SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Information Session Webinar- Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 10\, 2022\n9:30 - 10:30am (EST)\nRegistration is required\, https://tinyurl.com/422xdvdp\n\nPlease join us to learn about the University of Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. \n\nThe Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) offers graduate degrees that combine ideas and techniques for producing and analyzing data about humans and our society. Join us to launch your career in this exciting and rewarding field in which scientists interpret the world through data.\n\nMPSDS\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021\, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data\, but also including social media posts\, sensor data\, and administrative records\, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research\, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Philippe Chavrier\, Ph.D.\, Institut Curie
DESCRIPTION:Cancer cells use specialized protrusions termed invadopodia to localize matrix metalloproteinases for matrix degradation and invasion. The lecture will present evidence that invadopodia are self-assembling\, force-producing proteolytic cell-matrix contacts that promote matrix pore enlargement to facilitate tumor cell invasion. In addition\, unpublished work will be discussed that supports a reciprocal interplay between invadopodia and caveolae\, which are plasma membrane invaginations involved in mechanosensitivity\, signaling and plasma membrane receptor uptake. Finally\, the consequences of tumor cell starvation and mTOR repression on the invadopodia-\, MMP-mediated program of tumor cell invasion will be discussed.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nPhilippe Chavrier\, Ph.D.\nResearch Director\nCell Biology and Cancer Department\nInstitut Curie\n\nPhilippe Chavrier obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Lyon\, France on the transcriptional reactivation of the Epstein Barr virus. He then moved as a postdoc to the Differentiation Program of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg\, Germany where he cloned and characterized a family of *Drosophila **Krüppel*-related zinc-finger domain transcription factors in the mouse. He then joined the Cell Biology Program at EMBL and identified and studied several Rab family GTPases involved in the control of endocytosis. He was awarded a grant from French CNRS to start his own lab at the CNRS-INSERM Immunology Center in Marseille-Luminy\, France to work on the interplay between actin dynamics and endocytic membrane recycling in the context of cell migration and phagocytosis. Philippe Chavrier joined the Cell Biology & Cancer Department of Institut Curie/CNRS\, Paris\, France. His work is focusing on the mechanisms underlying the protease-dependent program tumor invasion program of breast cancer cells.\n\n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Presentation:ChE GRAD STUDENTS' CHOICE SEMINAR: “Designing catalysts and chemical processes for global sustainability”
DESCRIPTION:The ChE seminar series features guest speakers. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. \n\n\nABSTRACT:\nOur modern world relies upon chemical transformations that benefit the lives of billions. These transformations can be found across many sectors\, including transportation\, heating and cooling\, electricity\, food production\, and manufacturing\, among many others. To date\, fossil resources have provided the majority of the energy demanded by the global economy\, and thanks to human ingenuity over decades (and centuries) we have been able to develop large-scale chemical processes that can make use of the fossil resources to provide for many across the globe in a cost-effective manner. However\, there are many challenges to the current paradigm\, as (1) modern processes are generally not sustainable\, and (2) while they provide for billions\, there are billions of others who have minimal access to the modern energy system.\n\nThis talk will describe efforts envisioned for a future paradigm\, particularly on the development of new catalysts and new processes that can make use of renewable resources in the production\, storage\, and utilization of important molecular products. Examples include hydrogen (H2) production from water and CO2 conversion to carbon-based fuels and chemicals. A key focus will be on the fundamental design and development of catalyst systems that can execute desired chemical transformations with high activity\, selectivity\, and durability\, plus the integration of such catalysts into devices that can achieve high-performance\, paving the path ahead for new\, sustainable technologies.\n\nBIO:\nThomas Francisco Jaramillo is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University and of Photon Science at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He serves as Director of the SUNCAT Center for Interface Science and Catalysis\, a joint partnership between Stanford and SLAC. Prof. Jaramillo's research efforts are aimed at developing catalyst materials and new processes to improve sustainability in the energy and chemical sectors. A key emphasis is engineering catalyst materials at the nano- and atomic-scale to induce desired properties\, and then on designing and developing new technologies that employ them. Examples include solar- and wind-powered processes to convert water\, N2\, and CO2 into valuable molecular products such as hydrogen (H2)\, ammonia-based fertilizers\, and carbon-based products (e.g. fuels\, plastics) for use in transportation\, agriculture\, energy storage\, and in the chemical industry\, among others. The overarching theme is the development of cost-effective\, clean energy technologies that can benefit society and provide for economic growth in a sustainable manner.\n \nProf. Jaramillo has authored over 200 publications in the peer-reviewed literature in these areas\, and has earned a number of honors and awards for his efforts. Honors include the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis (2021) from the North American Catalysis Society\, the Resonate Award (2014) from the Resnick Institute\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists & Engineers (PECASE\, 2011)\, the U.S. Dept. of Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Program Research & Development Award (2011)\, the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award (2011)\, and the Mohr-Davidow Ventures (MDV) Innovator Award (2009). Prof. Jaramillo is on the annual list of Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate Analytics\, ranking in the top 1% by citations (2018-present).\n \nProfessor Jaramillo is from Carolina\, Puerto Rico\, earning a BS in chemical engineering at Stanford University and MS and PhD degrees in chemical engineering at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. He then pursued post-doctoral research as the Hans Christian Ørsted Postdoctoral Fellow at the Technical University of Denmark\, Department of Physics\, prior to joining the Stanford faculty.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Youth Mental Health Crisis: The Surge After The Surge
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14 and 75% by age 24? Or\, that 70% of youth in the juvenile justice system have a diagnosable mental health condition? How about the fact that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14 and the 3rd leading cause among those aged 15-24 in the U.S.?\n\nWhen you look at the numbers related to the pandemic for adolescents (aged 12-17):\n\n• 1 in 6 experienced a major depressive episode (MDE)\n• 3 million had serious thoughts of suicide\n• There was a 31% increase in mental health-related emergency department visits\n\nAny way you look at these numbers\, it's clear that we\, or more precisely our youth\, are in crisis. In the next installment of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies Mini Symposium Series we partner with the Eisenberg Family Depression Center for \"A Youth Mental Health Crisis: The Surge After the Surge\,\" the three esteemed panelists will address these sobering issues with presentations followed by a live Q&A.\n\n• Dr. Eva Feldman\, Director of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies\n• Dr. Sheila Marcus\, Professor of Psychiatry\n• Dr. Lia Gaggino\, Primary Care Pediatrician\n\nJoining us for the live Q&A will be Dr. Michelle Kees\, Faculty Lead\, Outreach and Education\, Eisenberg Family Depression Center.\n\nDon't forget to submit your questions when you register via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar Series: Control of Uncertainty or Control with Uncertainty? A New Control Design Paradigm for Autonomous Stochastic Systems
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Panagiotis Tsiotras\nDavid and Andrew Lewis Endowed Chair\nDaniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering\nInstitute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\n\nAbout the speaker: Uncertainty propagation and mitigation is at the core of all robotic and control systems. The standard approach so far has followed the spirit of control of a system “with uncertainties\,” as opposed to direct control “of uncertainties.” Recent advances from controllability of the covariance of the distribution of the state trajectories provide us with a new tool to control stochastic systems with strict performance guarantees. In this talk I will review some recent results on covariance control for stochastic systems subject to probabilistic (chance) constraints and will demonstrate the applicability of the approach on several control and motion planning problems under uncertainty. I will also discuss some current trends and potential directions for future work. \n \n \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Panagiotis Tsiotras is the David and Andrew Lewis Endowed Chair Professor at the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. At Georgia Tech\, he is also the Director of the Dynamics and Control Systems Laboratory and an Associate Director for the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (IRIM). His current research interests are in optimal and nonlinear control and their connections with AI and applications to aerial\, space and ground vehicle autonomy. He holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering\, Aerospace Engineering\, and Mathematics. He is currently the Chief Editor of the Frontiers of Robotics and AI in the area of Space Robotics and an Associate Editor for Dynamical Games and Applications. Previously\, he served at the Editorial Boards of the AIAA Journal of Guidance\, Control\, and Dynamics\, the IEEE Transactions of Automatic Control\, the IEEE Control Systems Magazine\, and the Journal of Dynamical and Control Systems. He is the recipient of the NSF Career Award\, the IEEE Excellence Award in Aerospace Control\, the Outstanding Aerospace Engineer award from Purdue\, and the Sigma Xi Research Excellence Award. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Departmental Seminar (899): Karen Hicklin
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Karen Hicklin\, Assistant Professor at University of Florida\n\nTitle: \"Assessing the impact of multicomponent interventions on colorectal cancer screening through simulation: What would it take to reach national screening targets in North Carolina?\"\n\nAbstract: Healthy People 2020 and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable established colorectal cancer (CRC) screening targets of 70.5% and 80%\, respectively. While evidence-based interventions (EBIs) have increased CRC screening\, the ability to achieve these targets at the population level remains uncertain. We simulated the impact of multicomponent interventions in North Carolina over 5 years to assess the potential for meeting national screening targets. Each intervention scenario is described as a core EBI with additional components indicated by the “+” symbol: patient navigation for screening colonoscopy (PN-for-Col+)\, mailed fecal immunochemical testing (MailedFIT+)\, MailedFIT+ targeted to Medicaid enrollees (MailedFIT+forMd)\, and provider assessment and feedback (PAF+). Each intervention was simulated with and without Medicaid expansion and at different levels of exposure (i.e.\, reach) for targeted populations. Outcomes included the percent up-to-date overall and by sociodemographic subgroups and number of CRC cases and deaths averted. Each multicomponent intervention was associated with increased CRC screening and averted both CRC cases and deaths\; three had the potential to reach screening targets. PN-for-Col+ achieved the 70.5% target with 97% reach after 1 year\, and the 80% target with 78% reach after 5 years. MailedFIT+ achieved the 70.5% target with 74% reach after 1 year and 5 years. In the Medicaid population\, assuming Medicaid expansion\, MailedFIT+forMd reached the 70.5% target after 5 years with 97% reach. This study clarifies the potential for states to reach national CRC screening targets using multicomponent EBIs\, but decision-makers also should consider tradeoffs in cost\, reach\, and ability to reduce disparities when selecting interventions.\n\nBio: Dr. Karen Hicklin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida. She received her PhD in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University\, her MS in Mathematics and Statistics from Georgetown University\, and her BS from Spelman College where she majored in mathematics. Before beginning her faculty appointment\, she completed Postdoctoral Training in the Department of Statistics and Operations and Department of Health Behavior in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research interest includes data-driven approaches to model decision making for healthcare quality improvement. She focuses on using optimization methods to provide solutions and policies for improving healthcare delivery and decreasing health disparities.\n\nThe Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend. There will be a reception to follow the seminars in the IOE commons from 4 -5 p.m

SUMMARY:Other:Extreme Light-Matter Interactions in Two Dimensions
DESCRIPTION:Spectroscopy is a tool for scientists to see quantum states of materials with light. When the field strength of the light approaches the internal Coulomb force of materials\, it can be used to control their electronic properties by inducing nonequilibrium quantum states. In this talk\, I will discuss the potential of such intense light-matter interactions in novel two-dimensional materials\, monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)\, with special emphasis on energy state control and extreme nonlinear optics. These experiments are enabled by the development of powerful mid-infrared light sources that can efficiently access internal resonance of electron-hole states\, known as excitons\, while avoiding sample damage that may result from direct photoabsorption. In the first part of the talk\, I will present energy state control of monolayer TMDs beyond the perturbative regime\, wherein a light-dressed replica and giant blue shift of excitonic states are characterized. In the second part of the talk\, I will demonstrate the unique application of artificially stacked TMDs to realize nonlinear optical processes of high-harmonic generation with enhanced efficiency. These findings demonstrate the exciting opportunities of harnessing quantum dynamics beyond perturbation in novel two-dimensional materials. \nYuki Kobayashi (Stanford PULSE Institute)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Predicting and quantifying cardiovascular growth\, remodeling\, and heterogeneity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCardiovascular soft tissues serve critical mechanical functions within the body\, but pathologic changes to these tissues alter their material properties causing disruption or reduction in function. This loss can be sudden\, such as the rupture of an aortic aneurysm\, or it can be gradual\, such as ventricular hypertrophy and heart failure. In this talk\, I will share strategies for predicting and quantifying the temporal and spatial characteristics of cardiovascular soft tissues. First\, I will discuss developing and employing a computational model to predict cardiac growth and remodeling. Second\, I will expand on experimental testing and analysis techniques for determining the heterogeneous properties of soft tissues. I will close by discussing future applications of these modeling and analyses techniques.\n\nBio:\nDr. Colleen Witzenburg is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also has an affiliate appointment in the Mechanical Engineering Department\, Department of Pediatrics\, and is a member of the Cardiovascular Research Center. Dr. Witzenburg earned BS in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. She then completed postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia. Her lab group\, the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Lab (cbl.engr.wisc.edu)\, has been awarded grants from the American Heart Association\, the Children’s Heart Foundation\, the National Science Foundation\, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation\, and the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Courtney Faye Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA's Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nCourtney Faye Taylor is the author of *Concentrate* (Graywolf Press\, 2022). It is the winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize selected by Rachel Eliza Griffiths and was a finalist for the National Poetry Series. \n\n*Concentrate* considers the life of Latasha Harlins\, a fifteen-year-old Black girl killed by a Korean-American grocer named Soon Ja Du in 1991. Her murder\, along with Rodney King’s beating\, served as a catalyst for the 1992 L.A. Uprising. Through poems\, visual collages\, dialogues and essays\, *Concentrate* reflects on the precariousness of Black girlhood and explores tension between Black and Korean-American communities\, specifically how white supremacy is the instigator of that tension. \n\nCourtney earned her B.A. from Agnes Scott College and her MFA from the University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers’ Program where she received the Hopwood Prize in Poetry. She is also the winner of the 92Y Discovery Prize and an Academy of American Poets Prize. The recipient of residencies and fellowships from Cave Canem and the Charlotte Street Foundation\, Courtney’s writing can be found in *Kenyon Review*\, *The Nation*\, *Ploughshares*\, *Best New Poets*\, *The New Republic* and elsewhere. \n\nAs a visual artist\, Courtney pairs photography and found materials with various poetic forms. Her visual poems can be found in *Poetry Magazine* and on display in exhibitions. For more\, visit courtneyfayetaylor.com.\n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Racial Microaggressions
DESCRIPTION:Racial microaggressions can be uniquely harmful to their targets\, and yet we often find ourselves skirting around this subset of microaggressions due to discomfort in openly discussing race\, racism\, and white supremacy. In this workshop we hope to foster an intellectually humble environment within which we can unpack racial microaggressions\, address common barriers to intervening when a racial microaggression is inflicted\, and provide tools for successfully intervening in the future.\nLearning objectives:\n\nIdentify elements of systemic racism and understand it’s compounding nature\, and connect how systemic racism creates a breeding ground for racial microaggressions\nIdentify racial microaggressions and intervene to disrupt their impact\nPractice emotional self-awareness by identifying emotional barriers to intervening to disrupt a racial microaggression\n\nThis workshop is designed for master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/ky7Rj.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Heart of the Cheetah: Entrepreneurship and Prosperity in Africa
DESCRIPTION:THE 2022 RALPH J. GERSON DISTINGUISHED LECTURER EXPLORES HOW REFORMING SMALL-BUSINESS PROCESSES IN AFRICA WILL BOOST THE CONTINENT’S ECONOMY\n\nMagatte Wade\, entrepreneur\, author and advocate for African dignity and prosperity through business growth\, will deliver the Ralph J. Gerson Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 10. The discussion will be broadcast via Zoom. (Register here to join the event).\n\nWade’s talk\, “The Heart of the Cheetah: Entrepreneurship and Prosperity in Africa\,” will focus on the power of business growth and importance of business-friendly infrastructure\, which she sees as critical to innovation and economic flourishing on the continent. As an entrepreneur from Senegal\, Wade has decried a lack of business infrastructure and subsequent unemployment as key reasons why many Africans risk their lives to migrate to other countries.\n\nThe Ralph J. Gerson Distinguished Lecture gathers the community around the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan to celebrate and promote ways businesses can positively impact social challenges. Its transformative speakers bring unique perspectives on economic development\, new considerations around innovative business models and informed evaluations of emerging markets.\n\nWade joins the series’ two past lecturers — Nobel Prize-winning Economist Sir Angus Deaton and Kevin Lobo\, Chairman and CEO of Stryker Corp. — in her work highlighting economic acceleration through business tools.\n\n“Magatte Wade is an outspoken advocate for the benefits that profitable businesses bring to an economy\,” said WDI President Paul Clyde. “She is a successful entrepreneur who understands the value and importance of business in the development of an economy. Considering WDI’s mission of equipping economic decision makers in emerging countries with the tools of commercial success\, it’s hard to think of a stronger advocate with a more relevant background than Wade.”\n\nWade was named one of Forbes’ “20 Youngest Power Women in Africa\,” a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum at Davos\, and a “Leading Woman in Wellness” award-winner with the Global Wellness Summit. She’s the Director of the Atlas Network’s Center for Africa Prosperity\, a member of the Board of Directors of Conscious Capitalism Inc.\, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Whole Planet Foundation with Whole Foods Market.\n\nAs a TED Global Africa Fellow\, her TED Talk\, titled “Why it’s so hard to start a business in Africa — and how to change it\,” has nearly 650\,000 views. In her talk\, Wade draws a clear and definitive thread between poverty reduction and business creation — asserting that the solution to poverty is making it easier for small businesses to start\, run and thrive. In it\, she describes how she came to this conclusion: “I have this attitude in life. Something is wrong\, find a way to fix it. That’s why I start the businesses that I start\, usually consumer brands\, that have embedded in them the very best of my African culture.”\n\nWade describes what it’s like for her to run these businesses in Senegal\, navigating the complicated and problematic laws and processes. “It’s like swimming through molasses\,” she said. Knowing the impact these stifling rules have on business growth\, Wade advocates for easing these restrictions and creating systems that promote private economic development. Not only does changing these laws make a major difference in business success\, she explained\, but shining a light on them can shift the outlook Africans have about their own capabilities and potential.\n\nHer new book\, “The Heart of the Cheetah\,” will be released soon.\n\nRegister to watch Wade’s speech live on Zoom at 7 p.m. Nov. 10.

SUMMARY:Performance:Rachael Yamagata | Opener: Sandy Bell
DESCRIPTION:Says the Associated Press: ”Along with the badassery\, Yamagata brings a world-weary passion to her singing. Her voice is a soul-baring\, sultry instrument that commands center stage at all times. She has that deliberate\, I’ll-sing-the-note-when-I’m-ready pacing that helped make Amy Winehouse great\, and before her Billie Holliday.” Rachael has released ten albums\, with each and every one of them containing surprises. Her songs are all over television soundtracks\, and she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Jason Mraz\, Rhett Miller\, Bright Eyes\, Ryan Adams\, Toots and the Maytals\, and Ray Lamontagne. Spending some years in Chicago’s competitive songwriting scene\, Rachael is now based in Woodstock\, New York.\n\n---\n\nOpening for Rachael is songwriter/musician Sandy Bell. Bell has moved through a vibrant and textured musical constellation\, playing most notably with the late but eternally brilliant Jeff Buckley as well as singing on the Bat for Lashes album “The Bride.” Bell’s debut solo album\, “When I Leave Ohio\,” was hailed by Stereo Embers Magazine as “…beautiful\, resonant work that’s stark and painful—Bell’s songs have crushing\, emotional exactitude that is nothing short of staggering.” Her new album is titled “Entelechy.” Music journalist Alex Green found “Entelechy” to be “filled with stirring melancholy and musical grace\,” an album that “explores the geometry of both musical form and sorrow\, while the cathartic transmutation of grief into promise will take you somewhere between the worlds of Harry Nilsson and Kate Bush.”
