SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:CMENAS Fall Colloquium. Higher Ed between Debate and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:2022 CMENAS Fall Colloquium: Higher Education & Reformation across the MENA: A Geopolitical Exploration\n\n“Higher Ed between Debate and Innovation”\n\nRahmi Oruç & Önder Kucukural\, Ibn Haldun University (Turkey): *Adab in Dialogue: Developing Argumentative Virtues in a Divided World via the Munazara Engagement Model (MEM)*\n \nIn this talk\, we introduce the ADAB project. The project takes its name and draws from the Ādāb al-Baḥth wa-l Munāẓara. Serving among the instrumental disciplines an aspiring scholar must master in their journey to knowledge and virtue\, Munāẓara emerged as a synthesis of Aristotelian analytics and Muslim ethics at the end of the 13th century. ADAB aims to develop a new argumentative engagement model and implement it in contemporary university debates. Institutionalizing through tournaments and the attendant debate clubs\, university debates are one key component of modern higher education. However\, as we all witness in our contemporary societies\, deep disagreements have hijacked the public space to the extent that we hesitate whether public deliberation and argumentation can provide any remedy. Nevertheless\, considering the high levels of polarization that sometimes fuel violence\, the dismal state of public debating should not discourage us from rethinking virtuous interaction and prospects of deliberative democracy. We believe ADAB is a humble start. We first provide a brief history. Then we make a case for Munāẓara’s applicability to contemporary problems as its attention to virtues and their manifestation in argumentative behavior is key to handling the growing frustration with public space or the lack thereof.\n\nMohd Nishat Faisal\, Fauzia Jabeen\, Marios Katsioloudes\, Abu Dhabi University (UAE)\, American University of Cyprus (Cyprus)\, Qatar University (Qatar): *Entrepreneurial mindset and the role of universities as strategic drivers of entrepreneurship: Evidence from the United Arab Emirates* \n \nThe purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the factors that influence the mindset of youth in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in choosing entrepreneurship as their future employment. It also suggests the pathway to improve the role of the universities as strategic drivers in inducing an entrepreneurial mindset. An exhaustive literature review of extant research followed by an exploratory study was conducted. Furthermore\, to understand factors influencing the role of universities\, interpretive structural modeling methodology is applied to evolve a hierarchy-based relationship among the strategic factors. The results of empirical research suggest that young people in the UAE rank entrepreneurship as their first employment choice. However\, most of them have not attended any formal entrepreneurship-related courses in school or in college. The study also suggests that individual and environmental factors influence the entrepreneurial mindset of both males and females in the UAE. The structural model developed in the study indicates that to give an impetus to the entrepreneurial mindset\, the government must create a supporting environment with UAE universities playing the role of a catalyst. The results could provide insights for both entrepreneurship educators and policymakers and will boost their commitment to promote the entrepreneurial mindset within UAE society by enhancing and developing traits associated with entrepreneurial success. The results support recognition of the factors that induce educational programmes and economic incentives targeted at the development of sustainable entrepreneurial culture and ventures in the UAE.\n \nSpeaker Bios:\nRahmi Oruç is a lecturer at Comparative Literature\, Ibn Haldun University. He recently defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “What do we do with arguments?: Situating Munāẓara in contemporary argumentation scholarship.” He introduces Munāẓara as a contemporary argumentation theory that may complement and even serve as an alternative to existing theories. His interests include comparative literature\, rhetoric\, literary theory\, digital humanities\, and narratology. His overall research orientation is the reassessment of madrasa sciences for contemporary scholarship. Page\nMonday\, November 7\, 2022\n4:00 - 5:00 p.m. ET\nFree and open to the public\n\nIn-Person\, Robertson Auditorium\, Michigan Ross Campus\, Ross Building\, 701 Tappan\, Ann Arbor\n\nEvent Link: \nhttps://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/creating-wise-crowds-how-positive-culture-and-fair-process-can-prevent-madness/\n\nPositive Links:\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders.\n\nAbout the talk: \nEvidence demonstrates both the Wisdom of Crowds (Collective Intelligence) and the Madness of Crowds (Group Think) in collective forecasts. Forecasts underpin most decisions\; good decisions\, therefore\, require good forecasts. In this talk\, Scott Page discusses the phenomena of wise and mad crowds in the context of forecasts\, demonstrates the logic of how diversity can produce accurate collective forecasts (the wisdom of crowds)\, and the necessity of (1) a positive culture where people feel comfortable sharing ideas\, clarifying logic\, and facts and (2) a process that facilitates collective knowledge production for both good decisions and acceptance of those decisions. Scott concludes with a discussion of differing perspectives on using technology to enable anonymous participation.\n\nAbout Page:\nScott E. Page’s research focuses on the function of diversity in complex social systems\, the potential for collective intelligence\, and the design of institutions for meeting the challenges of a complex world.\n\nA recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford\, Scott was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011\, and in 2019\, he was awarded a Distinguished University Professorship from the University of Michigan\, the university’s highest academic honor. He is a member of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute.\n\nHe is the author of more than one hundred research papers in a variety of fields including: game theory\, economics\, political theory\, formal political science\, sociology\, psychology\, philosophy\, physics\, public health\, geography\, computer science\, and management. In 2021\, he helped to launch and now edits the Journal of Collective Intelligence.\n\nHis fifth book\, The Model Thinker\, was published by Basic Books in November 2018\, and has been an Amazon Best Seller in more than ten categories and is being translated into five languages. His previous books include\, the Axios award winning\, The Diversity Bonus\, published in September 2017 with Princeton University Press and the Mellon Foundation\, The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups\, Firms\, Schools\, and Societies (2008)\, and Complex Adaptive Social Systems (2009).\n\nScott has filmed two video series for The Great Courses and his online course Model Thinking has attracted over a million participants. A frequent public speaker\, Scott has presented to the CIA\, NASA\, Bloomberg\, Google\, Boeing\, the IMF\, Genentech\, Gilead\, and AT Kearney. Scott has also been a featured speaker at The New York Times New Work Summit\, Google Re:Work\, The World Economic Forum – Davos\, and The Aspen Ideas Festival. Scott has consulted with the Federal Reserve System\, the White House office of Personnel\, Yahoo! Ford\, DARPA\, Procter and Gamble\, BlackRock\, and AB InBev.\n\nA native of Yankee Springs Michigan\, Scott holds a BA in mathematics from The University of Michigan\, and MA from The University of Wisconsin\, and an MS and PhD in managerial economics and decision sciences from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. Scott lives in Ann Arbor\, MI\, with his wife\, University of Michigan political science professor Jenna Bednar and their dogs Oda and Hildy. Their two sons\, Orrie (20) and Cooper (18) attend college at MIT and the School of the Art Institute.\n\nHost:\nJulia Lee Cunningham\, Faculty Co-Director\, Center for Positive Organizations\; Associate Professor of Management and Organizations\n\nSeries Sponsors:\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker. Compass to Sentinel: The Automation of Self-tracking Technology
DESCRIPTION:This talk draws on ethnographic fieldwork to argue that a shift is underway in the logic of behavioral guidance informing the design and use of so-called self-tracking technology\, or apps\, and wearable devices that sense\, record\, and analyze users’ data. While first-wave self-tracking technologies were designed to serve as digital compasses that could provide attentive selves with information to help them navigate the choice-filled seas of modern life\, newer technologies are designed to serve as sentinels that can stand watch for distracted and overwhelmed selves\, providing just-in-time micronudges to keep them on track.\n\nCo-sponsored by Center for Ethics\, Society and Computing\, Communication and Media Studies\, American Culture\, Digital Studies Institute.\n\nBio: Natasha Dow Schüll is a cultural anthropologist and associate professor in the department of Media\, Culture\, and Communication at New York University. She is the author of Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas (2012)\, an ethnographic exploration of the relationship between technology design and the experience of addiction. Her current book project\, Keeping Track (forthcoming)\, concerns the rise of digital self-tracking technologies and the new modes of introspection and self-governance they engender. She has published numerous articles on the theme of digital media and subjectivity\, and her research has been featured in such national media venues as 60 Minutes\, The New York Times\, The Economist\, The Financial Times\, and The Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series\, Fall 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series is among the most prestigious international platforms for the presentation of new work on Roman history and culture. The Jerome Lectures are presented at both the American Academy in Rome and the University of Michigan. Scheduled for Fall 2022\, in the forty-ninth year of the lecture series\, Amy Richlin\, Distinguished Research Professor of Classics at UCLA will be delivering four lectures on the theme of \"Dirty Words: The Selective Survival of Latin Erotica.\"\n\nAmy Richlin works on Roman society and culture\, especially women’s history\, Roman comedy and satire\, and the history of sexuality. Her most recent book\, Slave Theater in the Roman Republic: Plautus and Popular Comedy\, won the Goodwin Award from the Society for Classical Studies. Her Jerome Lectures spring from her career-long fascination with the simultaneous radical difference and deep continuities between ancient and modern sex/gender systems.\n\nAll lectures will take place in a hybrid format at 4:00 PM. In person: on the 2nd Floor of the Michigan League. Virtually: live-streamed via LSA ITS \n\n\n- Monday\, October 31st - How Pederasty Got Lost\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa103122.html\n\nSummary: after a brief history of how the history of ancient sexuality started to be written in the 1970s\, this lecture presents an overview of pederastic texts in classical Latin and the co-implication of Roman pederasty with slavery. This continues into “retrosexuality” as writers in the 100s CE produce poetry that is explicitly grounded in earlier poetry. Then three main questions: how did this discourse survive the transformation of Western Europe into Christendom? What does this discourse tell about the transformation of the ancient sex/gender system? Why is it important to us?\n\nFurther reading: Boswell\, John. 1980. Christianity\, Social Tolerance\, and Homosexuality. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. \n\n\n- Wednesday\, November 2nd - Sidonius Apollinaris in Visigothic Gaul: Love Among the Ruins\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110222.html\n\nSummary: this lecture focuses on a great transitional figure of the 400s CE. A super-rich aristocrat who lived in an enormous villa in southern Gaul\, Sidonius survived the Visigothic takeover and became bishop of Clermont. In his voluminous poems and letters he attests to his fear that traditional Latin literature will disappear\, producing an account in which pederastic love is visible as an erasure – although Sidonius does turn a queer eye on the Visigoth Theodoric.\n\nFurther reading: Kelly\, Gavin\, and Joop van Waarden\, eds. 2020. The Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press.\n\n\n- Friday\, November 4th - Jerome’s Captive Slave-Woman and the Latin Canon\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110422.html\n\nSummary: one of the main reasons classical Latin survived is that Church fathers like St. Jerome could not bear to abandon the curriculum they were trained in. But in the Middle Ages Jerome’s reading list meant different things to the monks that copied texts over and to those who set Church policy on sexual behavior. Now pederasty was a sin\, although the heaviest blame fell\, surprisingly\, on the youngest boys. Yet the 1100s saw the rise of several monkish poets who wrote pederastic poetry. After a late-medieval backlash\, the Italian Renaissance found teachers editing even the Carmina Priapea as a project with their students.\n\nFurther reading: Elliott\, Dyan. 2020. The Corrupter of Boys: Sodomy\, Scandal\, and the Medieval Clergy. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press.\n\nGaisser\, Julia Haig. 1993. Catullus and his Renaissance Readers. Oxford: Clarendon Press.\n\nKarras\, Ruth Mazo. 2006. Sexuality in Medieval Europe: Doing Unto Others. New York: Routledge.\n\n\n- Monday\, November 7th - Curriculum Reform and Expurgation in the 1700s and 1800s\n\nLivestream: https://ummedia01.umnet.umich.edu/lsa/lsa110722.html\n\nSummary: grammar schools in the 1600s\, following the tradition stretching back to Jerome\, taught mainly Greek and Latin\, including satire (often unexpurgated). An editor of the X-rated Greek pederastic poet Strato in 1764 claims that all students have access to Catullus\, Martial\, Petronius\, and the Priapea. Yet this aspect of education troubled the puritanical\, who not unreasonably asked why Christian schools should be teaching about sins and gods. A survey of schoolbooks and curricula shows that conflicting systems continued to coexist. Today we are more likely to teach Catullus and Petronius to undergraduates than the Victorians were\; should we teach them whole?\n\nFurther reading: Watson\, Foster. 1908. The English Grammar Schools to 1660: Their Curriculum and Practice. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 813 Seminar: Karen K. Giuliano
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, I will present our program of empirically-based research on IV smart pump usability problems\, common user workarounds\, drug library compliance/adherence/ interoperability issues\, common infusion-related medication administration errors will be reviewed\, and issues related to flow rate accuracy. I will use several\, real life\, case study examples/hands-on experience\, to clearly illustrate these issues.\n\nTo be safe and effective\, a human factors systems approach should be used to minimize the known and potential risks of IV smart pumps while maximizing the full scope of their benefits. Frontline care providers\, primarily nurses\, working along with their engineering colleagues\, are the ideal team to inform and guide innovation in this very important area of patient safety.\n\nKaren Giuliano is currently Co-Director of the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation\, and a Professor (Joint)\, the Institute for Applied Life Sciences and the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing\, University of Massachusetts Amherst. With a clinical background in critical care and 25+ years of global experience in the development of new medical products\, Karen has a passion for improving healthcare through innovation. Her expertise includes human-centered design and clinical outcomes research.\n\nKaren actively contributes to many professional organizations\, and works with small\, medium and large companies on medical product development and innovation. Karen enjoys working with frontline caregivers to support research at the point-of-care. In addition\, her own interdisciplinary program of research is focused in two main areas: non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia and IV infusion safety using IV Smart Pumps. \n\nThe seminar series “Providing Better Healthcare through Systems Engineering” is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach.\n\nFor the Zoom link and password\, and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\,\nplease RSVP\, or contact genehkim@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Peter Gelderloos and StopCampGrayling on Strategies for Ecological Revolution from Below
DESCRIPTION:Global warming\, climate change\, the ecological crisis. Tipping points\, extinction events. Conservation\, green fascism. Carbon footprint\, carbon offsets\, carbon capture\, neocolonialism. How we talk about the disaster is strongly related to how we respond to it\, and how we understand it. Is it a countdown to an impending future event\, a danger we are beginning to see the early signs of\, or a catastrophe that has been ongoing for at least 500 years? The answer to these questions\, and the language we use to pose the questions\, can determine whether we consider a proposed response to the problem as compelling or completely absurd\, whether a delusional half-measure or an exaggerated non-sequitur. The fact that\, faced with the same problem\, people lack a common language and reach such polarized viewpoints\, has become a structural part of the problem itself.\n\nPeter Gelderloos\, author of The Solutions Are Already Here\, will discuss how centrist approaches like conservation and carbon capture\, and even approaches considered progressive like the Green New Deal\, are responses to the needs of the current political and economic system rather than responses to the actual crisis that is unfolding. Moreover\, there is strong evidence that our current system of government and capitalism is inherently and integrally ecocidal\, that under any political program it would lead to broadly similar results as regards the ability of our planet to support life. As a result\, standard approaches to dealing with the disaster will ignore or suppress the kinds of movements and solutions that are our greatest hope. This event will tie this analysis with exactly these kinds of movements\, groups that offer a strategic horizon for facing our intersecting and most pressing challenges.\n\nPeter will be joined by local activists from StopCampGrayling\, a new initiative campaigning against the proposal to grant 162\,000 acres of public lands\, water\, and forests to Michigan’s National Guard\, a proposal threatening to destroy precious habitats\, poison water sources\, and increase militarization\, all while expanding the army base at Grayling to twice the size of Chicago.

SUMMARY:Performance:Sons of the East
DESCRIPTION:Australian band Sons of the East is an under-the-radar success story\, racking up millions of streams and selling out shows across Europe and Australia without ever straying from their independent roots. And they built that impressive following through their incredible and energetic live shows\, paired with a serious handful of exceptional original songs. So far the band has racked up more than 160 million streams on Spotify\, 12 million streams on Apple Music and 40 million YouTube plays from around the world. The year 2022 has been a breakthrough for Sons of the East\, with international touring leading up to the release of the group’s debut album. Says Vinyl Garden: “What we like about this band is their Australian twist and contemporary take on the more traditional Folk music style ... But ultimately what really makes this band shine is their stage presence (they are a must see live).”\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.
