remarkable success of Jews in the U.S. publishing industry. How did Jews’ roles in publishing influence the development of American literature? How can attention to this story help to produce a more equitable industry now? \n\nThis is a hybrid event. Register for the virtual stream here: https://myumi.ch/kyJmr\n\n*Josh Lambert* is the Sophia Moses Robison Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and English\, and director of the Jewish Studies Program\, at Wellesley College. He did his undergraduate work at Harvard and his doctorate at the University of Michigan\, and before Wellesley he taught at NYU\, UMass Amherst\, and Princeton\, and served as the Academic Director of the Yiddish Book Center. SUMMARY:Presentation:ChE Seminar: \"Redefining\, repurposing\, and reprogramming post-translational modification enzymes\"
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nABSTRACT:\nThe ability to introduce a chemo- and regioselective post-translational modification (PTM) into a protein is foundational to our understanding of health and disease and is at the center of most chemical biology\, synthetic biology\, biotechnological and biomedical advances. The Denard Lab aims to redefine\, repurpose\, and reprogram enzymes that catalyze PTMs (PTM-enzymes)\, with a focus on proteases and protein ligases. We think of reprogramming a PTM-enzyme in three ways: through protein engineering to modify its biochemical properties\, by functional interactions with a selective ligand\, through substrate engineering and profiling. To achieve these goals\, we have developed several high-throughput functional screens.\n\nIn this talk\, I will first present our current results on engineering the specificity of a human protease towards new targets\, using a high throughput directed evolution platform called YESS 2.0. Our long-term goal is to engineer proteases capable of degrading aggregated proteins. Such engineered enzymes could serve as modalities to investigate and treat protein aggregation diseases (synucleopathies\, transthyretin amyloidosis). In early results\, we have isolated neurosin variants with switched specificity capable of cleaving peptide substrates found in alpha-synuclein. These variants exhibit reduced activity towards a consensus sequence found in protease activatable receptors. Second\, I will share our recent advancements in developing a high-throughput platform to discover protein-based modulators that can reprogram a PTM-enzyme. Our platform is designed to isolate protein-based binders\, including nanobodies\, antibodies\, ScFvs\, that can inhibit\, activate\, or change the substrate specificity of an enzyme. Our results have established this platform as a high-throughput discovery for protease inhibitory nanobodies. Lastly\, we developed a platform to comprehensively profile the substrate specificity of sortases. Using Streptococcus pyogenes sortase A as a model\, we show that extending the sortase substrate beyond the P1’ residue enhances sortase-mediated ligation kinetics. Most importantly\, this comprehensive profiling reveals several non-canonical sortase substrates\, some of which exhibit higher ligation kinetics compared to known sortase substrates. \n\nBIO:\nDr. Denard received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He then moved to the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, where he obtained his PhD under the tutelage of Prof. Huimin Zhao. As a Dow Chemical fellow\, his PhD thesis centered on developing cooperative one-pot chemoenzymatic reactions. Dr. Denard later completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of Prof. Brent Iverson at the University of Texas at Austin establishing high-throughput platforms for engineering the substrate specificity of proteases to enable their use as protein therapeutics. Dr. Denard joined the University of Florida Chemical Engineering department as an Assistant Professor in January 2022. His research focuses on protein engineering for therapeutic and synthetic biology applications\, with a focus on reprogramming PTM-enzymes. For these ongoing efforts\, the Denard lab received the NIH MIRA award in September 2022

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Lecture: Challenges in Modernizing the National Airspace System
DESCRIPTION:Lesley A. Weitz\nSenior Principal Aerospace Engineer and Department Chief Scientist\nThe MITRE Corporation\, Center for Advanced Aviation System Development\n\nAbout the seminar:\nThe MITRE Corporation’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) is the Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In this role\, MITRE CAASD works with the FAA to study and improve today’s operations in the National Airspace System (NAS) and envision future operations and their enabling technologies. The future NAS will support diverse users – uncrewed systems\, Advanced Air Mobility\, space launch and re-entry operations\, as well as traditional air transport and general aviation operations – through increasing levels of automation and information exchange to aid in data-driven decision making and proactive safety monitoring. \n\nThis presentation will provide a high-level overview of MITRE CAASD’s work supporting the FAA in achieving a more information-centric NAS that supports diverse airspace users. Real-world challenges where technology\, human decision makers and operators\, policies\, and budgets intersect will be highlighted. If that is not ambitious enough\, this presentation will also cover workforce needs\, where you will be thoroughly convinced your aerospace engineering education was the best decision you have ever made. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Lesley A. Weitz is a Senior Principal Aerospace Engineer and Department Chief Scientist in MITRE CAASD. Her current research includes advanced avionics for NextGen concepts\, including concept development\, design\, trajectory modeling\, and performance analysis. Dr. Weitz is also leading a project to study the use of an aggregate NAS network model to study how traffic management strategies impact NAS resilience. Dr. Weitz is the Chair of an avionics standards body developing advanced avionics applications\, and she developed an inter-aircraft spacing algorithm (think automatic cruise control for airplanes) as part of that work. \n\nDr. Weitz received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2002 from the University at Buffalo and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2005 and 2009\, respectively. She is the author of over 45 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers. Additionally\, she has been awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office entitled\, “Methods and Systems for Determining Required Interval Management Performance.” Dr. Weitz is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)\, a former Chair of the Guidance\, Navigation\, and Control Technical Committee\, and is currently the Director of the AIAA Aerospace Sciences Group.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - VIRTUAL: (Re)building the coral tree of life: *through ocean exploration\, museum specimens* and *genomic discovery*
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nCorals and their relatives are some of the most ecologically important metazoans on earth\, from shallow waters to the deep sea. With ocean conditions changing at rates faster than previously recognized\, we must determine the factors that shape coral diversity across depth\, space\, and time. And because the drivers of marine diversity are poorly known in the largest environment on earth—the deep sea—I often focus my questions on processes that generate deep-sea coral diversity. Therefore\, with collaborators across the world\, I am combining genomic approaches with museum specimens and ocean exploration to rebuild the coral tree of life and answer fundamental questions regarding coral diversity.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

Among them\, there are 24 Fellows of ASA\, IMS\, ASQ\, IAQ\, and IIE\, four are editors of major statistics journals\, and one is a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada (FRSC). He co-authors with Mike Hamada the book \"Experiments: Planning\, Analysis\, and Optimization\" (Wiley\, 3rd ed. 2021) and with R. Mukerjee the book “A Modern Theory of Factorial Designs” (Springer\, 2006). \n\nAbstract: Most “learning” in big data is driven by the data alone. Some people may believe this is sufficient because of the sheer data size. If the physical world is involved\, this approach is often insufficient. In this talk I will give a recent study to illustrate how physics and data are used jointly to learn about the “truth” of the physical world. It also serves as an example of engineering analytics\, which in itself has many forms and meanings. In an attempt to understand the turbulence behavior of an injector\, a new design methodology is needed which combines engineering physics\, computer simulations and statistical modeling. There are two key challenges: the simulation of high-fidelity spatial-temporal flows (using the Navier-Stokes equations) is computationally expensive\, and the analysis and modeling of this data requires physical insights and statistical tools. A surrogate model is presented for efficient flow prediction in injectors with varying geometries\, devices commonly used in many engineering applications. The novelty lies in incorporating properties of the fluid flow as simplifying model assumptions\, which allows for quick emulation in practical turnaround times\, and also reveals interesting flow physics which can guide further investigations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Charge Quantum Spin Liquid
DESCRIPTION:One remarkable consequence of the strong electronic correlation in quantum materials is the emergence of new quasiparticles that are fundamentally different from electrons. Identification of these quasiparticles is a central question but remains a huge challenge\, especially when they are charge neutral. One exciting platform for hunting the neutral quasiparticles is the quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized in Mott insulators. Despite the existence of QSL being well established by several exactly solvable models\, a conclusive identification by experiment is still lacking. In this talk\, I will discuss our recent efforts [1\, 2] to study the remnant charge signature associated with QSL in Mott insulators\, which may serve as smoking gun evidence for the existence of QSL. I will present two mechanisms\, which are closely related to the well-known Landau diamagnetism in metals and the Meissner effect in superconductors\, on how neutral quasiparticles develop charged responses. I will demonstrate these mechanisms through the model calculations of Kitaev QSL and chiral QSL.\n\n[1] Saikat Banerjee\, Shi-Zeng Lin\, arXiv:2208.06887\n[2] Shi-Zeng Lin\, arXiv:2210.06550\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Working with Contemporary Artists:
DESCRIPTION:“Art is what makes life more interesting than art\,” said French artist Robert Filliou. He was right: working with contemporary artists is one of the most enriching activities that a professional or an organization can undertake. Whether in a museum\, other cultural institution\, or any public or private position\, working with artists will unleash interpretations and emotions. In a globally interconnected\, culturally diverse\, and increasingly complex world\, contemporary artists give voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities\, values\, and beliefs. Their work is always at the crossroad of theory\, subjects\, concepts\, methods\, and materials. The increasing role of audiences can generate unexpected results that can benefit both individuals and communities. \nIn this workshop\, we will study the conceptual\, practical\, ethical\, legal\, and financial elements to consider when working with contemporary artists. We will also examine many successful (and a few unfortunate) examples that will help us to understand how art\, according to Yoko Ono\, makes us “walk a half an inch above ground.\"\n\nhttp://ummsp.rackham.umich.edu/tribe-event/working-with-contemporary-artists-a-workshop-with-ferran-barenblit/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Models of Cardiac Performance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMedical imaging provides several opportunities to collect data for building patient-specific computational models of the heart. These models estimate performance variables that may not be measured directly (e.g.\, tissue stress and strain\, hemodynamics\, or electrical activity). Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can acquire time-resolved images that quantitatively encode structure\, function\, flow\, and remodeling. This talk will summarize recent advances on how these MRI data are acquired and fused using computational models to produce microstructurally anchored measures of patient-specific cardiac performance.\n\nBio:\nDaniel Ennis {he/him} is a Professor in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University. As an MRI scientist for nearly twenty-five years\, he has worked to develop advanced translational cardiovascular MRI methods for quantitatively assessing structure\, function\, flow\, and remodeling in both adult and pediatric populations. He began his research career as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University during which time he formed an active collaboration with investigators in the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics at the National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). Thereafter\, he joined the Departments of Radiological Sciences and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University as a postdoc and began to establish an independent research program with an NIH K99/R00 award focused on “Myocardial Structure\, Function\, and Remodeling in Mitral Regurgitation.” For ten years he led a group of clinicians and scientists at UCLA working to develop and evaluate advanced cardiovascular MRI exams as PI of several NIH funded studies. In 2018 he returned to the Department of Radiology at Stanford University as faculty in the Radiological Sciences Lab to bolster programs in cardiovascular MRI. He is also the Director of Radiology Research for the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System where he oversees a growing radiology research program.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:EER Prospective Student Open House
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique\, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) are part of a college-wide program\, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines\, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/). We will be hosting a Hybrid Open House on Thursday and Friday\, 11/03/22 and 11/04/22. Students from all institutions are invited to attend\, whether in-person or by Zoom (a zoom link will be emailed prior to the program). Participants will hear about the EER graduate program\, meet faculty and graduate students\, tour the beautiful University of Michigan campus\, and learn about career opportunities as an UM graduate in this field. For participants who travel within the U.S.\, a limited number of travel grants are available to offset the costs of traveling to Ann Arbor\, so please register soon. Note that we highly encourage applicants to the EER graduate program to have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a traditional engineering discipline. Please register to attend at this open house registration site (tinyurl.com/2022EERUM) and please forward this link to any friends who may be interested. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Unmaking a Russian\, Making An American: Nicholas Wreden's Life in Translation
DESCRIPTION:In 1935\, bookseller Nicholas Wreden published a memoir called \"The Unmaking of a Russian\"\, describing his journey from a middle-class\, patriotic identity in late Imperial Russia though his flight from the Revolution and reinvention as an American citizen with a comfortable home in White Plains\, NY. Yet in the twenty years before his sudden death in 1955 at the age of 53\, Wreden would live many more lives - as a highly regarded translator from Russian\, as a bookstore manager for Scribner's\, and as an editor and a publishing executive (for Dutton and Little\, Brown) commissioning both Russian and American literature. In his many influential roles\, he helped choose the books selected for reading by US troops (the Armed Services Editions distributed during the Second World War) as well as determining the Russian-language literature available to America's Russian diaspora through his involvement with the Chekhov Publishing House. In this paper\, I will explore how Wreden's self-described 'unmaking' as a Russian led him to live many parallel American lives\, and why his double role as a translator and as an editor was significant in shaping our conception of what Russian literature means today. This paper is part of a book project on how literary translators formed the American reception of Russian literature in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries\, funded by the European Research Council (ERC). \n\nMuireann Maguire is Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature at the University of Exeter\, UK. Her academic specializations include contemporary literary translation (and publishing)\, Gothic-fantastic literature\, fictional representations of pregnancy and childbirth\, and the nineteenth-century Russian novel. Her book Stalin’s Ghosts: Gothic Themes in Early Soviet Literature was published by Peter Lang in 2012\; in 2021 she co-edited (with Timothy Langen) Reading Backwards: An Advance Retrospective on Russian Literature (Open Book). She has published two anthologies of Russian supernatural tales in her own translation\, Red Spectres (2012) and White Magic (2021).She has published articles on wizards\, breastfeeding\, spaceships to Mars\, and other academic topics in Modern Language Review\, Slavic Review\, the Slavonic and East European Review\, and elsewhere. As Principal Investigator on RUSTRANS\, a research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC)\, she is currently working on a book project about literary translators and editors in the USA.\n\nPlease Register to Join the Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99964109570?pwd=a0IyM0xyRHRUai90enM5VkN1UzBxQT09

Alongside research of social work practices with immigrant communities\, Belaya documents the expertise of these artists to examine communal care of immigrant women in the United States.\n\nFeaturing filmed interviews of immigrant women artists living in New York City\, live video projection mixing\, movement\, and music written for string quartet + jazz quintet. Sonya Belaya in collaboration with Laura Sofía Pérez\, featuring Grey McMurray and students at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.\n\nSonya Belaya is a Russian-American pianist\, singer\, composer\, and improviser\, who divides her time between Michigan and New York. Committed to multiplicity\, she is a diverse music-maker invested in vulnerable art and the development of strong\, personal collaborations. Her work centers on the integration of womxn’s trauma as musical narrative\, with a focus on storytelling as a symbol of powerful vulnerability. Sonya is a 2020-2021 Resident Artist at Roulette Intermedium\, made possible by the Jerome Foundation. She has performed as a pianist and singer with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, New Music Detroit\, Wild Up\, Michigan Opera Theatre\, Russian Renaissance\, and Bang on a Can All-Stars. The ensemble seeks to preserve and re-contextualize the ancestral memories of Russian folk traditions. Consisting of musicians from diverse music backgrounds\, the project uses storytelling and improvisation as a governing principle to transcend these differences for deeper musical dialogue. Dacha was born out of a necessity to find a sense of home and belonging\, when Belaya’s mother went missing in 2014. This resulted in the first project\, “Songs My Mother Taught Me”\, a five song cycle released in May 2019. Belaya released a second album with the ensemble\, “Dacha: Live at Roulette”\, in September 2020.\n\nLaura Sofía Pérez is an interdisciplinary artist who works in video\, film\, sound\, and installation.
