SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Brown Bag: Age prediction based on functional brain connectivity in 8-to-26-month-olds and its relation with brain structure and behavior
DESCRIPTION:Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) measured with fMRI has been used to characterize functional brain maturation in typically and atypically developing children and adults. However\, its reliability and utility for predicting development in infants and toddlers is less well understood. In Study 1\, we use fMRI data from the Baby Connectome Project (BCP) study to measure the reliability and uniqueness of rsFC in infants and toddlers and predict age in this sample (8-to-26 months old\; n = 170 sessions). We observed medium reliability for within-session infant rsFC in our sample\, and found that individual infant and toddler’s connectomes were sufficiently distinct for successful functional connectome fingerprinting. Next\, we trained and tested support vector regression models to predict age-at-scan with rsFC. Models successfully predicted novel infants’ age within ± 3.6 months error and a prediction R2 = .51. To characterize the anatomy of predictive networks\, we grouped connections into 11 infant-specific resting-state functional networks defined in a data-driven manner. We found that connections between regions of the same network—i.e. within-network connections—predicted age significantly better than between-network connections. In Study 2\, we applied the BCP-trained age prediction model from Study 1 to rsFC data from an independent sample of similar age range collected in India (INDIA\; 8-to-26 months old\; n = 107 sessions). We first assessed performance of this age-prediction model and found significant correlation between predicted and true age in the INDIA sample (Spearman ρ = .38\, p < 1/500). Next\, we asked if age-prediction errors (i.e.\, true age – age predicted from rsFC) were meaningful. That is\, were model errors associated with developmentally relevant measures of brain structure and behavior? Specifically\, we investigated relationship between age-prediction error and centiles from normative brain structure charts (Bethlehem\, Seidlitz\, et al\, 2022) as well as parental reports of infant behavior measured with the culturally appropriate Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). Our hypothesis was that underestimations in age based on functional brain architecture (i.e.\, positive errors from the rsFC model) may be associated with other developmental-delay-like patterns such as lower centile in the brain structure charts or lower ASQ scores. Supporting our hypothesis\, we found underestimated age predictions correspond to lower gray matter volume centiles (r = -.53 for cortical and r = -.56 ps < .001\, for subcortical grey matter) across infants and toddlers. There was no significant correlation between the rsFC-based age prediction errors and white matter or ventricle volume centiles from the normative charts in this age range. In the behavioral domain\, we found that underestimated age predictions may be associated with lower ASQ Problem Solving subscale (r = -.24\, p = .044\, N.S. after Bonferroni correction for the 5 tested subscales)\, which is in the hypothesized direction. Looking ahead\, these findings can help characterize changes in functional brain organization in infancy and toddlerhood\, inform work predicting developmental outcome measures in this age range\, and bridge functional and structural brain measures of neurodevelopment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:CMENAS Fall Colloquium. Higher Ed between Nationalism and Globalization
DESCRIPTION:2022 CMENAS Fall Colloquium: Higher Education & Reformation across the MENA: A Geopolitical Exploration\n\n“Higher Ed between Nationalism and Globalization”\n\n\nNatalie Koch\, Heidelberg University (Germany): *Nationalism and the geopolitics of higher education in the Arabian Peninsula*\n \nState-sponsored education is one of the most important channels for people to develop a sense of national attachment. Scholars stress the role of primary and secondary school\, but they give less attention to how nationalism is produced in institutions of higher education. In part\, this is because there has been a surge in efforts to internationalize higher education across the world. Yet at the same time that universities strive to become more international\, the same efforts reinforce national ideals of superiority and excellence on the world stage. Often designed to “domesticate” elite education from abroad in the name of promoting the nation\, these projects are supported by political leaders who see higher education as a key vector in advancing geopolitical visions. Considering several examples of this dynamic from the Arabian Peninsula\, this talk examines the interplay between nationalism and globalization in the geopolitics of contemporary higher education.\n\nAlex Shams\, University of Chicago (USA): *If Not For the Revolution: Gender\, Politics\, and Social Change in Iranian Higher Education since 1979*\n \nSince Iran’s 1979 Revolution\, women’s access to higher education has increased dramatically. In contrast to predictions that the Islamization of Iranian politics would lead to the disappearance of women from the public sphere\, today women far outnumber men at universities across the country\, and they play an active role in all parts of Iranian society. In this presentation\, I explore the complex evolution of gender politics in Iran during and since the revolution\, focusing on how the 1979 uprising\, the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War that followed\, and the decades of \"normalization\" since have reshaped Iranian society and women’s roles in it. I focus on how the implementation of a system of modernized religious governance under the Islamic Republic reorganized debates around gender relations and women’s access to education\, drawing on an ethnographic perspective to stress the importance of lived experience in scholarly research in the contemporary Middle East.\n\n \nSpeaker Bio:\nNatalie Koch is a professor of human geography at Heidelberg University. She is a political geographer who works on geopolitics\, authoritarianism\, and state power in hydrocarbon-rich countries\, primarily in the Arabian Peninsula. She is the editor of the new book\, *Spatializing Authoritarianism* (Syracuse University Press 2022)\, and her second monograph\, *Arid Empire: The Entangled Fates of Arizona and Arabia* (Verso 2023)\, examines the role of the University of Arizona in U.S. empire-building domestically and overseas – focusing on how the arid lands “expertise” essential to establishing settler control of the desert Southwest was built through ties with the Arabian Peninsula since the 1800s. Extending her research on the politics of U.S. higher education abroad\, her next project will focus on the wider history of U.S. science diplomacy in the Gulf region.\n\nAlex Shams is a PhD student of sociocultural anthropology at the University of Chicago. His research explores the politics of sacred space and religious governance in the Middle East. He was based for the last three years in Tehran\, from where he conducted fieldwork research in Iran and Iraq. He is an editor-in-chief of Ajam Media Collective (ajammc.com)\, an online journal dedicated to culture\, society\, and politics in Iran\, Central Asia\, and the broader region. He previously worked as a journalist based in Bethlehem\, Palestine.\n\nRegister to the virtual event: https://myumi.ch/DJV94\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact waterbuk@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Psychology Brown Bag: The Long-Term Effects of Income for At-Risk Infants: Evidence from Supplemental Security Income
DESCRIPTION:Previous research suggests that early life health and resources have long-term implications for a child's health and human capital outcomes. This paper examines whether a generous cash intervention early in life can ``undo'' some of the long-term disadvantage of a low health endowment at birth. To conduct this analysis\, we take advantage of new linkages between several large-scale administrative datasets to examine the short-\, medium-\, and long-term effects of providing low-income families with low birthweight infants support through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. We examine a birthweight cutoff used to determine SSI eligibility at 1200 grams\, and find that families of infants born just below this eligibility cutoff experience a large increase in cash benefits totaling about 17% of family income in the first two years of the infant's life. These cash benefits persist at lower amounts throughout childhood for infants whose birthweight falls right below the cutoff. Eligible infants also experience a small but statistically significant increase in Medicaid enrollment during childhood. We examine whether this support affects health care use and mortality in infancy\, educational performance in childhood\, and adult human capital\, earnings\, public assistance use\, and mortality using data for all infants born in California to low-income families between 1993 and 2019 whose birthweight puts them near the cutoff. Despite the comprehensive nature of this early life intervention\, we detect no improvements in any of these outcomes\, nor do we find improvements among the siblings of these infants who may have also benefited from the increase in family resources. These null effects persist across several subgroups and alternative model specifications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: Loneliness Transitions Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Around the World
DESCRIPTION:The PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this fall\, Mondays from 12 to 12:50 p.m.\nRachel Margolis of the University of Western Ontario presents: Loneliness Transitions among Middle-Aged and Older Adults around the World\n\nLoneliness among older adults globally is an important social problem. Existing cross-sectional estimates of older adult loneliness lay between 20 and 30% with variation over age and country. To tackle the issue of older adult loneliness\, we must move beyond cross sectional estimates of population levels of loneliness to: 1) examine to what extent older adult loneliness is a chronic issue or whether it is common to transition in and out of loneliness\; 2) take a life course perspective to examine how common life course changes in family\, co-residence\, work\, and health affect transitions in and out of loneliness\; and 3) examine how patterns and predictors of older age loneliness vary around the world. This paper charts loneliness trajectories for 18 countries and finds remarkable consistency in the important predictors of changes in loneliness in older age around the world. This highlights the grave importance of family and household connections\, and to a lesser extent\, work and health\, in affecting loneliness.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantitative Biology Seminar | A Topological Mechanism for Emergent Coherent Oscillations in the Circadian Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Stable collective dynamics are often observed in complex biochemical networks\, such as in emergent oscillations. How these robust dynamics arise remains unclear\, given the large reaction space and stochasticity demonstrated by underlying components. We propose a topological model that demonstrates emergent oscillations at the network boundary\, effectively reducing the system dynamics to a lower-dimensional space. Inspired by topological band theory\, we introduce a predictor of oscillation coherence from the analysis of spectral gaps. Using this to model KaiC\, which regulates the circadian rhythm in cyanobacteria\, we compare the coherence of oscillations produced to that in other KaiC models. We find that localization of currents on the system edge in the topological model supports a regime with simultaneously decreased cost and increased precision. This model also saturates a global thermodynamic bound. We conclude with a discussion of the model’s relevance to experimental data and propose testable predictions. Our work highlights a new paradigm for robust dynamics in complex biological networks and the robustness of biological function despite pervasive stochasticity.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | New Ways to Detect Gravitational Waves and Dark Matter
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational waves have enabled a new way of observing the Universe\; however\, so far they have only been detected in a narrow range of frequencies. Dark matter makes up most of the matter in the Universe\, and yet we still do not know what it is. In this talk\, I will discuss two promising avenues for detecting gravitational waves and dark matter with upcoming missions and experiments. First\, I'll discuss how we can use upcoming photometric surveys to detect gravitational waves by looking for relative stellar position changes induced by gravitational waves at Earth. These surveys will be sensitive to gravitational waves in a new frequency regime that will be difficult to measure in any other way. Then\, I'll discuss how we can use future space-based atom interferometers to probe general dark matter particle models through decoherence and phase effects induced by dark matter scattering. These experiments will be uniquely sensitive to light dark matter models (mx < 10 keV) that are inaccessible to other direct detection methods.\n\nPapers I’ll discuss: https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.02218\, https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.07962\, https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.13546\n

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:How to Navigate Small Talk As an International Student
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, many people participate in what is called \"\"small talk\"\"\, where you make conversation with strangers or acquaintances about non-controversial topics\, such as the weather\, sports\, or popular television shows. “Small talk” is one of the ways in American culture to chat about harmless topics in order to establish a connection and start to build a friendship. For example\, while waiting for an interview\, in line at a M-Den\, or in an elevator on campus\, don’t be startledif a stranger says something to you like\, “Did you watch the Football Game last night? What a game!” They might also make a joke about the long line you’re both in\, or comment on the current situation. If you are interested in learning more about \"\"\"\"small talk\"\"\"\"\, now it’s your chance to sign up for this workshop on how to navigate small talk as an international student. In this workshop\, we will educate you on what is small talk and you will also have the chance to practice small talk with peers!\n\n\nThis event's information is shown in Handshake as well as on the Happening @ Michigan calendar so that it will be seen by a larger number of U-M Students. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Civilian casualties and U.S. counterterrorism operations: Media-driven policy changes
DESCRIPTION:Eric Schmitt and Dave Philipps will join Associate Professor of Practice Javed Ali in a conversation about their reporting\, how it evolved\, and the impact it has had on changing U.S. policy with respect to civilian casualties that now extends outside the realm of just counterterrorism operations.\n\n*From the speakers' bios:*\n\nEric Schmitt is a senior writer covering terrorism and national security for *The New York Times*. Since 2007\, he has reported on terrorism issues\, with assignments to Pakistan\, Afghanistan\, North Africa\, Southeast Asia among others. He is the co-author\, with the *Times’s* Thom Shanker\, of *Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America’s Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda*\, published in 2011. He was first appointed as a Pentagon correspondent for *The Times* in May 1990. Mr. Schmitt served this position until February 1996\, and then again from Sept. 11\, 2001\, until 2006\, covering issues of national security. Between 1996 and 2001\, he worked as a domestic correspondent covering\, among other subjects\, Congress and immigration.\n\nMr. Schmitt has shared three Pulitzer Prizes. In 1999\, he was part of a team of *New York Times* reporters awarded the Pulitzer for coverage of the transfer of sensitive military technology to China. In 2009\, he was a part of a team of *New York Times* reporters awarded the Pulitzer for coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan. And in 2017\, he was part of a Pulitzer team that examined how Russian President Vladimir Putin projects power openly and covertly. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.\n\nDave Philipps is an investigative journalist and national military correspondent for *The New York Times*. His work has won nearly all of the major awards recognizing excellence in journalism\, including The Livingston Award for young journalists\, The Polk Award for investigative reporting\, and The Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. He got his start in journalism working for his home-town paper\, *The Colorado Springs Gazette*\, where his work gravitated towards revealing the unseen toll of repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan on soldiers are nearby Fort Carson. In writing about the military\, he has always sought to focus on the rank and file\, far from Washington\, who are directly impacted by national policies. He lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and two sons.

SUMMARY:Other:Divergent Roles of Dicer’s Helicase Domain in Antiviral Defense
DESCRIPTION:Viruses were once thought to be the sole source of long double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) in animal cells\, but the Bass laboratory identified numerous long dsRNAs that are genomically encoded and expressed in animals\, including humans. dsRNA-binding proteins enable cells to distinguish the “good” cellular dsRNA from the “bad” viral dsRNA\, but how they do this is not completely understood. Our current studies are focused on how a conserved helicase domain distinguishes “self” versus “non-self” dsRNA\, and how this function has diverged in vertebrates and invertebrates. We used ancestral sequence reconstruction to infer amino acid sequences of the helicase domain of ancestral Dicers\, enabling comparisons of its enzymatic activity with that of modern-day Dicer enzymes.\nBrenda Bass
