SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. \n\nThe exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\n\"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian\, East European & Eurasian Studies\, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.\n\nRelated Events:\n\nOpening Reception with comments by the curators\n4:00-6:00 pm ET\, Thursday\, September 15th\, 2022\nLane Hall\n\nArtists’ Roundtable (Hybrid)\n3:30-5:00pm ET\, Friday\, September 16th\, 2022\nWeiser Hall\, 1010\n\n*U-M classes may schedule visits outside of regular gallery hours by emailing LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:La Pelea/The Fight
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch/Student Evaluation Seminar - Hybrid: Keep it cool: exploring the diversification and adaptation of cold-tolerant floras
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. \n\nAbstract\nSince the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum\, the Earth has substantially cooled\, exposing flowering plants to new ecological opportunities that they can adapt to. Cold-tolerant angiosperms possess fascinating adaptations and trait innovations that enable them to survive under extreme climates. Montane angiosperms\, a special subset of cold-tolerant plants\, are well-known for their independent instances of rapid radiation. During this talk\, I will discuss my proposed dissertation research\, a global analysis of the correlation of montane distribution and speciation rates across major orders of flowering plants including a phylogenetic simulation comparing the macroevolutionary effects of differing turnover rates. Also\, with available transcriptome data\, I will examine the effect of whole genome duplications and gene duplications on the cold adaptations of alpine-arctic lineages in Caryophyllaceae.\n\nThis seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Chinese Lives of “Internet Finance”: From Technological Innovations to Ponzi Schemes
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Rao will trace how China’s “internet finance” industry\, represented by thousands of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending platforms\, developed from government-supported “financial innovations” to criminalized Ponzi schemes that ruined the life’s savings of millions. He will unravel this economic process through the stories of ordinary investors and borrowers drawn from 20 months of ethnographic study\, and offer an anthropological angle to understand the happening of a financial\, social\, and moral crisis.\n \n Yichen Rao is a postdoctoral researcher at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. As an anthropologist\, he studies the rapid development of contemporary China through the challenges digital technologies have imposed on human society. Dr. Rao has written ethnographies about China’s controversial internet addiction treatment camps\, internet finance platforms\, and the 996 overwork issues in the IT industry. He published in journals like \"Economic Anthropology\" and \"History of Psychology.\" His paper \"Dreaming like a Market\" on China's P2P lending industry was awarded the Schneider Prize Honorable Mention by the American Anthropological Association.\n\nZoom registration link: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VdCMd2jtQG6CHbxsI4xC8g\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Afterlives of Revolution: Populist Authoritarianism in Contemporary Nicaragua
DESCRIPTION:Luciana Chamorro Elizondo is a WCED Postdoctoral Fellow for the 2021-23 academic years. She is a political anthropologist who specializes in Central America and writes on revolution and its afterlives\, populist politics\, authoritarianism\, affect and aesthetics. Her larger conceptual interests are in political theology\, debt\, inheritance and generational difference\, political violence\, and feminist and queer imaginaries of the future.\n \nAs a WCED Fellow\, Luciana will continue to develop her book manuscript\, \"Afterlives of Revolution: Authoritarian Populism and Political Passions in Post-Revolutionary Nicaragua\"\, incorporating field research conducted in Nicaragua after the 2018 April uprisings\, a pivotal turning point after which the Ortega regime left behind the pursuit of hegemony and instead turned to the use of force and the establishment of a police state to sustain itself in power. She will also advance a series of related projects\, including a collaborative and comparative study tentatively titled “Authoritarian Thresholds” which uses ethnographic methods to consider under what conditions democratically elected regimes tip toward the use of exceptional force to remain in power.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at: http://myumi.ch/G1J55\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics (I-REP)
DESCRIPTION:Racial and ethnic identities play a key role in shaping behaviors\, attitudes\, institutions\, and social structures. As such\, scholars across disciplines have been devoted to investigating how race and ethnicity feature in every aspect of social and political life. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity\, and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race\, ethnicity\, and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students)\, build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group\n\nRacial conflict is a fixture of American politics and society. Issues of race and racial identity have shaped our criminal justice system\, generated social movements like Black Lives Matter\, and have been integral to the development of policies from immigration to housing and education. Outside of formal institutions and organizations\, race also animates our interpersonal relationships and social interactions. While the summer of 2021 marked the most recent “racial reckoning” in America\, it was not the first instance of social unrest in America generated by racial conflict\, and it certainly will not be the last. As America continues to wrestle with race\, I-REP seeks to support interdisciplinary research that analyzes racial inequality and racial conflict in political and social institutions as well as in interpersonal behavior. Such research has been instrumental to multiple disciplines across the social sciences\, including Political Science\, Social Psychology\, Sociology\, Psychology\, and Public Policy\, for decades. And while race\, racial identity\, and racial conflict can (and often are) studied in their own right\, research on almost any topic will benefit from an analysis that accounts for the impact of race across disciplinary boundaries.\n\nAt a time when politicians and political pundits are calling for the erasure of race from educational curricula\, it is imperative that academia continue to create spaces for research on race to be discussed\, evaluated\, critiqued and improved. Therefore\, I-REP strives to encourage scholarly conversations and collaborations among researchers who seek to better understand the consequential role of race and ethnicity in social and political life.

DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to serve alongside people of every race\, gender\, creed\, religion\, place of origin? How does military service take people from different backgrounds and create an effective unit? Unknown to many\, the United States Military is the most diverse employer in the US. It has constantly led the way in expanding its meaning of servicemember and pushed racial\, gender and sexual orientation boundaries decades before the civilian workplace.\n\nMilitary Service is\, in itself\, a distinct identity and one that veterans and active military members must weigh against their own multiple self and society selected ones.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Researach Talk: Daniel Otero-Leon
DESCRIPTION:Preventing chronic diseases is an essential aspect of medical care. Physicians monitor patients' risk factors and prescribe necessary medication to aim toward better health outcomes\, which means that all patients achieve their health potential while accounting for socially and demographic diverse patient populations. Monitoring too frequently may be unnecessary and costly\; however\, monitoring the patient infrequently means the patient may forgo needed treatment and experience adverse events related to the disease. To accomplish the optimal monitoring policy\, we develop models that: (1) Estimate the patient disease progression and (2) Define policies to prevent chronic diseases using sequential decision-making models. We estimate these stochastic models based on longitudinal observational data from electronic health records for a large cohort of patients seen in the national U.S. Veterans Affairs health system. As a result\, these models facilitate clinical interventions for cardiovascular diseases\, as they help identify high-risk patients. Also\, healthcare providers can now rely on additional tools to decide how to manage chronic diseases accurately across demographic subgroups. I will end the talk by discussing how I will build upon this body of work to address healthcare opportunities for improvement.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nDaniel F. Otero-Leon is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan and is co-advised by Dr. Brian Denton and Dr. Mariel Lavieri of IOE. His research interests are generally in operations research and\, more specifically\, in stochastic models and stochastic dynamic programming with applications to service systems\, including health systems and revenue management. His dissertation research is in the area of data-driven models for improving decision-making in the context of cardiovascular disease\, with the help of clinical collaborators at the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. His work seeks to develop new frameworks that aim for health equity by considering patients' health disparities in disease prevention policies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Flat Bands in Geometrically Frustrated Lattices
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91655313495 with the passcode: CM-AMO\n\nEmergent phases often appear when the electronic kinetic energy is small compared to the Coulomb interactions. One approach to seek material systems as hosts of such emergent phases is to realize localization of electronic wavefunctions due to the geometric frustration inherent in the crystal structure\, resulting in flat electronic bands. Recently\, such efforts have found a wide range of exotic phases in the two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice\, including magnetic order\, time-reversal symmetry breaking charge density wave (CDW)\, nematicity\, and superconductivity. In this talk\, I will present our recent efforts in experimentally exploring bulk materials hosting flat bands induced from the geometric frustration of the lattice. In particular\, I will present three examples of topological flat bands including a magnetic kagome system\, a pyrochlore system\, and a switchable bipartite lattice that forms within a 2D van der Waals magnet. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Africa Workshop: Africa’s Copperbelt Agenda for its Critical Minerals
DESCRIPTION:In December 2018\, cobalt was declared strategic minerals by the Democratic Republic of Congo and\nincreased the mineral royalties for mining it. In this declaration\, the Congolese government was\nhighlighting the significance of cobalt to the global supply of the high tech and green economy. The\nunique concentration of global cobalt reserves in the region covering the Democratic Republic of\nCongo\, and Zambia’s Copperbelt (Burgess 2010) is increasingly seen as a risk for supply and ethical\nsourcing for those industries reliant on the mineral. It is this\, plus the heightened trade competition\nbetween the United States of America and China whose technology industries dominate that is\nlending a geopolitical slant to cobalt. David Haglund (1986) writing over three decades ago\, in an\narticle on what he said was the new geopolitics of minerals\, argued that in the future it was political\ndynamics\, such as the assertion of economic independence in formerly colonised countries that was\nlikely to shape the strategic significance of minerals. Concerted efforts by the African Union\, outlined\nin their Africa Mining Vision\, is attempting not only to ensure the collection of more rents by African\ncountries for their minerals\, but crucially to shift them away from being merely extractive locales and\nfor them to play a key role in the continents own industrialisation plans. Thus\, the continents minerals\nare being seen as strategic to the continents own future developments\, in particular their minerals\nbeneficiation agenda that would like to see a manufacturing base emerge from their extractive\nindustries. However\, countries like DR Congo and Zambia who plan for the emergence of a regional\nbattery economy\, have to not only contend with protracted economic crisis and widening societal\ninequalities\, but also navigate a realignment in global politics\, that sees increased competition\nbetween the USA and China\, and conflict in Europe. This paper\, outlines the emergence of Africa’s\nCopperbelt agenda for its critical minerals within the context of a global green transition and shifting\ngeopolitics. Drawing from secondary sources and discussion with policy makers\, it highlights what\nare seen as the possibilities\, but also the pitfalls it faces in realising it.\n\nBio:\nDr Patience Mususa is Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute\, Uppsala. Her research covers\nissues of urban climate justice\, mining\, and urbanisation in southern central Africa. She is co-editor\ntogether with Stephen Marr of an upcoming collection on ‘DIY Urbanism in African Cities’ with\nBloomsbury publishing. Patience is also author of the monograph ‘There Used to Be Order: Life on\nthe Copperbelt after the privatisation of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines” with University of\nMichigan Press.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Faith and Feminism: Changing Roles of Women in American Judaism and Malaysian Islam
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to think about faith and feminism together? Is there a place for feminism in Abrahamic\, patriarchal religions? Conversely\, is there space for faith within often secular feminist movements? Does being part of a majoritarian group (Muslims in Malaysia) versus being part of a minoritarian group (Jews in the United States) shape or hinder reformist efforts in any way? historian Karla Goldman and political sociologist Saleena Saleem address these questions as they discuss the changing roles of women in American Judaism and Malaysian Islam throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.\n\nJoin the Frankel Center for this hybrid lecture with Saleena Saleem in conversation with Professor Karla Goldman and moderated by Professor Adi Saleem Bharat. This event is co-sponsored with Asian Languages and Cultures.\n\nThis is a hybrid taking place in 2022 South Thayer Building.\n\nZoom Registration: https://myumi.ch/29GXm\n\n*Saleena Saleem* is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Liverpool. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Title: Timescales in Natural and Artificial Intelligence\n\nAbstract: My lab studies how people integrate information over time\, as they seek to understand and learn from their environment. Temporal integration is ubiquitous\, because our world unfolds over time: hearing a fragment of sound\, we perceive it as part of a mockingbird’s melody\; reading one word\, we understand it as part of a meaningful sentence. The first part of this talk will review empirical findings and computational models describing how regions of the cerebral cortex integrate new input with context from many seconds earlier\; we will also examine how and when cortical regions \"forget\" prior context. The second part of the talk will explore how learning processes are affected by the processing timescales of our brains\, and why certain kinds of information tend to linger in our minds.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*There will be light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Other:Mastering Hierarchical and Non-Equilibrium Materials for Climate and Energy Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is reshaping how we harvest\, store\, and consume energy globally. To achieve net zero emissions by 2050\, we must develop low-cost and energy-efficient materials and mechanisms for carbon capture\, hydrogen storage\, and sustainable catalysis. In the first part of my talk\, I will describe my efforts to develop new hierarchical materials for carbon capture by utilizing framework lability. Synthetic strategies\, such as linker deletion and migration\, are used to tailor the complex pore environments of metal-organic frameworks for applications in gas storage\, separation\, and catalysis. In the second part of my talk\, I will describe my design of an active adsorption mechanism that provides a potential solution for effective decarbonization. Over the past century\, adsorption has been investigated extensively only in equilibrium systems\, with a focus on physisorption and chemisorption. I will present the first fundamentally new mode of adsorption—mechanisorption—since the observation of physisorption and chemisorption in the 1930s\, which results from non-equilibrium pumping to form mechanical bonds between adsorbents and adsorbates. Analogous to the mechanism in living organisms to control the active transport of ions across membranes\, adsorbates are transported from one well-defined compartment—the bulk—to another well-defined compartment—the interface—thereby creating a vast chemical potential gradient commensurate with storing energy in a metastable state. Mechanisorption extends\, in a fundamental manner\, the scope and potential of adsorption phenomena and offers a transformative approach to control chemistry at surfaces and interfaces. Lastly\, I will summarize the progress and provide an outlook for my next steps and future research vision in driving continuous adsorption of carbon dioxide from low-concertation regions\, the air\, to highly concentrated surfaces through this new active adsorption mechanism. \n \n \nLiang Feng (Northwestern University)

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:On Words & Onward Event Launch
DESCRIPTION:Throughout this event series\, our panelists and special guests aim to answer the following questions: Why does creative writing matter so deeply to so many people today? Who are the authors who have made and are making a lasting impression on the literary world? What do we stand to learn from these writers? Join University of Michigan Press series editors Jay Parini (Writers on Writing)\, Derek Pollard (Poets on Poetry)\, and Georgia Popoff (Under Discussion) as they talk with authors about why these series continue to be such catalysts in the classroom and writing workshops\, in community and literary centers\, among critics and scholars\, and on bookshelves of writers everywhere.\n\nIn this kickoff event\, Jay Parini\, Derek Pollard\, and Georgia Popoff wax poetic on why the books in these series have sparked some of the most engaged and engaging conversations about creative writing people have had for the past 25 years\, as well as on how they’re working to build an even broader platform for writers to say what truly needs to be said. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

From the jungles of Peru to the volcanoes of Hawaii\, from the beaches of Costa Rica to the streets of Brooklyn\, from the backseat of a 16-passenger van to backstage at Carnegie Hall\, the acclaimed singer/songwriter has spent much of his life crisscrossing the globe on a perpetual search for meaning\, purpose\, and understanding. It’s a quest that’s guided him both personally and professionally over the years\, one that’s come to define not only his music\, but his very sense of self. \n\nAnd yet\, listening to Ryan’s ambitious new multi-part album\, Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air\, there is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting still\, a recognition that perhaps all those spiritual treasures he’s been chasing for so long were closer than he thought.\n\n“My whole adult life has been this journey of trying to figure out where home is\,” Ryan reflects. “I think I’ve finally found it.”\n\nRolling out across four distinct EPs\, Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air marks Ryan’s first studio release since putting down permanent roots in Burlington\, Vermont\, where he recently purchased a house after more than two decades of living on the road.
