SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium - Individual differences in brain and behavior
DESCRIPTION:This will be somewhat of a non-traditional talk\, where I will highlight aspects of my education\, training\, and career that have shaped my current research interests and projects – thus offering a bit of a historical perspective. The overarching theme of my research is “individual differences in brain and behavior”\, and much of the research I will present centers around individual differences in reward learning and the underlying brain circuitry. I will discuss how these differences might inform our understanding of psychopathology. I will also present some new findings that demonstrate the importance of considering individual variability in rodent models. In addition\, you will hear about our recent translational efforts in attempt to study individual differences in reward learning in humans\; and some exciting new directions\, including an opportunity to study a new model organism.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - Hybrid: Leaf\, tree and stand responses to nutrient supplementation in Eucalyptus nitens
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology.\n\nAbstract\nMaximizing the growth and productivity of commercial plantations is critical for meeting global demands for wood and paper products\, without resorting to unsustainable harvesting of native forests or increasing the plantation estate at the expense of other primary production systems. Because Eualyptus plantations are often established on nutrient-poor soils in Australia\, optimizing fertilizer use is an important management tool for maximizing in these systems. To improve site-specific fertilizer regimes\, a more detailed mechanistic understanding of the productivity response to nutrient supplementation under varied abiotic conditions is needed. Here\, I present a conceptual framework explaining the interplay between nutrition\, leaf area dynamics\, physiological processes and growth\, based on the results of three large-scale field fertilizer experiments in E. nitens plantations in Tasmania\, Australia. I present several lines of evidence that large applications of nitrogen exacerbates water stress and hence reduces productivity in warm and dry conditions.\n\nImage: 180 degree view of a forest canopy \n\nThis seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page). Contact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for password at least two hours prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Anatomy of a Regional Civil War: Guangxi\, 1967-1968
DESCRIPTION:During the violent early years of China’s Cultural Revolution\, the province of Guangxi experienced by far the largest death toll of any comparable region. Why? One explanation posits a process of collective killings focused on rural households categorized as class enemies by the regime. This view draws parallels with genocidal intergroup violence in Bosnia\, Rwanda\, and similar settings. New evidence from classified investigations conducted in China in the 1980s reveals the extent to which the killings were part of a province-wide counter-insurgency campaign carried out by village militia. The unusually high death tolls generated by organized effort that resembled the massacres of communists and other leftists coordinated by Indonesia’s army in 1965.\n \n Andrew G. Walder is the Denise O’Leary and Kent Thiry Professor in the Department of Sociology at Stanford University\, where he is also a Senior Fellow in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Veterans Week: Vietnam and Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, with the withdrawal of U.S. and allied forces\, the Afghanistan capital Kabul fell. Anger and confusion reigns across America mixed with relief that the twenty-year war is over. Iraq\, a fragile democracy remains but the rationale for invasion remains in question. Almost fifty years before\, Saigon fell after the last American forces pulled out of Vietnam. How do Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans feel about their sacrifice and service today compared to how Vietnam Vets now feel about theirs? What\, in fact\, does winning a modern war look like? This panel will be one of the first in the nation to ask this urgently important question.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Research Talk: Jundi Liu
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, autonomous systems have greatly improved how people live and work. However\, realizing the full potential of these technologies is only possible if people establish appropriate trust in them. Therefore\, prospective systems are expected to sense and respond to users' trust changes and ideally adapt to trust-aware design considerations. I will present my recent work on developing trust-aware customized adaptive systems in vehicle automation using Interactive Reinforcement Learning. We first designed an online driving simulator study to collect human trust dynamics while interacting with vehicle automation. After analyzing trust evolution characteristics\, I modeled the trust as a dynamic system using the State Space (SS) model. Then\, I proposed an Interactive Reinforcement Learning algorithm to integrate the previously designed trust models into the Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) framework. As a result\, the optimal policies recovered by the proposed algorithm can capture the driver preferences of different driving styles from large-scale naturalistic driving data and trust dynamics while interacting with the autonomous systems. Our proposed framework has implications for the design of future human-aware high-fidelity autonomous systems. I will conclude the talk with an overview of how our current work moves toward this future.\n\nPresenter Bio:\n\nJundi Liu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan\, working with Prof. Xi Jessie Yang. He graduated from the University of Washington (UW) in September 2022 with a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering\, working with Prof. Linda Boyle and Prof. Ashis Banerjee on trust-aware customized vehicle automation. Jundi received his B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016 and his M.S. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from UW in 2018. Jundi's research interest is to improve human-autonomy interaction through understanding and modeling human trust and to develop trust-aware adaptive systems to support human users in complex decision-making tasks. His research aims to create a holistic framework that enables human-aware high-fidelity autonomous systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Quantum Networks and Distributed Quantum Computing with Photons and Atoms
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91655313495 with the passcode: CM-AMO\n\nEfficient quantum conversion interface between single photon qubits and local computing qubits is the key to realize large-scale quantum networks and distributed quantum computing. Lacking such interfaces\, the existing leading quantum computers platforms\, such as superconducting circuits\, trapped ions\, and neutral atom arrays\, are not ready to be connected to quantum networks. On the other side\, photonic systems have demonstrated power in solving intractable problems like Boson sampling\, but face challenges for practically scalable universal quantum computing because it is extremely difficult for a single photon to control another deterministically. The widely used scheme with linear optics\, making use of probabilistic measurement induced effective “nonlinearity”\, is practically not efficient for large scale implementation because it requires enormous amount of ancilla photons and computational time. In this talk\, we describe a hybrid approach to address this issue with a universal distributed quantum computing scheme based on photonic polarizations and efficient atomic-ensemble ground-state quantum memories (QMs). Single-qubit photonic gate operations can be implemented with linear optics. To introduce nonlinear interaction between two qubits\, we convert the photonic qubit states into atomic-ensemble-based QM states and implement two-qubit controlled-phase gate with Rydberg blockade effect. As the quantum circuit elements are spatially distributed and connected via optical modes\, this hybrid photon-atom scheme can be used to build a distributed quantum computer. While the current research in quantum computing and networks are nearly isolated and there is a lack of protocol for networking distributed multiple-qubit quantum computers\, our scheme provides a natural quantum network interface for cloud quantum computing with remote quantum computers. \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MEMS Lecture. A Custody Dispute between a Habashi Slave and her Jewish Owner\; Issues of Gender and Ethnic/Racial Identity in Medieval Egypt
DESCRIPTION:The chronicler of the late Mamluk period and early Ottoman occupation of Egypt\, Ibn Iyas\, reported a child custody dispute between an Ethiopian female slave (Ḥabashiyya) and her Jewish owner\, a senior official of the Mint\, that occurred in 928H/1522CE. This lecture will address the slave’s audacious appeal before the chief Maliki Qadi of Cairo for personal manumission on the basis of her own conversion to Islam\, and invalidation of any claim over her infant daughter by the Jewish father\, who sought to maintain his licit and communal rights as a parent and as a Jew. The case is considered in light of opinions by legal (Sharīʿa) scholars about the upbringing of children born to parents of differing religions. The lecture also places this dispute in the larger context of racial identity\, and controversies over preferences to ‘blackness’ in writings contemporary to the Mamluk period.\n\nCarl F. Petry: Is the Hamad ibn Khalifa Al Thani Professor of Middle East Studies emeritus\, Department of History\, Northwestern University. His research focuses on pre-modern Egypt\, with emphasis on political economy. He has published: The Civilian Elite of Cairo in the Later Middle Ages (Princeton\, 1982)\; Twilight of Majesty: the Reigns of the Mamluk Sultans al-Ashraf Qaytbay and Qansuh al-Ghawri in Egypt (U. Washington\, 1993)\; Protectors or Praetorians? The Last Mamluk Sultans and Egypt’s Waning as a Great Power (S.U.N.Y.\, 1994)\; The Criminal Underworld in a Medieval Islamic Society: Narratives from Cairo under the Mamluks (Middle East Documentation Center\, U. Chicago\, 2012)\; The Mamluk Sultanate—A History (Cambridge University Press\, 2022). He has edited and contributed to The Cambridge History of Egypt\, vol. 1: Islamic Egypt\, 640-1517 C.E. (Cambridge University Press\, 1998). Teaching interests range from gender relations in the Islamic Middle Ages to Revolutionary Egypt under Nasser and Sadat.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optimality of Matched-Pair Designs in Randomized Controlled Trials
DESCRIPTION:Yuehao Bai is an econometrician in the Department of Economics at the University of Michigan. His recent research concerns the design and analysis of experiments as well as inference under partial identification. His papers have been published in the American Economic Review\, Journal of the American Statistical Association\, Journal of Econometrics\, and Journal of Business and Economic Statistics.\n\nTitle: Optimality of Matched-Pair Designs in Randomized Controlled Trials \n\nAbstract: In randomized controlled trials (RCTs)\, treatment is often assigned by stratified randomization. I show that among all stratified randomization schemes which treat all units with probability one half\, a certain matched-pair design achieves the maximum statistical precision for estimating the average treatment effect (ATE). In an important special case\, the optimal design pairs units according to the baseline outcome. In a simulation study based on datasets from 10 RCTs\, this design lowers the standard error for the estimator of the ATE by 10% on average\, and by up to 34%\, relative to the original designs.
