Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\r\n\r\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country\u2019s independence resulting in Russia\u2019s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine\u2019s east. \r\n\r\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\r\n\r\n\u201c\u2014 our love\u2019s gone missing, I explain to a friend\/ it vanished in one of the wars\/ we waged in our kitchen\/ \u2014 change the word \u2018war\u2019 to \u2018crisis,\u2019 he suggests\/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.\u201d\r\n\r\nLike in Yakimchuk\u2019s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. maturation in typically and atypically developing children and adults. However, its reliability and utility for predicting development in infants and toddlers is less well understood. In Study 1, we use fMRI data from the Baby Connectome Project (BCP) study to measure the reliability and uniqueness of rsFC in infants and toddlers and predict age in this sample (8-to-26 months old; n = 170 sessions). We observed medium reliability for within-session infant rsFC in our sample, and found that individual infant and toddler\u2019s connectomes were sufficiently distinct for successful functional connectome fingerprinting. Next, we trained and tested support vector regression models to predict age-at-scan with rsFC. Models successfully predicted novel infants\u2019 age within \u00b1 3.6 months error and a prediction R2 = .51. To characterize the anatomy of predictive networks, we grouped connections into 11 infant-specific resting-state functional networks defined in a data-driven manner. We found that connections between regions of the same network\u2014i.e. within-network connections\u2014predicted age significantly better than between-network connections. In Study 2, we applied the BCP-trained age prediction model from Study 1 to rsFC data from an independent sample of similar age range collected in India (INDIA; 8-to-26 months old; n = 107 sessions). We first assessed performance of this age-prediction model and found significant correlation between predicted and true age in the INDIA sample (Spearman \u03c1 = .38, p < 1\/500). Next, we asked if age-prediction errors (i.e., true age \u2013 age predicted from rsFC) were meaningful. That is, were model errors associated with developmentally relevant measures of brain structure and behavior? Specifically, we investigated relationship between age-prediction error and centiles from normative brain structure charts (Bethlehem, Seidlitz, et al, 2022) as well as parental reports of infant behavior measured with the culturally appropriate Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). Our hypothesis was that underestimations in age based on functional brain architecture (i.e., positive errors from the rsFC model) may be associated with other developmental-delay-like patterns such as lower centile in the brain structure charts or lower ASQ scores. Supporting our hypothesis, we found underestimated age predictions correspond to lower gray matter volume centiles (r = -.53 for cortical and r = -.56 ps < .001, for subcortical grey matter) across infants and toddlers. There was no significant correlation between the rsFC-based age prediction errors and white matter or ventricle volume centiles from the normative charts in this age range. In the behavioral domain, we found that underestimated age predictions may be associated with lower ASQ Problem Solving subscale (r = -.24, p = .044, N.S. after Bonferroni correction for the 5 tested subscales), which is in the hypothesized direction. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. Scholars stress the role of primary and secondary school, but they give less attention to how nationalism is produced in institutions of higher education. In part, this is because there has been a surge in efforts to internationalize higher education across the world. Yet at the same time that universities strive to become more international, the same efforts reinforce national ideals of superiority and excellence on the world stage. Often designed to \u201cdomesticate\u201d elite education from abroad in the name of promoting the nation, these projects are supported by political leaders who see higher education as a key vector in advancing geopolitical visions. Considering several examples of this dynamic from the Arabian Peninsula, this talk examines the interplay between nationalism and globalization in the geopolitics of contemporary higher education.\r\n\r\nAlex Shams, University of Chicago (USA): *If Not For the Revolution: Gender, Politics, and Social Change in Iranian Higher Education since 1979*\r\n \r\nSince Iran\u2019s 1979 Revolution, women\u2019s access to higher education has increased dramatically. In contrast to predictions that the Islamization of Iranian politics would lead to the disappearance of women from the public sphere, today women far outnumber men at universities across the country, and they play an active role in all parts of Iranian society. In this presentation, I explore the complex evolution of gender politics in Iran during and since the revolution, focusing on how the 1979 uprising, the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War that followed, and the decades of \"normalization\" since have reshaped Iranian society and women\u2019s roles in it. I focus on how the implementation of a system of modernized religious governance under the Islamic Republic reorganized debates around gender relations and women\u2019s access to education, drawing on an ethnographic perspective to stress the importance of lived experience in scholarly research in the contemporary Middle East.\r\n\r\n \r\nSpeaker Bio:\r\nNatalie Koch is a professor of human geography at Heidelberg University. She is a political geographer who works on geopolitics, authoritarianism, and state power in hydrocarbon-rich countries, primarily in the Arabian Peninsula. She is the editor of the new book, *Spatializing Authoritarianism* (Syracuse University Press 2022), and her second monograph, *Arid Empire: The Entangled Fates of Arizona and Arabia* (Verso 2023), examines the role of the University of Arizona in U.S. empire-building domestically and overseas \u2013 focusing on how the arid lands \u201cexpertise\u201d essential to establishing settler control of the desert Southwest was built through ties with the Arabian Peninsula since the 1800s. Extending her research on the politics of U.S. higher education abroad, her next project will focus on the wider history of U.S. science diplomacy in the Gulf region.\r\n\r\nAlex Shams is a PhD student of sociocultural anthropology at the University of Chicago. His research explores the politics of sacred space and religious governance in the Middle East. He was based for the last three years in Tehran, from where he conducted fieldwork research in Iran and Iraq. This paper examines whether a generous cash intervention early in life can ``undo'' some of the long-term disadvantage of a low health endowment at birth. To conduct this analysis, we take advantage of new linkages between several large-scale administrative datasets to examine the short-, medium-, and long-term effects of providing low-income families with low birthweight infants support through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. We examine a birthweight cutoff used to determine SSI eligibility at 1200 grams, and find that families of infants born just below this eligibility cutoff experience a large increase in cash benefits totaling about 17% of family income in the first two years of the infant's life. These cash benefits persist at lower amounts throughout childhood for infants whose birthweight falls right below the cutoff. Eligible infants also experience a small but statistically significant increase in Medicaid enrollment during childhood. We examine whether this support affects health care use and mortality in infancy, educational performance in childhood, and adult human capital, earnings, public assistance use, and mortality using data for all infants born in California to low-income families between 1993 and 2019 whose birthweight puts them near the cutoff. Despite the comprehensive nature of this early life intervention, we detect no improvements in any of these outcomes, nor do we find improvements among the siblings of these infants who may have also benefited from the increase in family resources. To tackle the issue of older adult loneliness, we must move beyond cross sectional estimates of population levels of loneliness to: 1) examine to what extent older adult loneliness is a chronic issue or whether it is common to transition in and out of loneliness; 2) take a life course perspective to examine how common life course changes in family, co-residence, work, and health affect transitions in and out of loneliness; and 3) examine how patterns and predictors of older age loneliness vary around the world. This paper charts loneliness trajectories for 18 countries and finds remarkable consistency in the important predictors of changes in loneliness in older age around the world. Inspired by topological band theory, we introduce a predictor of oscillation coherence from the analysis of spectral gaps. Using this to model KaiC, which regulates the circadian rhythm in cyanobacteria, we compare the coherence of oscillations produced to that in other KaiC models. We find that localization of currents on the system edge in the topological model supports a regime with simultaneously decreased cost and increased precision. This model also saturates a global thermodynamic bound. We conclude with a discussion of the model\u2019s relevance to experimental data and propose testable predictions. terrorism and national security for *The New York Times*. Since 2007, he has reported on terrorism issues, with assignments to Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Africa, Southeast Asia among others. He is the co-author, with the *Times\u2019s* Thom Shanker, of *Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America\u2019s Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda*, published in 2011. He was first appointed as a Pentagon correspondent for *The Times* in May 1990. Mr. Schmitt served this position until February 1996, and then again from Sept. 11, 2001, until 2006, covering issues of national security. Between 1996 and 2001, he worked as a domestic correspondent covering, among other subjects, Congress and immigration.\r\n\r\nMr. Schmitt has shared three Pulitzer Prizes. In 1999, he was part of a team of *New York Times* reporters awarded the Pulitzer for coverage of the transfer of sensitive military technology to China. In 2009, he was a part of a team of *New York Times* reporters awarded the Pulitzer for coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan. And in 2017, he was part of a Pulitzer team that examined how Russian President Vladimir Putin projects power openly and covertly. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.\r\n\r\nDave Philipps is an investigative journalist and national military correspondent for *The New York Times*. His work has won nearly all of the major awards recognizing excellence in journalism, including The Livingston Award for young journalists, The Polk Award for investigative reporting, and The Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. He got his start in journalism working for his home-town paper, *The Colorado Springs Gazette*, where his work gravitated towards revealing the unseen toll of repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan on soldiers are nearby Fort Carson.
