SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Engaging heartland residents: Rebuilding pride\, ownership\, and a brighter future
DESCRIPTION:Leaders from North America and Europe will explore approaches to industrial heartland economic renewal in order to address one of the root causes of the polarizing politics undermining Western democracies and the transatlantic alliance.\n\nIndustrial regions—historically their countries’ economic powerhouses during the 20th century and the foundation for the middle class on both sides of the Atlantic—have undergone significant economic restructuring over the past several decades\, leading to fractured communities and the rise of populist politics. SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MORE (FACULTY) Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This in-person session helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/Qe9qr.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Asger Hobolth\, Professor\, Department of Mathematics\, Aarhus University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe analysis of genomic data makes it possible to characterize the demographic processes that shaped the genetic diversity of populations. State-of-the-art in data analyses of genomic data is increasingly simulation-based\, but disadvantages of simulation-based procedures include that they are highly computer intensive\, often depend on the choice of summary statistics\, and a rather indirect procedure for understanding key properties of both the data and the model. As an alternative to simulations\, I will outline an emerging mathematical framework for genetic diversity based on matrix-exponential distributions. The main idea is that the ancestral process of a genetic sample can be described using a generalization of the exponential distribution called a phase-type distribution. Phase-type distributions have been used with great success in the actuarial sciences and in queuing theory\, but the distribution is also well suited for the ancestral process. I will describe recent results of using phase-type distributions in population genetics\, and discuss the latest progress and future plans for the framework. \n\n\nAsger Hobolth is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Aarhus University.\n\nhttps://pure.au.dk/portal/en/persons/asger-hobolth(8d387f4e-86e9-4405-a50d-1e5a6efd97d8).html

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When Artists Approach the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series craft lectures are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in Angell Hall #3222). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nWhat does it mean to embrace the physical remnants of history? To devour\, enlarge\, erase\, and amend its material\, then engage it on the page\, in the gallery\, and on the mic? This interdisciplinary craft lecture examines the archive as a location of ancestry\, a platform for dialogue\, and a tool for approaching the space between past and imagined future. \n\nCourtney Faye Taylor is the author of *Concentrate* (Graywolf Press\, 2022). It is the winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize selected by Rachel Eliza Griffiths and was a finalist for the National Poetry Series. \n\n*Concentrate* considers the life of Latasha Harlins\, a fifteen-year-old Black girl killed by a Korean-American grocer named Soon Ja Du in 1991. Her murder\, along with Rodney King’s beating\, served as a catalyst for the 1992 L.A. Uprising. Through poems\, visual collages\, dialogues and essays\, *Concentrate* reflects on the precariousness of Black girlhood and explores tension between Black and Korean-American communities\, specifically how white supremacy is the instigator of that tension. \n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. A lactation room (Angell Hall #5209)\, reflection room (Haven Hall #1506)\, and gender-inclusive restroom (Angell Hall 5th floor) are available on site. ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email asbates@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor). There is limited metered street parking on State Street and South University Avenue. The Forest Avenue Public Parking Structure (650 South Forest Ave.\, Ann Arbor) is five blocks away\, and the parking rate is $1.20 per hour. All of these options include parking spots for individuals with disabilities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint Is Family In Three Acts
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, Michigan State University\, and the Flint Institute of Arts.\n“No matter how dark a situation may be\, a camera can extract the light and turn a negative into a positive. In creating Flint Is Family In Three Acts\, I see the role of photographs as empowering and enacting visible change: in Act I\, the photographs bear witness and reclaim history\; in Act II\, the photographs reveal a hidden narrative\; in Act III\, the photographs are a catalyst for obtaining resources.”\n—LaToya Ruby Frazier \nFlint Is Family In Three Acts is a multi-part exhibition by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier. For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition served as a catalyst to bring three disparate institutions together to deepen our understanding of individual and institutional agency in advocating for equity\, transparency and environmental justice in our respective communities\, while also highlighting the role of the artist as an agent for enacting positive social change.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Tracee Glab\, and Steven L. Bridges with the assistance of Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan\, Rachel Winter\, and Rachael Holstege.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond/ Resist/ Rethink 2022
DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to participate in a poster and video exhibition that responds to the prompt: The care\, sustainability\, and access to free and clean water is arguably one of the most urgent and challenging issues of our time “What can you do to spread awareness of water issues and conservation measures?”\nEligible students: submit your work using our online form by Friday\, August 19\, 2022 →\nEligibility\nMust be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate major in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design.Eligible students may submit one work (poster or video).Time-based work must be submitted as a YouTube/Vimeo link.Timeline\nThe deadline for submitting work is Friday\, August 19\, 2022\, 5pm\, EST. A selection committee composed of students\, faculty\, and Stamps Gallery staff will review submitted work in the weeks following the deadline.Students whose works are selected will be notified by September 2\, 2022. The exhibition will take place from September 15\, 2022 - January 14\, 2023.Why posters &amp\; videos? \nPosters can function as catalysts for change. For generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:An Introduction to South Korean Salvage Archaeology: An Early Silla Cemetery Site\, Chadang-ri
DESCRIPTION:Located in Yeongcheon\, the southeast region of the Korean peninsula\, the Chadang-ri site is an early Silla cemetery (ca. 450-500 CE). This project has been ongoing since May (2022) and conducted by the cultural resource management (CRM) firm\, Daehan Institute of Cultural Properties. This site is approximately 4\,606 square meters\, and around 40 tombs have been identified. The tombs of early Silla consist of many styles\, such as 1) wooden chamber tomb\, 2) wooden chamber tomb with a stone mound\, 3) stone-lined tomb\, and 4) stone chamber tomb. Those buried in these tombs are hypothesized to be high-status individuals based on the evidence of high-quality burial goods such as gold earrings and protection stones. With the high density of tombs and the various tomb styles\, this site has been incredibly useful in understanding early Silla tomb culture within the outskirts of the kingdom. Chadang-ri site is one of many salvage excavation projects conducted in South Korea. Therefore\, to understand South Korea’s archaeological data better\, it is necessary to understand the context in which the project was started and the goals of each stakeholder. This presentation will share the contents of the Chadang-ri site from excavations from May until August and explain the process of South Korean salvage archaeology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Trust and Cooperation Beyond the Network
DESCRIPTION:My premise is that understanding trust beyond a network is essential to enhancing creativity and achievement within the network. I build on three anchor results (anchor results are strong\, robust empirical results likely to be found in quality research): (1) Network brokers are more creative and successful than other people. (2) Returns to network brokerage are contingent on broker reputation in a target market – poor reputation means poor returns to brokerage. (3) Trust and reputation are facilitated and maintained in densely-connected\, closed networks. But brokers usually operate outside the network around a target audience\, so they operate beyond reputation governance within the network. Our wireless world has us each more aware of how we and our friends are different from people beyond our network. Much of what we see and hear\, we do not like. Intolerance and abuse of people beyond our network is the fundamental issue targeted here. I use well-established network theory to predict “trust reversal:” The conditions that encourage trust and cooperation within a network have a by-product\; they reverse to encourage suspicion and abuse beyond the network. Successful people are especially prone to the bias. Initial results are intriguingly supportive.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Emotion Regulation: Other People Matter | The 2022 Chris Peterson Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Talk Summary: Although emotion regulation has often been conceptualized as an intrapersonal process\, the last decade has seen emotion research begin to focus on the critical role that interpersonal processes play in the regulation of emotion. Relatedly\, close relationships researchers have long recognized the role that interactions with other people play in the regulation of emotion\, even if this work has not explicitly been called emotion regulation research or focused on the emotion regulation per se (e.g.\, social support) . In this talk I will present research from our lab that draws on both emotion theory and close relationship theory. In the first part of the talk I will review some of our recent work on how people turn to close others to help them regulate their own emotions. I will present data from several studies that show how relationship factors (e.g.\, intimacy) and skills of the regulator (e.g.\, accuracy in emotion perception) influence the effectiveness of emotion regulation. In the second part of the talk\, I will present our newest work that investigates how people attempt to regulate their a partner’s emotions without that partner’s request\, or many cases even knowledge of the regulation attempt. I will present findings from several studies examining the strategies relationship partners use that are aimed at making them feel more positively and more negatively\, and the implications the use of these strategies have on the relationship and for the target of that regulation. Discussion will highlight the utility of that drawing on both close relationships research and emotion research has for advancing our our understanding of emotion regulation and interpersonal processes.\n\nAbout the speaker: Shelly Gable received her Ph.D. in Social and Personality Psychology at the University of Rochester and began her career as an Assistant Professor at UCLA where she earned tenure and co-founded the Interdisciplinary Relationship Science Program before joining the faculty at University of California\, Santa Barbara\, where she is currently chair of the department. Dr. Gable’s research focuses on motivation\, emotion regulation\, close relationships and positive emotions. She is particularly interested in the social regulation of emotions\, positive processes in close relationships\, and resilience more broadly. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health\, the National Science Foundation\, and the Templeton Foundation. She is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science\, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology\, and the International Positive Psychology Association. Her awards include the Best Article Award from the International Association of Relationship Researchers (twice) \, the Early Career Award from the Close Relationships Group of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology\, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President George W. Bush\, and the Career Trajectory Award from the International Association of Relationship Researchers. She lives a chaotic and joyful life in Santa Barbara with her husband\, three children\, and two large dogs of questionable lineage.\n\n* Note: The 2022 Chris Peterson Memorial Lecture will be a hybrid talk held in 1324 East Hall (the McKeachie Auditorium) and via livestream. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Carlie Pietsch\, San Jose State University
DESCRIPTION:The shallow shelf sediments of the U.S. Gulf Coastal Plain record the geochemical\, sedimentological\, and paleontological record of multiple Cenozoic climatic events. The end-Cretaceous mass extinction (KPg) (66 Mya) and the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) (~55.9Mya) each perturbed the global carbon cycle and left evidence of their biological impacts in the fossil record of the shallow shelf biota. At the KPg\, a bolide impact led to a 30 year “nuclear winter” causing the extinction of primary producers disturbing the biological pump that connects surface ocean primary productivity to the deep sea. It took 1.8 My for carbon cycling to return to pre-extinction export levels and ~4 million years until diversity\, size\, and other disparate ecological traits were re-evolved in the open-ocean fauna. At the PETM\, just 10 million years later\, a 5 to 8°C hyperthermal warming event altered terrestrial weathering and resulted in migrations\, extinctions\, and originations in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Our understanding of the biologic impact of the KPg mass extinction and PETM are focused on deep-sea cores and terrestrial vertebrate records while high-resolution records of shallow shelf marine invertebrate fauna (mollusks\, echinoderms\, etc) remain understudied. \n\nWe use fossil deposits from the U.S. Gulf Coastal Plain that bracket the KPg and PETM events to compare the effects of carbon cycle perturbation on invertebrate species richness\, proportional extinction and origination\, ecological composition\, shell size\, growth rate\, and inferred metabolic energy requirements. Across the KPg boundary\, we see preliminary support for an increase in fossil assemblage energy\, the result of ecological escalation (increased proportion of actively-mobile species) and a simultaneous increase in shell size. We interpret this increase in metabolic energy as a signal of increased primary productivity in the water column leading to more food availability to support an active shelf ecosystem in the post-extinction ecosystem. The significantly larger body volume of post-KPg molluscs could be due to selection against small species observed at mass extinction events. The extinction trigger and mechanism for KPg mass extinction are not an analog for modern climate change but can still provide insight into how long it takes the Earth System to recover from a major carbon cycle disturbance.\n\nIn contrast\, across the boundary of the PETM hyperthermal event we observe little impact of the extreme warming event on shell size\, functional ecology\, or diversity of shallow marine mollusk communities. Limited extinction selectivity for mollusc shell size and contradictory trends in growth rates do not support a directional response of shelf faunas to this extreme warning event. The PETM severely underestimates projections for modern climate change\; our anthropogenic input of carbon is happening 10x faster than most models of PETM carbon cycle perturbation. Our results of limited impact on shelf ecology therefore only represents a best-case scenario for predicting how shallow shelf faunas might respond to present-day climate change.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Pilar Prieto is an ICREA Research Professor at the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Universitat Pompeu Fabra\, Barcelona\, Catalunya. Her research focuses on the communicative role of prosody and gesture in language\, as well as their significance in language development and second language learning. She serves as associate editor of the journals Language and Speech and Frontiers in Communication. She is currently coediting a special issue of Language and Cognition on Multimodal Prosody and organizing the 1st International Multimodal Communication Symposium MMSYM\, April 27-28 2023\, Barcelona.\n\nThis event is hybrid\, join us via Zoom or in East Hall 4448\n\nTITLE\nHow the prosody in our hands and body can help us enhance second language pronunciation learning\nPilar Prieto (ICREA-Universitat Pompeu Fabra)\n\nABSTRACT\nWhen we speak\, we frequently use rhythmic hand gestures which are coordinated with prosodically prominent parts of speech (e.g.\, beat gestures). As most of the research on the benefits of gesture in the second language classroom has focused on the effects of representational gestures (e.g.\, for the acquisition of vocabulary)\, little is known about the potential beneficial effects of beats and other embodied prosodic movements on the learning of L2 pronunciation. In this talk I will discuss the results of several experiments carried out in our research group that deal with how beat gestures and other embodied rhythmic and melodic movements facilitate the learning of second language pronunciation. Experiments 1 and 2 will assess the potential benefits of observing and performing beat gestures on L2 pronunciation learning by intermediate Catalan learners of English. Experiments 3 and 4 will analyze the benefits of performing hand-clapping on L2 pronunciation learning at initial stages of L2 acquisition of French by Catalan and Chinese native speakers. Experiments 5 and 6 will assess the effects of the use of melodic and rhythmic hand movements on the learning of both suprasegmental and segmental information by English and French language learners. Widening the scope of this investigation\, Experiment 7 will assess the boosting effects of an embodied music-based rhythmic and melodic training which does not involve speech in the foreign language for English pronunciation learning. Based on the positive findings from these experiments\, I will discuss the results of a recent study testing the idea that embodied narrative-based natural classroom interventions have the potential to be used as strong scaffolding mechanisms for speech production. I will finally suggest that a more active\, context-based multimodal approach to teaching pronunciation could be successfully applied to both language teaching and speech treatment contexts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquia Series: Status of US Fast Reactor Research and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAn overview of national energy policy and fast reactor research and development (R&D) efforts in the U.S. will be provided by Dr. Bo Feng who is the National Technical Director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Fast Reactor Program and the manager of the Reactor and Fuel Cycle Analysis Group from the Argonne National Laboratory. There is significant interest and investment in advanced reactor technologies from the U.S. private sector\, with dozens of reactor companies working on advanced nuclear projects for a wide array of capabilities. Specific to fast reactors\, about a dozen fast reactor companies formed a U.S. industry group in 2017\, the Fast Reactor Working Group\, which provides important feedback on R&D priorities to the Department of Energy (DOE)\, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI)\, and U.S. national laboratories. Recognizing the importance of advanced reactors to meeting the nation’s energy security and climate change goals\, the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) was initiated in fiscal year (FY) 2020 to develop Federal and U.S. nuclear industry partnerships in the construction and demonstration of domestic advanced nuclear reactor designs that are safe and affordable to build and operate. To help implement this program\, the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) issued a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in May 2020 for the most promising domestic advanced reactor designs across the technology maturity spectrum\, and subsequently selected ten projects that can be developed over the next two decades. Four of these projects support the development and future demonstration of fast reactor concepts. In addition to providing an overview of the U.S. fast reactor industry\, Dr. Feng will discuss DOE programs including the Versatile Test Reactor\, fast reactor metallic fuel qualification\, the Fast Reactor Program's R&D in technology development\, computational methods\, fast reactor databases\, and advanced material development.\n\nBio:\nDr. Bo Feng manages the Reactor and Fuel Cycle Analysis group within the Nuclear Science and Engineering Division and serves as the National Technical Director for DOE-NE’s Fast Reactor R&D Program\, a role that oversees a multi-laboratory R&D portfolio that includes fast reactor technology development and testing\, methods validation and database development\, and advanced material qualification activities. Throughout his career\, his research has focused primarily on reactor physics analysis\, advanced reactor core design\, radiation transport\, and fuel cycle systems modeling. Dr. Feng has received several laboratory and national level awards for his research including Secretary of Energy’s Honor Award (2020)\, Argonne Director’s Award (2016)\, DOE’s Fuel Cycle R&D Excellence Award (2014)\, and ANS Thermal Hydraulic Division’s Best Paper Award (2009). Dr. Feng earned his S.B.\, S.M.\, and Ph.D. in Nuclear Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during his time there from 2003 - 2011.
