DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\n204 South State Street\n\nAbout the exhibit:\nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n\nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. DESCRIPTION:We've been following the development of Chinese auto industry since the early 2000s\, and this period seems to be the most challenging for companies doing business in China because of the uncertainty in the geopolitical relationship between the China and the West. Automotive companies like all business wants as much certainty in how local and national governments will treat foreign investment in their country\, but today there is probably less certainty than at any time in the past 20 years.\nTo better understand how automotive companies are managing this uncertainty\, this year’s conference will focus on auto companies that are currently working in China\, both domestic and foreign\, as well as experts on China that can provide an informed perspective on what they see happening now and in the near future. We will also discuss China’s energy sector support for the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) program\, and the quality\, reliability\, and appeal of vehicles\, including Chinese manufacturer export strategies.\n\nSome of the questions we will address will include: Are the Chinese non-joint venture brands becoming more successful than the joint ventures? How far along are the Chinese in developing and selling electric vehicles? How is the government changing its auto policies to support NEVs? What new NEV companies are selling in the Chinese market? How has the pandemic affected manufacturers and suppliers? How is the energy sector supporting NEVs in charging stations and power plants? How successful will Chinese OEMs be in exporting their vehicles globally?

Before joining Michigan\, he was an Assistant Professor and Sanford Bolton Faculty Scholar in the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University. Dr. Li’s research interests lie in the development of new statistical methods for complex biomedical data\, including multi-way tensor array data\, multi-view data\, and compositional data\, with applications to omics studies.\n\nSpeaker Website: https://sph.umich.edu/faculty-profiles/gen-li.html \n\nAbstract: The presence-absence (P/A) based analysis has gained popularity in microbiome research due to its robustness against measurement errors and sensitivity to rare taxa. In this work\, we develop a new logic regression framework to associate binary P/A data with clinical outcomes. The method can effectively leverage the tree structure among taxa to adaptively select important features at different taxonomic levels. The proposed method outperforms existing methods in synthetic examples and provides new insightful findings in an oral microbiome study

DESCRIPTION:Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance honoring the transgender people whose lives have been taken due to acts of anti-trans violence in the past year. On November 17\, Spectrum will host a TDOR event in partnership with our partner LGBT centers on UM Dearborn and UM Flint campuses. In advance of this\, we are folding 381 origami lotus flowers to commemorate those we lost and keep their memory present with us at the event. We invite you to drop by the Spectrum Center during open hours to fold flowers and take part in creating this memorial with us\, as an act of community.  There is a dedicated origami folding table with paper and foldinginstructions in the Spectrum Center on the 3rd floor of the Michigan Union.

DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n*La Pelea/The Fight* is a 46-foot panoramic oil-on-canvas. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

For five years\, Frazier researched and collaborated with two poets\, activists\, mothers and residents of Flint\, Michigan\, Shea Cobb and Amber Hasan\, as they endured one of the most devastating ecological crises in U.S. history. Resulting in a monumental oeuvre of photographs\, video\, and texts Frazier developed Flint Is Family In Three Acts (2016-2021) to advocate for access to clean and safe drinking water for all regardless of race\, religion and economic status. The series records stories of surviving and thriving\, especially within racialized and marginalized neighborhoods in Flint\, to ensure that they remained visible in national debates concerning environmental justice. Drawing inspiration from the urgency in Frazier’s work\, which also sheds light on building equitable and inclusive futures\, Stamps Gallery\, part of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design at the University of Michigan\, initiated a partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University to bring this important exhibition together for the first time in Michigan. As co-presenters of this landmark exhibition\, our goal is to offer a creative pedagogical platform that reaches broader audiences across Michigan and beyond - Flint is Family: Act I (2016-2017) will take place at the Flint Institute of Arts\, Act II (2017-2019) at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum\, and Act III (2019) at Stamps Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Water is the lifeblood of civilizations\, the center of cities\, the foundation of creation stories and the connective tissue of culture. Water is a life force\, without it humanity will cease to exist. Fresh water is necessary for the survival of all living organisms on Earth. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nContext\nStamps Gallery is an incubator and lab for contemporary artists and designers to explore ideas and projects that catalyze positive social change. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? We launched Respond/ Resist/ Rethink in the fall 2020 to kick off the fall semester with student work paired with the work of leading artists exhibiting at the Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Sofia grew up in Venezuela and witnessed firsthand the consequences of protesting an authoritative government without the possibility of legal recourse. During her time as an LSA international student (‘22\, Political Science and Cognitive Science)\, she interned at a human rights agency and realized that defending people’s rights of expression was her calling. Would she pursue a degree in law like her parents\, or go about her passion in another way? Sofia is still undecided on that\, but she’s thrilled to be starting her post-grad life in Philadelphia back at Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression where she interned a little over a year ago. She’s excited to talk with LSA students about discovering their WHY\, and about the value of building supportive relationships with friends and family that help keep one’s sense of intuition and patience intact. Join us! \n \n\nAbout Sofia:\n\nSofia Lopez graduated with high honors in Political Science from LSA in 2022. She also majored in Cognitive Science and completed a minor in French and Francophone studies. She is a part of Pi Sigma Alpha\, the National Political Science Honor Society\, and she completed a senior thesis project on the constitutional construction of judicial independence and the impact of the Executive Office on the courts. Sofia has three years of research experience in the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan\, studying moral development in children with a particular focus on how they develop trust in institutions and reciprocity. Her experiences in Venezuela created a passion in her for the First Amendment that led her to pursue an academic career in the United States. She now lives in Philadelphia where she works at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression as a program associate. DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nNovember 16\, 2022\n12:00 - 1:00 EST\n\nSunghee Lee is a Research Associate Professor at Survey Research Center\, University of Michigan. Her research focuses on sampling and measurement issues with hard-to-survey population subgroups as well as racial\, ethnic\, and linguistic minorities.\n\nChendi Zhao is a Research Assistant and first-year Ph.D. student in the Program in Survey and Data Science\n\nAnqi Liu is a master’s student in MPSDS at the University of Michigan. She works closely with Dr. Sunghee Lee on the Health and Retirement Study sampling. \n\nAbstract\nA standard approach for targeting population subgroups in household surveys is to sample general population and then to screen for eligible households. This becomes increasingly costly as the subgroup accounts for a small proportion of the population\, which is the case for the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). HRS is a population-based longitudinal study of adults ages 50 and older in the U.S. and maintains its representativeness by adding a new age cohort every 6 years. In 2016\, HRS targeted those born between 1960 and 1965 with an additional goal of oversampling racial/ethnic minorities. This group is less than 10% of the population. In order to increase the efficiency of screening\, HRS had traditionally used probability proportionate size sampling in its area-probability sample with the age-eligible population size as a measure of size as well as stratification based on the race/ethnicity distribution of area sampling units. For 2016\, HRS sampling additionally used stratification at the address level by enhancing the population of addresses in the sample areas with commercial data. This study examines the utility of commercial data for increasing efficiency with a focus on its availability and accuracy by analyzing a dataset that combines sampling frame data\, screening data\, main survey data as well as external data from the American Community Survey. \n\nMPSDS\nThe University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021\, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data\, but also including social media posts\, sensor data\, and administrative records\, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research\, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.\n\nSISRT\nThe Annual Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques\nThe mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design\, implementation\, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948\, and has offered such courses every summer since.  Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.\n\nThe Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business\, public health\, natural resources\, law\, medicine\, nursing\, social work\, and many other domains of study.

Of particular importance were mass housing and everyday technologies\, the two types of vernacular machines essential for organizing the people and raising their productivity. Apartments and tractors were celebrated as emblems of new socialist life. Concurrently\, apartments and tractors were spectacles that dissimulated the global capitalist ideology of industrial efficiency. Machines are then parts of coordinated systems that organize life and support the expansion of state and industrial domination.\n\nCheehyung Harrison Kim is an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. His research and teaching focus on socialism\, labor\, industrialism\, everyday life\, and urbanism in the context of North Korea and East Asia. He is the author of *Heroes and Toilers: Work as Life in Postwar North Korea*\, 1953-1961\, published by Columbia University Press. SUMMARY:Presentation:The Coming Interjurisdictional Abortion Wars
DESCRIPTION:This talk will examine the paradigm shift that is occurring now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Returning abortion law to the states will spawn perplexing legal conflicts across state borders and between states and the federal government. This talk emphasizes how these issues intersect with innovations in the delivery of abortion\, which can now occur entirely online and transcend state boundaries. Judges and scholars\, and most recently the Supreme Court\, have long claimed that abortion law will become simpler if Roe is overturned. But in reality\, overturning Roe will create a novel world of complex\, interjurisdictional legal conflicts over abortion. Some states will pass laws creating civil or criminal liability for out-of-state abortion travel while others will pass laws insulating their providers from out-of-state prosecutions. The federal government will also intervene\, attempting to use federal laws to preempt state bans and federal land to shelter abortion services. Ultimately\, once the constitutional protection for pre-viability abortion disappears\, the impending battles over abortion access will transport the half-century war over Roe into a new arena\, one that will make abortion jurisprudence more complex than ever before. This talk will offer insights into this fast-approaching transformation of abortion rights\, law\, and access\, looking ahead to creative strategies to promote abortion access in a country without a constitutional abortion right.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar I Black hole microstate counting from the gravitational path integral
DESCRIPTION:Reproducing the integer count of black hole micro-states from the gravitational path integral is an important problem in quantum gravity. In this paper\, we show that\, by using supersymmetric localization\, the gravitational path integral for 1/16-BPS black holes in N=8 supergravity reproduces the index obtained in the string theory construction of such black holes\, including all non-perturbatively suppressed geometries. A more refined argument then shows that\, not only the black hole index but also the total number of black hole microstates within an energy window above extremality that is polynomially suppressed in the charges also matches this string theory index. To achieve such a match\, we compute the one-loop determinant arising in the localization calculation for all N=2 supergravity supermultiplets in the N=8 gravity supermultiplet. Furthermore\, we carefully account for the contribution of boundary zero-modes\, which can be seen as arising from the zero-temperature limit of the N=4 super-Schwarzian\, and show that performing the exact path integral over such modes provides a critical contribution needed for the match to be achieved.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Unraveling Implosion Physics in Inertial Confinement Fusion: Direct-drive Simulations\, Experiments\, and Physics-informed Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDirect-drive Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) implosions can potentially provide high fusion yield and gain. These implosions are performed at the 60-beam\, ~30-kJ OMEGA laser at the U. of Rochester. The nominally identical beams implode a cryogenic layer of deuterium-tritium fuel enclosed in a polymeric shell. In this talk\, I will describe the physics and status of these implosions. Design and interpretation of OMEGA cryogenic implosions are performed using integrated radiation-hydrodynamic codes that include the physics of laser plasma interactions\, heat conduction\, radiation transport\, and material properties. However\, differences in experimental signatures compared with models indicate that these codes have limited quantitative predictability. Predictive modeling requires targeted experiments to improve physics models in integrated codes with an emphasis on diagnostics. Targeted platforms including solid spheres\, planar foils\, and cones embedded in shells are used to validate laser drive models\, shock propagation etc. An alternate approach based on semi-empirical data science has helped identify experimental fusion yield dependencies on parameters that may not be captured a-priori in simulations and has improved implosion performance. I will also discuss the path forward for direct-drive ICF implosions\, including extrapolations for the prediction of gain and required improvements in physics understanding.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nRadha is a Distinguished Scientist at the U. of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics\, LLE. Her research focuses on understanding the physics of plasmas. She models the behavior of high temperature plasmas with the goal of developing predictive simulations for fusion experiments. Her work was the first that helped experimentally identify the role of hydrodynamic instability in ICF implosions. She has been instrumental in identifying nuclear astrophysics related questions and initiating experiments to address them using high-power lasers. Radha has led research at the National Ignition Facility to study various aspects of direct-drive. Previously\, Radha led the Integrated Modeling Group and was Chair of the High-Performance Computing Group at LLE. She has served on several national panels and committees reviewing ICF\, including as an advisor to the Under Secretary of Energy for Science. Radha also leads a group of women at LLE called the Women in Science and Engineering at Rochester or WISER. Radha is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and is the recipient of the Leadership Award for fusion energy from Fusion Power Associates. She has a Ph.D. in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from the California Institute of Technology.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom\; it is free and open to the public. Her love of analytics and data research quickly launched her into success with Bank of America soon after graduation\, where she currently serves as a Wealth Management Analyst. Hannah also had a wealth of pivotal experiences while at LSA including her involvement in Barger Leadership Institute and the Global Scholars Program. Now\, she returns to share her tips and tricks on how she used her student experiences to help pave the pathway for success after graduation. \n\n\nAbout Hannah:\nHannah joined Bank of America in 2021 as a Wealth Management Rotational Analyst within the Retirement & Personal Wealth Solutions organization. Her first rotation was in the Institutional Client Acquisition team where she supported financial advisors in leveraging the Institutional Retirement platform to drive more retail access flow. She's now in her second rotation with the Defined Contribution Product Management team where her primary role is to develop and implement the new robust operating model that supports the client-facing Consulting Relations team in engaging with third party investment consultants to increase brand awareness and win business. Hannah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan with a minor in Business at the Ross School of Business. DESCRIPTION:In Eco Soma\, Petra Kuppers asks readers to be alert to their own embodied responses to art practice and to pay attention to themselves as active participants in a shared sociocultural world. Reading contemporary performance encounters and artful engagements\, this book models a disability culture sensitivity to living in a shared world\, oriented toward more socially just futures.\n\nEco soma methods mix and merge realities on the edges of lived experience and site-specific performance. Kuppers invites us to become moths\, sprout gills\, listen to our heart’s drum\, and take starships into crip time. And fantasy is central to these engagements: feeling/sensing monsters\, catastrophes\, golden lines\, heartbeats\, injured sharks\, dotted salamanders\, kissing mammoths\, and more. Kuppers illuminates ecopoetic disability culture perspectives\, contending that disabled people and their co-conspirators make art to live in a changing world\, in contact with feminist\, queer\, trans\, racialized\, and Indigenous art projects. By offering new ways to think\, frame\, and feel “environments\,” Kuppers focuses on art-based methods of envisioning change and argues that disability can offer imaginative ways toward living well and with agency in change\, unrest\, and challenge.\n\nTraditional somatics teach us how to fine-tune our introspective senses and to open up the world of our own bodies\, while eco soma methods extend that attention toward the creative possibilities of the reach between self\, others\, and the land. DESCRIPTION:This paper uses a new survey to explore subjective earnings risk over the life cycle and shows that it is closely related to subjective risk in job transitions. We introduce the Copenhagen Life Panel to measure respondents’ subjective expectations\, which can be linked to Danish administrative data. The novelty of the survey is that we measure uncertainty in job transitions and earnings conditional on staying with the same employer\, quitting\, and being laid off. We then aggregate these conditional responses to construct a complete distribution of next year’s income for each respondent\, which takes into account all the possible transitions and earnings realizations that can occur. We find that on average within age groups\, our respondents’ subjective income distributions exhibit less variance and are not as negatively skewed as the realized distribution of income growth in the administrative data. We also find a great amount of heterogeneity in these subjective distributions\, mainly driven by the subjective probabilities of job transitions. Lastly\, we compare our measured beliefs with the beliefs that arise from a canonical life-cycle search model. We find that workers appear to have more knowledge about their future job prospects compared to what is implied by the model.

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED FROM NOVEMBER 15TH TO NOVEMBER 16TH.\n\nThe magma type ejected in some of the largest supervolcano eruptions in the U.S. (e.g.\, Yellowstone\, WY and Long Valley\, CA) is the most differentiated and evolved on Earth\, which gives it unique characteristics.   One is that it transitions between 100% liquid and 100% solid within a few tens of degrees of cooling.  In this talk\, insights extracted from the magma ejected during the Long Valley\, CA\, supereruption are used to unravel its origin.  The evidence points to rapid segregation and ascent of voluminous (>400 km3) melt\, which had previously been held in cold storage (i.e.\, largely crystallized) only months\, if not weeks and days\, before the eruption. DESCRIPTION:November 16th\n4:00pm- 6:00pm\nPendleton Room\, Michigan\n\nUnderstanding Demonization\n\nIn the age of individual responsibility\, those at the bottom of the income hierarchy are routinely shamed. Out-of-work benefits claimants are subject to particularly severe forms of vilification\, their unemployment being portrayed as resulting from personal failings. When these shortcomings are constructed as moral failings\, we enter the space of what I call “demonization”. Demonization is the portrayal of individuals as wicked threats to the community and as worthy of deep moral contempt for their alleged behavior. Benefits recipients are demonized when they undergo sustained attacks on their moral character\, when they are viewed as deliberately choosing idleness over hard work. The trope of the lazy free rider living at taxpayers’ expense is remarkably uniform across advanced economies and has been an effective strategy to undermine support for welfare. Because demonization diminishes its target’s moral standing\, it pauses a critical threat to our ability to stand as equals\, which contemporary theorists allege to be an essential component of a just and democratic society. Starting from the example of benefits recipients\, my paper identifies several morally significant steps in the workings of demonization\, clarifies its social function\, and characterizes precisely what makes it wrong

DESCRIPTION:Culinary-focused travel has become a hot trend within the tourism sector in recent years. Tourists increasingly prefer to let their taste buds decide how and where they travel. For cities and countries looking to market themselves\, culinary tourism has become an essential and powerful branding element.\n\nBut can this kind of travel be about much more than food? Yigal Schleifer\, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Culinary Backstreets\, will tackle that question and more during a talk hosted by the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan. The discussion\, “Crossing Borders and Cuisines: A New Flavor of Sustainable Tourism\,” is slated for 5:00–6:00 PM\, Nov. 16 in R1230 of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. The session is free and open to the public. It also will be broadcast via Zoom\; click to register.\n\nSchleifer will explore how Culinary Backstreets\, which provides tours in a dozen cities around the world\, uses food-oriented travel to promote cross-cultural communication and sustainable tourism for more impactful experiences. Created in 2012\, Culinary Backstreets covers the local and traditional food scene and offers immersive small group culinary walks in cities including Istanbul\, Lisbon\, Mexico City\, Tbilisi\, Tokyo\, Barcelona and a half dozen more. The talk will also look at how the COVID crisis has impacted culinary travel and how this sector can be rebuilt with an eye towards sustainability.\n\nBetween 2002 and 2010\, Schleifer was based in Istanbul\, where he worked as a correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor and the German Press Agency (dpa). While in Istanbul he also co-founded Istanbul Eats\, an award-winning blog about the city’s local food scene\, and co-wrote a guidebook of the same name. He also launched “Istanbul Calling\,” a blog about Turkish foreign and domestic affairs. Schleifer’s work has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Foreign Policy\, Ha’aretz\, The Times (London) and several other publications.\n\nSchleifer was an advisory board member for the Livelihoods Innovation through Food Entrepreneurship (LIFE) Project\, which supported and encouraged people to engage across cultures through entrepreneurship and job creation in the food sector. Since 2017\, WDI’s Entrepreneurship Development Center has worked on the U.S. government-funded LIFE Project\, in collaboration with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)\, IDEMA\, Union Kitchen and the Stimson Center.

After college\, she interned on the finance team at Bloomberg News in New York before starting at the Washington\, DC bureau as a national political correspondent. She covered the 2020 presidential election embedded with Senator Bernie Sanders’s campaign for the primary and reported on then-candidate Joe Biden in the general. After writing on the Biden administration’s transition\, she spent several months in Albany\, NY covering the investigations into and ultimate resignation of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Emma currently covers the White House as a reporter for CNBC.\n\n• Craig Barker: Craig has spent over 20 years at his alma mater of Stevenson High School of Livonia\, Michigan as the AP United States History teacher.  Beyond the classroom\, he has served as the school's quiz bowl coach\, digital media coordinator\, and unofficial historian.  In 2019\, Craig was honored as the Jim and Annette McConnell Award Winner as the Michigan High School History Teacher of the Year.\n\n• Krista Albertins: Krista studied History and Political Science and minored in Museum Studies at UM. Her studies focused on public history and Latvian cultural history. DESCRIPTION:Asset pedagogies\, known variously as culturally relevant pedagogy\, culturally responsive pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching\, have become a prominent facet of the curricular content of teacher preparation programs. Recently\, education researcher Django Paris has suggested that responding to culture is not sufficient\, arguing that teacher education must find ways for pre- and in-service teachers to value and maintain their students’ range of cultural practices\, including dominant language\, literacies\, and other cultural ways of knowing and being. In this presentation\, Connie McKoy will: (1) compare and contrast culturally sustaining pedagogy as an outgrowth of earlier research in the area of asset pedagogies and (2) explore the implications of culturally sustaining pedagogy for addressing issues of equity in music education.\n\nConnie McKoy is Marion Stedman Covington Distinguished Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. McKoy’s research focuses on music teachers’ cross-cultural competence\, and culturally responsive teaching in music. Her co-authored book Culturally Responsive Teaching in Music Education: From Understanding to Application\, is in its second edition. She is a Past President of the North Carolina Music Educators Association and Past Chair of the Society for Music Teacher Education.

DESCRIPTION:Each year over Spring term\, NELP sends forty students and thirteen instructors to live and study in the woods of New England. The program is rigorous and exhilarating-we read and write a lot\; we meet for classes every day\; we do chores like cooking and cleaning together every day\; we give up our phones and computers\; we climb mountains. Our students receive (9) English credits and meet LSA's Upper-Level Writing Requirement. Folks from a broad range of majors and schools attend NELP each year. You can find her poems in POETRY\, *Narrative*\, *Best New Poets*\, *Kenyon Review*\, *Pleiades*\, and *TriQuarterly*. She’s an assistant editor of *the Yale Review*.\n\n*Bryan Byrdlong* (Class of 2020) is a Black writer from Chicago\, Illinois. He has been published in *Guernica Magazine*\, *The Kenyon Review*\, and *Poetry Magazine*. Most recently Bryan received a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation. Bryan is currently a PhD student in Creative Writing at USC in Los Angeles.\n\n*Jenny Tomscha* (Class of 2011) is a fiction writer and teacher of writing\, as well as a PhD student in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters (Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand). Most recently\, she directed the Writing Program at New York University Shanghai\, where she was also a founding faculty member. During her tenure at NYU Shanghai\, she developed the university's creative writing minor and helped to establish a robust creative writing community. Her career as a university teacher of writing also includes positions at the University of Michigan and the New England Literature Program (NELP). Jennifer also has a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School.

DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, India’s Dalits were abhorred as “untouchables\,” denied education\, and treated as bonded labor. By 1923 Bhimrao Ambedkar broke the taboo\, won doctorates abroad\, and fought for the emancipation of his people. He drafted India’s Constitution and led his followers to Buddhism. His legend still spreads through poetry and song.\n   \n   In 1997 a statue of Dr. Ambedkar in a Dalit colony in Mumbai was desecrated with footwear. As angry residents gathered\, police opened fire and killed 10 people. Vilas Ghogre\, a leftist poet\, hung himself in protest.\n   \n   *Jai Bhim Comrade* shot over 14 years\, follows the poetry and music of people like Vilas and marks a tradition that\, from the days of the Buddha\, has fought superstition and religious bigotry.\n   \n   “Far reaching\, and by turns pensive and enraging… Jai Bhim Comrade could be seen as a capstone to Patwardhan’s extraordinary career.” - Sukhdev Sandhu\, The Guardian\n\n   “Legendary director Anand Patwardhan’s epic doc about dalit people is a massive\, musical\, magnificent\, masterpiece” - Mark Cousins\, Filmmaker\, Critic\n\n   Anand Patwardhan\, India’s leading documentary filmmaker\, is known for his socio-political\, award-winning films. He has spent decades capturing Mumbai’s slum dwellers\, the reality of the caste system\, the rise of Hindu nationalism\, and tensions between India and Pakistan. DESCRIPTION:A concert featuring Persian Barbat and Oud Virtuoso Hossein Behroozinia\, with his ensemble and multi-instrumentalist Xiao Dong Wei\, Lecturer at the U-M Residential College Music Department.\n\nAn internationally renowned barbat and oud player\, \nHossein Behroozinia graduated from the Tehran Conservatory of Music\, where he also studied tar\, setar\, tonbak\, and daf.  He was the Director of Music Education at the Center of the Preservation Persian Music. In 2003\, the  Ministry of Culture of Iran decorated him with its highest honor\,  \"The First Order of Arts.\"
