SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:EER Prospective Student Open House
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM’s graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM’s EER program represents a unique\, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) are part of a college-wide program\, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines\, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/). We will be hosting a Hybrid Open House on Thursday and Friday\, 11/03/22 and 11/04/22. Students from all institutions are invited to attend\, whether in-person or by Zoom (a zoom link will be emailed prior to the program). Participants will hear about the EER graduate program\, meet faculty and graduate students\, tour the beautiful University of Michigan campus\, and learn about career opportunities as an UM graduate in this field. For participants who travel within the U.S.\, a limited number of travel grants are available to offset the costs of traveling to Ann Arbor\, so please register soon. Note that we highly encourage applicants to the EER graduate program to have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a traditional engineering discipline. Please register to attend at this open house registration site (tinyurl.com/2022EERUM) and please forward this link to any friends who may be interested. SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CAS Workshop | Modern State and \"Internal\" Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:In parallel to the process of external colonization around the world\, modern state makers simultaneously conquered and colonized people and places within their territorial boundaries by rendering them legible through knowledge production and manageable through force\, coercion\, intimidation\, and\, at times\, reward. Mountains\, deserts\, and valleys that have sustained ecosystems of livelihood beyond the control of\, and often despite\, central administrations became the last bastions of coexistence challenging the expansion of modern state. Scholars such as Harold Wolpe\, Rivera Cusicanqui\, Robert Blauner\, Michael Hechter\, James Scott\, and Uğur Ümit Üngör have applied the theory of internal colonialism to state-making processes in places as far and wide as\, respectively\, South Africa\, Latin America\, North/Black America\, England\, Southeast Asia\, and Turkey. Seemingly provincial yet global in scale\, such a wide-ranging applicability shows that internal colonialism has been as widespread and crucial as external colonization—i.e.\, colonialism *par excellence*—in the making of the modern world. \n\nThis workshop brings together scholars whose works challenge disciplinary boundaries and existing periodizations and who engage creatively with underrepresented themes and groups in different parts of the world. The main objective is to explore different approaches to intercommunal relations and environmental circumstances *before\, during*\, and *after *the absorption of nonstate people and places into a centrally administered modern state. By employing approaches outside state-society\, center-periphery\, and sovereign-subject dichotomies in conversation with one another\, we hope to qualify the metanarratives of collective communal violence that treat ethnic and religious communities as hostile and monolithic entities. The workshop hopes to shed light on the role of the modern state in transforming intercommunal relations and in shaping collective memories. \n\nTo these ends\, the first panel discusses narratives of cohabitation and state evasion in the imperial and post-imperial settings. The second panel discusses the transformation of ecosystems of coexistence outside direct state control and the ways in which such pasts are remembered. The roundtable brings together both sets of panelists to discuss internal colonialism as a conceptual framework in exploring the processes of modern state-making and its role in transforming people and places\, both in history and memory. \n\nNovember 4\, 2022 Program\n\n09:30 - 9:45 Tea/Coffee \n\n9:45 -10:00 Opening Remarks and Introductions \n Gottfried Hagen\, University of Michigan\n Hakem Al-Rustom\, University of Michigan\n Cevat Dargın\, University of Michigan\n\n10:00 - 11:15 Keynote Speaker\n Ussama Makdisi\, University of California\, Berkeley\n \"Coexistence in an Age of Genocide\"\n\n11:15 -11:30 Break\n\n11:30 - 1:30	Panel I: Cohabitation\, Conflict\, and Internal Colonialism\n Moderator and commentator: Fatma Müge Göçek\, University of Michigan \n\n Panelist 1: Christopher Gratien\, University of Virginia \n \"Ahmet Cevdet's Civilizing Mission in Cilicia\"\n\n Panelist 2: Zozan Pehlivan\, University of Minnesota\n\"The Empire of Priorities: Ottoman State Policies in the Age of Scarcity\"\n\n Panelist 3: Cevat Dargın\, University of Michigan \n Title: The Kizilbash Kurds' Dangerous Mission: Smuggling Armenian Genocide \"The Kizilbash Kurds' Dangerous Mission: Smuggling Armenian Genocide\nSurvivors to Safety During World War I\"\n. \n1:30 - 2:30 Lunch\n\n2:30 - 4:30 Panel II: Transcolonial Existences\, Violence\, and Remembrance \n Moderator and Commentator: Kathryn Babayan\, University of Michigan\n\n Panelist 1: Robert Sukiasyan\, Armenian Collection at the Shoah Foundation\n \"Digital Map of Deportations of Armenians of Sivas/Sepastia Province during \nthe Armenian Genocide\"\n\n Panelist 2: Hazal Özdemir\, Northwestern University\n\"They Vowed Never to Return: Armenian Transatlantic Mobility and \nDenaturalization at the end of the Ottoman Empire\"\n\n Panelist 3: Roxana Maria Aras\, University of Michigan\n \"In Search for Futures Lost: Waqf\, Parish\, and Locality among Rum Orthodox \nin Beirut\"\n\n4:30 - 4:45 Break\n\n4:45 - 5:30	Roundtable Discussion\n Moderator: Juan Cole\, University of Michigan\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at vmmourad@umich.edu. Food is social\, whether served at a formal banquet or eaten on the street with friends. Food is lauded for its authenticity but is endlessly crossing borders and taking on new lives. Jjajangmyeon is Chinese food in Korea and Korean food abroad. One can eat sundubu jjigae in Seoul without realizing it was popularized in southern California. A bowl of budae jjigae remembers conflict but offers comfort.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Korea Foundation.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alum Connection with Harlene Ellin: How an LSA Degree unlocked endless career possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Harlene Ellin identified her enthusiasm for communications early in her career and by activating her network of connections\, she quickly found opportunities\, both full-time and gigs\, in a number of industries including freelance writing for the Chicago Tribune and Times\, working as an interior designer\, and leading communications strategy for the Women’s March Chicago and CARPLS Legal Aide. In each industry\, Harlene used the skills she learned as an LSA student to align her career with causes she cared about and move the needle on issues of importance to her. From journalism to nonprofits to legal\, Harlene highlights the flexibility that an LSA degree can offer\, and is now coming back to campus to share her hard-earned wisdom and life lessons with current LSA students. \n\nAbout Harlene:\n\nAfter graduating with B.A. in English and Political Science from U-M\, Harlene pursued a law degree as planned. She quickly learned that life doesn’t follow a linear path\, but often includes unexpected twists and turns. After dropping out of law school\, Harlene’s shifted her focus\, or what she calls career “corkscrews”\, to earn a M.A. from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and working as an award-winning news and feature writer for a variety of major news outlets. She also has held various communications-related positions — from public relations assistant to communications director — in both the private and non-profit sectors.\n\nA lifelong lover of art\, architecture and design\, Harlene returned to school yet again. This time she earned a degree in interior design from Harrington School of Design\, while raising her three children. She went on to work for several years as a residential interior designer in the Chicago area. Most recently\, Harlene has been highly engaged in political activism\, using her varied skill set to advance progressive causes such as abortion access\, women’s rights and gun reform.\n\nYou should attend this session if you are:\n- A U-M undergraduate LSA student \n- Interested in journalism\, writing\, communications\, nonprofit work\, or interior design\n- Exploring multiple career aspirations and interests\n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\n- Make a connection with a successful LSA alum ready to support you\n- Get ideas for how to build a career when your path is not traditional\n- Learn how to build your networking skills\n\nRSVP NOW to be part of the conversation. \n\nThe Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is in a wheelchair-accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms\, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom\, places to sit or stand during the event\, and accessible parking options nearby. To request other accommodations please contact Sairah Husain at sairah@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Beyond Center and Periphery: Locating Southeast Asia in the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the relationship between religion and spatiality through a study of the emergence of transoceanic religious geography that links Southeast Asia and South Arabia. This geographic imaginary links two regions commonly regarded as “peripheral” in the study of Islam and Islamic history. Muslims from these so-called “peripheral” regions\, however\, have for long presented their respective homelands as spatial realizations of Islamic cosmology and as privileged sites for moral education and ethical becoming. Tracing how this transoceanic religious geography came about allows us to rethink established center-periphery models that have continued to shape our understanding of the history and geography of Islam. Instead of a Muslim world made up of unchanging centers and peripheries\, the talk uncovers the existence of competing for religious geographies\, shifting centers of Islam\, and forms of devotional mobility with multiple directionalities. Understanding how a “peripheral” region like Southeast Asia becomes religiously central to people elsewhere (South Arabia and the Swahili coast of Africa\, for example)\, in turn\, helps us to think about comparable processes that have sustained the religious significance of other regions.\n \n Ismail Fajrie Alatas is an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in the Department of History at New York University. His primary research interest is in Islam in the Indian Ocean world particularly\, the historical and contemporary connections between Southeast Asia and South Arabia. Professor Alatas' work examines the intersections of religious authority\, social formation\, mobility\, semiotics and communicative practice with a focus on Islamic Law\, Sufism\, and the Hadrami diaspora in Indonesia. He received his PhD in Anthropology and History from the University of Michigan\, his MA from National University of Singapore\, and his BA from the University of Melbourne.\n\nRegister at: http://myumi.ch/qA48G

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE200 Seminar Series | Global Civil Aviation\, Sustainability\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer A. Haverkamp\nGraham Family Director\, Graham Sustainability Institute\nProfessor from Practice\, Michigan Law School\nProfessor of Practice\, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\n\nAbout the seminar:\nIn this guest lecture\, Professor Haverkamp will discuss how the aviation industry is addressing sustainability concerns\, and\, in particular\, its response to the flying public’s increasingly critical focus on aviation’s contribution to global climate change. She will cover the U.S. government agencies and international institutions responsible for setting environmental policies and adjudicating disputes in the civil aviation sector. She will also describe the “basket of measures” through which the international aviation industry is working to reduce its carbon footprint. In particular\, she will introduce the class to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s 2016 agreement to limit GHG emissions through a carbon offsetting scheme (an agreement she helped negotiate while at the State Department)\, and examine the agreement’s effectiveness and level of industry support. She will conclude with an assessment of how the U.S. government\, with its “all of government” approach to climate change\, is tackling the problem in the aviation sector. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nJennifer Haverkamp is the Graham Family Director of U-M’s Graham Sustainability Institute\, a professor of practice at Michigan Law School\, and a professor from practice at the Ford School of Public Policy. She also co-chaired President Schlissel’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality. Professor Haverkamp previously served as the U.S. State Department’s Ambassador and Special Representative for Environment and Water Resources\, where in 2016 she led the successful negotiations of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s landmark CORSIA agreement to control global greenhouse gas emissions and the Kigali HFC-phasedown amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Ms. Haverkamp also directed Environmental Defense Fund's International Climate Program\, served as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources in the Executive Office of the President\, and held posts at the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice. She has taught at Cornell Law School\, George Washington University’s law school and Johns Hopkins graduate school\, and has served on USTR's Trade and Environment Policy Advisory Committee and a number of nonprofit boards. Ms. Haverkamp holds a J.D. from Yale Law School\, an M.A. in politics and philosophy from Oxford University (as a Rhodes Scholar) and a B.A. in biology from The College of Wooster.\n\nJOIN VIA ZOOM: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUkde6spz4iGdx6RMbUhy8yTeUC2Xk1i7vo

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Uncertainty of Corporate Sustainability Metrics
DESCRIPTION:Researchers have long studied corporate performance metrics for organizational and financial performance. However\, we still know little about how to design sustainability metrics that can move organizations towards better societal outcomes. Questions remain regarding the substantive areas of sustainability performance that should be measured\, how data should be aggregated\, and how metrics can be engineered to reduce greenwashing. In this paper\, we propose a framework to assess corporate sustainability metrics based on the level of uncertainty associated with the effectiveness of the metric and its measurement. We consider whether the metric is measuring management processes or outcomes and discuss how the choice of metrics with lower uncertainty may hamper some types of greenwashing. We argue that organizations should use outcome metrics when uncertainty in measuring the performance outcome is low\, and process-based metrics when the outcome is difficult to measure or the link between process and outcome is undetermined. When both types of uncertainty are high\, it is unclear whether metrics should be used at all. We illustrate our framework with examples of corporate disclosure in the areas of social and environmental metrics. Our framework enriches our understanding of the uncertainty associated with corporate sustainability disclosures and can be useful for government agencies thinking about mandated disclosures\, for managers thinking about what metrics to disclose\, and for researchers developing or using sustainability metrics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Victor Tsai\, Brown University
DESCRIPTION:Why do earthquakes damage buildings? Many buildings are damaged most heavily by high-frequency ground motion rather than longer period shaking. Despite the importance of these high-frequency ground motions\, most frictional models for earthquakes generally underpredict how strong they are\, even when heterogeneous friction and realistic roughness are accounted for. In this talk\, I discuss the role of complex fault zones in generating high-frequency ground motions\, with a focus on the potential role of collisions of structures as they attempt to slide past each other during an earthquake. Interestingly\, the ground motion from collisions depends mostly on the size and shape of the structures and does not depend on the magnitude of stresses within the Earth and thus gives a very different interpretation of what causes the most damaging ground motions. When incorporated with standard frictional models\, the collision model explains various observations that are otherwise difficult to explain\, including why stress drops sometimes are not observed to be magnitude invariant\, why fault zones with more complexity have stronger ground motions\, and why high-frequency radiation patterns are more isotropic than can be explained by scattering.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:T. Daniel Seely is a Professor of Linguistics at Eastern Michigan University. \n\nJoin us in person in East Hall room 4448 or virtually on Zoom.\n\nTITLE\nOn the History and Current Form of Merge\n\nABSTRACT\nThis discussion explores the history\, form\, and function of the most fundamental operation of the narrow syntax\, Merge. The question we'll focus on is this: What 'should' Merge do\, what 'should' Merge not do\; and\, most importantly\, why? \n\nBy way of background\, we give a brief history of structure building devices\, from PS rules (graph-theoretic and linear-order-encoding) to successive stages in the development of Merge--from its introduction in Bare Phrase Structure (Chomsky 1994/95) to its formulation in Problems of Projection (Chomsky 2013\, 2015\, see also Epstein\, Kitahara\, Seely 2015\, Collins and Seely to appear)) and to its recent characterization (Chomsky 2018\, 2019\, 2020\, 2021)\, Epstein\, Kitahara\, Seely (2018\, 2020\, 2022). \n\nNext\, we trace the \"maximize minimal merge\" program (Epstein\, Kitahara\, and Seely 2018\, 2022): The idea is to maximize the effects of Merge while minimizing its form\, positing internal to the narrow syntax as little as possible beyond simplest Merge\, striving ultimately for the thesis “3rd Factor + Interfaces + Recursion = Language\,” as initially articulated in Chomsky 2007. \n\nWith this background\, our primary goal is to explore Chomsky's recent thinking on Merge\, from a series of lectures and papers\, and ultimately trace conclusions of a forthcoming paper “Merge” by N. Chomsky\, R. Berwick\, S. Fong\, M.A.C. Huybregts\, H. Kitahara\, A. McInnerney\, T.D. Seely\, Y. Sugimoto\, in R. Freidin (ed) Elements\, Cambridge. \n\nChomsky’s recent work suggests that what we thought was simplest Merge (unifying external and internal merge) is in fact inexplicit in crucial respects\, and a revision is proposed that reconceives Merge as an operation that applies to the workspace WS\, thereby allowing the monitoring of computational resources. Explored are the 3rd \nfactor (non-linguistic) principles that constrain Merge\, its empirical consequences\, challenges\, and prospects for future research.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquia Series: High-Resolution Multiphysics for Nuclear Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nNuclear reactors represent tightly-coupled physics interactions between thermal-hydraulics\, neutronics\, material performance\, structural mechanics\, chemistry\, and more. Multiphysics modeling is the practice of accounting for these physics interactions during design and analysis. Recent advancements in high performance computing now enable multiphysics simulations with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo neutron transport and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. This talk will begin with a high-level overview of the most important coupled physics interactions in fission reactors\, and then introduce the theory of multiphysics modeling as most commonly applied in nuclear engineering. Current research in Monte Carlo-based multiphysics applications will be summarized in terms of acceleration strategies\, stability\, field mapping\, and software development. Then\, multiphysics methods research at Argonne National Laboratory using high-resolution CFD and Monte Carlo tools will be presented through the lens of prismatic high temperature gas reactors. Finally\, student opportunities at Argonne National Laboratory for both undergraduate and graduate students will be introduced.\n\n \n\nBio:\nDr. April Novak is the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Fellow in the Computational Sciences Division of Argonne National Laboratory\, where she conducts research in multiphysics modeling and simulation\, computational thermal-hydraulics\, and multiscale methods. April is the lead developer of the Cardinal application\, an open-source software tool that couples the NekRS Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and OpenMC Monte Carlo codes to the MOOSE framework. As part of her PhD research\, April developed multiscale methods for pebble bed analysis within the coarse-mesh thermal-fluid Pronghorn MOOSE application. She now leads several projects in the high-resolution multiphysics space with applications to fast reactor core radial expansion and gas microreactors\, and supports a broad range of nuclear industry collaborations. She has a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley (2020) and a B.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign (2015).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series\, Fall 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series is among the most prestigious international platforms for the presentation of new work on Roman history and culture. The Jerome Lectures are presented at both the American Academy in Rome and the University of Michigan. Scheduled for Fall 2022\, in the forty-ninth year of the lecture series\, Amy Richlin\, Distinguished Research Professor of Classics at UCLA will be delivering four lectures on the theme of \"Dirty Words: The Selective Survival of Latin Erotica.\"\n\nAmy Richlin works on Roman society and culture\, especially women’s history\, Roman comedy and satire\, and the history of sexuality. Her most recent book\, Slave Theater in the Roman Republic: Plautus and Popular Comedy\, won the Goodwin Award from the Society for Classical Studies. Her Jerome Lectures spring from her career-long fascination with the simultaneous radical difference and deep continuities between ancient and modern sex/gender systems.\n\nAll lectures will take place in a hybrid format at 4:00 PM. In person: on the 2nd Floor of the Michigan League. Virtually: live-streamed via LSA ITS \n\n\n- Monday\, October 31st - How Pederasty Got Lost\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa103122.html\n\nSummary: after a brief history of how the history of ancient sexuality started to be written in the 1970s\, this lecture presents an overview of pederastic texts in classical Latin and the co-implication of Roman pederasty with slavery. This continues into “retrosexuality” as writers in the 100s CE produce poetry that is explicitly grounded in earlier poetry. Then three main questions: how did this discourse survive the transformation of Western Europe into Christendom? What does this discourse tell about the transformation of the ancient sex/gender system? Why is it important to us?\n\nFurther reading: Boswell\, John. 1980. Christianity\, Social Tolerance\, and Homosexuality. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. \n\n\n- Wednesday\, November 2nd - Sidonius Apollinaris in Visigothic Gaul: Love Among the Ruins\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110222.html\n\nSummary: this lecture focuses on a great transitional figure of the 400s CE. A super-rich aristocrat who lived in an enormous villa in southern Gaul\, Sidonius survived the Visigothic takeover and became bishop of Clermont. In his voluminous poems and letters he attests to his fear that traditional Latin literature will disappear\, producing an account in which pederastic love is visible as an erasure – although Sidonius does turn a queer eye on the Visigoth Theodoric.\n\nFurther reading: Kelly\, Gavin\, and Joop van Waarden\, eds. 2020. The Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press.\n\n\n- Friday\, November 4th - Jerome’s Captive Slave-Woman and the Latin Canon\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110422.html\n\nSummary: one of the main reasons classical Latin survived is that Church fathers like St. Jerome could not bear to abandon the curriculum they were trained in. But in the Middle Ages Jerome’s reading list meant different things to the monks that copied texts over and to those who set Church policy on sexual behavior. Now pederasty was a sin\, although the heaviest blame fell\, surprisingly\, on the youngest boys. Yet the 1100s saw the rise of several monkish poets who wrote pederastic poetry. After a late-medieval backlash\, the Italian Renaissance found teachers editing even the Carmina Priapea as a project with their students.\n\nFurther reading: Elliott\, Dyan. 2020. The Corrupter of Boys: Sodomy\, Scandal\, and the Medieval Clergy. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press.\n\nGaisser\, Julia Haig. 1993. Catullus and his Renaissance Readers. Oxford: Clarendon Press.\n\nKarras\, Ruth Mazo. 2006. Sexuality in Medieval Europe: Doing Unto Others. New York: Routledge.\n\n\n- Monday\, November 7th - Curriculum Reform and Expurgation in the 1700s and 1800s\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110722.html\n\nSummary: grammar schools in the 1600s\, following the tradition stretching back to Jerome\, taught mainly Greek and Latin\, including satire (often unexpurgated). An editor of the X-rated Greek pederastic poet Strato in 1764 claims that all students have access to Catullus\, Martial\, Petronius\, and the Priapea. Yet this aspect of education troubled the puritanical\, who not unreasonably asked why Christian schools should be teaching about sins and gods. A survey of schoolbooks and curricula shows that conflicting systems continued to coexist. Today we are more likely to teach Catullus and Petronius to undergraduates than the Victorians were\; should we teach them whole?\n\nFurther reading: Watson\, Foster. 1908. The English Grammar Schools to 1660: Their Curriculum and Practice. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | The Thief Who Stole My Heart: The Material Life of Chola Bronzes
DESCRIPTION:This talk commences by introducing the audience to a master sculptor working around the year 1000\, whose inspiration may well have been child-saint Sambandar’s opening hymn that hails Shiva as “the thief who stole my heart.” Dehejia then moves beyond the sensuous to ask questions of this material that have not been asked before\, treating the bronzes as material objects that interacted in meaningful ways with human activities\, and with socioeconomic and religious practices. Where did the Cholas acquire the copper required to cast the many temple bronzes that are solid and heavy pieces of metal? Why were the Cholas obsessed with island Sri Lanka? What were the circumstances that permitted the creation of so many temples and such large numbers of exquisite bronzes despite the constant warfare that the Chola monarchs undertook to retain and expand their empire? What was the source of the pearls and coral\, rubies and diamonds\, that were embedded in gold jewelry gifted to adorn every temple’s sacred bronzes? Why did the Cholas cover the walls of their temples walls with inscriptions – over 12\,000 in total – that cast intriguing light on society of the time?\n\nVidya Dehejia is Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian Art at Columbia University in New York\, and author of over 20 books on the history of Indian art\, in which she connects the visual and literary arts in meaningful ways. She has also served as Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Her latest study\, released by Princeton University Press is titled The Thief Who Stole my Heart: The Material Life of Sacred Bronzes from Chola India\, 855-1280. In 2012\, the President of India awarded her a Padma Bhushan for “Outstanding Contribution to Art & Education.”\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The 2022 Ethel V. Curry Distinguished Lecture in Musicology: Thinking Again about Masculinity and Music Theory with Dr. Fred Everett Maus
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Fred Everett Maus’ 1993 essay\, “Masculine Discourse in Music Theory\,” is still cited regularly\; as recently as 2020\, two new essays by other scholars gave it sustained attention. In this talk\, Dr. Maus returns to that essay\, partly to clarify what it tried to accomplish but mostly to ask: What might remain useful in that study after almost 30 years? And\, above all\, how might related issues be addressed differently in our present\, greatly changed professional and sociopolitical situations?\n\nDr. Fred Everett Maus teaches music at the University of Virginia. He has published on music and narrative\, gender and sexuality in discourse about music\, queer 1980s pop\, and other topics. Recent essays include “Listening and Possessing” (2018)\, “‘What if Music IS Sex?’: Suzanne Cusick and Collaboration” (2019)\, “LGBTQ+ Lives in Professional Music Theory” (2020)\, “Defensive Writing in Discourse about Music” (2020)\, “Queer Sexuality and Musical Narrative” (forthcoming)\, and “The B-52s\, Loss\, and Defiance” (forthcoming). The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness\, which he co-edited with Sheila Whiteley\, was published in February 2022.
